When I was a kid and watched this show, I didn't realize how difficult was Monica's sadness... I thought it was just a little grief, and she would be ok in a few days... Today I know life (and love) a little better...
The show affects different people different ways depending on their age. Twenty-somethings were the perfect age to watch this show when it was new, because the 20-somethings would go on to experience the same things as the characters at around the same time over the show's ten year run - weddings, child birth, divorce, job loss, job seeking, etc.
naelisdu77 when I watched this a year ago I didn't really get the grief w breakup... but having to go through a breakup this year made me so much more understanding of Monica's situation and feelings
Having a cigar while kicking back to watch some television while you have your daughter sleeping next to you because you made her feel safe must be the best feeling in the world
I never understood the depression from a break up until I was the one having the depression. Everything reminds me of her. I thought I was going to die. Fortunately my mom help me get through it. Well, it's actually my dad told my mom what to do...
Jack, coming all the way to Monica just to see her after her breakup, comforting her by letting her know that her ex is suffering just like her after the breakup (which hints that Richard really loved her and valued her. Well that's something that can comfort a girl a lot more than anything) and finally sweetly kissing her forehead as he saw her fall asleep in peace is the best thing a father can do. Getting parents who stay caring even when we grow up and just comfort us no matter how bad and mature situation it is, I swear, is a lucky thing. Not everyone gets it.
I'm glad that Monica's dad actually cared for her, unlike her mother. Worst parent on the show besides of course phoebe's mother and father. They never even solved the problem she always hated on Monica for no reason. Probably the reason why Monica has a lot of anxiety and such a perfectionist. She always wanted to make her parents proud (mainly her mother) but no matter how amazing or good she was she was never good enough. She turned to food for love but after that didn't work she became high strung. I love Monica because she reminds me of myself a lot
@@buxxi90 you're right that Chandler's parents messed him up. But to be fair they were still very doting to him in person and always treated him with love. Unlike Judy who always took shots at Monica and wasn't loving in nature to her
Yeah Judy was a complete bitch. One of the worst things she ever did was tell Rachel she was like the daughter she never had. Who the fuck says that to their own daughter’s best friend? I’m so glad my parents were always very considerate of me.
i agree its even more important if the break up was because she cheated on him, but the lover turns out a utter jerk, and then as a revenge u manage the jerk pregnant the cheating bitch
(Just like OP) having gone trough a breakup myself, I think that it's important to know that the other hasn't completely forgotten right away. Not to have the other person 'suffering' as much as you do. I personally hated hearing from others that my ex was having a difficult time. Sure, I wouldn't have wished for him to think; 'Ah, finally, got rid of that coldhearted bitch' and move on to another, but I really did not enjoy hearing it when he missed me or when he posted things on Facebook. I mean, he's an absolute asshole and I never want to see him again, but I wish for him to learn his lesson and grow. Not to be stuck in the past or to have difficulties with meeting other people.
He really wasn't. Ok, in many occasions, like here, he was really sweet to her. But he must have seen his wife always criticizing Monica and yet he didnt' defend her. It really irritated me that Chandler and Monica named their son after him.
Perhaps if he were, he would have helped Ross overcoming his anger with Rachel about the break-up don't you think? It was obvious they had broken up before, Rachel confirmed it three times, but if Jack Geller was a boss he would have reminded and encourage him why giving Rachel a chance and working things out etc.
I think you guys are over reading into it. It's a bloody series at the end of the day, not real life! They only have a limited amount of time to film what they can lol
??? no shit sherlock. one of the fun parts about watching TV, movies, theater, etc. is so the audience can analyze and speculate on characters that give more life to them than what we see on the screen. you are literally going to be talking to a brick wall if you think you're providing new information that friends is just a tv show. sorry you were born without any capacity for imagination.
This must be a strange situation for Jack Gellar to go from comforting his best mate about breaking up with his daughter to comforting his daughter about breaking up with his best mate. Frankly, I think he handled the whole situation really well.
Lol Jen was trying not to crack up over David's hilarious reaction to the drain hair in Ross's cereal. David was phenomenal at physical acting and facial expressions
I always loved the scene with Monica and her dad. Really highlights the bond and unconditional love despite all the idiosyncrasies that the series covers!
Poor Monica, she was so in love with Richard. They were a lovely couple. She has always been very mature for her age, that's why she was well suited with him.
Honestly, poor Monica :( hurt so much because they really loved each other and wanted to he together, the problem was their life goals not them. So mature of Monica to be strong enough to end it and stand her ground, so many people these days that can’t end a relationship no matter how bad it is.
this courtney and elliot scene was one of the most powerful moments of the whole show and made me cry tf out of my eyes. no matter how awkward it is that shes dating his best friend, he still comes to check on her and do what a father should 😭❤️
The last scene of Monica's dad smoking cigar, like if he is doing Richard, always serves as a hint to me that he is here because Richard asks him to, that Richard is being so considerate that he wants Monica to get over him and move on.
I don't think that's true because if he really wanted her to get over him, he wouldn't ask her to marry him in the restaurant in season 6.. just before chandler proposed
I can totally relate to this. Going through a break up myself that was my first real relationship and it meant a lot. Couldn't sleep at all and when I did, only got a few hours in. But after finding the closure that I needed and knowing that he was actually hurt from the break up too, I felt more at ease and started getting better and sleeping better. I'm still hurting now too as its only been a month but also slowly healing from it too.
Yo dude please explain ... how does it make you feel better when you know that your previously called partner is hurting? If you still love him/her (as in monica's case) then you should wish them a happy life (I'm so weirded out by Monica's behavior). If not, then maybe in this case you might wish them suffering, but it would be better for you both that you just forget about him/her.

