i just love that the first thing i see in this video is a human face speaking clearly and not an overblown intro. Fantastically clear, pleasant and specific explanation even for beginners.
this is an awesome video, even after 5 1/2 years. I have been playing around with OBS recently and wondered some things which this video has clarified for me. Thanks!
Guys, your software is excellent, and i was having problems with the OBS recordings until your tech support patiently helped me troubleshoot the problem for all 4 or 5 days of e-mails exchange! you can be sure that if one day i need a professional video editing solution i will definitely buy your product. Meanwhile i will do my best to advertise it to everyone i can! Keep up the good work and all the luck to your projects...
This couldn't be more timely for me! We're starting a family Let's Play channel and I'm new to all of this stuff. Just found HitFilm 3 Express tonight and now I've found this video. Can't wait for the rest in the series. I'll be needing to bring in one to four audio commentary tracks, an iPad/BossJock Sound Effects Cart track, and the gameplay and gameplay audio tracks. Looking forward to some tips and direction and workflows. These are exactly the kinds of tutorials that I've been hoping for. Thanks so much.
+blazingdan So glad that you're finding the channel useful! Be sure to share your family Let's Play channel on our movie wall so we can take a look: hitfilm.com/movies
Handbrake is also good for cellphone video which is usually recorded at variable frame rate leading to out of sync audio on the editing tiimeline too. It's a staple in my video toolbox, and it's free. I use AMD's Raptr for game recording. It works seamlessly in the background and allows you to record in 480-1080p, up to 60fps and a bitrate from 5-50Mb/s. Since I play a fps, I have the timing set up to record when I hit my hotkeys, the last 30 seconds. You can setup the quick record for 5seconds to 10 minutes, or record the session continuously.
You mention that cameras shoot CFR but not always. Cellphone cameras, which many people will be shooting with, shoot in VFR. I've found that in bright daylight shots this is not much of an issue but in low light the audio goes way out of sync. I use Handbrake to fix it but it doesn't always work.
Another great piece of screen capture software is Xsplit, however I noticed audio getting audio out of sync as you mentioned around 5:25. Now I now why and how to fix that! Thanks!
This was a big help! I was getting terribly pixelated game capture of WoW using OBS Classic, but it looks pretty good after making a couple tweaks based on this video. I believe what made the biggest difference was changing Encoding > Max Bitrate from 1000 up to 50000. Thanks!
Hello, I am using OBS Studio to record videos and i wanna set the video in HitFilm, but then it says that it's not the right file... It's .flv, can i change it to a compatible file?
This confirmed some things about keyframes that i suspected. The constant frameate thing was helpful, but i wished he would mention which video container on OBS would be the easiest to edit with, or which handbrake output would be easiest to edit with.
Does HitFilm Express/Pro, OBS, Handbrake, or any of the software options you mention on your channel allow webcam picture-in-picture to be added to the video?
I just use MSI Afterburner. Sure it's meant for temperature monitoring and overclocking, but it has video capture and fps monitoring features. Its file sizes are reasonable (depending on encoding settings). It's free. It isn't that much of a resource hog. You can output to .mkv and/or .avi.
Do i still need to use Handbrake when recording with ShadowPlay (aka GeForce Experience) in 2018? Hasn't Shadowplay been updated to a point where we don't need to use Handbrake to edit our videos on HitFilm Express?
Hey there great video! I just got a webcam, and obs. I am at the point where I have the game in OBS, and my webcam image on that screen as well. How do I actually get to play the game and see my face in the corner while recording?
So if you dont have AMD or Nvidia what do you do? Thank you so much for your film but find I have learnt nothing of use to me. So, very simply can one record game play on a bog standard window 7 or vista laptop, or, horror of horrors, XP? I would like to record some Fight Simulator 98 footage and it doesn't run properly on any OS newer than XP. Sad, I know but blame my parents!
what are some good ways to store gameplay footage since I have limited space on my drives? Are cloud services the best way to go, and if so, are there any free cloud services?
Shadowplay is pretty neat, but it does take some 5-10 frames per second. This may not sound that much, but sometimes it is the difference between decent and unplayable frame rate.
TheShadowFlame according to my little knowledge if you have new nvidia card use geforce experience and for amd gpus use Amd relive. beside these two solutions i think the best software is obs
I don't understand why the handbrake converted footage will "work perfectly" because it was is h264 I believe which is compressed and Hitfilm doesn't deal well with footage like that... Why not convert with MPEG Streamclip to DNxHD?
+fooblefilms we've used H264 footage in HitFilm without problems. It will depend on how the file is created, though - eg, when creating a file in OBS if you leave the keyframe interval on auto it'll negatively impact seeking performance.
You should note that all the settings gone over in OBS are technically now out of date... If you use the old OBS which you still can you can probably still do these but I wanted to add that there is now something called OBS Studio, which is much different, newer and easier to use with an Auto configure wizard built in. You can just make a scene for your game and set your hotkeys and boom NO BLACKSCREEN Issues. I always had that issue or other problems with games like GMOD but now with OBS studio I just open it up and boom I'm recording no issues. I am having a few very minor playback skips in Hitfilm on the content I recorded using OBS studio however which may or may not be related to OBS studio since raw video plays back fine. It only skips some in hitfilm.
