When I was a kid I invited my friend over for a sleepover and we stayed up late and I introduced him to SCTV that night for the first time. This bit came on and we laughed until we were crying. He became a SCTV devotee like me. He passed away a few years ago and I sometimes watch this clip as a way to remember those good times.
I only recently discovered SCTV, but your story is nearly identical for me with Mystery Science Theater 3000. Visited my friends over summer break up in Washington, and they had several episodes of Mystery Science Theater taped from when they lived in Minnesota. Was a magical weekend binge of MST3K, USA Up All Night, and Elvira. One of the greatest weekends of my youth.
I haven't seen this since "SCTV" aired on NBC back in '81. I could only remember Divine "flying" with 6 stagehands pulling on the lines. I had completely forgotten about Martin Short's excellent turn as David Steinberg. SCTV was a total piss!
this is absolutely hysterical!!!! John's Divine is just absolutely hilarious to watch. I was rolling on the ground holding my stomach!!! Thank you John!!!!
*SCTV built and maintained a universe that was in fact more real than the world it portrayed.* Every time the SCTV theme started up I felt "That is THE place to be, I'd like to move there, it's my kind of world." NOTHING then and now could touch it. It's still amazing.
I really need to know if Divine actually got to see this and if so what did she think of it. John Candy was so spot on that you could almost be convinced he was actually Divine.
Remember this as a kid, "No reserved seating necessary" LMAO!! Every parent hates to sit thru their kids plays! Lol Although I think I would have enjoyed this one!! 😂😂
OH MY GOD!!!! That $#!T was so funny! I laughed really hard. The part where Pan comes over the side of the ship and his weight makes the ship keel to one side, and Hook fall overboard (did you see the splash of water?). That was great. I got a big bellylaugh out of that one.
You can just feel the layers of reality peel away. Candy as Divine in the Melonville production of a play based on a Victorian book, re-written by some crazy Canadians, then filmed and broadcast to me sitting stoned on a couch somewhere 40 years ago. And revived 6 years ago on this new-fangled interweb so I can watch today and write my commentary. It's all an illusion, I tell you!
Not to mention that the book was written by a guy who was into boys, and. Contained a line about "A group of fairies walking arm and arm, wobbling unsteadily, on their way back from an orgy." Now That was something that Divine and john waters could have gotten behind.
John Candy as Divine as Peter Pan is the counterculture mind explosion I never knew I wanted. If only he extolled the virtue of filth to the Darlings...
What I would give to see this as a play! One of the worst movie experiences I ever had was when my then-girlfriend made me take her to see Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman in Steven Spielberg's terrible, "Hook". This hilarious SCTV sketch was made many years before "Hook", but it is amazing that it has the same cheap looking, set-bound look that the multi-million dollar Spielberg dud had.
sctv beat SNL on a lot of things.. this is friggin hilarious. it looks like they had a lot of money to work with but they really didn't.. they just had allll kinds of brilliant people and a will to get er done.
@@yaywhewclips242 LOL!! Me too. I think that the reason was they avoided politics and just went for funny satire. I loved Edith too, and her cousin Edna Boyle of Tex and Edna's Prairie Warehouse and Curio Emporium.
Laura Jenkins. Same with me Laura. Dam I miss SCTV and I really miss John Candy and Divine. I have never heard a bad word about John Candy I read whenever he was making a movie he would bring cases of beer and food for everyone working on the movie. R.I.P. JOHN CANDY 🌷🌷🌷
I first saw this sketch when it originally aired-and was completely fooled by Martin Short's David Steinberg impression. I kept wondering why there was no mention of David Steinberg being on "SCTV." I didn't realize it was Martin Short until the sketch was practically over.
John Candy did a pitch perfect impression of Divine and Martin Short did a great job playing Captain Hook. I wonder who played Wendy, John and Michael in the sketch
John as Eldona in 'Nothing but Trouble' and as the crossdressing adult store shopper in 'Armed & Dangerous' was already plenty. But this? As Divine? I can die now.
at 0:57, it sounded like one of the kids was about to crack up laughing! (and understandably, cuz...) I'M FLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yessss! He does, its there. Hilarious...the kids must have been having as much fun as the adults. This was a truly awesome segment. They could have done a ton of riffs off this....with Divine as main character in so many movie classics.
