When you over-analyze and overthink a task it can also prevent you from taking action early on, therefore causing you to procrastinate. This is the biggest issue I have when taking on a challenging project at work or studying for an exam.
Procrastination is easy. Whatever is in motion tends to stay in motion. Breaking this is so hard because you have to stop and change direction, but once you stay the course it gets easy again.

Thanks for trying. :-) I have to say however, as a long time procrastinator this did not fit for me at all. I had the feeling that you never truly suffered from the type severe procrastination that I and others have. I often feel that many people don't or maybe they just have a milder version. If all it takes is telling yourself that you need a bigger challenge or rephrasing the tasks - then congratulations! You found a way to fool yourself easily into doing the tasks. However, in this case you are really the polar opposite of many procrastinators. But if you really have problems with it, it is almost debilitating. I realize that the reasons are probably different for everybody, so I will talk only from my perspective. To me, I procrastinate most on tasks that I don't feel I am good enough to do perfectly or tasks that I don't know enough about to do them well. Also a big factor - my emotional reactions to those tasks. I build them up in my head, or rather my gut, to be bad/annoying/hard until I have a strong emotional aversion when I just start to think of them. When the pressure of a deadline has become so unbearable that I have no choice but to do them, I will and often even do them fairly well but I need the extreme pressure to get started and stick to it. And I would have probably done a much better job had I started sooner. This is very harmful and extremely exhausting. Everything in my life felt like I made it much harder for myself, like e.g. my master's degree or getting ahead in my career. I have been trying to find a way out of this for decades. All the self help books didn't help with that. Some advise to "just do it" or "just get started" or "just do it for 10 mins", many say "make to do lists" or - like you - "have more detailed to do lists". These don't address the underlying issue and for me never worked. I am not saying I have a solution, I am still looking for one. I assume it has a lot do with me being a perfectionist and a people pleaser. Not wanting to look bad in front of others and probably some self esteem issues deep down. This got way longer than it should, but I just wanted to give you a different perspective as you don't really seem to suffer from the same kind of procrastination as I do. Also, for others who have similar issues: don't feel bad if all these tips in this video or the self help books don't work for you. You are not alone.
You sound a lot like me. One thing that helps me is I spend time in learning/practicing the tools needed to better in those tasks that I've been afraid to do (scare of imperfection). I'm a programmer and I'd like to give a simple example related to it: Whenever I have an assignment/project, I feels really scary at first if there a new library/framework/language needed for it. So what I do is spend a few days in perfecting the library/framework/language needed. And then I start the project, which I do with utmost perfection in my view. Needless to say, this only works If I start things in time. For that emotional aversion you mentioned, I used to have it a lot. I've recognized it many times and also traced the reason for it -> a bad experience. It's just a past bad experience related to the task you might have that is creating those emotions. All you need is a fresh start for that topic. Start afresh, forget everything, and you will be once again start enjoying it. This all works for me. But I still procrastinate many times xD. Still struggling, figuring out things, hoping to get better with time :)
My situation is similar to yours. Therapy might be helpful if the problem is hindering your life so much. The book Atomic Habits by James Clear has given me a different perspective & some practical tips that I’ve found helpful.
I have always felt like this as well and was diagnosed with ADHD at 23. Don't give up on yourself though. I almost did for the past 2 years which was a very dark time for me but the unhappiness pushed me to change things in my life. This year, I've accomplished so much more than I ever thought I would. It's never easy by any means but we just have to keep pushing ourselves and trying different things. That said, I came to this video because I was slipping into a pit of anxiety-fuelled procrastination again. I decided to search for a Matt D'Avella video because he's usually very motivating for me. So there's never a permanent solution, it's always going to be a constant battle - for most of us I think, but especially for those of us with ADHD. And that's okay, I realized that working hard is not the enemy. I can easily work very very hard when it's something I'm very passionate and excited about and it feels great so I just need to find a way to channel that same energy into the things I have to do. The thing about motivational videos and self-help books is that they oversimplify everything massively. If it was that simple, there wouldn't be an entire industry built around it. There are so many factors involved in why we procrastinate and how to overcome it, I found that the only thing that I can say consistently helps is trying different things, being patient with yourself and persevering in overcoming the difficulties even when it's hard. Books and videos do at least motivate me temporarily to work hard and be productive when I need a push. Make sure have a good support system and don't neglect your mental health or allow yourself to succumb to that feeling of being completely overwhelmed or fall into a pit of guilt and self-loathing! Practicing mindfulness has helped me with things like that. Whenever I start to feel super anxious and overwhelmed, I try to take a step back and think about why I'm feeling that way, and usually I find that my nervous system is just overreacting to something that's not that bad. And reframing what I'm doing helps too, to remind myself that I really do love what I'm working on and the fear of failure is making me hate it. I'm sure there are a lot of things out there that help, if only a little. Just don't give up. There are things that help, even if only a little, for only a short time, but the only way to really fail is to give up. I should add that medication has never really worked out for me because I can't tolerate any of the side effects. Those of us with ADHD have to work a lot harder than neurotypical people to get the same things accomplished but it is not impossible! (Sorry I didn't mean to write an essay lol, but just more proof that I can work really hard and focus when I'm feeling passionate haha and I'm sure you can too!)
I procrastinate literally almost everything: going to school in the morning, going to the store for groceries, taking a shower, cleaning, doing the dishes, going for a walk, sleeping. Even meeting up with friends. It’s so frustrating, I never get things done and I’m always late to everything.

