    Fun fact, but when Frieren says “1 down” after killing the first demon, she uses the Japanese counter for animals versus the Japanese counter for people. So it’s more like “1 animal/beast down.” Instead of one enemy or person.

    As someone with Asperger's: I get what you guys are going for in the discussion and you're pretty much nailing some major points. These demons are very well-written as creatures that don't struggle to understand people (like those with asperger's would), they simply don't try, and that's the dividing factor that makes them good villains. As they said, they don't use human language to understand humans. They're just using it to their own benefit. I love this show and honestly I mostly relate to Frieren herself. Not quite getting others, but trying anyway. It hits home. And that makes villains like these pop.

    Frieren specialized Zoltrak into a demon killing magic, then spread it among every mage so much that it officially became the "ordinary offensive magic". Technically she secretly turned every mage into a demon killing specialist, she hate the demons that much

      She and flamme devoted their whole lives at one point to take em out and frieren did what flamme said, her party defeated the king. I think only after frieren accomplished that long goal she realized there was other things to live for. Unfortunately when she realized they were nearly all gone. This is why this anime became top 5 already for me. That and many other reasons

      I mean there's also the just increibly literal read of: Zoltrak = slayer of man. It's the literal translation of the spells name. So Lugner going "that's not Zoltrak," can very literally be, "that's not a spell for killing man, it's a spell for killing demons."

    • @WhosWhoIsItYou
      @WhosWhoIsItYou Місяць тому

      It's also possible that the Zoltraak she taught to Fern was one she modified specifically for killing demons. If every human mage used that specific version than it wouldn't make sense that it's a new revelation that it's been turned into a demon-killing magic. They would have realized it over the past few decades that humans have also been using that modified spell in their magic system.

      When humans see human features in animals, they feel empathy towards them. Thus one of the biggest reasons dogs and cats were domesticated. The most devious Demons formed themselves to look more humanoid so they would appeal to that empathy. Human speech was another aspect of that. All to help them prey on humans easier.

    The thing with Zoltrak is that Demons only stoped at "dealing with it": since they mostly use their own magic, they didnt bother to learn it, only counter it.
    Humans (and Frieren), on the other hand, developed the shield spell and also modified Zoktrak for their use, now aimed to killing Demons, that's why the demons didnt have a counter for this new version.

    • @andrewmahabir589

      I think the version of Zoltraak that Frieren taught Fern is perhaps one she specifically developed, and isn't the version that's largely propagated human kinds magic system. Otherwise, I imagine they would have long discovered that the spell had been modified to specifically deal with them, and he wouldn't be surprised by a spell that's been used against them for decades now.

    Even the demons resembling humans is probably just an evolutionary thing that let them get closer to their prey. I doubt they're even considered "humanoid" like humans/elves/dwarves. They're just a completely different thing which is why Frieren doesn't attempt to let them atone. To be fair in this world the entire cast is pretty comfortable killing creatures for food or even just due to a potential danger for someone else - we see that in practically every episode.

      Right, and obviously not all demons even look human. Qual didn't look human, and the guy in the brief flashback at the beginning of ep. 7 looked even less human. Frieren literally explained that "demon" is a categorical term for "monsters capable of human speech" in this world. They're fundamentally monsters.

    Re: Frieren vs. demon psychology - The thing about Frieren is that a WHOLE LOT of her personality really isn't because she's an elf. You've seen a few episodes ahead now so you know enough of her backstory to know that she did not have a normal life, even for an elf (if they can be said to have such a thing since the rise of the Demon King). Literally everyone she knew was murdered in front of her when she was a child, then she spent 50-ish years learning "magic for vengeance," then she spent roughly 1000 years in near-total isolation. If she lacked empathy, it was a trauma response.
    Demons, on the other hand, just don't have that wiring. They don't have empathy for each other; they certainly don't have it for their food. Any "society" they have is based on weaker demons doing what they have to do in order to survive under the whims of stronger demons. To put it in terms of stuff we've seen on the show: the demon girl (and really, we don't know how old she was, she may have just looked like a child) didn't offer a replacement daughter out of a desire to make amends. She did that to appease a group that she knew could kill her because she was alone. If there were ever going to be peace with demons, it would have to be on those terms. Humanity would have to approach from a position of overwhelming strength, not empathy and common cause, because demons literally cannot recognize those things.

