Wood Turning End Grain Live Edge Pear Bowl

- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Here I am turning a piece of Pear into an end grain bowl. It has a very irregular shaped natural edge rim.
Most fruit wood has very nice colors and this is no exception.
It is finished with sanding sealer and shellac
I also used abrasive paste and polishing paste over the shellac.

Thank you and Happy New Year Gord. Although I fell asleep before the the big moment. Bad sore throat has me dragging.
Hard to believe...when I was a kid 2020 was a dream..

Gary
Hi Gary...lovely bowl...lovely figure in the wood....yes it does look like a plant pot but it looks like a very posh plant pot.....All the best.....Andy
Thank you Andy I am pleased you like it. I would need a liner in it if a plant decided to make it a home.
Take care,
Gary
It is so nice to see someone leave bark on thier project!!! Beautiful piece.
Thank you Sherrye I try to leave the bark when ever I can.
I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Stunning as always Gary. It's always very relaxing & absorbing to see & hear how you go about seeking, developing & finishing turning you beautiful pieces. You bring great pleasure to me in my disability. Thanks.
Thank you so much Donald and I am very happy it brings you pleasurer to watch.
Take care and all the best to you.
Gary
Lotsa color in that pear, Gary. Absolutely love the bark and your treatment of it. Great design, too! But, why no excitement? Where are all the cracks and rock hard knots? You on vacation this week or what? You could have at least had it fly off the lathe! Sheesh, what's this world coming to? LOL!
Great job as always, buddy. Keep'em coming!
Phil
I needed something to calm my nerves down. Between dodging flying bark and glass shaped shavings I was a wreck...lol
Next weeks will be a bit more exciting. It sounded like a helicopter the whole time I was turning it.
Thanks for the chuckle I needed it. I am finally over the frustrated 3 days of fixing videos after my upgrade messed everything up.
Take care my friend,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Oh, yeah, never upgrade. I'm still using a 2011 year version of my editing software. Works great! I don't know what I'd do it if stopped! Yikes!
Another great looking bowl. In making your bowls, you make it look easy.
Thank you Jon I appreciate your comment.
Take care,
Gary
Looks great. I had my doubts but you pulled it off really well !
Thank you Mike it was a real fun piece to turn.
Take care and Happy New Year,
Gary
Nice work, Gary!
Thank you Rick I appreciate your comments.
Gary
Nice vessel, Gary. It looks like decorative plantspot. I'm wondering how it could be looking if there was no crack.
Good job.
Rav
Thank you Rav. Make a lot and coat the inside with epoxy so o could put a plant in it. I have a small cactus plant that needs a nice home.
Take care
Gary
Hi Gary, When I first saw the title I thought great Gary is going to turn 2 bowls. Duh!!! That is great Gary. I have never turned Pear but have turned Apple, which was fantastic. I have quite a few pieces of cherry that are not ready yet but they will mostly be end grain turning and a couple of crotch bowls as well. Take care my friend, Cheers, Huw
Thanks Huw, I think most fruit woods have lots of color. I also have found Apple to be my favorite. I have some plum I have not turned yet but getting anxious to try it. Still a bit green.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Cracking job Gary , lovely grain, colour and bark bark edge . A pretty looking rustic type bowl.
take care mate, Bram
Thank you my friend I appreciate your comment.
Take care Bram,
Gary

