    First of all, I have never watched a video where Thomas didn’t interrupt the student mid song. Secondly, this singer’s legato in the German piece is astounding! German is so syllabic it takes true mastery to make it sound like one line. Bravo!

    A wonderful performance. His breath control and purity of tone reminds me of Gigli, I have tried this song as a bariotone and it is extremely demanding, The slow pace and sustained pitches requires intense concentration and no mistakes. Seil Kim has gone on to start a successful career,

    Thanks for this video, I could only imagine what it would be like to be in Thomas Quasthoff's studio. And the tip about adding the consonant before the beat is so true, especially in German. My Chorale professor is constantly reminding us of that, so It was nice to hear it from yet another voice.

    wONDERFUL VOICE IN THIS MIRACLE OF SCHUbert lied . Schubert must have written his lied with the idea that any vocal range would be able to accomplish their needs but musically the gorgeous open sound and calmness of Kim is transcedent !

    Wonderful. a couple of suggestions. 1. The timber of the sound should be a bit more rounder with less pointed placement because of the poem. 2. Should have more ANTICIPATION in important words long before actual beat and need more in important voiced consonants such as L, M, N, V and Z. 3. open "i" is different from closed "e" such as "mit", "sinkest" are open "i" and "kehret" is closed "e". lastly remember when two words become one, the accent on the second word shift to the first word such as in Mondlicht instead of Mond Licht.

    @maxpertile It's part of the way of getting into the head resonances. I personally don't have the impression of too much nasality. Better a bit of nose than none at all (like Jonas Kaufmann, for example...). But, yes, the nose should not be heard isolated. This tenor, however, is on a very, very good way. Imagine, it's not his mothertongue. So he has my full understanding that some diction is not perfectly natural. Imagine myself singing Korean - no way. A. from Uri, Switzerland.

  • @ONeirda
    @ONeirda 13 років тому

    @maxpertile Penso che una "voce tagliando come una spada" non sarebbe lo stile che sia adeguato a questo Lied... Poi, l'assunto che il vecchio belcanto sfortunatamente sia estinto e perduto per sempre, io non lo assecondo. C'erano bravissime cantante e bravissimi cantanti a Vienna attraverso le 1905, bravissimi anche a la Metropolitan attraverso le 1910, e ci sono anche bravissime cantante e bravissimi cantanti oggi, comparabile all' altissimo livello. Il "belcanto morto" - per me è un mito.

    Sono molto d'accordo con Lei che il signor Kaufmann non canta di maniera sana. Per il mio gusto, mancha appunto quello che Lei probabilmente (ed anche io) stimo nelle voci di Gigli, Kraus, Martinelli, Björling, e Lauri Volpi: il flusso libero dello squillo, il clangore colorato e frescho. Sono cresciuto ascoltando a registrazioni di Gigli mille volte. Ho quasi assorbito la sua voce in tutte le sue faccette. Oggi, adoro anche Gedda e Kraus. E poi naturalmente anche Wunderlich.

    @maxpertile Con tutto rispetto che quello genere di teatro-musica che più tardi si chiamava "opera" fu iniziato in Firenze (Camerata de' Bardi) e fra pochi dicenni si diffondeva sopra quasi tutti i principati italiani, l'assunto che per natura "gli Italiani capiscono un' pò dell' arte di canto" non lo assecondo mai generalmente. In Italia, ho fatto l'esperienza di ottimi ed anche bruttissimi "maestri" di canto, come ho fatto l'esperienza di ottimi maestri in Austria, Germania, Stati Uniti.

    @maxpertile Ich gebe Ihnen so recht! Quasthoff aeusserte sich z.B. ueber Bocelli mit: "Davon bekomme ich Pickel"! Ich jedenfalls brauche keinen deutschen Lehrer und tue das lieber autodidaktisch. Gerne wuerde ich mir einen italienischen Lehrer wuenschen, da die auch in der Lage sind dramatische Stimmen auszubilden! Nichts aber gegen die deutsche Gesangstechnik insofern, da sie das probateste Mittel gegen "Schlafstoerungen" ist!
