The Arsenal team that went through the 2003/04 season unbeaten has a good claim to be the best side ever seen in the Premier League. This video examines the tactical set-up employed by Arsene Wenger throughout this season.

Gilberto Silva is so underrated

Not underrated in Brazil!
not in PES 6 nor 4
He was terrific. Now we have Torreira, done well in his first season next season even better.
@@bakaweiner6956 yeh baby
Here come the snide remarks in the comments section.
This team was built without the aid of oil money.
why do you think arsenal has underachieved for so many years now? is it because they don't spend as much as the other top sides?
They don't utilize the capital that they do have, which is plenty.
The current owner has married into the Walmart family empire, where increasing profit for the purpose of drawing personal dividend is the only goal.
For additional proof, see the current state of the owner's U.S.A. based "sport" franchises - Denver Nuggets (NBA), Colorado Rapids (MLS) and Los Angeles Rams (NFL).
The Los Angeles Rams are currently valued in the top six most financially enriched teams in the NFL, yet in the season just finished, they finished dead last in their league.
The owner circumvented U.S.A. regulations regarding multi - franchise ownership by signing the Rapids and Nuggets over to his son.
In short, greed and nepotism.
Gary Cheshire Arsenal fans cannot talk about money, they are the original money club, over 50 years ago they bought their way into the top tier of English football. And not like Chelsea by buying players they literally got out the chequebook and bribed their way to a seat at the top table.
Arsenal were called "The Bank Of England" club in the 1930's.
It is now the 21st century.
In the 21st century, two former flat-lining clubs in England rose to prominence, thanks to the injection of dubiously acquired oil fortunes.
Please stay relevant.
By the way, here's proof that refutes the misguided suggestion that Arsenal were the "original money club".
www.goalpostbooks.co.uk/classic-clubs-preston-north-end-the-original-invincibles/
You forgot to mention the physical strength and roughness of that side.
yeah they were MEN , current arsenal teams are pussies
Except for Sanchez who's off anyway
This comment is from a fan of a team which at that time had players like Keane and Butt. :)
I was saying that as a compliment. This Arsenal side needs to be more physical, because they aren't Barcelona.
I used to love the battles between United and Arsenal in that era. It was a proper football match aswell as a tactical battle.
The one thing I think everyone forgets is that this side was DEEP! I mean they had pretty decent players coming off the bench: Kanu, Reyes, Edu, Wiltord, Keown, and Ray Parlour could all come in and get the job done if one of the starters wasn't fit!
Fabregas too
Kanu wasn't "decent" the only thing that stopped him from becoming a legend like bergkamp and pires was his heart problem
rvp and fabregas were crazy...so young but so mature and talented
Kanu what a good backup and was very strong but could finish, Reyes was exciting he cups play either side and was lethal at his best, Wiltford very underrated a classy player and caused problems and Parlour and Keown both coming towards the end but both were leaders
But they didn't have backup for Pires and Ljungberg
this is why wenger did not deserve abuse from our fans. his tactics required excellence and the club did not give him funds to get the quality players he needed. it is was solely down to wenger that we finished in the top 4 every year, it was down to his outstanding tactics we managed to do this with such an underwhelming squad. now that the club has somewhat figured itself out, imagine what wenger could have done with this team if he was just given a couple more seasons
I always said that as a fan, had wenger left arsenal, we'll be doomed into competeng for 10th place in the league. Wenger turning shit players into gold. He's a real coach of the decade. If he managing barcelona, he'll be even greater than pep
ACL sad but true. Wenger wasn’t able to sign the right players to replace stars like Henry, Vieira or Lehman all at the same time. At one point or another his squad had fatal flaws like Alumnia as GK from 08-12, or a weak/inconsistent MID with Ramsey and Wilshere from 12-16, or the lack of a world class striker after RVP left until just recently. Currently we got the most stable looking squad but we’ll see what happens.
And now we miss him.
Arteta is doing wonders at the moment, but I'm just sad that Arsene never had as good of a team as today's after the invincibles. He could do wonders we've never seen before with this team
That team was so good I'm surprised they didn't win UCL
Boldwin Thoka I actually believe they could have won it that season. However, I think they would not have gone unbeaten in the league had they won the CL that year.
Floris I reckon they would've taken a loss and and treble
chelsea knocked them out in the QF
And Chelsea won fuck all that season when Arsenal won the league, unbeaten. L