Something that's been helpful for me is procrastinating with more productive methods that are more positive preoccupations rather than aimlessly wasting time, I learn things or do creative stuff that benefits me rather than aimless procrastination ☺️ you're allowed to procrastinate but it's all about balance and making sure you don't over procrastinate ☺️ don't be too hard on yourself too, allow yourself to do things that aren't super productive, like spending time with family or friends or allowing yourself to spend a day or and hour watching Netflix or playing video games etc ☺️ it's each to their own but don't just brand all things non-productive to your main aspirations as automatically bad/negative, just make sure you only procrastinate selectively and being concious of you choosing to procrastinate occasionally rather than on autopilot ☺️❤️ I hope this is helpful to someone ❤️
I've procrastinated writing my book for weeks by: reading, finding and implementing a cleaning schedule, and even calling the relatives I don't like so much. Time to evaluate. Thanks for always posting real stuff when we need it Matt!
I've been procrastinating since March, it's like this covid situation put me in the cycle of days that all look the same and suddenly it's September and I did nothing. I need to work on my school project and it's definitelly the "too hard" situation, I'm incredibly anxious whenever I think about it, I'm full of guitl every evening when I go to sleep knowing I didn't do anything all day... It's so frustraiting and I feel worse every day because of it, but when I finally try and work on the project, I'm so anxious I can't even write a sentece... I tried doing smaller tasks but I guess I didn't try enough. It's really overwhelming...

This is crazy I just put out a video called "the truth why we waste time and procrastination" yesterday! Love the message of this video, I tackle it from a slightly different angle. I think the key to our time-wasting is that by wasting time we are actually buying time to avoid deeper issues in our lives. So my solution is to actually reduce the need for avoidance! I aspire to get to this level one day Matt!
Shifting the default mode negative narrative towards the thing you’re procrastinating on into a positive one by realizing the fact that we as humans naturally gravitate towards the most rewarding activities (neurochemicals) with the least amount of effort, and so that the procrastination merely is a response to a negative association towards the task. It’s really about flipping the script and realizing that what you’re procrastinating on is not that bad, but weighed against other very appealing (easy and stimulating) activities it will seem horrible 😅
Also a major point is perfection. I often tend to overthink things because of perfection. There are mistakes and failures that will occure along the way, but that is good since you can learn from and improve yourself with them. I have this sentence in my head whenever I catch me procrastinating the work "Perfection is an excuse for procastination."
Today is the day I’m starting to be a minimalist. I have watched almost every video of yours Matt about it and it sounds great. Today I start the first step with decluttering and I just want to say thank you for your videos. You have really helped me a lot
Procrastination really highlights that humans have a crazy energy conservation drive. Was pretty advantageous evolutionary speaking, but is horrible right now!
I was listening to a podcast that said, “it’s important to live life by design rather than emotion. Basically, sticking to a routine is what allows us to be the healthiest version of ourselves (especially when you're fighting these demons ex. OCD for me). I’ve had to overhaul how I approach studying, working out and taking care of my brain (journaling) by practising mediocre consistency. Now I try to put in consistent 50-60% effort into my studying, exercise and journaling habit - to make sure I do it I began recording it and posting it on YT. Because historically I have a habit of going too hard, not being able to sustain the Herculean effort, giving up and hating myself. So now I’m trying to give a small, consistent mediocre effort everyday. And its crazy how it adds up.

