I feel ya, Jay. I married the daughter of a librarian - I read out of self defense. It looks like she has a little bit of open space for more books there, though...
I gotta tell ya there are only 2 differences in the way you made this bookcase and the way we did them back at the custom cabinet shop (and charged a pretty penny for.) One was we used biscuits and glue rather than pocket holes for the case work, and the other was that we used a 1/4" thick back rather than the thicker back you went with. That's it.
That's a seriously nice bookcase that should outlive all of us. Great project!
I'm actually a big fan of his style of cabinet, the simple moulding selection and white colour gives it a really clean look.

My entire business is sponsored by YOU. That means YOU visiting my website, watching my videos, and purchasing my plans allows me to create woodworking content for a living. There are many ways to show your support but purchasing a plan is the best way to do so. Thank you.
Jay, when I watch your videos, I get a major sense of satisfaction. I love your projects, and the reason I said satisfaction earlier, is because you and I work a lot alike. When I watch you do some of the same things I do I in the shop, that makes me feel like I'm doing things right. I'd like to add, I love the way you use pocket holes, and I love your use of materials, especially pine, plywood, and poplar. I use those myself all the time. So, THANKS for the great videos.
You do some quality great work. I finally jumped in this year and started a wood working business built my first book case cabinet and it turned out ok. I learned where I need to adjust and improve and watching your video's has helped learn
I'm from Brazil
I do not understand English
But I follow your work, and I like it a lot.
Everything very well organized and planned
Congrats on getting Jay's Custom Creations to sponsor this one!! Score!
I dabble I'm a little woodwork and I LOVE that table saw with the vaccum. Wish I would have put that one my Christmas wishlist. Your shop is so clean! Love the bookcase and tha ks for the video. We're going to make a bookcase with shelving for all my granddaughters books and puzzles.
Great setup... Once you eliminate all the frustrations of woodworking (dust/making large cuts, space to work) it's really pretty damn easy to make stuff. Great job on the workshop.
You have the most efficient and inviting shop of all the UA-camrs. I love your projects, I built the bunk beds you made a while ago. Thanks for making it look easy!
Very cool, Adderly. Thank you for the feedback and kind words.
Big key to take from this video. Using spacers between each shelf ensures all shelves are evenly spaced and level!
Nice shirt! Was just hanging with Guy this weekend. Great project, very useful as I plan on finishing my attic space and will need some nice shelving for it. Such a different method when you're going to be painting.
Definitely different when paint is involved.
Very happy to see The Wheel of Time series in that bookcase! I love that series!
I already knew I liked your woodwork and videos Jay, but now that I see you have read the Wheel of Time it seals the deal. Top UA-camr 2016!
I read the internet. My wife reads books.
Wow. Love this. As a new to woodworking guy...my mid is continually blown!
Jay, pocket hole plugs with Durham's wood putty are awesome with painting. You'll never see the joint. Great build. Thanks!
Really digging the new shop layout, Jay! Sweet bookcase as well ha
Good looking stuff as always. I'm still trying to warm up to the idea of more painted projects, but this looks good in white.
Thanks for posting such wonderful videos Jay Bates. You are a real inspiration. I really enjoy your well thought out shop, and smooth purposeful camera work. It's great to see your projects come together so clean and simple. I know you put much time and thought into each one and you should know they are appreciated tremendously by individuals like me.
Keep up the great work, please.
THANK YOU very much for the feedback and kind words. Much appreciated.
Well done, and very approachable. Great selection on the shelf too.
Thanks for posting.
A real pro. Love how clean the working area is.
Looks great and works well in the room. Nice job Jay. As always.
Nice shop, excellent workmanship. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thanks for the video Jay. As always very detailed and calm explanation, plus fun video edit. You the man!
I agree that if you know what is going on the shelf then there is no need to make it adjustable. I really like the look and design of this shelf.
It turned out beautifully. Excellent work.
The design of this is really good mate. Thanks for the video.
I really enjoyed the formate of this video, camera angles and overall editing was excellent! Enjoyed the project build...
Hell yeah! Robert Jordan up on the shelves :D Great job as always.
I really like this book shelf! Nice work Jay!
Old that panning and zooming. Much respect sir!
comparing the first bookcase 2013 with this, you have come a long way. The first one was neat, but this is pro work.
Thank you very much.
Very Nicely Made Jay, love it well done.
TC, Barry (from England)
Love the shallow depth, clean line look of this one. Great work!
Thanks!
Well built. Slick looking.
Looks great! I build a smaller bookcase similar to this that I never ended up painting... I should get around to that haha.
Nice work Jay. Got a couple ideas that I will be using for my built in book case
awesome bookcase, and those Robert Jordan books really make it shine ;)
I love your workshop!!!! So well thought out!!! I want one!!!
This bookcase came out awesome!!
Still in love with your miter station
What a great sponsor, good brand to rep! Nice work man, need to make myself a cabinet for resting long crosscuts on the table saw, way safer and more comfortable.
Fold out wing.....
That looks amazing in place. Very fun to watch. Also, whomever those books belong to, great choice, especially the Wheel of Time series. :D
Another awesome project the bookcase looks great.
