I think you just showed me the light! As in getting the starter out, on a 1998 C1500 4.3. I wrestled with it today and called it a day when I made zero progress. After seeing this, I see there is hop! Many thanks for your efforts.

UPDATE: Fought with the starter for a bit, then dropped the oil pan, the truck is getting a new oil pump. So I decided to install a new starter while I was down there. The old one is original from 1998. Dropped the pan, and the starter literally followed it. I hope it goes smooth on the trip back. Thanks again for posting.

I appreciate more people putting up videos for these square body s-10. Like you said, not many videos out there for them. I have two s-10’s I’m trying to learn about but unfortunately they have the other engines in them, not the 4.3 ha my luck.

@@kentuckycornbread8502 I've never had much luck with those 2.5s cause they blow headgaskets Alot or at least I've had it done to me ones ive bought an seen on the forms on Facebook. My 85 S15 orginally was 2.5 an it blew so I swapped to a 2.8 an never had a problem again but I'm on the fence of swapping again to a 4.3 from the 93 but not 100% decided yet

@@KnuckleHeadGarage27 I bought my 2.5 with 90k miles and right now it’s at 220k miles. Zero major problems, just a couple of sensors and injector problems. My 2.5 seems to run fairly cool, when it had 115k mile on it I was 30 miles away from home with a heavily leaking radiator. It made it just fine and I replaced radiator next day. Been driving it an additional 100k since then. I would pick a 2.5 over any of the s-10 engines for longevity.

@@KnuckleHeadGarage27 I have an 01 4.3L 2WD that I can get the outside bolt loose no problem. The bolt nearest the flywheel is wedged in so that I can only get a ¼"
drive socket on it. You can't spray it because the bolt is upside down, I tried hitting it with a hammer not real hard and spraying it anyway with no luck. All I got out of it is pulled muscles in my back and chest, and there aren't enough swear words to relieve the frustration. I was told not to use heat because the starter cover is aluminum and map gas would melt it. I wonder if this is what Dana is referring to? The reason there aren't many videos on this is because I doubt that many people ever got both bolts loose, let alone the shimmy to get it out of the engine. All this to replace the engine that I found out now has a bad head/gas-anitfreeze mix. ANY HELP you or anyone else can give would be appreciated!!!

Thank you for giving bolt size in std and metric. Yes, a starter can be a chore. 2004 s-10 can be a 9 or 11 tooth. No way to know unless you remove or maybe find part # on unit. Then buy one. I want one for a spare.
