Such excellent acting and set in a splendid period when England was arguably still at its last best. Not a Golden Age to be sure but very nearly it - a very comfortable reassuring time when our policemen and the elderly were respected by the majority, we had war heroes with ladies and gentlemen who all knew how to behave properly in public at least.
It was a fantasy. That is why they are entertaining. The world of films and television is not a real one. Yet people like you think base your lives on them and even vote on the basis of misunderstanding this.

Yes!!! The best Miss Marple. The newer ones are overblown and florid and off the beam as far as being anything like the books. Sorry.....I needed to vent!!
Joan Hickson is Miss Marple...there can t be a better one...Julie Mc Kenzie is quite close and Geraldine ? was in no way Miss Marple. Miss Marple knew people like her but would not have befriended them . And then I like how The Joan Hickson Miss Marple sticks to the book, every inch how Agatha Christie imagined her. I hate when they change the plot and you don t even recognize the initial story anymore and sometimes even with a different ending...Why do authors have to "modernize" an already perfect plot....
It sounds absolutely wonderful when they say "let's have a nice cup of tea", but then I remember the English tea that is more milk than tea and it spoils it all. To me a nice cup of tea is with a drop of fresh lemon. The first time I was in London and bought a cup of tea, I thought they had misunderstood when they gave me this cup of milky stuff. Also the first time a mother of a friend asked me if I would like to stay for tea and I happily said yes, and I couldn't understand why she then started cooking. She made bacon, eggs, fries and sausages and one pork chop, which turned out to be for me and everyone in the family was looking enviously at my pork chop. It turned out tea was dinner and as this was not a well to do family, they bought a pork chop only for their guest (such sweet people). So I explained that I was so sorry but I was a vegetarian and the two kids got to share the meat:) It can be very surprising how different meaning a word has in another country.
@@sarahbrightmore3749 No I'm Danish and I love my tea with a slice of lemon and I have been a tea drinker since childhood and never drink coffee (I lived in the US for 3 years as a child). When I was on vacation in the US last year my cousin had stacked up on lemons for my tea:) I love England though and have been there many times. Stay safe!!

MissWitchiepoo ...I remember being told, as a student in England, that tea with lemon was called Russian tea. It’s served in a tall glass mug rather than a tea cup
@@christinelachance8012 I have never heard it called Russian Tea, it's funny the differences in peoples taste buds. In my country we have a word called HYGGE and that word has been added to the English dictionary, because it's one of the things people love about my country and want to have too. The closest I can get to a translate is being cosy. When my daughter was growing up I would say that now we are going to hygge and we would take all our feather filled pillows and comforter and put it in the sofa and make a pot of tea and have goodies and wear our pj's, that is hygge, but it can be anything that makes you just feel really good and I can tell you that whenever I am going to hygge it always means a cup of tea, so whenever I watch these tv shows and I hear them ask if anyone would like a cup of tea, it just makes me feel like I must have tea too:)

Geraldine McEwan did well, but was always let down by most of the supporting cast, sentimentalised sets and by some chocolate box camera shots. The Joan Hickson versions are always going to be difficult to beat. Not only was she outstanding, but settings and filming were sublime. I will purchase only this entire set, having watch every one, several times before. There is still something in them that seems always fresh and refreshing. Vince
They left out a whole segment of this story. What happened to Beatrice? She wanted to speak with Partridge. Then she was found dead in the coal cellar in the basement. What had happened? Well she had seen Symington return home to deliver that poison pen letter to his wife, and then pretend that he was at work all day. But Beatrice saw him from the Symington house window upstairs. This bothered her and she wanted to speak to Partridge about it. The death of Beatrice is missing from the story. That whole segment was cut out. Unbelievable!
Miss Marple explained at the end that Beatrice saw NOTHING. No postman came by, nobody else stoped by the house. So, slowly she started wondering How the anonymous letter got to the house. So Mr. Simmington didn’t want her talking about it and raising questions. I hope it helps.
Joan Hickson is the perfect Miss Marple. Geraldine McEwan was miscast in the role, and was not the right type to play Miss Marple. Also, the Joan Hickson episodes stayed close to the original stories. The Geraldine McEwan episodes took Agatha Christie's stories and rewrote them into unrecognizable and ridiculous junk.
