The student singer is absolutely superb! Just the right amount of expression and beautiful control with the vibrato. Such an inspiring video, only heard of Thomas Quasthoff anout 10 minutes and now i'm hooked!
First of all, I have never watched a video where Thomas didn’t interrupt the student mid song. Secondly, this singer’s legato in the German piece is astounding! German is so syllabic it takes true mastery to make it sound like one line. Bravo!
It's always good and comforting to look back and remember great Beauty and sincerity and Truth. As a professional clarinettist of many decades, the voice comes through clarinet in the right hands.
I do not know too much of singing, but I am a germanist who works with language all day long. And even I need to admit that I had never thought what you can get out of words. That is a miracle 😊
Wua, master Thomas You are a wonderful teacher. The way you tell this very promising young tenor to take profit with the vowels , you know few singers and more also very few teachers are able to teach like you, Bravo. ! This young tenor has a marvelous legato !
A wonderful performance. His breath control and purity of tone reminds me of Gigli, I have tried this song as a bariotone and it is extremely demanding, The slow pace and sustained pitches requires intense concentration and no mistakes. Seil Kim has gone on to start a successful career,
Thanks for this video, I could only imagine what it would be like to be in Thomas Quasthoff's studio. And the tip about adding the consonant before the beat is so true, especially in German. My Chorale professor is constantly reminding us of that, so It was nice to hear it from yet another voice.
wONDERFUL VOICE IN THIS MIRACLE OF SCHUbert lied . Schubert must have written his lied with the idea that any vocal range would be able to accomplish their needs but musically the gorgeous open sound and calmness of Kim is transcedent !
Thanks for your comment. In all the classes of Thomas Quasthoff that I attended I never saw him being unkind to a pupil. Tough certainly, but I doubt that he would destroy anyone's confidence or be unkind for the sake of it. Most people were truly inspired by him.
seriously though, very comfortable to listen to, good musical feeling. very good pronunciation for an asian, from my experience that is not always the case. I hope he continues, he is a super great tenor!! :-)!
You might be interested to know that we have just released another Thomas Quasthoff masterclass - this time he is concentrating on Schubert Lieder. Visit the Masterclass Media Foundation's webiste to find out more.
interesting to watch. the idea of teaching itself somehow is interesting ... it can be painful, and yet you get something from it. i like quasthoff's comments about the belauschen, and that the singer should not to a crescendo there.
Wonderful. a couple of suggestions. 1. The timber of the sound should be a bit more rounder with less pointed placement because of the poem. 2. Should have more ANTICIPATION in important words long before actual beat and need more in important voiced consonants such as L, M, N, V and Z. 3. open "i" is different from closed "e" such as "mit", "sinkest" are open "i" and "kehret" is closed "e". lastly remember when two words become one, the accent on the second word shift to the first word such as in Mondlicht instead of Mond Licht.
@maxpertile It's part of the way of getting into the head resonances. I personally don't have the impression of too much nasality. Better a bit of nose than none at all (like Jonas Kaufmann, for example...). But, yes, the nose should not be heard isolated. This tenor, however, is on a very, very good way. Imagine, it's not his mothertongue. So he has my full understanding that some diction is not perfectly natural. Imagine myself singing Korean - no way. A. from Uri, Switzerland.
Saluti.
Great tenor performance ftom Seil Kim but for me nobody matches baritone Gerard Souzay -his version touched the soul -simply matchless diction and phrasing .
@amillia007 You should try famouse tenor Agim Hushi at Vienna Conservatorium, considered as the best master of the voice today. Open your mind and found out about my information. Teaching singing is not only experience but mainly expertise. Good luck.
@maxpertile Ich gebe Ihnen so recht!

The "student" has such a wonderful vibrato! It's so controlled and smooth! great tone too, as well as pronunciation!
The student singer is absolutely superb! Just the right amount of expression and beautiful control with the vibrato. Such an inspiring video, only heard of Thomas Quasthoff anout 10 minutes and now i'm hooked!
Of all the miraculous Schubert songs, this is the most beautiful in my book.
Totally agree. I can’t hold in my emotions when I hear this song. 🎵 😢
First of all, I have never watched a video where Thomas didn’t interrupt the student mid song. Secondly, this singer’s legato in the German piece is astounding! German is so syllabic it takes true mastery to make it sound like one line. Bravo!
A young Nicolai Gedda unsurpassed too
The student singing in this is very good. His control is excellent.
He's seil kim korean best tenor!!
It's always good and comforting to look back and remember great Beauty and sincerity and Truth. As a professional clarinettist of many decades, the voice comes through clarinet in the right hands.
I am sorry to be overly sentimental but Maestro Q is truly an inspiration on so many levels.
The Tenor's name is Seil Kim. He comes from Soputh Korea.
I do not know too much of singing, but I am a germanist who works with language all day long. And even I need to admit that I had never thought what you can get out of words. That is a miracle 😊
Again Thomas, you did it so good and with so much respect for the young talent. Bravo, bravo, what a miracle you are 😊❤️🙏
Among the best verions I have heard. Good tempo, good phrasing and very acceptable German diction. Ausgezeitnet!
Phenomenal. It is so amazing... So beautiful. To see these beings exist, and create such beauty... so beautiful. Thank you.
Wua, master Thomas You are a wonderful teacher.
The way you tell this very promising young tenor to take profit with the vowels , you know few singers and more also very few teachers are able to teach like you,
Bravo. !
This young tenor has a marvelous legato !
What a lovely tenor voice! I was enchanted!
A wonderful performance. His breath control and purity of tone reminds me of Gigli, I have tried this song as a bariotone and it is extremely demanding, The slow pace and sustained pitches requires intense concentration and no mistakes. Seil Kim has gone on to start a successful career,

