- While out playing golf with his friend Dr. Thomas, Bobby Jones finds a man who has apparently fallen over the side of a cliff onto the seaside rocks below. His dying words are "Why didn't they ask Evans?". The dead man is identified by his sister Mrs. Cayman as Alex Pritchard, who had recently returned to the UK from abroad and was on a walking tour. Bobby and his friend Lady Frances Derwent soon conclude that illicit drugs are at the core of the mystery and suspicion falls on a certain Dr. Nicholson who runs a country clinic for drug addicts. The mystery revolves around a will and numerous false or stolen identities. But just who is Evans and what should he/she have been asked?
This is excellent. Great filming, acting, story, everything! So glad its on here. Looking forward to the next 2 parts!
Agatha Christie for ever! 'The best of writers,, the best actors , the best directors, who can ask for more if one loves the great British classics! Many thanks, from Mussoorie , India .
Yep. I'm with you. Ditto for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and PG Wodehouse ...
Yes, of course, PG Wodehouse, Arthur Conan Doyle......... Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy............... How could i leave them out?!!!
yes, it really was lovely to watch the casting was spot on loved them one and all.
@Вий Кащеев Learn proper English before posting your stupid comments and someone may take you serious.
Brilliant. Love Agatha Christie. Really appreciate the time taken to post the series 😊😊
Wow she must have been writing 23 hours a day, Poirot, Miss Marple, and MORE! So well done too, very clever. Much better than anything written today.
Thanks for posting this -- I'm very glad to see it. ................. I find it infuriating that most of the Christie adaptations made since c. 2005, which have the advantage of great production values, refuse to be faithful to her books (which are well-plotted and full of drama, if one knows how to write a screenplay) and instead rip out characters and insert new ones, or insert new sub-plots (concerning pregnancy or sexuality) that were *not* in her work. (I have zero objection to those themes, just an objection to them being shoehorned into Christie's work.) ..................... Her work always had a certain flavor, and to dilute or alter that is to lose something essential, something true to who she was and the era in which she wrote.
I agree! Sometimes with the new ones you can barely relate what you're seeing to the book you've read. This one is a good example- the other production I watched, a more modern adaptation, was ridiculously off plot!
One recent adaptation that stayed true(ish) to her work was "And Then There Were None" (2015); I recommend it. On the whole, tho, I can't understand why producers refused to stay faithful to her books, which had (I think) enough drama to carry a 90-min. adaptation. To have seen her work (as written) brought to TV with the great production values, great casting, and great editing of the recent adaptations -- that would have been something. Sorry to repeat myself; thanks for commiserating.
I find that with quite a few of the things I watch the more modern adaptations are further away from the original book. I don't know if you're an Austen fan :) but with most of the movies, like Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility- the ones produced in the 80's and 90's are always truer and the later ones are worse- more concentration on casting notable stars but less attention to the nuances of Austen's writing or even the plot at all! Have you noticed that with other films as well? And I wonder why?
That's a very interesting insight, and I'm sure you're right (the push to Make Everything Mega-Profitable really messes up lots of TV and film). I tend to avoid adaptations of Jane Austen's work because I like the novels and I want to see them in my mind when I re-read them (and not see remembered scenes from an adaptation); the only Austen adaptation I've seen is the 1995 "Persuasion" (had to see it because I like Ciaran Hinds), and I thought it was very true to the mood of the book and also was un-fussy and not self-conscious, as adaptations can be. (I would never see the 2008 version -- prettyboy R. Penry-Jones as Capt. Wentworth is ridiculous, and that supports your assertion about later adaptations/stars/crud.)
..... I've avoided Bronte adaptations for the same reasons, but because I'm too lazy to read most of Dickens, I watch post-2000 adaptations and have really liked some of them.
..... Btw, if you've not seen the 1998 version of "Vanity Fair" and "The Way We Live Now," I urge you to watch them.
Thank God someone feels the way I do about the abominations we have had to watch which purport to be the work of Christie. There was one production of quite a few of her novels that even changed the murderer in her plots and I find that sacrilege. Moreover, this series was OK'd by her heirs who seem only to be out to make as much money from her genius as they can. Talking about turning in her grave!
