Nagelsmann wasn't their first choice. They wanted Tuchel, but he wasn't available. When Tuchel became available, they sacked Nagelsmann ASAP so no other club would employ Tuchel.
dude this is one of the best tactical analysis i have seen on youtube. I was always a great fan of how the goals of nagelsmanns teams came to be, always combining through the middle instead of thomas tuchel ball just crossing in and praying, you can see how the style of play was perfectly fitted for bayern munichs players, with fast pace players on the flanks making the game wide and passing the ball to technically strong players like musiala who could maneuver in tight spaces and had always options to execute a pass to a lethal striker like lewandowski or executing a pass for a deep run of bayerns fast pace wingers and wing backs and the defensiv rotation was perfect like during the psg game, i just remember how i watched the game and thought, this is football at the highest level.
Great video! I can only recommend you to get to know about Fabian Hürzeler (he might be the next big thing). Currently coaching FC St. Pauli in Bundesliga 2 and being the youngest coach at 30 years of age in Germany’s top leagues. Since being coach Hürzeler has an insane record of only 3 Losses in about 80 Games. His tactics are quite impressive and he will surely be coaching in the Bundesliga next season whether its with St. Pauli, which sit in First atm, or another club, likely Bayer Leverkusen as they play quite similar and also similar to Brighton. The idea of the Nagelsmann football is in my opinion very interesting! Though I think that he lacked to implement his players to be active at all times. It is a reoccurring thing at Bayern that in big games players tend to be passive. That happened in the game against Leverkusen at the weekend as well as the early exit in the CL against Villareal. Pro footballers know how to play football!! Thats a fact!! And being too complicated with tactics can be hindering for the players. But exactly that is the pojnt - „playing“ should be the focus. Leverkusen of course are not the type of team that are only doing stepovers, elasticos etc. but moving freely into dangerous regions. Adapting to the opponent with the knowledge how the opposing team is going to play (Alonso had a very good idea of how Bayern would play - man to man pressing). I think this is the main flaw in his game that he couldn‘t create an overall structure that allowed his players to adapt using their intuition. I am myself a Bayern supporter since the arrival of Ribery (GOAT!😉) and it hurts my soul to see them struggle so bad at this moment - in my opinion it is a big problem that Bayern HAS to win the league every year otherwise there will be a crisis. And the fear of said crisis lead to irrational ideas - to sack Nagelsmann. Seeing Tuchel coach the team in that way with uninteresting football is just sad to watch because the players that are at hand have the potential to be world class but they have to be utilised correctly! A 4-2-3-1 with Dier as the holding six, Kimmich as a number eight, Musiala at the 10 and wingers in the half spaces would be awesome in my opinion… !

@@davidlean1060 Not quite. It was obvious that the way he wanted his teams to play worked to a certain degree. Last season in the first part of the season Bayern were on a roll. But when it got difficult against stronger opponents or sitautions when the demands on a player was higher his team failed. They failed because of inactivity... breaking a low block against Villareal or a must win game against Kiel in the DFB-Pokal were high stake games but the players stopped doing what is necessary to break a low block against named teams. E.g. runs behind the defensive line or direct chipballs in behind... they just stopped doing that! And that is a different type of social interaction than convincing the players his way of playing football was good. It is reassuring the players of their abilities!
That still suggests some sort of breakdown in communication, perhaps. That said, I wonder if their current form is proof that there's something wrong with the team itself and not Nagelsmann. Xabi Alonso's team are giving Bayern a problem they have grown too complacent to answer. @@janisschmid3880
I would love to see him at Barca , his space creating principles are similar to that of Marcelo bielsas and I think it would fit Barca’s philosophy. It’s a bit different from Barca’s system but it might be the fresh perspective that the club needs.

You need to check out Joseph Zinnbauers Raja Casablanca. That 4-3-3 he is using is sometimes a 5-2-4, sometimes a 5-4-1, then a 2-3-5. Wingers sometimes play central, sometimes they are in the back line. And all this chaos works, they are undefeated while not having a striker!😮