The real target of the joke was Shelly Winters, a large woman who did play Peter Pan on Broadway. There was also a gentle poke at Divine, the three hundred pound drag queen who acted in John Water's shock comedy movies in the 1970s. And while John Water's and Andy Warhol never worked together, Water's did cite Warhol as an inspiration. And, I am pretty sure it's been cut because I remember Captain Hook's speech after "Booga Booga" being longer. By the way, if Divine really did play PETER PAN, WHO WAS A BOY, HE WOULD HAVE no reason to do so in drag. He occasionally did play male roles, and, of course, did not do so in female clothing;

All the cool kids growing up watched watched SNL and SCTV but the really cool
Kids knew which one was superior.
SCTV was the best.
That part where Peter is telling off Hook left me in stitches. Candy absolutely nailed Divine's cadence.
'Im flyin' as he knocks over the furniture.
Martin Short does a brilliant impersonation of David Steinberg. RIP, John Candy.
What makes it even funnier is that Martin Short appeared on David Steinberg's variety show in the mid-'70s.
Martin short and John Candy are legends of comedy.
"Booga-booga!"
@@theBaron0530 I scrolled to your comment exactly at the same time that Martin exclaimed it. 😂
Oh my God, why is John Candy such an Amazing,Divine!
because he just IS, that's why!!!!
I thought it was really divine
@@gregorylico2621 Same 😂
John Candy and Divine lived a combined 85 years (Candy 43, Divine 42). RIP to both.
Hilarious as all get out!! John Candy nailed it as Divine!!!
John Candy as Divine as Peter Pan was hysterical! I remember this when it first aired. Can you imagine this as an actual Broadway show?!
John Candy was the freakin' BEST! RIP John.
This is far better and more authentic that that NBC snoozefest. (and funnier)
This was NBC's laughfest. ;-)
The actual Peter Pan play they did or Saturday Night Live?
I haven't seen this since "SCTV" aired on NBC back in '81. I could only remember Divine "flying" with 6 stagehands pulling on the lines. I had completely forgotten about Martin Short's excellent turn as David Steinberg. SCTV was a total piss!
The end is priceless, seeing the hapless stage hands trying to make sure "Peter Pan" can stay up there.
That was the best part.
this is absolutely hysterical!!!! John's Divine is just absolutely hilarious to watch. I was rolling on the ground holding my stomach!!! Thank you John!!!!
The ship leaning as Divine struggles to climb over had me in stitches, the writers for this show were outstanding and completely crazy.
John Candy in drag is all you need to see😂😂😂
John earned his place in comic history.
it was his favorite.
*SCTV built and maintained a universe that was in fact more real than the world it portrayed.*
Every time the SCTV theme started up I felt "That is THE place to be, I'd like to move there, it's my kind of world."
NOTHING then and now could touch it. It's still amazing.
The part where John Candy tips the boat made me die LMFAO😭😭
John Candy in tights flying! He’s my hero!
John Candy as Divine is nothing if not sublime. Now I know where the town of Melonville got its name.
I really need to know if Divine actually got to see this and if so what did she think of it. John Candy was so spot on that you could almost be convinced he was actually Divine.
I so miss, John Candy and SCTV!
Not many people can impersonate Divine well, but John Candy was one of the few who could!
He was a female impersonator impersonator.
Legit thought it was her for a momentA
This ticks a specific humor box I never knew I had.
ain't it grand?
I have never loved Peter Pan more after watching this
I have searched for this video ever seeing it in the 80s on SCTV, never forgot John Candy singing "I won't grow up!" So happy to see it again!
John Candy was The Best!
The best is seeing the 5 or 6 stagehands pulling on the rope to fly Devine.
This clip will live in my head forever rent free

this is easily one of the best things ive ever seen
John Candy as Divine as Peter Pan is the counterculture mind explosion I never knew I wanted. If only he extolled the virtue of filth to the Darlings...
If only they showed him at Divine's birthday party
R.I.P to the legendary John Candy. He was seriously funny.
John candy as divine now I have seen everything...
It takes a special kind of very warped mind to come up with this stuff. Absolutely amazingly awesome!!
and to find it insanely hysterical.
I should have known John Candy did drag on SCTV! His impersonation of Divine is uncanny!
Sadly, this is no longer a joke in Canada... It's reality!
This is legendary.
IT'S A TIMELESS CLASSIC!
Genius.

I wish I grew up in Melonville.
Lmao! Just found this. SCTV was always the best! Kids in the Hall also! SNL sux!
sctv beat SNL on a lot of things.. this is friggin hilarious. it looks like they had a lot of money to work with but they really didn't.. they just had allll kinds of brilliant people and a will to get er done.
