Do you know of religious practises that are borrowed from other cultures today?

    • @qman1058
      @qman1058 2 роки тому +2

Yes, for example, the religious practice of reciting prayers or singing hymns is reminiscent of ancient customs of spells, incantations, and divination. Is the sanctification of "holy water" by a Catholic priest not similar to magic from ancient pagan cultures?

Something similar occurred (a process sometimes called 'syncretism' ) with some original culture's religions in the American continent (over all in Spanish colonies) when Catholicism was brought during the colonial period.

I’d like you to explain better what aspects of Roman catholic beliefs are borrowed, because I’ve heard very convincing arguments and evidence for it not being as widespread a thing as implied in the video yet I’m curious of what you know about the subject.

I think you mean the Eleusinian cult. There are a number of books on this subject. One I read was "Eleusis: Archetypal Image of Mother and Daughter" by Carl Kerenyi (1967). "Ancient Mystery Cults" (1987) and "Greek Religion" (1985) by Walter Burkert also discuss the Eleusinian Mysteries. Wikipedia has a very good entry on it. 🤔

Another thing is that early Roman religion was not animistic either as Jupiter was never seen as some nature spirit and neither was Mars or Minerva.Early Roman religion was a mix of polytheism and animism

When you open with "did you know that the Romans adopted their gods from the Greeks?" I instantly think that you are talking to a nine year old and lose interest.

A recent hypnotic investigation has thrown up the following intriguing hypothesis: that the high priest of Jupiter in Rome was not human! For an account, see the Hypno-Archaeologist by Philip Ditchfield.

Roman religion is absolutely NOT a rip of Greek religion because there are many Roman Gods that are not found in Greek religion

    • @Texasmade74

@joesdi Roman religion starting out was very different than Greek as they didn't use idols/effigies for one, and the religion was much more animistic than it was a few hundred years later for various reasons

This is where the Trinity derived from..I don't believe in the trinity because there is no trinity in the bible tbh. If you read the bible verse deuteronomy 6:4 "The Lord our God is one God." Mark 12:29 says "Hear O Isreal; The Lord our God is one God." Corinthians 8:6 "But to us there is but one God the father, of whom are all things, and we in him." Ephesians 4:5 "I therefore beseech you to keep the unity of the spirit one Lord, one faith, one baptism one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all, and in you all." And the most important verse is 1 john 5:7 "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit: and these three are one." This is abbreviation of the entire Christian beliefs. The one God is the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19 "God ye therefore, and teach all the nations, baptising them in the name the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." There is countless verses that prove my clame, this "trinity philosophy" didn't exist in the first church. This is one of many problems caused by the roman Catholic Church's philosophies to define Christian beliefs. The term "Trinity" originates from the time rome converted Christianity around 400 Ad they brought with them their pagan roman beliefs to Christianity. Just as they also brought with them their status as also they brought (Intercessions/mediation.) They also brought their pagan beliefs of (The Capitoline triad) Capitoline traid is a group of 3 ancient roman deities, combined in one. The three deities are: Jupiter, Mars, and Coerinos. This is where the "Trinity" derived from. The Catholic church also forced the Orthodox church, either by Crusades or by inciting Islamic invasion against it, to changed the original Shabbat of the bible and the (biblical calendar) to the "Roman Calendar." In the same way, the Catholic Church introduced the belief of "God's mother" ancient rome also used to worship mother goddess "Cybele." It was later adopted by the Catholic Church's. I really don't view the Catholic Church as Christians because they are not Christians at all because they broke one of many God 10 commandments.

Why no mention of more ancient "Indo European" connections? Gods like Jupiter and Mars and Goddesses like Vesta, among others, have evidence of being tied back to the earlier Proto Indo Europeans, who the Greeks, Romans, Celts, Germans, Persians and more split off from. It's a disservice to the audience to omit this key fact.

I really think if the priests of Roman cults had gotten their act together and each written individual 'bibles' their cults would've had more staying power. Christianity's main selling point was the whole one god thing, and lots of reading material.

Because the other dieties were already present in the original roman pantheon centuries before the Roman conquest of Greece (those were all pan mediterranean gods derived from the Indo-European mythology), Apollo was the exception and therefore when the Romans adopted his worship they didn't have a latin counterpart and sticked to the Greek name.

The Roman version of Apollo is Helios, who represents the Sun. Some of the Roman gods are also used for the days of the week in Latin and languages which derived from it like Spanish. Tuesday is Martes, from Mars, Wednesday Miercoles from Mercury, Thursday is Jueves from Jupiter, and Friday is Viernes from Venus.

@@davidguilbertrozenman5025 Helios was the sun, not really a 1:1 Roman version of Apollo this is backed by the fact that Romans worshiped the 2 gods separately.

They kept his name because the Romans keep consult the oracle of Delphi di Apollo , the holiest sanctuary of antiquity.
The other Greek gods they learned from the ancient Greek colonies in Italy ,the Magna Grecia.

Property tycoon Marcus Licinius Crassus once saved a Vestal Virgin he was involved with by the name of Licinia from being entombed alive - the punishment imposed on Vestals for unchastity - by successfully (and truthfully, Plutarch says) arguing that it was her villa he was pursuing!