Thank you so much! It really really helped me. I edit all my gaming videos in Hitfilm express (believe it or not) on one of my other UA-cam channels. And I've always wondered why the heck the audio was ahead of the video and so forth and so on. So I manually tried to fix those sort of things and you can only guess how that turned out haha. Again thank you :D
+Adrian Unknown it is quite mystifying when it first happen! Matters are complicated by the fact that it doesn't always happen - I think it depends on the overall performance of the game. A game performing consistently at 60fps probably creates a video file with a more stable framerate.
Shadowplay is "ok" but the size of a a recorded session is huge and the hotkeys are tend to become unresponsive. I recently moved to Twitch recording that somewhat more manageable although it requires constant internet connection.
sir can we put artist in 3d helicopter in hitfilm 3 or in ultimate hitfilm 2 like as in hitfilm 4??..sir plz help me!!!..i have already watch the tutorial of hitfilm4..bt cant do it in hitfilm3!! can u give me any help??
If you have a keyframe (I assume these are I-Frames?) at every frame, isn't that equal to a constant bitrate? Don't you lose all the benefits you mentioned before?
+Pfaeff if it was on every frame then, yes, I think you're right. The setting in OBS is in seconds, though, so if you're recording at 60fps that'd be a keyframe every 60 frames. It'll definitely bump up the file size, but it'll also aid seek performance and all those other frames can still be variable. That's our understanding of it, anyway. Gotta love codec shenanigans!
I have OBS screen recorder , so I captured a game play but i have facing a problem that when I capture a game play that's fine. but when i go for watch that game play video which I have been captured the video stuck and stuck after every two second and it running whole video. so how can i fixed it ? have any solution ? and...........yeas new subscriber ,
Good stuff. Shadowplay is great if you can get it to work as it doesn't hook into every title. The same is true of Fraps but it records uncompressed so have a couple hundred gigs free if you record at 60FPS. OBS seems attachable to most things but I struggle with OBS's output, even after a Handbrake pass. Often the encoded quality is nothing like the bitrate settings I specify and CFR often causes dropped frames or mistimed frames that Handbrake and VLC simply drop. I will give your settings a go though. Cheers.
+HitFilm Ah good spot. Will give it a go. Your OBS settings seem to work a treat though. I'm guessing the NVIDIA encoder was the bit I was missing. Thanks muchly!
I have rendered one of my video files 15 different ways with handbrake to a constant frame rate to solve the audio being out of sync over time with hitfilm4 ... still the problem is there. video starts great at the beginning then something like a 20 minute video falls out of sync after 10 minutes or so.... 6 hours dealing with this watching videos reading useless forums.. i have tried everything it seems.. I think ill have to change my editing software. I didnt have this problem with other programs only with Hitfilm4
I'm still using Fraps... :P I have a question though. How well does HitFilm work with Blender? By that I mean how compatible are they with 3D models. Would it be possible to make an object in Blender and then manipulate it in HitFilm. Or is it more of "what happens in blender stays in blender?" Sadly I still have HitFilm Express so I guess it doesn't matter either way as Express doesn't seem to allow 3D objects. :-/ But i was mainly wondering for future reference.
+HitFilm Thanks! I have been getting into more in-depth modelling with blender and I was kinda hoping that somewhere down the line of getting an updated HitFilm when I get more serious about film making.
I have used OBS to record my gameplay footage. And I have an external mic for the type of video I am doing it is easier if i talk while recording as it keeps my ideas flowing. However, no matter what setting I use or try when I import the Audio quickly loses sync. I have tried the change recording rate on OBS because its behind, i have modified frequency. Can anyone suggest what settings I need to synch up my video to hitfilm Its driving me up a wall I tried every forum post, setting, sync up video there has to be something else.
Make sure the format you're recording in is compatible with HitFilm. You can find a list of compatible file formats here: hitfilm.com/express/specs And you can adjust the format you're recording in OBS under Settings > Output > Recording Format - Oli (HitFilm Staff)
+Maurice de Waha The latest free update we released for HitFilm 4 Pro was on the 3rd March. You can find the details here: hitfilm.com/software-update/hitfilm-4-pro Hope that helps!
Hi, sorry to hear you're having trouble recording your games. It's probably best to get in contact with the company who made the software you're using to see if they can provide any technical support.
A 30 second limit on export indicates that the software hasn't been activated yet. You can use your free serial code to activate and remove that restriction.
Are you experiencing these issues with the footage outside of HitFilm or is it only when you've imported the footage? If the issue is with the footage I suggest contacting the creators of your capture software to see if they can assist. If the issue is only when you import it into HitFilm I recommend contact the technical support team: fxhome.com/ask - Oli (HitFilm staff)