Floris and Chelsea actually won the UCL....against Bayern.....in their own backyard. There's only one true club in London and it sure as hell isn't Arsenal #KTBFFH
Watching makes me almost feel sad, not a single modern arsenal player would have a chance getting into that team.
Alexis Sanchez?
Sanchez is fantastic but he can't displace Pires or Ljungberg. They were brilliant. Never lost the ball. I love Sanchez but he tends to be a ball hog. If Oil worked hard enough he could get into this team
ozil's great, but he's no Bergkamp.
Amen
I think Alexis could
It's easy, give the ball to Bergkamp, relax back and watch the magic happen.
what a team that was
That was their year to win the treble and they blew it.
Losing to Man Utd in the semi of the FA cup, Millwall were the other finalist's.
But the biggest of them all was losing to Chelsea in the QF of UCL after beating them twice in the league, take a look at the SF lineup up - Chelsea, Monaco, Porto, Deportivo, all the dragons had been slain in the round of 16 and QF, that could and should have been their year.
Exactly my point! People who only look at their league season are delusional. I mean, they absolutely blew it in the Champions League.
They won the league, well done, but nowhere near as good as Ferguson's United or Klopp's Liverpool.
@@Maxim89Il He said blew the chance, not that they were not good. Klopp's Liverpool is a joke before invincibles. Treble winners are still behind Invincibles without a doubt. What are you on about?
League titles are nowhere near as important as the top continental trophy. While Arsenal had an undefeated season (in which they also drew a lot, which is fine, better than losing), they only made it as far as the 1/4 final in Europe that season.
That already makes modern Liverpool better than them. You know what, last years City were not "invincible", but still scored more on European level.
@@Maxim89Il they lost to chesea who we defeated twice that season. There's lot of luck involved in Europe. A mistake or a momentary luck can decide everything. League is all about persistance and right mind. I think invincibles severely underrated, considering how difficult it is to maintain the consistency across 9 montha
Maxim Ilushenkov smoking crack
This is one of the best review I have seen on Invincible tactics. The interchanging of positions + pace was the key but I also like the fact that you highlighted the most wrong common knowledge of the actual shape. Although on paper it was a simple 4-4-2 but Bergkamp was not a striker, in fact a Trequartista and one of the rarest even seen in English Football.
what is a trequartista?
Wtf is that?
That's what you would call the playmaker who wears the 10 shirt.
@@competitivegamingpakistan Someone who plays 3-quarters (tre-quart) down the pitch. Higher than the midfield line (1/2) but not quite a striker. :)
@@finding_aether Ok, so like a CF?
I support Arsenal because they are one of the few clubs left with some loyalty. They also have a strong history and have had some real legends play for them. And also there's just something special about them. #umaxitgiveaway3
The way they played. It was Barca in England.
Loyalty....Let's ask Cole, Fabregas, Henry, Van Persie, Nasri, Toure or Sanchez about that.
that's why I love this club, they really work their way up from decent club to a big club, unlike those clubs with bunch of oil money
@@edifysalim5359 Arsenal a big club????
Big clubs have won the european cup
@@samwheet9574 & we're known as the invincibles & are the record holders for most fa cups.
you dont need a european cup to be a big club, it does massively help but your logic is just dumb
Cole-Pires-Henry was the best left flank in PL history.
@Baby Yoda Up In This Mofo If we are talking about the United Ronaldo? then the 3 of them combined might be able to match Henry alone lmao
ismail adam you can’t compare Henry to Ronaldo different playing tactics, Henry is a goat, when ronaldo finishes playing he will be in the same league. Till then people like Henry, bergkamp are above him.
ismail adam footballer of the year is rubbish and you know this unless you’re deluded, the difference about bergkamp and Henry with Ronaldo is pretty straightforward, arsenal played 4-4-2 with bergkamp and Henry up front and bergkamp dropping back and Henry drifting to the left wing waiting for the counter. Ronaldo plays completely different if you think you can compare the both is just stupid. Bergkamp has done this every since I watched him at Ajax, I might be a bergkamp fan boy but I rate him above 99% of the footballers the only few that are better is zi zi buck tooth Ronaldo and a few others. I understand you love ronaldo But open you’re eyes.
ismail adam I am forty years old, also seeing I am Dutch and a Ajax supporter, ever since I was 4 . It was either Ajax who my dad support or Fortuna Sittard which my mum supported. Also on a side note If you believe me or not I don’t give two cents,it’s it’s one of my best memories growing up 😀
@@Hxmgreat ronaldo scored 42 goals in a seson for united in 07/08 . need i say more
You're insulting people left, right and centre with the player drawings. Look at poor Vieira 1:20 :p It looks like he ate Rooney for breakfast.

