New Starter from 1AAuto.com 1aau.to/ia/1AEST00463
The starter is a powerful electric motor that gets your engine to turn over when you turn the key in the ignition switch. If a motor has worn out or become damaged, your vehicle won’t start. This video shows you how to install a new starter on your 1994-2004 Chevy S-10.

Would be awesome if you would identify what size bolts are during removal
for anyone curious on the 2.2 base there's not a lot of videos showing what to do but it's not extremely difficult at all. no, you don't have to take it to a shop if you're patient, just have to remove tranny support bracket that's in the way and get a long extension to take the wires off. took me a little under an hour and a half but it's not that serious. don't have to drop exhaust or anything like that just gotta play tetris for a few minutes. hope this helps
This is for a 4.3. you should put that in the title. It'd be helpful for searches.
you guys have videos on everything for this truck. makes my life so my so much easier. thank you!
For those asking about sizes I have a 97 4.3, the battery is an 8, the 2 bolts for the starter underneath are 14, little connector nut is an 8 as well and the bigger connector nut is 14
13 m for big stud 8 mil for small stud , starter bolts are 13 mil as well ,just took one out of a 2005 Blazer
I think I used 1/2" and 5/16" on the terminals and a 14mm for the mounting bolts
Think? How about it is !!!
Thanks for the Video. 1A has the best "How To" videos. I did have 2 differences when I replaced the starter on my 2002 S10 pickup. The opening behind the wheel was about half the size of the one in this video. To remove the wires I had to drop the starter to get to them. The mounting bolts on my starter were different too. One was above the control arm and was a pain to remove. I had to pull the "easy one to get to" first before I could move the starter and let the one above the control arm drop. Very tight quarters but I was able to replace the starter.
2.2L and the 4.3L are completely different designs good sir.
Yeah uh my 98 4.3 v6 has got less than 50% of that working room as shown in the video
Quick, professional job; and great, professional video--no stumbling around or chit-chat. BUT: this does appear to be a 4.3L V-6 engine (starter on right side of vehicle); on the 2.2L I4, starter is on left side, and exhaust pipe is a significant problem in accessing the starter. Would appreciate a video about that as well (if you haven't done one yet). Thanks!
I think that’s a 2.2L I4
Right the 2.2 is a total pain if you don't have a lift. After getting it out with hands all cut up, I discovered they gave me the wrong starter. Back to the auto parts store. It took up the whole day to put it mildly. This is also a bad design on purpose because they put the solenoid right up against the exhaust pipe so that it burns out! It's a great little truck but Another expensive fix was the ignition coil. It's mounted to the block. so after years of hot and cold it finally cracked in the middle of the freezing winter and would not start. I plan to mount the new one to the firewall!
I took off the exhaust. That’s what you have to do
It definitely is not the 2.2 that is definitely the passenger side of the vehicle I am under the 2.2 right now and starters on the driver side with exhaust in the way like Scott mentioned
This appears to be the ZR2 version of the Blazer. That particular vehicle has a factory installed body lift. The non-ZR2 versions are very different. There is not enough room to get in to access the wire connections. The exhaust manifold is about 2 1/2 inches from the frame and you'd have to get in between them which is not possible. Are the starter wires long enough that you can unhook them once the 2 long bolts are out?
I disconnected my 2003 Chevy S10 Starter, but I can't remove it, there just isn't enough room; I even turned it around, turned it over, it's lacking 1/4 inch to be able to clear it over the I beam that supports the wheel. I wish it was as easy as you are showing on the video...but it's not!
You had it easy..my header comes down more than tht. I had no room to turn the ratchet for it to click to keep going. I had to take it off each time it turned to make it click, and didn't have to turn it 109 different ways to get it out
Good video, but it would have been nice to know the model year / engine size of this particular truck.
For future vids maybe state engine size and required socket sizes? Thanks
YEAH, MAIN REASON I HIT THIS VIDEO WAS TO GET SIZES I NEEDED
@@davidwatsonii9469 did u find what size?
Truck is a 4WD so it’s a 4.3.
Socket is a 13mm.
Hope this helps
Tank you teacher for video inform exactly
I have this problem right now.