I loved this show, and Seven Dials, as a kid. I wanted to change my last name to Bassington-Ffrench.
...to Bassington-Fffrench? you were in luck you didn't old chap.
Anyway, that would have to have been "Bassington-ffrench." A capital "F" would have been so gauche, don't you know.
hahahaha
Also from The Netherlands. Love it.
Innocent days.
"It's most exciting to have a romantically poisoned friend." I haven't seen this show in years but it's as wonderful as I remember it!
One of Agatha Christie's best stories. Add in John Gielgud, who could ask for anything more.
This was one of my favorite Christie books. I've never seen any film adaptation so looking forward to this, lots of good reviews.
The vicar's expressions in church when Bobby arrives late, hysterical I had to rewind. Thank you for uploading.
Ria!! As I'm watching the the movie !!! Lol I thought about you saying ! About the look on the vicar!!!! face Lol...lol after he came in the church . I laughed and I laughed I think I'll just watch the movie and not pay that much attention LOL I rewind !!! It too yes I laugh some more .and just continue to watch the movie. You're funny !!! Happy Easter !God bless you !
I love it too.... made me laugh!
John Gielgud, one of the greatest Shakespeareans ever.
Already SO much better than the newest 2000something version. This feels like the clear, uncluttered Christie storylines, and charismatic characters we've come to love. Thank you dearly for posting these wonderful videos!! Not only are they enjoyable as art, and human storytelling...they're an important living archive of our history and heritage that I worry is being lost.
Thanks again for maintaining a record of art when it was given more, and the right kind of support, and was better for it!
The dialogues are taken from the book almost line by line.
What were the 233 thumbs down? We know that there are at least 233 people who need to not be allowed to reproduce.
Another brilliant work with "Annis & Warwick" and non-studio sets ...
My wife and I will never forget seeing Francesca Annis as "Lily" Langtry on PBS when it first aired in America in the 70's. Unforgettable actress....
Based upon the cars used in this episode - I'm guessing 1935. So if you take a job offer of £1,000 UK Sterling - that would equate to about £50,000 in today's UK Sterling (or about $77,000 in US Dollars). Not bad for a Vicar's son.
Actually more than that. In 2015, it was about £64,000 according to the Bank of England's inflation calculator. In 2021, £75,672.96. I actually would have expected the offer to be higher if they wanted to make an offer he couldn't refuse. He has a posh education; that ought to be worth something even during the Depression. By the way, a vicar wasn't necessarily a nobody. Considering their posh accents and Bobby's posh social circle, the vicar was probably the younger son of an aristocrat.
Thanks for uploading. Gorgeous clothes.
Pure class. Francesca Annis an English rose if ever there was one, the timing and delivery of James Warwick (Tommy and Tuppence in the making) and of course the magnificent John Gielgud. His repeated admonition "Really Bobby!" has somehow stuck with me all these years.
Francesca Anis's clothes are to die for, even in this day and age of 2018!
Absolutely; the acme of sartorial elegance.
What a gloriously funny movie in places! Thankyou for making it possible to see the movie and have a good laugh.
Terrific first episode! I love beautiful Francesca Annis 💕 with James Warwick and Sir John Gielgud. I’m looking forward to watching the next episodes. Francesca Annis and James Warwick were also great together in Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime series a few years later.
I love this series, I watch it as often as my children will allow! However, I have a question: does anyone know where the initial seaside scenes were filmed ?
My all time favourite, must have watched it over a 100 times since the 80's.
Although camp acting in 1980, the storyline seems more mysterious than even of Poirot!
Tommy & Tuppence together again! Lovely.
Was I the only one who expected the golf ball to hit the hiker?
No, I fully expected it to whack him, and for Bobby to feel he caused it.
@@jgregveneklasen2657
Too much Money Python, I guess.
John Gieguld!
I hope I remember those words when I'm dying! ;) One of my elderly patients last words were; what ever happened to the last of the Mohicans!