Can you please do a Video on The Differences between a Manager and a Coach
This channel amazes me. Everytime. The amount of work involved for a video is just magnificent to ponder.
Thankyou, been asking this for a while now and finally you have made a video of it!! Cheers!!
can you do Bayern Munchen's treble winning side of 2012/2013 please?
love your content!

Best team of all time
im a manutd fan and always fancy our 2008 team as the best or atleast the best in the european style (direct solid and dynamique) but that 2013 are the strongest and the most entertainning team i ve ever seen
Pls
Barca 09/10 was the best team of all time
FINALLY!!!Thanks guys. as I expected, this is great, quality stuff. keep up the good work!
I cant put into words how good a team that was to watch live, other than every minute watching the lads was a pleasure.
Thank you for making this video, it was nice getting to reminisce. Best team the PL has ever seen, in my slightly biased opinion, of course. And a feat that I don't think will ever be repeated.
Video on the French national team in WC 1998 / Spain in Euro 2008 and WC 2010 one of these days! I love your videos man - they are very knowledgeable and informative.

Could you guys also considering doing something on Asian football? Namely the currently dangerous looking Jeju United in the Asian Champions League
The good ol' days for Arsenal.
Such lovely memories.
Arsenal fan here, I love this, clearly explained. Will never forget that gunners team, loved watching them every week, one of a kind. Liverpool are the most entertaining team now, hope they win the PL.

I love your tactical analysis...
Wish we could play with this team in fifa 19 😂
tactics simplified: don't lose
Step 2: Win
Step 3: repeat steps 1 & 2

Nice video gave me inspiration to change the tactics in our club
awesome! i was hoping you did an episode on this.
Thanks Maurice! - Danny
Excellent analysis.
used to love the way they'd push forward and force a goal or 2 within the first 10 minutes. was amazing how often they just got ahead early and squeezed the game
Thank you! This is brilliant!
You're welcome! - Danny
How the mighty have fallen
Just like Nokia downfall
farman siddiqui yeah qualifying for europa for the first time in 20 years instead of the champions league proper fall from glory isn't it mate
"Very cheap players" like Xhaka, Sanchez, Ozil, Mustafi, Perez...
steven cellugi were on our way up now
YaBoi48 Lol. Good joke
The one-two-touch game, that was essentially the most iconic part of the side and Wenger. Should have mentioned that and maybe a lot more about Henry and Bergkamp
Awesome video!
Thanks! - Danny
It would be interesting to compare the Monaco team of the 96-97 season to this current Monaco team as they are pretty similar and gave as few modern legends we see today.
Another interesting tactic is the infamous 1995 Ajax Squad that went unbeaten and won the league with their 3-4-3
The problem with Arsenal today is Wenger not recruiting the right player.
and they didn't had the fight in them most of the season
Thanks Ilham, I never would've guessed.
Who do you think he should recruit? - Danny
Players like Kane, Alli, Son, Eriksen should be in Wenger's radar. Spurs is now doing what Arsenal did "we dont buy superstars, but we make them"
But I don't understand why they aren't in his radar, if he had previously built a team that went 49 games unbeaten, then surely he can't be that foolish as to not spot players such as Kante over Xhaka for the same price, for example.
Would love to see you guys making a "tactics explained" video about Karim Benzema's role at Real Madrid.
Can you do one on the Liverpool invincible seas- ... o wait, nvm
Oh, wait... Liverpool have won the Champions League 6 times.
Maxim Ilushenkov actually 2 since it was known as the ucl twat
I was gonna question why you two got so butthurt but then I realized how difficult it must be to support arsenal nowadays
@@Maxim89Il And spent 30 years without winning a League title.