Quasthoff is a prince. I'm going to hear him sing Schubert next week.
Thank you for sharing. Anticipating consonants, an important element in singing Lieder and English as well...
What a master. And what a great guy!
He is a tenor. The song he is singing is Schubert's "Nacht und Traume" (Night and Dreams)
The Tenor is indeed rather marvellous allready.
I very much like quasthoff teaching style.
I love Quastoff and this tenor has a beautiful voice. I have found another video of him singing
Seil Kim Tenor Lensky Aria "Kuda Kuda" very nice.
wONDERFUL VOICE IN THIS MIRACLE OF SCHUbert lied . Schubert must have written his lied with the idea that any vocal range would be able to accomplish their needs but musically the gorgeous open sound and calmness of Kim is transcedent !
Both the student and the teacher are really superb! I'd do anything to have at least a 5 minute class with Quasthoff. *.*
i sang the brahms requiem with quasthoff at verbier this summer - he's such a gentleman and a true artist...
Fascinating, and a beautiful performance too. Look at Quasthoff's expressive face go!
Thanks for your comment. In all the classes of Thomas Quasthoff that I attended I never saw him being unkind to a pupil. Tough certainly, but I doubt that he would destroy anyone's confidence or be unkind for the sake of it. Most people were truly inspired by him.
Wow! What a teacher.
"That was beautiful. I'm unemployed!" That's hilarious!
Master teacher.
Master student who will be a master teacher himself one day.
seriously though, very comfortable to listen to, good musical feeling. very good pronunciation for an asian, from my experience that is not always the case. I hope he continues, he is a super great tenor!! :-)!
Beautiful voice!
my goodness...this is exquisite.
Wow, that's absolutely beautiful!
Thanks for posting this video! That's wonderful teaching.
Un moment de pur plaisir !
oh my....this is fabulous!
The first tenor has a very light, smooth sound. I could easily see him singing something Baroque, like Haydn or Montiverdi.
Mr. Quasthoff is really good. I totally agree on his early consonants and on his tempo rubato. :-)
Very good voice and a great master.
it was a pleasure to listen!
thank you for posting!
His voice is very beutiful, and his phrase is wonderful.
beautifully sang
really beautiful
Absolutely brilliant, and adds to our understanding of the great genius, Schubert.
Que hermosa conjuncion Dos voces bellisimas
Quastoff super!!!❤❤❤
@zooophfilm He is indeed fantastic. His name is Seil Kim.

That was a very deep "AND" at 4:31 :D...A good and wise teache.
Lovely ah vowels!
Sweet tenor voice. I wonder how he sings after 1/2 year.
man i'd be scared shitless! lol
great comparison!
'Belauschen, it's what the Stasi did'
I think I love Quasthoff a tiny bit more now. Didn't think that was possible.
interesting to watch. the idea of teaching itself somehow is interesting ... it can be painful, and yet you get something from it.
i like quasthoff's comments about the belauschen, and that the singer should not to a crescendo there.
I want to work with him!Does anybody know how to get a contact with him for masterclass or private lesson?Thank you
“I’m unemployed!” 😂😂
Oh, he reminds me of my singingteacher
@Deadmoon194 He was saying the student is a tenor, not Quasthoff.
Seil Kim. it says that at the start!
Incredably beautiful. Do anyone know the name of this tenor? This is good singing. Sounds so much better than alot of opera singers!
Seil kim !
He's a lovely singer--he's just not overdoing it :p
Wonderful. a couple of suggestions. 1. The timber of the sound should be a bit more rounder with less pointed placement because of the poem. 2. Found it! makes my previous message a bit useless. So it's "Nacht und Träume", D.827 (Op.43 No.2).
Tchouss
yeah seil kim, i know i know!

@MMFmasterclass He's a bass-bariton, not a tenor.
What a great masterclass --that's a really good tip about the 'n' coming early. Ah to be a tenor... :p Oh well.
@MMFmasterclass I thought he was a bass-baritone?
he could be a nice lieder tenor, i dont like him very much singing opera

whoo, strong opinions, brotha. why do you say that?
wow the pianist is hot
@SirGlennGould
Agreed. His voice is very light, and it doesn't seem very powerful.
I prefer a more dramatic and slightly darker sound.
Great tenor performance ftom Seil Kim but for me nobody matches baritone Gerard Souzay -his version touched the soul -simply matchless diction and phrasing .

The Stasi is belausching people" hahahaha

Well he's an amazing teacher - and this singer is amazing as well. But his body is somewhat shocking...

is it normal for that type of tenor voice to toss his larynx upwards? It produces a soft but uninteresting sound I think.
The pianist is atrocious … Souzay could give them all a lesson in the art .
Souzay was indeed a fine pianist...
ROFL!!!!!
he has good pronunciation for a chipanese
Schrecklich !