He went on to win another 2 Oscars.
Absolutely delightful! Sir John Gielgud! The best of the best! Francesca Annis and James Warwick who later played Agatha Christie's Tommy and Tuppence. Joan Hickson who became THE Miss Marple and Connie Booth, the infamous Polly of Fawlty Towers. A magnificent cast and I thought a truly delightful portrayal of one of my personal favorites. Nobody can do Agatha Christie like the British! .. hands down, by far, the best!
the moonspinner Gielgud may have a lovely voice & may be quite riveting on the stage or perhaps other productions, but his timing as a TV actor in this is rather awkward & uncomfortable, slightly annoying, not his finest, I should imagine."Frankie" is quite good, though, whatever the actress' name is...
I don't rate actors just because they're famous & people have told me they're fab, no matter how many; I would rather form my opinion independently & the truth is that he doesn't light up the screen for me. He is average in this, at best, underperforming, at worst.
DrJay DrJay He was playing a vicar, not a roman candle you pompous twerp.
+Mike Williams .. thank you. : )
Basically she BELONGS to the British -even as she held the entire world in her gripping tales.
the moonspinner I
I think I can be forgiven for thinking that it was James Warwick who played the assistant DI on the 'Wexford' mysteries by Ruth Rendell.
The resemblance to Chris Ravenscroft is uncanny.
THE LADY PLAYING MRS ROBERTS IS THE GREAT LYNDA LA PLANTE WRITER OF WIDOWS AND PRIME SUSPECT
Thanks, I’ll have to watch out for her.
I love this tv show,so so British.
James Warwick (Bobby Jones) always reminds me of Michael Palin! He was 33 in playing a younger man! This reminds me of Tommy & Tuppunce series of books!
Fascinating to see this because I didn't realize that James Warwick and Francesca Annis had appeared together before they did the Tommy and Tuppence series starting in 1983. Not so surprising given that that series and this movie were all the work of John A. Davis and Tony Wharmby.
George Plumley I
LWT had it made with all the Christie stuff, including Poirot.
I had a nagging feeling that I had seen this actor before. And to think, he went on to star again with Francesca Annis! She looks a little different with dark hair, though.
Thank you for posting (from a cousin across the pond!) Wish there were more Agatha Christie movies available.
Thank you so much, i was just thinking i wanna see THIS. Thank you and all the best to you. Ive been looking for this forever.
its Polly from Fawlty Towers! lol...thought i knew the voice
Love James Warfield and Francesa Annis in Agatha Christie! Wish I could see their Tommy and Tuppence movies.
Thanks so much for post.... thoroughly enjoyed... Agatha at her best👌🏽🙏🏻❤️
Wonderfully directed, played and filmed.
Thank you! So much better and loyal to Agatha Christie's novel than the 2009 version with Julia McKenzie. Because there is NOT Miss Marple in this story. Well done!
Have just had to turn off the Julia McKenzie version of this story which I was viewing. It was so stupid and not at all as I remember the book. Why do they have to mess about with a good story. This version is brilliant and I do recall seeing it back in the 80's. Love it.
I love this film and it's novel so much : )
Merp
Watched it after all ... excellent for 30 minutes but then lost the plot entirely. Mind you, those drawings at the end are lovely. The best film I've lately seen on UA-cam is Hotel du Lac. Rivetingly gorgeous.
Hahaha. Love this but I had forgotten how hopelessly thick Bobby is.
Indeed. Bernie Wooster does Agatha Christie.
Favourite series is this one. later ones used Miss Marple and I think Joan Hickson was in part 2 of this series unless I got my actors mixed up?
Gillian R-W Yes Joan Hickson has a small role in part 2.
I just love this pair, especially Francesca A who is still gorgeous at a similar age to me today.
Such nasty rude idiots on here
Excellent ! One of the best from great Agatha. Francesca Annis is quite good in lady Frances.
thanks for posting enjoying it very much
I just finished the book, I love frankie and bobby
The future Tommy and Tupence and their lovely dynamic. Francesca Annis is so wonderful in all her period drama roles. Everything today is filled with unnecessary & blatant inappropriatness. They dont make them like this anymore.
