i stg i saw a long post on tumblr ab how divergent reduced ya dystopia to its bare minimum (some stupid categories so people identify and thus buy merch of it, barebones worldbuilding, very weak characters that basically have two personality traits) so when everyone tried to copy divergent + publishers being desperate for any ya dystopia at the time, it flooded the market with bad books and killed the genre 💀

I remember seeing a video essay about this. Divergent was a cash grab that just took the checklist of everything YA book series had, and then boiled it down to something terrible, pulling the whole genre down with it.
The most criminal aspect of this franchise is they got a little big for their britches and tried to cash in by splitting the third book into two movies but COULDNT FINANCE THE LAST FILM

1. The author wrote the entire first book over spring break and you can TELL.
2. Theres a whole thing about how they cant go over the wall, but amnity can go over the wall cuz that's where the farms are, so they drug them so they dont wander off.
3. Explain to me why a single person would choose to live in the Candor faction, where their only thing is not lying and therefore having no privacy.
4. How did they even discover that radiation has mutated dna so people have less character traits? Like whose thesis was that?

fun fact: in an author's note at the end of the book, the author says she wrote divergent because she imagined this world as what she would consider a utopia, then realized other people would consider it a dystopia, so she decided to write this dystopian YA novel
which explains why the dystopia feels so disjointed and hamfisted tbh
I feel like I read somewhere that she also wrote it during a two week vacation she had in university. I really can’t tell if that’s impressive or another reason why the story lacks substance.

i know this video is almost a year old but im losing my MIND because me and my little 11 year old friends were such huge divergent stans, we all got together and had a party before we went to see this movie at like 8pm on a school night, we were all "in costume" which just meant that we were wearing colors coded to the ~factions~ we wouldve been in and all my friends thought i was a coward for wanting to be in the one that just farms. also there was a nearly friend group shattering fight once because one of the girls in the group said she would be divergent and dauntless and everyone got mad at her for just wanting to be like the main character so there was a huge fight at a sleepover about it. despite the massive impact that the divergent series had on my prepubescent mind and the number of times i looked up "divergent memes" on pinterest on my first generation kindle fire i had absolutely no recollection of any of this until i watched this video so thank you

The world building is actually done pretty well in the books. It's inspecific sometimes but that fits with the narrative, the whole point was the city was like the whole world in their minds

When I was 12 and obsessed with Divergent, I thought I could be Dauntless because it seemed fun or something, but now I know I'd just go with either Amity or Abnegation (because they're the same thing, let's be real) because they all seem like they're just vibing and being nice and I think I could do that pretty easily.

They’re contained in a wall as part of an experiment where they tried to create the perfect human by altering genes but it ended up losing other qualities, so they are waiting for all of the genes to like heal or something (go back to how they were) and the people who are ‘divergent’ basically just means they are normal people, so she’s literally like all the other girls

i was obsessed with divergent in middle school so i’m going to answer the questions even though no one asked and this video isn’t supposed to be taken seriously
1. it doesn’t really explain what’s outside the wall. i think that the rest of the world is post apocalyptic or something. the government is trying to control them by keeping them inside. the amity live outside the city where they farm, but i think it’s just dead grass past that. its revealed at the end of the second movie that the city is supposed to be an experiment to see if society can thrive the way theirs is run
2. basically erudite=scientists, amity=hippies who farm, candor=lawyers, dauntless=military, and abnegation=charity
3. there are divergent stans and a whole fandom. they also overlap with hunger games and harry potter. fandoms like that
4. in the book tris and her brother caleb are both 16 at the time of the test making caleb a few months older. this is not possible because women can’t birth kids a few months after one another. i think the author just doesn’t know how pregnancy works. in the movie caleb is 19 and tris is 16. maybe they wait until all their kids are 16 then they take the test together??
5. the brothers name is caleb prior
6. his name is four because he has four fears: heights, killing innocent people, claustrophobia, and his father. his instructor gave him the nickname when he joined dauntless. his real name is tobias eaton
7. four was abnegation born. he doesn’t like talking about it because his dad marcus eaton is an abnegation leader who abused four throughout his childhood, which is basically the opposite of what abnegation stands for. spoiler alert, four is also divergent
8. the factionless are basically homeless. they live on the streets
9. they play games to see who says in dauntless. i think it’s so they don’t have weak links in the faction. it’s basically military training
10. the abnegation weren’t allowed to wear makeup so either she was experimenting with it or the makeup crew put it on to make her look more edgy
11. tris is 16, four is 18, we’re just going to say the new recruits are also 16ish, and the instructor (asshole neck tat guy) is also 18

@@skyraven89 yeah, i was gonna say that, the outside world was destroyed during a war that happened because a way of modifing people's genetics to make them perfect was discovered, so eventually people were using it with bad purposes and altering their humanity. the purpose of the chicago experiment was to find someone who was 100% divergent (tris), which means they'd be 100% human because they'd have all the basic qualities which define humanity, and use them to restore human race (i hope this added to all the points they made above)

i read the books when i was a teen then last year at aged 24 i watched it with a friend who knew nothing of the story, we went through the entire film and at the end i suddenly turn to her and say 'omg they didnt even tell you why his names Four? he's only got four fears' and we scream cried laughing for a good 10 minutes
