I was inspired by both and it's definitely noticable.. My old bandmates used to give me shit when I was in my teens, relatively new to playing bass, and hadn't found my own sound yet. Like they called me baby geezer burton lol but I sucked so bad They were all older than me and it was all in good fun... Nobody holds a candle to those two dudes in my opinion.. I only WISH to be that good 🤯
By what I read, Geezer was a (six-string) guitarist, in the first instance. Between that experience and hearing (and copying) how Paul McCartney played such an active and melodic bass line, it's not a wonder Geezer so ably conjured musical daemons.
To anyone trying to emulate Geezer's tone, it's nigh impossible because you aren't Geezer Butler, but you can come pretty damn close by playing aggressively over the fret board with your right hand (and when I say say aggressively, I *mean* it, Geezer had some incredible endurance in his right hand because he's basically knocking the snot out of those strings) and using a P-Bass with the tone rolled about 80% the way off. Something people might also fight me on is the type of strings. Closest thing to his sound I've ever achieved was with medium gauge D'Adario flatwound strings, but it's most likely he's using rounds, so in regards to which strings you use I suppose just run whatever sounds right.
Cheeto it’s likely he did, the crunchy high end he has certainly sounds like the voice of a J bass’ neck pickup, but perhaps it’s just my P letting me get a closer approximation to his sound. The thing is every bass kinda has its own mojo, every bass is wired with different stuff, even if they’re wired in the same way. No two j basses will sound entirely identical. Hell, no two pickups will ever sound entirely identical. The best advice I can give to anyone trying to emulate their hero’s is to throw the idea of gear defining anything right out the friggin window and really study their technique. THAT’S where a musician’s voice comes from.
I watch some bass UA-camrs and I am in awe of their slap technique, kind of makes me think what's the point of carrying on, I'll never be that good, but then I listen especially to Geezer Butler and Steve Harris and I think, hey that's how I play and I feel much better because I realise that I am not so bad after all, that I have learned from the best in their field....not Geezer good but who is?
