    Good morning,
I am starting your Divine textured throw and pillows (LW4195). When working row 2 (see below):
Row 2 (right side): Ch 1, working in front loops only, skip the first sc, slip st in next sc and in each sc across, slip st in turning ch, turn-35 sc.
If i skip the first sc and sc in the turning chain I find I have 34 stitches at the end of the row. Am I not reading something, or should I learn to count again.
I can do all the other stitches, but I can't seem to get past row 2.
Thanks for all your beautiful patterns and all your help!
    Glenn

      Dear Glenn,
That is an excellent question! My answer may be kind of geeky, but I'll try to explain nonetheless. When working the "Low Front Ridge", row 1 of this stitch is only surface texture. If you work this row starting in the first sc, the ch-1 turning chain buckles a bit, making it stand out more than I prefer from the other slip stitches that are worked in the front loops. This is why I skip the first stitch. The turning chain makes up (visually) for this. At the end of the row I work in the turning ch because I think it gives a better visual effect. So what about the math?? In this case the stitch count should stay constant (sk first st, which is then added at the end = constant count). For row 2 of the Low Front Ridge, I work in the sc of the row only which again, will maintain the same stitch count. This way the overall look of the square remains the same. Here is the link of a video on this stitch which may better help: ua-cam.com/video/knUe9Yw1uEs/v-deo.html

I recently brought Contemporary Celtic Crochet: 24 Cabled Designs for Sweaters, Scarves, Hats and More, in that book you say that Shadow Box (Multiple of 10 + 1) and yet here you say it is (Multiple of 10 + 2) which is it? Because I am trying to make the Gaithersburg Stole and I want to make it longer.

The multiple used depends on the way a pattern is designed/used within a given pattern.

The plus number is often for any extra stitches in a row. You can add multiples of 12 to the existing chain to lengthen, but you may need to recenter the shadow box motif depending on how many multiples you add. You can do this by dividing the number of stitches in the row by 10, then dividing the remainder by 2. If an odd number, use the turning chain as a stitch to balance out this number.