Naglesmann would be absolutely perfect for Barcelona; he’s proven time and time again that he can adapt tactically to any opponent and that he doesn’t need a huge budget to get his team playing beautiful football and while getting results. I really hope the Barcelona board are visionary enough to see his brilliance. I’m not a huge fan of the Flick links, because while I respect his incredible achievements he’s only ever managed Bayern at club level and had absolutely everything he needed so didn’t have to do much adapting (although he deserves credit for putting those players in the right system to succeed)
I think Liverpool may have just found their Klopp replacement. And for me, I just found another person that's mirroring what I want in football philosophy, too bad I don't get to watch a lot of Bundesliga.
A sad reality of Bayern is that the players have A LOT of power and Pep was probably the last coach most players respected. They fought with Ancelotti, they helped get Nagelsmann sacked and now they're fighting with Tuchel. Tuchel even said that he also had to simplify his tactics for the Bayern players. There's rumors the Bayern board will stick with Tuchel, despite results, to get the players with overblown egos out. I'm all for it.
Thanks for this analysis, very insightful and easy to follow, even for a layman like myself. As a German I was first sceptical when they appointed Nagelsmann for our national team, but after the radical, brave and needed changes he did in the last months I am now more optimistic that we will survive the group round - which I and many of my fellow countrymen were not sure before. During the period of the recent friendlies against France and Holland he gave some very interesting DFB press conferences to state that he actually - as you said - is happy to experiment and willing to give younger, less (internationally) experienced players like Stuttgart's Deniz Undav or Chris Führich a chance while all the traditionallists say that they cannot play at the UEFA Euro 24 since they have not played CL or EL before. He said that he got the chance at 28 to become head coach of a Bundesliga club as you mentioned, which some also considered crazy at that time and he want to pass this on. He is very self aware and reflective and knows the football business well. Although he gives the DFB a good fresh perspective (like Klinsmann did 2004-06) I think he sees himself more like a club coach, as he stated that he cannot work on longer or complex stuff with the national team when they only meet for a couple of days or weeks a year. I think it would be good for Germany if he stayed until the Fifa WC 2026, but if Barca or some other high caliber club reaches out he might go there. And then we have to wait for Klopp to finish his sabatical to take of the German team which every football fan here is waiting for 🙂

Yes, Xavi never changes his system no matter what, it's always the same thing and by doing that he always hopes to find a different outcome everytime which is really stupid. I still can't believe that Kahn and Salihamidzic sacked a genius like Nagelsmann and appointed a mid team coach like Tuchel. For the first time in my life, I see a Bayern playing like Mainz, Dortmund or Chelsea. Think of a Bayern team that has almost no desire to take the ball back from the opponent, doesn't press high with many men in front, meets the opponent in the middle block (sometimes even deep) and chases bloody transitions, concedes double-digit shots even from the weakest opponents... In my opinion, this is a much bigger shame than losing to Dortmund or losing the Bundesliga title to Leverkusen. Tuchel absolutely disgraced Bayern.
As a basketball ball, the idea of waiting for a trigger play to initiate trap is so key towards a double-team trap. I love using this concept to coach teenagers, especially when you know you are going to play teams that might be more skilled and more athletic than you. Waiting to soak up pressure is the worst thing to do with a team that is less skilled than your opponents; you have to absorb and stand your ground high (and away from the basket) in order to find positivity on defense.
Was having a discussion recently about who should replace Southgate as England manager. I’d be fascinated to see what Nagelsman would do with Bellingham, Saka, and Foden. It’s unlikely it would happen as I’d assume he’d want a return to club management, but we can dream!
Elite/world class managers don't usually coach internationally in the middle of their career, and in the past we've hired managers that should've been much better than Southgate on paper, yet they achieved abysmal results. Whomever succeeds Southgate needs to continue the strong team culture that's been built (not sure if Nagelsmann is that guy), or England will go nowhere

I think the big problem was, that the players when let of the leash, could yes fully utilize their talent and make plays, but they seemed to be less and less aware of their responsibilities. You mentioned the "optional" width, which sadly no one seemed to feel responsible to establish. At most times I'd say one side should establish width, but it seemed like only Coman and Davies were ever naturally doing so frequently enough. At the same time both Kimmich and Goretzka were pushing up consistently, leaving the defensive midfield unoccupied and crowding the center even further. This is why they struggled so much against low blocks. As long as you could hold the center Bayern seemed to have no real way of breaking you down. This was obviously made even worse by the lack of a center forward who could consistently convert off of crosses. Meanwhile if you lost the ball the center was open for a counter attack way too often.
It'll be interesting too see what he'll do with the german national team in the euros, for me as liverpool fan even if we don't get alonso in the summer i would go for nagelsmann as another option if everything goes well for him in the euros but if not i dont know who else will be the right man for the Liverpool job

When i watch this video, can’t help but to think Bayern sacking Nagelsman they really took us from Pep v Nagelsman last season and Nagelsman v Alonso this season. What a loss as a football fans. I am praying to god he comes back to bayern. Before his dismissal he was playing good football, conceded only 2 goals throughout the CL run, but Kahn wanted tuchel to screw up the team so the sacking happened. First, Barcelona. I think Barcelona is the team for him but they are in financial crisis to get another manager at the moment. Again Xavi could stay. I think Barcelona because it is a club which is used to a lot of possession of the ball. Secondly, Liverpool. Similar to Barca's possession of the ball but Liverpool use a lot of counter attack which Nagelsmann does too. And he is always ready to try other crazy tactics too. Third, Bayern. He could go back there because by now they realize a manager is not their problem. Their problem is just time. Mismanagement & lack of vision has caught up with them like Man Utd, Chelsea, Juve, Milan, Ajax & so on. So taking Nagelsmann back is a good thing for them because for me he is way better than Tuchel.
Players that played the best under nagglemsann at bayern were the ones who could play multiple positions and adapt to whatever tactic was needed at that moment

The relative width is a lead line of the DFB. Hansi Flick worked a lot of principles out as he was earlier in the DFB. One of them was the relative width. Its not a Nagelsman thing. The DFB says as deep as possible and wide as necasaary.