Good job God bless you forever
Hmmmmm...I don't have that much room in my 1994 Chevy S10 4.3. I wish I did.
ya, well you for about the aft holding bracket and the exhaust header pipe that's in the way. The bracket prevents it from moving forward, oh, and you can't get to the bolt without welding a special wrench, which I'll do tomorrow. And you can't move the exhaust because one of the bolts is behind the motor mount. Let's see you do my starter that easily. 98 S-10, 2.2L
I do have to say that taking off the wheel is the only way. It gives access to the exhaust flange bolt and he bolt holding the back of the starter bracket. Got it replaced, but can't get rid of this truck soon enough.
YEP!!! NO WAY those starter bolts have that much working space underneath them! The Y-PIPE and the rear part that holds, among other things, the shock, springs and wheel hub are in the way. I HATE STAGED VIDEOS!! The bolt closest the center of the truck is Pinched/Wedged in there and all you can get on it is a 1/4" drive 13mm socket. If you are going to do a video at least tell people Everything they are getting into. Just like Math in High School, SHOW ALL YOUR WORK!!!
I have the same truck 98 2.2 but luckily a custom header so its not really in the way but my problem is getting those bolts off without an air drill, these mfs are stuck in there and I been wd40'n them bastards for an hour now
Welp......so much for me doing this myself. As soon as he said "lift the vehicle" I knew I was calling a mechanic.
great video keep up the great work, you guys are lifesavers
Hi. My 2001 Blazer gets one good start. After I've driven somewhere, parked and begun to leave, I have to attempt to start at least twice before it turns over. Thoughts?
Literally the best start to any video ever 100% subscribing
+Leo Clay Thanks for watching. Buy the part in this video on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
Detail is excelent
This don't look like my 2000 4.3 s10. My starter sits right above the frame and you can't get to the bolts like that
I'm pulling my engine to do the oil pan gasket, among other things, and I've spent more time on that one bolt above the frame than any other part so far lol
Beautiful!
Getting ready to do this job on my ZR2 and where I'm so little to disconnect the wires I didn't even have to remove the tire I was able to just get my arm back there and remove them. Also didn't have to raise or jack the truck up I was just able to lay down an old board I keep around and slide under there. There's advantages to being a woman that can do your own mechanic work. After all my late father who was a US Army mechanic in the 1960s wouldn't let me get my license until I proved I know how to fix issues that can arise. I'd have my certification today if not for the fact the rural southwest VA high school I graduated from in 1998 refused to allow me to take automotive repair, both years I signed up for it they just stuck me in Home Economics which I didn't need because I already knew how to cook, clean and sew. I also already knew how to work on vehicles from my dad and at almost 44 have never taken a single vehicle I've ever owned to the garage for anything and always did the work myself. Still it would have been nice if high school back then wasn't so sexist and would have let me gotten my certificate. If that had happened to me in modern times I'd have had a lawsuit for discrimination.
+Appalachian Woman Thanks for watching our video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
What is the thread pitch and length of the bolts? The aftermarket starter option is a lot smaller than original (after 250K miles, crazy).
Oh my GOD! WOW!
Hola! Tour vídeos aré great, but respect to S10 maybe you can make videos the S10 standar no automátic. My S10 Is 2.2 motor, year 2000. Hola desde Guadalajara, México.
Great video! You got straight to the point, no BS! Done. Thanks
Is this the same procedure for a 4.3 xtreme?
Best video I've seen for a starter
I was most wanting to know sizes of bolts , is that possible
so what do i fo if i dont have a nice clean view literally my shocks in the way and i really dont think i should bother moving the whole thing
what happened to the exhaust pipe (where did it go)?
Great job, thanks for your video.
On my '97 it's not this easy. There is the tranny brace to remove first, the wires at the solenoid and a back-bracket. If you think the starter comes out after air wrenching the two bolts, think again if the tranny brace is in and it has this backing bracket. The Chevy S-10 shop Manual recommends even dropping the exhaust pipe from the header. Then you need to have all the right tools like socket extensions, a special 15mm deep socket for the center tranny brace nut, tiny socket for the solenoid wire, etc. Everything is a tight fit and after a few skinned knuckles you realize you did not have a lift and an air wrench. Oh and remember the spray lubricant, degreaser and breaker bar and the fact you had to do this on the side of the road in the rain.