I remember watching this version of Why Didn't They Ask Evans? back in 1980. Terrific throughout and greatly superior to another version of this novel done several years ago.
+MrBabies123 So do I! It was on channel 5 here in NYC. This and The Seven Dials Mystery.
I wanted to watch it but it was bedtime, I remember seeing the man with the bleeding mouth vividly though, just before I went... great to see it at last :-D
I was only 9 ha ha
The first Agatha Christie's book i have read , then just now i know there ia a film👍👍👍
The brits are so good at acting
I think it's because they're not afraid to look foolish or unattractive for a moment in benefit of the story.
The country of Shakespeare
Brilliant John Gielgud .
So the original story was not a Miss Marple mystery like the 2000's T V version
The Bassington French house was also used in some of the Jeeves and Wooster episodes! A lovely house.
i was wondering why it looked familiar, thanks.
Tommy and Tuppence! The dynamic duo. There is special chemistry between them which is hard to beat. 👍
Por favor podria ser esta pelicula en español latino me gustan los cuentos de a cristies
Is this a movie? And do I imagine it or is Bobby's father the great Sir John?
Try reading the credits
Does the character of Bobby remind anyone else of Bertie Wooster, just a bit? ;)
To me, it does. Oh Jeeves .. ! Amazing that such darling lads as the character of Bertie Wooster did exist once ... even here in India.
Thanks PD Wodehouse for capturing and recording that part of the life.
God Lord yes! Unfortunately without Jeeves. He and Lady Frankie are a little ridiculous
you have an impressive collection here. thank you for sharing.
This is so good and 100% true to book😍 and dialogs are also same as book. Thank you for uploading
I've just watched the first part of why didn't they ask Evans. I wasn't too happy with the beginning but now I want to know how I can see the rest 😌 of the programme.
@Liam Neeson I'm doing fine thank you. And yourself?
My problem with the most beautiful Francesca Annis is that her accent sounds so very drama school, & not even slightly authentic. The result is something that sounds pretentious, but absolutely not like a woman with a title. Still, she’s a star in whatever she’s in, just wonderful, even if it is as unsuccessful as the “Dune”movie - but she was one of the saving graces of that endeavor. This tv show is very well done and is entertaining.
Where is Ms. Marple? Like the newer version much better.
James Warwick reminds me of Hugh Fraser who played Hastings in Poirot. Maybe just the classic British "second" man. :) Likeable, but not the sharpest one.
Francesca Annis's golfing costume is very similar to one worn by Wallis Simpson n a black and white photo I've seen . I wonder if it's a copy?
I am glad to see everyone have enjoyed it because I didn't make head or tail of it. Specially the accents were too difficult for me to understand.
@Ed. Closed captioning helps, and you can find it at the top right hand corner.
It s english.!!!!!!!! What accent ?
Whilst I am exceedingly fond of some of the actors here & am sympathetic to the view expressed just below (above?) about this version not pinching or placing characters into the story to the apparent fall from grace from the Agatha Christie point of view, I find this version, however faithful, full of absolutely dead moments, rhythmically static, almost devoid of interest. Poorly scripted. And that could never answer to the call of being “faithful” to Ms. Christie’s novel. I know this may incense many of my fellow viewers, but it simply can’t be helped. Honesty is still the best policy. Who gives a damn, in this version, WHY they didn’t call Evans, whoever he is? No offence meant to anyone. This is, after all, only my opinion. But as I am free to express it, I hope its divergence from the “norm” may be forgiven me.
Had they asked Evans to be a witness to the will, he would have blown the whistle on the fraud
Evans was the parlor maid, who would have known that the man making the will wasn't who he claimed to be.
Does anyone know where we’re the locations for the initial outdoor scenes (the coastal golf course) ? John F
Loved this then. Can't wait to watch it now! Thanks for uploading.
Another British film good cast
Isn't she just lovely!