It's just so devastating that Barca is considering Hansi Flick over Nagelsmann. Flick had 1 or 2 good years with Bayern and everyone thinks he's one of the goats or something. He's basically a slightly better version of Xavi (same philosophy). With Flick, Barca will never fix the problems that Xavi is having right now, i.e. poor rest defence structure, too direct, continuous injuries, players don't know what to do on the pitch, etc. The were reports that the technical team in Barca prefers Nagelsmann, but Laporta likes Flick, goes to show how bad of a president Laporta is, meddling with the technical side of the team. We need Nagelsmann and a better president, to take this team to the next level, to conquer europe once again.
Real Madrid would be his dream job. When Carlo was linked to Brazil, Julian rejected psg, Chelsea, united waiting for this job. However Carlo ended up winning UCL and league earning an extra year in his contract.
I think that last part was because he maybe has lost the dressing room. Players are disagreeing with his tactics maybe. He is one of the youngest coach in top5 league.

Naglesmann would be absolutely perfect for Barcelona; he’s proven time and time again that he can adapt tactically to any opponent and that he doesn’t need a huge budget to get his team playing beautiful football and while getting results. I really hope the Barcelona board are visionary enough to see his brilliance. I’m not a huge fan of the Flick links, because while I respect his incredible achievements he’s only ever managed Bayern at club level and had absolutely everything he needed so didn’t have to do much adapting (although he deserves credit for putting those players in the right system to succeed)
Actually he didn't have everything. He had no control over transfers and that was one of the reasons he left.

A sad reality of Bayern is that the players have A LOT of power and Pep was probably the last coach most players respected. They fought with Ancelotti, they helped get Nagelsmann sacked and now they're fighting with Tuchel. Tuchel even said that he also had to simplify his tactics for the Bayern players. There's rumors the Bayern board will stick with Tuchel, despite results, to get the players with overblown egos out. I'm all for it.
That's why they were nicknamed Fc Hollywood in the 80s and 90s.

Thanks for this analysis, very insightful and easy to follow, even for a layman like myself. As a German I was first sceptical when they appointed Nagelsmann for our national team, but after the radical, brave and needed changes he did in the last months I am now more optimistic that we will survive the group round - which I and many of my fellow countrymen were not sure before. During the period of the recent friendlies against France and Holland he gave some very interesting DFB press conferences to state that he actually - as you said - is happy to experiment and willing to give younger, less (internationally) experienced players like Stuttgart's Deniz Undav or Chris Führich a chance while all the traditionallists say that they cannot play at the UEFA Euro 24 since they have not played CL or EL before. He said that he got the chance at 28 to become head coach of a Bundesliga club as you mentioned, which some also considered crazy at that time and he want to pass this on. He is very self aware and reflective and knows the football business well. Although he gives the DFB a good fresh perspective (like Klinsmann did 2004-06) I think he sees himself more like a club coach, as he stated that he cannot work on longer or complex stuff with the national team when they only meet for a couple of days or weeks a year. I think it would be good for Germany if he stayed until the Fifa WC 2026, but if Barca or some other high caliber club reaches out he might go there. And then we have to wait for Klopp to finish his sabatical to take of the German team which every football fan here is waiting for 🙂
I hope I see him in Milan because our club lacked this tactical complexity for years now

Yes, Xavi never changes his system no matter what, it's always the same thing and by doing that he always hopes to find a different outcome everytime which is really stupid. I was highkey sad when he announced he was leaving at the Ed of the season coz I really wanted to see him succeed at barca, but then again him not being flexible and adaptable was passing me off

Nagelsman and Tuchel are the German Mourinho. They might be less vocal as Jose but these two are very tactical genius and very effective in transitions

I still can't believe that Kahn and Salihamidzic sacked a genius like Nagelsmann and appointed a mid team coach like Tuchel. For the first time in my life, I see a Bayern playing like Mainz, Dortmund or Chelsea. Think of a Bayern team that has almost no desire to take the ball back from the opponent, doesn't press high with many men in front, meets the opponent in the middle block (sometimes even deep) and chases bloody transitions, concedes double-digit shots even from the weakest opponents... In my opinion, this is a much bigger shame than losing to Dortmund or losing the Bundesliga title to Leverkusen. Tuchel absolutely disgraced Bayern.

As a basketball ball, the idea of waiting for a trigger play to initiate trap is so key towards a double-team trap. I love using this concept to coach teenagers, especially when you know you are going to play teams that might be more skilled and more athletic than you. Waiting to soak up pressure is the worst thing to do with a team that is less skilled than your opponents; you have to absorb and stand your ground high (and away from the basket) in order to find positivity on defense.

Was having a discussion recently about who should replace Southgate as England manager. I’d be fascinated to see what Nagelsman would do with Bellingham, Saka, and Foden. It’s unlikely it would happen as I’d assume he’d want a return to club management, but we can dream!
Elite/world class managers don't usually coach internationally in the middle of their career, and in the past we've hired managers that should've been much better than Southgate on paper, yet they achieved abysmal results. Whomever succeeds Southgate needs to continue the strong team culture that's been built (not sure if Nagelsmann is that guy), or England will go nowhere

I think the big problem was, that the players when let of the leash, could yes fully utilize their talent and make plays, but they seemed to be less and less aware of their responsibilities. You mentioned the "optional" width, which sadly no one seemed to feel responsible to establish. At most times I'd say one side should establish width, but it seemed like only Coman and Davies were ever naturally doing so frequently enough. At the same time both Kimmich and Goretzka were pushing up consistently, leaving the defensive midfield unoccupied and crowding the center even further. This is why they struggled so much against low blocks. As long as you could hold the center Bayern seemed to have no real way of breaking you down. This was obviously made even worse by the lack of a center forward who could consistently convert off of crosses. Meanwhile if you lost the ball the center was open for a counter attack way too often.
He is an amazing tactician and emotional coach I like him and loved his tenure at bayern happy coaches the national team now

When i watch this video, can’t help but to think Bayern sacking Nagelsman they really took us from Pep v Nagelsman last season and Nagelsman v Alonso this season. What a loss as a football fans.

I am praying to god he comes back to bayern. Before his dismissal he was playing good football, conceded only 2 goals throughout the CL run, but Kahn wanted tuchel to screw up the team so the sacking happened. Anyway, i know he isnt on the best of relations with bayern, i hope that will change, and he comes back to win a CL, or more for Bayern ❤
Edit: Tuchel was announced to leave at the end of the season, i see Bayern is reluctant to make the same mistake to sack a coach in the middle of the season, although tuchel shouldnt stay any longer, you know, damage limitation 😅😅

First, Barcelona. I think Barcelona is the team for him but they are in financial crisis to get another manager at the moment. Again Xavi could stay. I think Barcelona because it is a club which is used to a lot of possession of the ball.
Secondly, Liverpool. Similar to Barca's possession of the ball but Liverpool use a lot of counter attack which Nagelsmann does too. And he is always ready to try other crazy tactics too.
Third, Bayern. He could go back there because by now they realize a manager is not their problem. Their problem is just time. Mismanagement & lack of vision has caught up with them like Man Utd, Chelsea, Juve, Milan, Ajax & so on. So taking Nagelsmann back is a good thing for them because for me he is way better than Tuchel.

The relative width is a lead line of the DFB. Hansi Flick worked a lot of principles out as he was earlier in the DFB. One of them was the relative width. Its not a Nagelsman thing. The DFB says as deep as possible and wide as necasaary.

Great video as always i have a question purist.I have seen ur posts on twitter wanting managers like pep to allow players the ability to problem solve on their own and loosen the rigid structures.My question is if it goes wrong,the same way it did for nagelsmann,is Pep then liable for that because the players dont get sacked but it is the manager.I remember Torrent(Peps assistant at bayern) saying players did not follow Pep's instructions when they lost 4-0 to Real Madrid in 2014.When such situitions occur is the manager liable?
this video made me understand alot of his disicions at bayern but his approach altho gave gengen pressing and possession his lack of wingplay meant that when facing a deep block his central combinations were useless esspecially with the lack of width to stretch the back line,also no wide players meant no crosses which is the reason why he failed to beat deep blocks, he's overall a good manager but i dont think he was ready to be the manager of a club of bayerns size due to his lack of experience
It's just so devastating that Barca is considering Hansi Flick over Nagelsmann. Flick had 1 or 2 good years with Bayern and everyone thinks he's one of the goats or something. He's basically a slightly better version of Xavi (same philosophy). With Flick, Barca will never fix the problems that Xavi is having right now, i.e. poor rest defence structure, too direct, continuous injuries, players don't know what to do on the pitch, etc.
The were reports that the technical team in Barca prefers Nagelsmann, but Laporta likes Flick, goes to show how bad of a president Laporta is, meddling with the technical side of the team. We need Nagelsmann and a better president, to take this team to the next level, to conquer europe once again.