Franz Brod our family preferred SCTV way over SNL. I especially 😍 Edith Prickley
Ya I was raised in Canada, and even though it was before my time SNL had nothing on SCTV. It was in reruns ALL THE TIME lol.
@@yaywhewclips242 LOL!! Me too. I think that the reason was they avoided politics and just went for funny satire. I loved Edith too, and her cousin Edna Boyle of Tex and Edna's Prairie Warehouse and Curio Emporium.
No one speaks of David Steinberg any more and that truly saddens me.
Thanks, Sandra!
SCTV was the best: it was so quirky and clever! It never fails to make me laugh, even after all these years.
Compared to the 150 million disappointment "Pan", I prefer this version better.
What makes this even funnier is that Martin Short appeared on David Steinberg's variety show in the mid-'70s.
That's why he got the impression right.
I love it! Resemblance was uncanny. LOL!
I hit the LIKE button! 😁👍🏻
RIP John. We will always love you! ❤️
😳 🧚♂️
🤣
HYSTERICAL!! Nothing in 2023 this funny!
That is a DAMN good impression of Divine!
Steinberg as Hook is eerily close to Dustin Hoffman as Hook
You can't fool me. "Divine's" singing voice was clearly provided by Wolfman Jack. :P
The makeup people were geniuses. Somehow, they made Martin Short look almost exactly like David Steinberg.
Andy Warhol and John Waters in conjunction with Saliva Productions
I really wanna see Divine as stageplay Peter Pan now. Damn you, John Candy! You're so delightful.
Coming to a public library near you.
my thoughts exactly....
wonder what Candy would have thought of that insanity?
Anything SCTV did and even if posted in 144 resolution beats SNL (in HD)
OMG...I remember watching this with m friends...funnier now than ever..never gets old.
pure joy
I'M FLYING! LMAO!
Lol this looks a lot better than the film Disney just released 😂
I’ve been searching for this!!!! The year was 1983. I was on acid and I thought this wasn’t real. I just wasn’t sure. True story.
Nice landing !! Has the grace of a 747. ✈ .
Brilliance upon brilliance
Who wouldn't want to see a John Waters version of Peter pan with Divine?
Oh,Holy Hell Yes! If only I were a millionaire I would bankroll it
I thought that was the Honey Boo Boo mom lol
This is genius. Even the detail, the war memorial auditorium.
you're telling me that's NOT david Steinburg???
i thought Martin Short was steinberg for a quick second. LOL
Divine as Peter Pan, brilliant lol
Is there anything SCTV can't do??? They can do it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Johns Devine singing voice makes me laugh every time. His rediculously low gruff voice. 😂
I first saw this sketch when it originally aired-and was completely fooled by Martin Short's David Steinberg impression. I kept wondering why there was no mention of David Steinberg being on "SCTV." I didn't realize it was Martin Short until the sketch was practically over.
I like SCTV better then in living color
John Candy did a pitch perfect impression of Divine and Martin Short did a great job playing Captain Hook. I wonder who played Wendy, John and Michael in the sketch
This is edited. In the original, Steinberg goes on and on - I recall a bit about how Moses would react to "Booga Booga".
Yeah, they trimmed this one down, all right. What the hell?
watchin for the gazillionth time.
that singing. flol.
This almost made me cry.
From laughing I hope!
I'm f---ing DYING! John Candy SLAYING it!
I've never seen this episode from SCTV! OMG!!
Rip Candy, Rip Divine.
John as Eldona in 'Nothing but Trouble' and as the crossdressing adult store shopper in 'Armed & Dangerous' was already plenty. But this? As Divine? I can die now.
Divine presentation.
David Steinberg LOL
I think I can finally see that Mad TV definitely got more of its influence from SCTV (and In Living Color) rather than SNL
Devine would be great for story time at your local library for the kids hahahaha
Lol I remember this....😂 best times...
at 0:57, it sounded like one of the kids was about to crack up laughing! (and understandably, cuz...)
I'M FLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They could have done a ton of riffs off this....with Divine as main character in so many movie classics.
no one but no one like john candy! rip.
They cut the part where Divine hits David Steinberg in the neck with a whip.
Brilliant!

Is the new Disney live-action version coming out soon on Disney+?
2017? This should go viral
I can't stop laughing when John Candy portrayed the role as a drag queen playing as Peter pan was definitely hilarious in this video.