    to make more clear differences, I think it should be necessary to separate made demons and true demons. Demons that "turns good" are just stories from optimistic people, disney like stories or humans turned into demons like in Demon Slayer who can show still human aspects and reactions. While true demons like in Frieren or original folklore have no room for emotional thinking and have only one goal, devour you.
    FrIeren is not like a demon, she does have emotions, elves does indeed in contrast to demons, it's just that Frieren is the personality type who is mostly poker face (Kuudere) but they internally do feel emotions, only showing them clearly in very excited situations such as when Frieren regrets not spending more time with Himel or when she got access to the books from the dragon's nest.

    I think its important to remember that comparison is consideration of similarities and dissimilarities, and so can involve nuance and context. For example, Frieren can appear cold and detached at times, but is that because she is long lived? Or is it more of a personality variable?
    Like some people can seem detached, if they are extremely laid back and chill, and good at processing trauma or emotions well. Some people can seem detached, if they are struggling, depressed, and struggling with processing trauma or emotions. Some people can seem detached, if they tend to think and process information in a different way, which seems to go against what some consider typical or normal, which may also involve cultural or familiarity variables. Some people can seem detached, because the way their brains and chemicals interact, make their priorities different, and thats before we even start to explore concepts around "beings" that lack "brains" and are wired different physiologically.

    As far as we know, the question should not be wether demons can be good but rather can humans and demons coexists together regardless. Is there a way for demons to come to understand that hunting humans is too resource intensive and is not worth it in the end. But we do not know all that much about demon kind for now so all we can do is guess. I personaly like to entertain the idea that human and demon can coexist because demons ARE inteligent enough to learn new things, even without any feelings like empathy they can still learn to take a different path in life.

    • @alecLogan
      @alecLogan 3 місяці тому +2

      A related issue there being whether humans can co-exist with other _humans_ to begin with, which, the existence of bandits and conflicts outside of those with monsters imply the answer to lean towards ‘no.’
      Throwing demons into the mix and expecting them to catch distinctions _before_ they do something they’ll get targeted over, is a bad bet.

    • @seanfortes7156
      @seanfortes7156 3 місяці тому

      Great points. With your last point, I like to consider that too. There are some barriers that tend to exist to consider, at least as far as overcoming them, like i think the setting is a huge variable to consider. In human prehistoric times, survival was tougher, knowledge was much less than it is in modern times, how people might treat people with what we would call a disorder, would be different. No understanding of how humans operate in depth would be common, no infrastructure to help people. In modern times, the potential for humanity to help those in need is far superior. Still not perfect and it will be likely much better in the future as well. Demons could potentially coexist well with humans, if they are taught well and learn and understand the benefits of coexistence. Even if they may not have any natural or intuitive empathy. There are many animals on Earth that lack human morality, that sort of can coexist with us, a little, albeit its usually us, the humans that need to be worried about in many such exchanges.
      Another variable is the power dynamics. Demons on average seem far more powerful than most humans. Even if a population of humans, were more physically robust, powerful, long lived, that would be a recipe for conflict, but you add in a lack of naturally occurring empathy, and replace it with a more natural intuitive sense for preying on that creature as a predator, and one that can also lure and deceive your prey? Which is kind of why Frieren sort of exists in such a world, along with a few notable powerful humans, elves, etc. Some of these individuals can sort of balance the power enough to offset it. Power enough to retaliate, but not necessarily powerful enough to necessarily turn the other cheek for long enough for demons to realise such acts are pointless (or consider the dynamic between a parent and child, and how children can act out, but parents shouldn't, and should try to teach).

      That was Qual, who created Zoltraak, that they couldn't defeat and had to seal. Aura took an L against the Hero's party and managed to escape. Also remember she didn't come out of hiding until right after Himmel passed away. Why that was, you can make an educated guess lol.