I like your workshop it looks organised my man could learn something from you! Thank you for this informative video!
I spotted The Chronicles of Narnia. Good read. This bookcase turned out really nice. Good job!
If I had two of me working in the shop I could do what you do too. :) Nice build and they video style is awesome to.
Great work and awesome set up you got there!
Nice Job Jay, i think it would take me my whole life to read that many books.....lol.
Great practical project. Enjoyed it. Thanks.
Looks great Rachel! I'd probably run into it and something would fall off and break! Kiss to Cali! ♥️ 1:47
That looks beautiful Mr Bates
Very clean; nice job with great explanations. Thanks.
Que buen trabajo...Felicitaciones!!
Very nicely done Jay!
I see some familiar favorites there on the shelves. The Robert Jordan Wheel of Time series being among them. Also, being from Michigan originally, I appreciate the homages to the Detroit sport teams :0) Great build and video. Keep it up!
Love the finished product, and I'm a big fan of your videos. I think I've followed you from the start and seen them all. This is the only time I have seen something that I think will probably need addressed over time: You need a center foot or two. Books are heavy. Despite the stiffening you achieve for each shelf by attaching the hardwood strip to the face, the weight of all the shelves and books is on the two outside feet, with 6' of books stacked three shelves high, all on a 3/4" piece of plywood. Over time, your bottom shelf is going to sag, with only the base moulding there to stiffen it. Since the bottom is covered by that base moulding, it would be wise to add a couple more points of contact with the floor underneath to transfer the weight to the floor more evenly, so that the long spans of horizontal plywood are less prone to sag. As I said, great project, great video. Much love.
How will the bottom shelf sag when it is connected along it's full length to the front face frame as well as the plywood back?
Love your workshop Jay
Really love the your videos and awesome woodwork.
your shop looks great.
Looks great sitting there. Nice work.
First video of yours I've watched... SUBSCRIBED!! - Great work!
That came out great, Jay! Good job!
Very nice bookcase. Man your shop looks great.
Thanks, Ted!
That looks great Jay, I really need something like that. And congrats on the sponsorship by Jay those things are rare man
Thanks dude!
Love the classic look.
Jay,, you should start doing classes for underprivileged kids in the neighborhood. Would be awesome for the lower class communities to have these skills
nicely done Jay
Really like the nice clean look of the piece. Especially the trim on the top. Looks great! And you are looking very fashionable in this video...
hahah. Thanks! I figured it was about time to wear my best..
really came out nice ! love it!
Wonderful to have on hand for little ones.
I was totally looking for the Left Behind series on the shelves...
Nice bookcase, Jay. I'm digging your new work flow.
Thanks Sean. Definitely a handy setup.
My exact thoughts!
Great stuff as always Jay!
Beautiful, Jay!
muy bien Jay quedo perfecto
Very informative! Great shop.
That really turned out nice! Did you consider making cutouts for the baseboards so the shelf can sit more flush against the wall?
Very nicely done. I wish we had better prices on plywood in my area.
That is a nice looking back bookcase.
when you were installing the shelves, would it have been easier to start at the top and work toward the bottom? That would let the side force from the pocket screw push the shelf against the spacer instead of away from it. You used this concept when you assembled the case itself.
Very nice work Jay!
hey Jay. I'm new to woodworking. I was just wondering if that plywood was finished on one side. thank you!
Very nice bookcase Jay
I've had problems with latex pain in the past staying tacky for months and coming off when books are removed. How do you get around that?
Great book collection. Wonderful build :)
Came out really nice, some great books in there too 🤓
I've seen some other videos on here about how to build stairs stingers. But I'm curious if you have a video or have ever done this. I am having some hard time understanding it.
Looks awesome!
Love the design. Im just wondering will those shelves be sturdy enough to not bow over time with the weight of the books?
Is there an advantage in building the face frame as a complete unit? I have others cut and attach one piece at a time.
Hi, I'm trying to build a diamond pattern shelf for my wife's salon to hold towel, but I can't find any step by step instructions on how to do it. I was wondering if you have any.
any worries about the bookcase sagging in the middle, or will the baseboard molding on front be enough?
beautiful work
Do the joints you use provide any structural support or are they just so that you don't see the end grain? Also do you have to use joints, would it come out the same if you didn't use joints?
How do you keep the books from sticking to the latex paint? Did you coat the latex with something afterwards? If so what? And what was the application process? Spraying? Wiping? Brushing?
wow amazing video and awesome workshop
Good and informative. Having been a pipefitter and welder in my career of the US Navy (20+ yrs) I have decided to change hobbies and try woodworking. What kind of table are you using that has all of the holes? Also, I have heard mentioned {tortion box (sp?). What is it? I have watched other wood workers videos, but I always come back to yours and that sweet Texan April Wilkerson..lol. Thanks for the great vids.
You have an awesome sponsor.
Hey do a video of the 3d drawing and how to make cut list. Love the building stuff but not a lot of pre build videos that I can find. What program do you use to draw 3d drawing?
Jay- when you screwed the shelves in, did you drill a pilot hole into the vertical pieces, or just go straight into the plywood?