Looking forward to the new year. Won't be long now.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 had a great christmas brother spent it with my grand babies seeing the magic in there eyes was the best gift of all . bless ya buddy .
Hi Gary, that’s a pretty little bowl. You and PHIL MUST BE IN THE AAME SCHEDULE OF putting out videos. Doesn’t matter, I look forward each week for y’all’s videos. Concerning the hollowing tool you made, is it straight all the way to the end or does the cutter end have a small left angle to it. I think it’s straight but couldn’t be sure. Thanks so much to take all the time and trouble to make these videos for all of us to enjoy and learn from. U & Phil run a close first for being the best teachers on utube. Thanks a lot.
Thank you I am glad you like it.
The tool is tappered on one side.
Check out my Droop Bowl turning I show it there. I made it like one page store bought ones.
Great job once again Gary! I always look forward to your projects, thanks for sharing!!
Thank you Bruce I am pleased you like it and I appreciate your comments.
Happy New Year to you my friend,
Gary
Great looking pear vassel
Thank you Chris!
Once again, beautiful work. I love how you kept the bark.
I just wish you would wear gloves when you are turning.
Thank you Dina I am very fond of keeping the bark on when I can.
I wear a glove if I am dealing with very hard and dry wood and mostly when roughing it out.
Gary
I like it!! Nice piece of wood turning!!!
Thank you for sharing!!!!
Thank you I am happy you liked it.
Gary
Nice bowl. You and Phil can keep that technique. The risk/reward isn't there for me.
Thank you David I appreciate the comment.
Gary
Beautiful wood and work excellent finish where do you get all of this excellent wood from?
I watch for when people cut trees down and then offer it for free.
There is a local app sort of like Craigslist called Nextdoor.
I have gotten a lot there.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great Job. I had to rewind and hear the type of wood again, I thought it was Pine just by looking at the bark. Really nice looking wood.
Thank you Joey I love turning fruit wood. The bark is kind of like scales on pear. I have some plum that is still green and looking forward to turning it.
Gary
That's a really nice vessel, Gary. Not only is the wood pretty but the end grain turning gave it some unusual pattern. The bark pattern just adds to it too.
Thank you Bill. I really like end grain on the fruit woods. I did an apple that had very nice contrast.
Take care and Happy New Year.
Gary
You’re right-the wood is really pretty! I always enjoy your videos!
Thank you Dianna I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Fruit would is a real treat to turn.
Gary

I like that idea.
Thanks for watching Jen and Happy New Year.
Gary

Thank you Tom
Another beautiful piece of art.
Thank you very much James.
Beautiful Piece Gary . Maybe I should go get some more Pear wood . There is an orchard just up the road they tore out a couple of months ago and there are piles of Pear there .
Thank you Jon and Pear is a beautiful wood. It does crack pretty easily when left as a log so I would turn it green myself.
Well worth turning for sure.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 That is really helpful Gary .
Lovely bowl . 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
Thank you very much J'Lyssa and thanks for watching.

Hi Gary. I worked with a pear, and this is my favorite species of wood, but mine is different from your texture and color. All your bowls are amazing

I try to mention which tool but I probably miss now and then.
Thanks for mentioning it. Knowing it is helpful I will do my best to mention it when I switch tools.
Gary
beautiful piece Mr Gary ....would love to see how you made your hollowing tool !!!!
Thank you very much.
If you watch this video you will see where I stop and make the tool. I did not show the making but I show what it looks like. I do the tool halfway into the video but if you watch the whole thing you will see why I made it.
Thanks for watching.

This would make a great plant pot holder for that special plant to give to that special person. Especially with that top. 👍👍😍
Thank you Norma that is a wonderful idea...and I don't think she has seen this bowl yet.
Gary
it's so good to have my electricity and internet back at home and get my regular fix. the log turned out stunning!!
Thank Jabulani and it is great news you have your power back.
Now you can get back to work.
We have missed your carvings.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Done some work today. I am so rusty!! it's amazing what 3-4 weeks can do to a person.
@@StuffUCanMake Great to here you are going to be back. Have a great New Year Jabulani. Huw
If you have excess N Elm, I would love to do a trade. We don’t have any up here, too damp. Nice end grain bowl. Good choice to shape down the top edge.
I think I will have a bunch. Lot more than I expected. Solid bark but oozing out a lot.
ThePapa1947 Stash a piece or two and I will do a Oregon run sometime in the near future. Any wood requests? I have Holly and a ton of other woods.
What size are you thinking and still as a log? I am going to try and get at this stuff in the next few weeks. We have some other things to take of now that need to be done. And it is really cold right now.
ThePapa1947 any size, shape, cut or uncut. I process my own wood and am part of our club’s wood wrangler team. No rush. Next planned trip south is to tulip field, but may come before then.
I,m new this, so why do you turn your scapper upside down
It is ground on the top and the bottom. That is called a negative rake scraper. It does a great job of smoothing things out and does not catch like a standard scraper.
Here is a video I did on negative rake scrapers:
