Osamu, the man who invented limited animation, and almost definitely coined the term "anime" to describe exactly that.
Every time I remember the sci-fi channel anime week, I think to myself: we're just a vtuber rig or one giant video essay away from the Apollo Smile renaissance.
One thing's for sure--these ladies ain't no Royal Flush Gang.

Actually SEGA replaced Apollo Smile with Cherami Leigh in that Space Channel VR game that came out a few years ago since Apollo decided to retire and became a dance instructor somewhere else.
Becoming a dance instructor is very fitting lol. I kinda wanna attend just to be taught by the insperstion of Ulala.
Another neat tidbit about Obari and Transformers: he also worked as a designer on at least part 3 of the pilot episode while working at Ashi Productions. You can actually see which frames he worked on because Optimus has a much more bulky, exaggerated look.
There are plenty of shots in that episode that were clearly based on Obari's style, like at least half of it at minimum.
Not saying it was all his work, but there's a lot of visual inspiration.

Gotta love the Transformers roots. Obari says Optimus Prime's stock transformation footage was his first animation of his professional career, and our first taste of what was to come later from him.
You know I started watching KB for his Looney Tunes videos but now I watch all of his videos.
I don't watch absolutely everything he posts, but largely, same here. Just clicked with his presentation style.
Sure it helps that I (somehow) like watching videos about anime production history a lot more than I like watching anime.
I just find it fascinating learning about something someone is so invested in, I'd consider myself a moderate Anime lover, I'm more of a video game Otaku.@@WhitzWolf92

I very much remember that when this came out people were super excited. Then it came out and they watched it, and nobody cared anymore.
Same for Ninja Resurrection, although it ended so insane that i always wished it continued just to see where it went.

I can remember seeing ads for Wild Cardz in Animerica and thinking... nah. Good to know my childhood scepticism was warranted.
You know something is bad when a 2004 entry in the long running Kamen Rider franchise where each Rider is based on the card motif is better executed, and that season gave us the ultimate game of 52 Pickup by fighting monsters and capturing them when they get a taste of the Rider's iconic finishing moves, even the latest entry, Gotchard, is telling a good story with a full deck

Anyway, yeah, I vaguely remember watching this one back in the day, and just recall a fever dream of explosions and Stuff Happening. I kinda wish we had more BTS material on this one, just to try to figure out what the hell went so wrong.

It's cool, but man does it lose much of its luster when there is no substance to back it up.
I also agree. He harps way too much on story, plot points, engaging three dimensional characters and blah blah blah, but you don't need that EVERY time. As long as you go into this knowing that it's basically a collection of randomly animated cutscene-like nonsense then despite what he says it's actually entertaining for what it is.

Meh, the story and the dub may have it's issues, but as animation enthusiast, it looks visually good that it doesn't take away my enjoyment of the anime.
I agree. He harps way too much about "story and characters" as if we really always need that 100% of the time. But we don't. Maybe 90% of the time, perhaps, but sometimes can't we just be allowed to turn off our brains and watch something fun and goofy that makes no sense and just feels like a random selection of cutscenes ripped out of a TG-CD game or something? Kaiser here, can be a real elitist jerk sometimes.
Once more everyone is reminded that writing should not be a democracy, but a benevolent dictatorship.
This anime feels like '97 in a nutshell. Like if they made a whole show consisting of action-packed intros
How does one find out what individual animators were responsible for individual scenes?
People watch for story. Is possible to turn "friends" into the slideshow and people will still love them.
As a New Yorker, I cannot hate on this dub. And since you don't care about any of the other voices in this dub (Scott Cargle's also a CPM mainstay and voiced Red Lobster in this dub as well. What was he; chopped liver?), I will say two things about two of the voices:
1) The English voice of Casa Clubs was provided by comedienne, writer and impressionist, Nadya Ginsburg. Two years after this dub, Nadya would also be a cast mate on the ill-fated sketch comedy show on the WB, "Hype!". Since that show got canned, you could say she hasn't had the best luck until the later end the of the 2000's. However, she does have a UA-cam page. Please don't harass her about her role in this. I have to say this for the safety of many online denizens overall.
2) There's a rumor floating around that Jeremy Welch (who voiced the King in this OVA) was the late Maddie Blaustein under an alias.
And as for the anime itself? I consider this to be a Pilot OVA. As in, if the OVA was a success, they would've told more about the world and its cast in later episodes, had this become a series. But judging from the end results, that card is still floating around the void somewhere.
And finally, at least you were nice to the dubbed voices. In comparison, back in the old days of the internet; they would usually have the tired old joke of "they took someone off the street" to do the voice work. Which, if you know about New York and its acting communities in voice over and Broadway, is complete bullshit. It's just nobody thought anime would be as big as Pokemon at the time.
The Rayearth ova dub felt like a Disney/Broadway movie.
Have you ever watched or considered reviewing any adaptations of X or X/1999? I just watched the movie from movie from 1996 and it's kind of mind boggling how well animated it is for something i've never heard anyone talk about. Also being directed by Rintarou the storytelling is plenty weird by looks beautiful the whole time.
I actually have this anime. Who would've thought that 'Wild Cardz' had ties to 'Transformers'. Also, I met Apollo Smile at A convention years ago.

I got soo into Studio Ox chara & animation style after their Idol Project that i imported this JaJa Uma! Quartet OVA on VHS from Japan hehe....Sure its only for the animation and all related stuff i like it and the story is not important for me in this instance. I just wish the studio did more titles.

Look... I love English dubs. I am a defender of dubs. I have the utmost respect and admiration for the anime dubbing and localization industry. I even like this anime kinda, sorta, a little bit... it's a guilty pleasure. But even I have to say...... no this dub really does actually suck.

He does not like these types of comments because it neglects the amount of time, work, and effort put into the video. Wondered if he saw it since I saw a tweet of his a few days ago highlighting that frustration, and yep, he pointed it out as an example of it just now. You probably didn’t know, but it’s a heads up for the future.

I feel like this series has some interesting missing hidden potential. Maybe someone should redo this series but with a better story.
The story is fine as a launching point to a series where stuff is delved into more deeply. It's basically like complaining the first two episodes don't cover the narrative, character crafting and world building of a series.

True. A Sound Argument, yet even a solid Design from one fan or script from another can really help with making something good. It definitely takes individuals who have worked on similar projects before that can make those ideas work.
There have been Power Rangers fans who have become a Big part of the Writer’s room.
I will agree that structuring an Idea around an Already Existing Franchise is Easier. Making ideas or story concepts for an Something like “Wild Cards” needs a lot more time in the Oven!
Back when I first watched this, I think there are SOME interesting aspects to what happens in this anime. They're just way too vague, overly condensed and truncated to the point where they come off as nonsensical. Ultimately I do agree that the majority of this is just motion p-n with cool character design, and anything of substance chopped out of either the story and dialouge.... But I actually think that at least when reading between the lines of what's here, there are some interesting.... CONCEPTS being tossed about.
And I'll admit I havn't watched this, but I'm interested to see if you bring up the absolutely insultingly offensive English voice for the Chinese caricature villain. (Though it's not like the depiction as intended from the Japanese producers is much better). Also, I hope you at least bring up as a side note, the quick and brief history of the failed publicity-stunt-turned-voice-actress Apollo Smile and how this was one of her only few real roles in an English dub ever.

I hate how these American Anime distribution companies thought would sell to Americans in the 90s and early 2000s. They didn't give a damn about stories and characters. All they cared about was material that had lots of T&A and ridiculous action.
What was the point of Wild Cardz!?! Was it supposed to be a TV pilot that never got sold!?! And why, oh why, why in all holy Hans Mole Man dub is so god awful cringe worthy!?!
Seems like a bad choice to sigh and say "let's get this over with" at the beginning of a video. But maybe people just let videos play rather than make choices to stop watching if the person making a video indicates they think the subject is boring.
Me personally I dislike animation works that feel the need to alway move. One of my least favorite anime films is Dead Leaves it continues to move and ugly as sin too. I feel Wild Cards the same