I really wanted to watch this video to overcome my problem of procrastination when it was posted 2 months ago. I downloaded this video in UA-cam, saved in my watch later and other playlist too.But I didn't watch the video. I procrastinated all these days assuming that the video would be boring and giving myself a hell lot of other excuses. Can't believe that I procrastinated to watch the video made to overcome procrastination 😅 Keeping making great videos like this.
I realized I get really unmotivated if I can't go above and beyond or add in my own originality (eg. if someone else can do it better, what's the point, or if I can't do anything well what's the point), so that point about counterintuitively adding difficulty/more tasks is EXACTLY how my brain works, thank you for that one

This has helped me A LOT! Thankyou! I have been in a rut with studying for a big exam after graduating from undergrad for about 4 months. With only having one thing to do, which is uncommon for me I started to lack motivation causing me to procrastinate more and more. This advice, has helped me not put things off towards the last minute.
Whoa, love the idea that 95% of procrastination is either due to the task being too challenging, or too _boring_ . I've never thought of it that way before, but I can totally see that it's true. Thanks for sharing this perspective!
As much as I also want that to happen--I doubt he will. That's so not Matt, he's not into journaling and meditating (only does it when he really needs to, like when being stuck in a rut or when having some personal issues but not on a regular basis), He's not into "zen" things, the closest thing that I would consider a zen thing--or atleast the closest thing to a zen thing that he does is minimalism. Of course these are just what I have gathered from all of his videos, I'm don't know him personally and I based these off what I see of him as a fan. Maybe coffee and minimalism talks would be much more accurate.
What also happens? A mind game where "too challenging" and "too easy" come together. That's when the task itself is simple but you are putting WAY too high of expectations on it! "It has to be perfect!" I notice this happens to me.
Thank you so much Matt, this video is exactly what I needed today, I had a major sleep deficit whilst having to perform at a really high level and tonight I tried to “get my sleep back” by sleeping for 12 hours, waking up with a terrible migraine. I wanted to do something with my day, but felt no motivation. I wrote down notes from your video to remember them and am now really inspired to fo challenge myself, even though I still very much don’t feel well physically and mentally. However I know some activity is exactly what I need. Thank you
It helps me most to think about the fact that it’s my choice and thinking what I really want. Either you do it or you don’t/waste time you could enjoy differently

Hey, I might have watched thousand videos on procastination (I know, ironic) but this simple yet breakthrough explanation really made things clear for me. I can distinguish what is holding me back fairly easy now, sometimes the task is so boring to start and sometimes its so daunting that you can't get a hold of it. I will definitely try to break down the harder tasks but I still don't know what to do for the boring ones. And thanks Matt for making this video by breaking through the procastination barrier!

Okay so I’ve been procrastinating throughout these months with my school work. I watched bunch of UA-cam videos and all I could see was “Grab a favourite snack” or “play some music” and none of that actually worked. And thank you Matt for bringing that into my attention
I like watching these just because but in terms of helping me overcome procrastination , they are as helpful as saying: Well just do the thing. Adding more stuff to boring work is no motivation for the boring work, and the Problem is not getting ALL your heavy workload done at once, it is about motivation to even start the first bit, because it is such miniscule progress in the grand scheme of things.

My situation is the same. For me, I’ve learned what might be causing is ADHD. I’m going to go get tested for it soon.
@@theeternalseason3890 All the best!
Same with me
procrastination is the ultimate double-edged sword. we get momentary relief only to deal with stress and anxiety later on.

Thanks, Fernando! :)

It's not about laziness or willpower. The reason you procrastinate is because you are not feeling free.

When Matt said “Whatever task you’re working on right now that you’re procrastinating by watching this video...” damn I felt so guilty. 😅
I think my brain just procasitnsed reading this.. damn you brain 😂
Aswin k haha 😂😂

Boring at first then it piles up and piles up that it becomes overwhelming. Thanks for this. Break it up into Small bits is what am doing now.
Also a major point is perfection. I often tend to overthink things because of perfection. There are mistakes and failures that will occure along the way, but that is good since you can learn from and improve yourself with them. I have this sentence in my head whenever I catch me procrastinating the work "Perfection is an excuse for procastination."
The idea “perfection is an excuse for procrastination” dose help a lot, thank you man! Hope we can all overcome our procrastination one day.
Today is the day I’m starting to be a minimalist. I have watched almost every video of yours Matt about it and it sounds great. Today I start the first step with decluttering and I just want to say thank you for your videos. You have really helped me a lot

Matt needs to open a zen, minimalist center. Coffee talks, mediation sessions, weights, and study spaces along with free journals! Haha
This. This needs to be talked about more.