      @@Hikari5x maybe she was smitten by Himmel's charms and had to wait for that "ba-BAKA!" to pass away 😂

    You should really stop acting as if ordinary offensive magic is the weakest type and is a flex to kill the enemies using it. Its ordinary because everyone uses it, not because its weak. The sole reason that shield magic exist was to be able to stop zoltrack from being a one hit kill against most humanoid enemies. But its still an OP laser that can go thru anything that is not shielded. And remember that the shield uses way more magic than the laser.

    Way ahead? By the time you'll finish watching this there will probably be S2 🥲🤦‍♂️
    Watching 1ep/week of a backlog anime is bullcrap, you're just buying time.
    Also Himmel died 50 years after coming back from a 10 year quest where they sealed Qual and this is 30 years after Himmel's death, so Qual was sealed 80-90 years, but we dont know how far before that he developed Zoltrac. Geez🤦‍♂️

    Unlike the embarrassment that is Rings of Power, in which orcs - spawn of Morgoth and inherently evil - have loving wifes and kids, Frieren shows how to actually deal with evil.

      you know i never get why people use praising another IP as a way to crap on a different IP but its really odd in this case considering that Tolkien himself really struggle with the idea of an inheritably evil race since it contrasted with his own catholic beliefs and he constantly went back and forth and whether orcs had souls and if they did could they be redeem.

      @@massmedia7158yeah nothing says nuanced deep writing like Saturday morning cartoon villians who are born evil and just want to attack humans. This show becoming so many’s 1# anime in history is nuts to me sometimes. Not that it’s bad. I like it but I swear people discuss it like the power system is hxh levels deep and the world is the most creative surpassing one piece in world building expansion and like they didn’t just do the chuninn exams/hunter exams in half the series. I get that many anime fans say they relate to being emotionless like frieren even when I think it’s just being shy not emotionaless and that frieren isn’t emotionless. But dang sometimes I fell like for all the hate for rings of power and love for frieren etc (I know frieren is better don’t get me wrong) I am watching another series. Like surju who is usually slower to hype train hop talked about how hearing a character is scared but that’s true courage was mind blowing writing he never heard before and I’m like that was said in Naruto, one piece, aot, etc it’s a common trope. And don’t get me started on the constant comparisons to demon slayer and how zenetsu to frieren fans is a bad version of stark. They aren’t supposed to be doing the same type of story arc development. It screams of people ignoring that we haven’t seen zenetsu full arc and that people compare like this. Goku is a better superman 😮 like people can be similar but very different. No need to knock series down to prop another it never ends cause one show always has features someone else thinks are flaws. Jjk fights and power system hard magic to frieren fans it’s trash cause it’s not slow and melancholy about slice of life. Jjk fans watching naruto. It’s slow and doesn’t have detailed power system with a one hit special. Naruto to one piece fans. One pice is too wacky etc. just like what you like I guess. Still can’t wrap my head around where people say frieren has monster level deep writing and trash on AoT for having bad writing or hxh or whatever is a popular series they bounce off. Oh well.

      @@nichescenes yea and using tolkian of all people to promote the use of an all evil race is just odd considering that he probably be asking the same questions that the normies are about the demons in frieren. Comparisions are fair though and to be honest we can't help but compare media because it allows us to understand a story better when you can see how it contrast another story. for example you are right how the power system in ferieren isn't that deep. its not. very soft magic system with very little rules compare to lets say full metal alchemist and can pretty much do whatever the plot needs. you can also give any character almost any power set thanks to it and it would make sense. on the other hand if i was to compare ferieren magic exam arc to naruto's chuninn i would say the biggest contrast for me at least is how little frieren and fern care about the exam. unlike most shonen stories, the MCs don't really want to take it or get the benefits of winning it and this reflects in how they approach it and how very little stakes we feel during it. i mean the biggest threat to ferieren was a clone of herself. The arc really felt like an excuse to flesh out frieren's relationship with her master and grand master (the orange hair lady and the other elf, can't remember their names.). that's why to me it feels so different. its basically a side quest with no stakes instead of a dangerous obstacle for the MCs to advance and get closer to their goals and dreams.