I subbed when you had like 5k.
Could you talk about Mighty Magiars or Johan Cruyfs(I know that he was a player) Dutch team?
🐐!!!🏆 no one can claim this beauty
Arsene still plays that way today. the problem is........
1. If a you-tuber has figured this out, you can bet your house top managers have also figured this out.
2. When the fluidity is flowing, on their day they are almost unplayable, but when the fluidity is not there they get found out.
3.The season 03/04 had Gilberto/Viera as the Holding midfielders. They had ability to strong-arm you if they weren't outplaying you. Santi is our best CM by far, but he ain't gonna push u off the ball. Coquelin is strong but not tough as Hazard showed. Viera would have dropped him before the box. Fuck it that's enough
Do you guys make posters of the final write up you show at the end? Think it would be quite a cool thing to be able to buy
We've had a few people ask this before. It's definitely something we could look into doing! - Danny
Finally 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
You should do video on your perfect tatics, team and formation
When I think about it is the Premier League easier to win if you're a counter attacking side. Chelsea this season, Leicester last season; to an extent the invincibles of Arsenal and Manchester United under Alex Ferguson. Is the English style of football naturally counter attacking?
This might explain why Pep has flopped in the Premier League.
Jack Cerullo
The game is frenetic in the premier league. Crowd lack patience. Defenders lack patience. Referees empathise with bad timed tackles and the whole culture promotes stupid bravery over protecting the brilliance. Media don't help. Especially ex-pros from the 80s.
Players can pass the ball and be composed but in England (apart from some foreigners) it's done for the sake of it, rather than as a tactical trap. After a very short while, they look for the man with all the brilliance or someone near him - half of the time not succeeding. Play him in and he either tries to combine with someone else up there or goes on his own. The ball is turned over. Then another counter the opposite way and so on and so forth until one team has scored more goals. Bit like the NBA but without the intelligent tactics. Constant Turnovers & brilliant goalscoring (& attempts) contribute to fans thinking it's the most exciting league in the world. There is way more intelligent tactical football for football purists in Germany, Spain and France and to a certain extent Italy but not as much as the other 3 - plus their best sides beat ours in ECL & Europa.
Best league in the world ? Nah !! Most exciting? Probably, if you like lots of goalmouth action, instead of tactical and technical brilliance with goals as the reward for that.
Anything other than fast break with superb attacking players just doesn't work in EPL and won't for a while.
wouldn't go that far as to say pep flopped this season. but yeah he isn't as great as many expected back before the season started.
not to man utd though, they were relying both franks to overlap to create space and crosses as they had top class finisher to pump in goals
Most good sides are great at counter attacking, just look at Real under almost all of their recent coaches. Like Xabi said recently, you need the right players. He mentioned that they couldn't really play that type of style with Spain because while they had small, technically superb players, they weren't really race horses, but the team he was in at Real was another story.
While i largely agree that Wenger is a laughing stock now, he did assemble one of the most smoothest and classy teams to grace the premierleague.
I think the main difference between the current Arsenal team and the one that went undefeated for a season. Is that the Invincibles was a bunch of men playing simple yet effective football. as apposed to what they have now - a bunch of very skillful boys, whom cant decide weather their wave to the crowd is saying goodbye or thank you
I think that we don't have the players to effectively use the system Wenger is trying to employ
Le'Soul Auctioneer the way he was treated by so many of our fans was disgraceful. The banners, the AFTV videos, it’s genuinely the most ashamed I’ve felt to be apart of something.
@@liamcog Agreed, what disgraceful behaviour.
I'm enjoying watching Monaco now, always remind me of the pacey and fluent attack
Amazing team, the best structure in the history of football
Remarkable team and were a joy to watch
What have we become 💔
The Arsenal of the late nineties and noughties was one of the most exciting and exhilarating teams to grace the modern game. I would dare to say it left with Henry.
and people say gooners are arrogant. with a team like that its justified.
Never won the CL
Well, that season they were eliminated in the 1/4 final.
I'm a Man United fan, but I'd have to say that, looking at it as a purist, that Arsenal team was a better side to watch. At the time I absolutely loathed them, but now I feel privileged to have watched such a great team.
I think you should please do a piece on the role of Paul Scholes
LvG Ajax please
Yes please do this
LvG Manchester United Please. Genius system.
Will Gibson lmao
Will Gibson yessss
Ajax 95: yes please!
Bergkamp = master of ball control.
Great video as always guys. I recognize Real Madrid doesn't have a clear tactical identity at the moment however they won La liga with some impressive stats. I believe 20 players played 1000+ minutes and every member of the squad scored barring 2. Important goals too. Could you do something maybe about Zidanes rotation policy considering they're also in the Champions league final
We have a CL Final preview out next week! - Danny
uMAXit Football awesome. looking forward to it
Can you please do one about the 2004 EURO WINNERS GREECE? How did they manage to beat Portugal and the other top teams in that tournament?
Thank you for finally doing a video on the invincibles it amazing he had a good system that work in EPL and still under achieved in Europe
People would have started protesting outside our houses if we didn't cover this before long! - Danny
uMAXit Football you did a fantastic job would like if you do the fall of AC Milan or their tactics
Playing against this team was like fighting against the Spartans especially the rivalry between Keane and Viera.
I know I am biased but Bergkamp was my favorite player of all time. As an American they didn't show football on TV but he is the reason I love the game. I know Henry gets all the hype but damn look at the squad. Bergkamp, Henry, Pires, Viera, Lauren, Ljungberg, Lehmann, Cole all led by Wenger who England didn't even know. I mean what is not to like?
Arsenal! I support this club because of the style of football they play. They play a beautiful position driven, possession oriented passing game similar to that of Guardiola's teams and Barcelona with their own twist on it. They are able to interchange positions, play on the counter, and still be fluid and entertaining. This is what is right about the game. When eleven men are able to work cooperatively to win a football match as opposed to relying on the talent of their star players (although recently, it's at least been made out to be, that without Ozil and Sanchez, we wouldn't be where we are at; I refuse to believe that). The Invincibles capture my heart and I've stood by the Gunners through thick and thin. I'm a supporter for life. #umaxitgiveaway3
They were never short of ideas. They always knew how to outwit the opponent with skill, pace and movement.
Man how I loved this team. It shows how far this club had fallen

Steven Gerrard's mistake against Chelsea just like Minchael Ballack's mistake in 2000 which both of them costed their clubs best chance to clinch the title