Last night, my bf and I broke up. I had a panic attack and he was being a total ass so I realized he just didn't really give a damn. We were 2 years and 1 month together. I was having a hard time and remembered this episode. Reading all the comments, I'm happy that I'm not alone and we've all been through this tough shit and maybe that I'd find my very own chandler some day.
Dads are greats for this things. I remember my first real hearth break, I just wasn't hungry, and it lasted for weeks! zain well she now has her own Richard and unfortunately I'm back to square 1 in finding a Richard who use me for money or sex. She was the one that got away. Thank you for your concern ❤
When Jack came to the door and was asking how Monica was holding up, just the feel of that conversation made me remember all the talks my parents would have with me when I was getting dangerously ill from anorexia.
My heart is tearing apart on learning the suffering of my wife while we are separated...I don't want this horrible Schadenfreude...may God put her sorrows in my account and leave her happy forever.
seeing this episode. really helps me out. going thru this 4 months after break up. I never had closure. all i remember if my ex is her face when she broke up with me. I still have this earing of her. contemplating whether to throw it away. her name was monica too.
Jack accepted Monica and Richard's relationship and even came to consult her after the breakup And now imagine one of your friend dating your daughter Jack Geller did something I can never do or imagine or accept
From my experience, falling in love was like taking ecstasy. Incredibly beautiful for a moment but the after effects of it are devastating. At this point in my life, I genuinely couldn’t take that anymore and couldn’t handle the rejection anymore. I’d be dishonest to say it’s not a deep desire of mine, but some people are just too different to find companions. Paraplegics would also love to walk, but it’s not going to happen. You’ve got to find your own way to be happy in life. You’ve got to focus on what you have rather than what you don’t. I took up traveling solo and it’s the most fulfilling and amazing experience you could have.
When Mr. Geller dropped by, I deeply wished my dad would have done that whenever I'm down. It hurts to know how great of a bond others may have with their dad. That's something I can never get in this life.

zain well she now has her own Richard and unfortunately I'm back to square 1 in finding a Richard who use me for money or sex. She was the one that got away. Thank you for your concern ❤
Who won't use me*
The feeling of satisfaction when you know your ex is suffering as well.
When Jack came to the door and was asking how Monica was holding up, just the feel of that conversation made me remember all the talks my parents would have with me when I was getting dangerously ill from anorexia.
Man, Jack looks like a badass smoking that cigar XD
Some things shouldn’t be done through a text or even a phone call…I love her dad actually went over to talk to her then just sit with her 😍
i am getting anxiety watching 7 years old comments under this video .....my hands are shaking ....
3:27 how sweet she is 🖤
My heart is tearing apart on learning the suffering of my wife while we are separated...I don't want this horrible Schadenfreude...may God put her sorrows in my account and leave her happy forever.
This little scene is a great reminder of what an incredible actor Elliott Gould is. So natural.
Grew up watching this series....but now I realise how sad Monica was.....😢
0:30 You can hear somebody in the audience saying ew.
I don’t know how hard it is to get over from break up because I never have relationship 😭
Jack Geller has so many good moments, mostly funny, but this endearing one is probably the best one. He's a really underrated Friends character!
Jack Geller surely knows how to make his daughter sleep. 🤣 So sweet. 💗💗
2:12 cutest face of Monica ever
I loved this scene with Papa Geller
Jack does the good dad thing and is rewarded with a nice cigar and civil war documentary.
seeing this episode. really helps me out. going thru this 4 months after break up. I never had closure. all i remember if my ex is her face when she broke up with me. I still have this earing of her. contemplating whether to throw it away. her name was monica too.
Christian Villarreal throw it do it
"I need to get me some Richard" 😂😂😂
this was one of the best father daughter moments out of movies and Tv shows I've seen
Jack accepted Monica and Richard's relationship and even came to consult her after the breakup
And now imagine one of your friend dating your daughter
Jack Geller did something I can never do or imagine or accept
This whole plot is full of so many lessons
As much as I love chandler, Richard was such a memorbal guy, I love him.
Monica dropping Richard's hair in Ross's serial makes me laugh every time. David has the most amazing facial expressions.
this tells a lot, her finally feeling comfortable enough to sleep right after hearing about richard ,oh mon🥺
I took up traveling solo and it’s the most fulfilling and amazing experience you could have.
the Monacuddle part was so cute aww
This is actually one of the best moments for Jack in my opinion.
I wish my dad was this understanding and make me feel good during my breakups. It would have been so easier
Sometimes all you need is a good talk with your dad. I love this scene 💜
Jack is so sweet in this scene
I am in monica situation now😭
I can feel how painful it is. So hard
Ross's expression at 1:01 😂😂
I'd be beyond happy if i were able to sleep as quickly as Monica
I love that her dad was there 😢
Now,
I can understand that how badly Monica was having to cope up her break up with her sincerely love.
When Mr. Geller dropped by, I deeply wished my dad would have done that whenever I'm down. It hurts to know how great of a bond others may have with their dad. That's something I can never get in this life.
Awwww her dad was always so nice.
Reminds me of his role in "A Bridge Too Far".
Breaking up with someone you loved can be hard
Great scene because Jack is being a great dad . Being their for his daughter when she feeing low
Yeah, since her mother is awful person
Please tell me the season and episode
Love how Jen tryna not to laugh at David when the hair goes Into his cereal ha
Women shouldn't be surprised when men won't call when you tell them NOT to call.
This scene means alot know after you exactly feel what break up is 💔but little did she know that Chandler the true love is waiting for her
I love Tom Sellek, but I hated Richard if you know what I mean, so I found this satisfying. :)
Its Season 3 Episode 1. You're welcome!
