Good drainage, avoid weedkiller too close, avoid weed-eater damage to trunk(protect with tomato cage), don’t bury with mulch, don’t over fertilize! Thanks, very helpful video!!
This summer I have been living in 100 degree plus heat , I have been overwatering and I have killed 3 of my trees , well they were seedlings. One thing I have learned is an overwater JM looks like a under watered maple. I am trying to save my last tree and I think I caught it in time. I have planted in clay pots not in the ground. I have them living under the shade of an oak tree. Been an expensive learning curve
My two approaches for avoiding damaging my trees with weed killer or weed wackers is 1) making a wide planting hole/area with woodchip mulch and 2) I have an handle held hedger cutter that also works for grass. So I can trip edges like a barber cutting a fade with clippers so I don't cause any damage.
My number one tip is to use a LOT of sifted and rinsed pumice or similar rock in your container soil mix. Mine is mostly (~60%) pumice and diatomaceous earth granules, mixed with bark, all sifted to remove fine particles that will create mud, silt, sand or concrete that will horribly block drainage. Particle size is extremely important for all of the ingredients of your soil, perhaps more important than what the soil is made out of. I like to imagine the roots like to breathe as much as I do and any compacted soil is suffocating them and drastically reducing growth. In high heat areas, you might want peat for more water retention, but lots of pumice will still create much needed pockets of air throughout it. I still use a little bit of peat for growing in the PNW, too.
Once again, thanks to the Nichols bros for your helpful hints. I have several Mr Maple trees growing in my garden now and today will be transplanting several more. Hopefully, I will be able to come to your nursery this fall and see what you have been making possible for all us JM addicts. Many thanks, keep up the good work!
Yeah I planted two Japanese maples under the drip edge of the roof the soil is Sandy so I’m thinking about putting a diverter to divert the water away because of rain showers
I would only add 1 more tip and it does relate to heat protection in mid summer. I have my collection in pots and when I know it’s early summer it’s time to move them in order for the sun not to burn the. Leaves. On a 100 degree + day with very low humidity and hit winds the leaves will get burnt if left in full sun.
Hi! I’m a new Jap Maple owner, I’m in zone 9A and I’m wondering what’s the maximum amount of sun a Jap Maple can get per day without burning the leaves?
#japanesemaples I’ve found starting some of my smaller plants in pots and placing them where I intend to eventually plant them allows their roots to grow a bit plus gauge if they’ll do well there.
Hi I have a Bloodgood and live in los angeles CA .. last year my leaves dropped really early in the season.. I'm just starting to see new geowth.. it did have scale that I got rid of.. I'm just wondering why the leaves dropped off early. Could it be the scale or is it the hot winds of california..?
My tree was growing great and we had some very windy day and a lot of the leafs curls and dries out. I am not sure if the tree is dead .... I also had people came to do weed control about 2weeks ago. Not sure that could relate. Can I still save the tree ?
Hi @mrmapleshow, can you guys cover how to prune/grow in-ground Japanese maples to maximize their size? I see instructions on how to prune branches/roots to keep them smaller. I would like to know how to get them big. for instance, trimming cause more growth, but do I trim the leader? I have a few that i'm trying to grow taller, but they are staying as pencil thickness, and at 6ft tall, probably too fragile to remove the stake.
I planted J Maple 5 years ago they don’t grow I think I planted to deep, my question is can I replant it on shallow ground for better drainage after five years?
Man I wish I would of thought of the tomato cage thing. I just had a fence put up in my backyard to keep the deer out. Well it was the two legged kind that's the problem. Noel got broken off. I guess I'll be getting another one. PS I had a couple of bamboo stakes and a metal plant tag around it. Nope they got smashed too. 🙃
I’m in southern Mississippi. We’ve been successful with waterfall, emperor/bloodgood, ryusen, and a couple more laceleafs. I’d add that some breeze is key, at least in the deep South. A covered patio almost mimics tree line if facing the right direction, as long as there’s air circulation. 🤷🏻♀️. Someone said that I’m better off planting them underneath pines but not oaks because of soil pH. What’s your thoughts on that?
We have one from a starter. Planter barrel in the back yard. It came with a few leaves. The summer is hot so, oh I've had to adjust watering to not under or over water. The leaves that came with it, dried and fell off. Though the stalk is green and reddish, they've not produced any new leaves yet. Across from it is our Chinese Wisteria, planted at the same time, had much less growth than the Maple, but it is thriving with stems and leaves are happening. Is it just a matter of the Maple readjusting to the new mulch soil and new environment or am I over looking something? We planted them at the beginning of June. July the leaves had dried and died. I pruned the remaining few. it's now August.
I messed up so badly.. Last year, I make 4 additional holes to the side and 4 more on the bottom on the 3 gallons size emperor one.. I thought It would give better drainage.. that wasnt a good idea. I discovered my tree is not growing, and have sun burn scrotch.. the soil were very wet and like a pizza dough. i believe it lead to the wet feet. I wouldnt drill additonal holes again on the nursery pot...
Recently moved two small Japanese maples from pots with attached trays into pots without attached trays for better drainage when I realized soil and roots; soil was totally soaked! So glad I changed out the pots.
I had something chew the base of my Blood Good probably a rabbit. Lucky the trunk was a few inches in diameter but all the bark was chewed off one side. I put pruning sealer on immediately when I noticed. That was last year, since then it’s healed but only around the edges. The whole wound was to large to heal completely and the core of the tree was and still is exposed. I paint on pruning sealer every season just to be safe. The tree seems unaffected but I hope it doesn’t cause problems down the road. Should I rap the trunk with anything to try and promote better healing or prevent disease or do you think the sealer is efficient?
Question for you about broadcast weed killers in the yard... like weed and feed. Seems the weed killer that's in this product will naturally soak into the soil. Wonder what kind of affect this has on the roots of the trees that the weed and feed is applied over?
I have quite a few wide lace leaf maples with branches weeping to the ground and it's not unusual to find me crawling underneath them pulling up weeds. It's also a great opportunity to find seedlings as well as staying away from the maple with a weed eater. Freaked the mail carriers out a few times since they couldn't see me at all when I spoke to them. 😂
I may be guilty of mulching too heavy but my trees seems ok. I never mulch too close to the trunk, I thought it was a good idea so not to dry it out bc I normally plant high. What would be a sign of a tree with too much mulch?
If I have a Japanese maple in my flowerbed, can I plant underneath it? I've heard plants don't do well underneath one because of their fibrous roots. I'm wanting to plant hostas and such underneath.
I don't like fussy plants!!!! So yes if you don't mind pulling a few weeds just keep it clean around the tree .. God bless!!!!! Have a great day!!!!! # Japanese maples!!!!!

It’s a major issue for a lot of people. I lost a very import plant because of an outsourced Weedeater job last year. The guy paid to Weedeater sent a new guy and chopped up an important tree. So it’s near and dear to me to help fix

How far to plant from house for crimson queen? And will the roots interfere with any pipes in the ground
They will not break pipes because they have very non invasive roots but I would recommend 3-6ft distance for shape
What about liquid fertilizers. How about for Bonsai trees?
Only during growing season but not when going dormant
How about scoring the rootball before planting? Is that advisable for a japanese maple as well?
Only out of leaf. It does more damage than good when in leaf