95 S10 nothing like that!
I have a 1996 Chevy s10 blazer I put a new battery and starter in it and I'm not getting nothing it won't even turn over.
did you check the NSS, fuse relay, etc? is the security light on ?
I’m confused. My starter on my 95 s10 does not just come down. It’s unbolted. In wired. It will not fix to come out. You had to taken something out of the way to get that down. I’ve turned the starter every way possible. Won’t fit to come out.
Easy!
I have a 2001 gmc Sonoma. Does this video apply to my truck too or just the s-10’s? I know they’re practically the same truck but still want to ask before I get in there
+Caroline Watson This procedure might be different for your application. We do not currently have a how-to video for this particular year, make and model. Thank you for asking! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
No , and remember this videos are all just to get views no really to help
NO WAY JOSE
what year ? what motor size in video !
Would be nice if the 4.3 99 i have had that much room
Its it on driver or passenger side? I have new battery turn key nothing no power no horn .I ran a jumper aire from starter relay fuse to battery and i got 2 clicks do you think this is the starter???? Please help????
It's the passenger side and if you got no power make sure your battery is a operating voltage and make sure the terminals are clean as well
not possible on standard 94 s10 comes off from bottom of vehicle
Would of been nice which side it is
The easiest thing I've ever done on this truck 😆😆
2003 2.2 you have to drop exhaust no other way and the bolts are snapping off need a torch ! Better yet take it to a shop !
I appreciate your videos , I have saved lots of money by doing it by myself, thanks to this videos . But most important how lot of mechanics are not honest. I have witnessed how woman get over charged for simple work on their cars. This one Asian mechanic was charging me $350 to replace one of the oxigen sensors 😮 and wanted me to leave my truck over the weekend. I said wtf…. I guess he wanted to break stuff in my truck to try to tell me it had to be replaced .
Would be nice to know Bolts & Nuts size.
+@randyowens3947 Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team. 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
I have a Chevy s10 1998 has no crank or start dash lights up new battery wat could be the cause of no crank or start oh yea fuse an relay are good also
Same issue, any idea what it was yet? Lol
@@patschoen1202 I just took my starter out off but can’t take it out of the area cuz I have a 4wheel not 2 wheel it’s in a small area
Mine turned out to be the starter, its 4wd, but solid axle swapped, so it came out without issue, apparently there is a certain way it has to come out
What size engine is this? Thanks.
4.3
Why not grease up the bolts before you put the nut back?
Inch pounds Is iqual a 12 foot punds?
No way in 2003 s-10
Where’s the starter on a 2003?
Can a bad starter cause my truck not to start when warmed up? Starts when cold
Won't start, or won't crank?
Haynes says about the vehicle had to start when it is hot.
1 air filter clogged
2 fault in the fuel or electrical systems
3 fuel not reaching the injectors
It would be nice if you mentioned I had to fucking drop the transmission to make room to get it out. Thanks.
How a remove a 1998 chevy s10
Starer is not that eat to remove.
i have a 98 s10 that i am changing the starter on but i am having a hard time getting the long bolt to start back , any suggestions ?
He didn't even say what wheel he took off
Aluminum 2000 to 2005 Chevy Blazer 15' rims 80ftlbs only ------------ 100ft lbs is too much And only for Steel rims
Be nice to tell what side of the truck you take the wheel off. Went to another video ans was one of the first things they tell us - even looking at the beginning of your video a number of times. It's very hard to tell.
I paused the video to look at the splash guard on the wheel well to determine the side of the vehicle. Passenger side.
Hello. Your videos don’t do any help if you don’t include the sizes of te sockets you are using. Maybe rest of tod videos you can do that for everyone. Thank you.
This is not a viable option for my 99.
Thumbnail wrong lol
kinda unsatisfied because you didn't strat it
U forgot to start the vehicle
Would of been a real useful video had the bolt sizes been mentioned, probably the main reason most of us seek this type of video absolute waste of time
