    Geezer Butler is, easily, one of the most influential rock bassists of all time. Geezer and Entwhislte were the innovative masters of pentatonic modal style of bass playing.

    • @AdenJama
      @AdenJama 10 років тому +11

      Yeah, I agree that the sound has changed massively. The new sound is probably an amalgam of a lot of different factors. Strings, pickups, amplifiers, volume, compression, loudspeakers, mixers etc. but also the way music is recorded nowadays.

      Still, it's a very heavy and powerful sound, but I agree... That wubble sound from late 60's and early 70's is kinda hard to get now.

      Usually to get such sounds you need that (i assume) 100 watt Laney with the right cab and it has to be at 100% volume so no fools is gonna achieve that without some serious cash or proper studio and the Laney is gonna burnup up its tubes which are going extinct atm cos russia started a war

    • @jaybirdk7414
      @jaybirdk7414 2 місяці тому

      Geezer got a lot of that “wobble” from finger vibrato, much the same way that Tony did with the guitar. It’s negligible to the untrained ear, but the more astute bass disciple will immediately notice Butler’s use of string bends. However drastic or slight they were, they made a huge impact on heavy metal bass guitar that so few seem to be able to replicate.
      I can’t imagine why; I LOVE throwing that Geezer Butler string wiggle into a jam!

    This past spring I bought a 1985 Epiphone, P style bass guitar, for 65 bucks. The electronics were shot, but the rest of it was fine. The maple fretboard on top of a maple neck and the yellowing "Olympic" white P body is as classic Fender as it gets without buying a Fender. So only one thing to do to make this bass playable, replace the electronics and that's where EMG comes in. I bought the EMG GZR "P" set. It actually took longer to get the pickguard off and back on than it did to install the pups. After that was done I installed a set of flats, did a full set up, truss, action, and intonation, and it was off to the races. For a classic rock and roll sound from the 60s and 70s this thing nails it. I currently own 6 basses and this one with the EMG pups is the fav among my musician friends as far as sound goes of all the basses I currently own. It's also the bass that I have the least amount of money in, go figure. I just bought a Jaguar bass yesterday, P/J set up, and the electronics are shot. I know what pups are going to be going in that one soon. Thanks EMG for a great product!

      +Blake Rios? Are they? I need a new set and I'm wondering if they really are worth it. What set would you advise, given the fact that I like my strings flexible enough, and totally versatile in the meantime? Do they prevent you from bleeding your shit off and getting blisters at the same time? (I play A LOT, no pause, and I end up crying and regretting at the end). I had my fair lot of trials with a lot of brands, except for DR. Anyway, if you can help me, you'd be a brohim. Thanks, mate.

      +Mart Mich I use the DR hi-beams for my fender. In my opinion they are great and it prevents blister (which is painful) when you sweat while playing.

      +Mart Mich I've use them for a couple of months and haven't had blisters like I did with some other brand (forgot name) but yeah it's just my opinion

      Tell me about it, my index is still recovering from yesterday's playing. Well, I'll give it a shot then, thanks for the quick response by the way! You're the man!

      It's no wonder he'd get blisters. I flipped out when i learned frank bello plays fingerstyle as well, he must be absolutely hammering it.

    He got me into using DR coated strings and now if I get a new bass before I’ve left the shop it gets a new set of Red Devils or black beauties