Spotted author Lynda La Plante playing Mrs Roberts the housekeeper (under her actress name Lynda Marchal).
I was a little surprised, as the writer of Prime Suspect I expected someone younger.
Just how gorgeous was Francesca Annis
+thomscn You can see more of Frencesca Annis on YT in " Absolute Hell " - in which you also get Judy Dench. It is a gem of a play.
somyod2u Thanks
+thomscn Difference of opinion, but I would not even call her mildly attractive. It must be the "tea" 3 times a day, or the water over there, but I have not seen a "hot" or "gorgeous" British woman ever. Again, not to be disruptive. just to offer a difference of opinion. I am a rabid film and movie watcher, a devotee of British movies and TV shows, and aside from Kelly Brook, or maybe Kate Beckinsale, I can not remember looking twice at any British woman.
Patrick O'Neill I agree to your 'difference of opinion' quote, and then you let yourself down with your barbed comment on drinking tea three times a day, you crazy coffee drinking insane yank. For the record, who is this Kelly Brooke and Kate Beckinsale you allude too, and it's films not movies. I say this this as a film buff who watches a great deal of 'films' who cannot fathom watching a decent film featuring a mildly good looking American bird, arhh well, never mind..
+Patrick O'Neill Of course you are right, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn , Rosamund Pike, Jacqueline Bisset, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Gemma Arterton .Kate Winslet. Jane Seymour ,Julie Christie , Helen Mirren just to mention a few are indeed very ugly women with no beauty whatsoever.
The acting is very good!
I just think the main 2 characters must be about 25, not 40 years old)))
oh jeese, Frankenstein gets an afro.....oh no, he's dead....well, that's what he gets for such a bad hairdo
I'm a tad sensitive about insensitive comments. Ask my crazy Yorkie. Lol.
Francesca ♡♡♡so beautifulb
Having read all of those I will not watch the film ... and look elsewhere.
No criticism of UA-cam which is magnificently educational.
the best
Aha, Francesca - what a beauty.
Leigh Lawson is a Screen God!!!!
Thank you so much for uploading this 😊
Ah! W the arrival of beloved actor Eric Porter, things do liven up abit! 🤓
How does this film end? It ran out, just as the Vicar’s son (aka: chauffeur to the Lady), was coming to town to rescue her...
talk about leaving it a cliff-hangar...& no link to the rest of the story?!
Winter Star Hello. This is Episode One of three episodes total. In case you haven't yet, do see the other two in order. Each builds on the previous one in nuance, character development, suspense, danger, and at very end, the wonderful answer to why they didn't ask Evans in the first place. Thoroughly consistent when viewed in order and most satisfying.
This puts me to sleep every time. Insomniacs everywhere thank the sweet merciful lord for Francesca Annis.
Christie audiobooks read by Hugh Fraser (the actor who played Hastings with Suchet's Poirot) also help me sleep.
My favorites for insomnia are the man's voice in the Kindle e-reader and the Ed Wood sci-fi movie "Plan 9 from Outer Space."

AAh its like Charles Ryder and his Pater again..
Thanks for posting,
Lady Francis is the one solving everything whilst Bobby is just gawping around asking why
Not always and at least he is sweet and appreciative when she gets it right.mmnn.
“Badger” reminds me of the Jeeves and Wooster characters
The Real Deal
Love these Detective Stories of TUPPENCE etc..
Not the brightest bulbs in the box, but I guess that's part of the charm lol
Joan Hickson has been with Agatha long before Marple.
Loved loved every moment !
Keep up the good work
One Christie novel/movie where you almost not miss the inimitable Hercules Poirot!
I always wondered what the 3 Fish symbol at the Beginning means
If memory serves, Christie used to doodle the fish intertwined. I've always thought that was the reason for that logo
Francesca Annis. Such a lovely looking woman.
Enjoyed the movie. Thanks.
I haven't watched the movie yet. I'm saving it up for an after-dinner treat :-)) But I'll wager that it's going to be great. I love all things British - from Newton to Christie!
