This! Yes it almost has some Mangini era style to it but Portnoy’s power and signature is ALL OVER it. It’s almost like an “evolved” dream theater song.
This is THE SHIT! Forget about the signature drumming, and let's acknowledge the vocal lines MP wrote together with James and JP...the harmonic structure of the chorus is insanely good.
That's what Dream Theater sound like, it's like they never lost a step in between Mike leaving & rejoining, the chemistry is obvious, amazing song from an amazing band, very impressive comeback, everyone sounds great, especially Mike.
I swear this band is far more melodic than people give them credit for. They go hard, but it seems like they really try to take you on melodic journeys than 'for the sake of brutality and all things heavy' like other greats focused on.
Songs like Learning to Live are the perfect example of that, honestly. It's writing for the sake of the music instead of writing for the sake of getting a reaction out of a crowd.
Prog metal and power/symphonic metal tend to be really good at telling stories and taking you on adventures, and DT definitely pulls from symphonic metal and are very prog
Portnoy really complete,s this band creatively..thats what's makes Dream Theater so awsome!!! It's like Portnoy never left!! Im excited hes back an sounds better than ever!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Glad you like the song too :) But yeah, that's not surprising, considering reddit is literally the anus of the internet. The amount of complainers and negative opinions on that website is beyond comprehension lol
I can understand not liking it, but some of the ways people justify their opinions are just dumb. Like, it's obvious the band put a lot of work and creativity into this.
These guys never stop ! Reinventing themselve for decades and always delivering a masterpiece. I'm in.......can wait for the entire album! Thx for the video!
I wouldn't say this song is exactly an example of them reinventing themselves to be honest. I was hoping for a little bit more innovation with regards to the drum parts. I guess this one was somewhat more interesting in that aspect compared to Night Terror. Will have to see what the rest of the album sounds like though. These two singles could prove to be the "weakest" songs of them all.
MP is front and centre on both tracks we have heard so far! Making a point of being BACK. I'm a guitarist...but this is drums and more drums and really taking up a lot of space in the song - all of it sounds decent so far - so cool to see this lineup back, almost the same one I saw in 91 in the UK!
Nice video! I like your channel a lot! IF I may... Please ask Mike about how is the creative process different between all the bands that he has done all these years before returning to DT? I mean, the dynamics and how he feels during the creating process. And thank him for all the music and moments! OMG! Also my most beloved respect and love for his sister, doggy, and family.
They’re not even coming to the part of town where I’m at after their European leg, so I might have to be heading over to Vegas to catch them when they get stateside. I am not going to miss this tour. That was outstanding Samus!!…

Refreshing like a hot sauna and a vigorous bike ride before sitting down to play some drums already! I'm glad there's still real musicianship in the world. And even through my laptop speakers I fully realize why cats like Portnoy and Copeland favor having a few Octobans on hi hat side; that throaty woody bark that hits me right in the heart.
i saw them live on nov 13th and they played this song in the second set as a preview from the new album...also with the video running in the background...it was epic also i've been to so many concerts but dream theater was the only one with no pre band and just 2 very long sets of awesomeness
I'd love to get his take on the resurgence of respect for classic prog, from King Crimson to (even though he talks about them incessantly) Rush, Yes and such? The variances of prog metal integration and growth? Etc. Love you 66Samus. ♥️
My boyfriend just told me yesterday he got tickets for me for xmas to the philly show Feb 7. I am absolutely going nutz! This album is going to be incredible!!!
You should ask Mike if he listened to the DT albums while he was gone and also for the Mangini songs on the set currently you should ask him what was his approach learning the songs and how did he make them his own live. Thanks man! This new song sounds amazing, can't wait for the album, been listening to DT for years.
This is basically what "The Alien" would have sounded like if MP were on drums. Simpler and catchier, with a real DT spice in the mix choices. Anyway I'm glad we have both.
Question for Portnoy: what is his favorite type of fart for percussion? Does he prefer a high pitched airy one for a crash or a low pitched one with a hum for a floor Tom?
Love Dream Theater. The guitar solo there sounded a lot like Nili Brosh. The track is Double Entendre. She does a session on EMGtv where you will hear that same groovy beat played. Another top song buy the great Dream Theater💪
Cool vidéo ! I like the song but Prefer the speed and the chorus of Night terror. My Question to MP : What did he think about the Astonishing ? Specially on the the drum, and is he interessted to play some songs live in his style ?
First, I would do the "We're not worthy" from Wayne's World. Then I'd ask him about making this visualizer, since I'm pretty sure it's depicting WWI and I'm very curious about the concept of this album. Last, if he still wanted to record longer, I'd ask about making this new album with Mike back, and how it went \,,/
Samus, if you like the Petrucci solo part look into Steve Morses work, this one is so insprired by Steves sound and paying homage to one of the great peers
Have you ever done a reaction Video to Alex Bent in Trivium? Songs like "What the Dead Men Say" or "Like a Sword over Damocles" ? BTW love this video and all your other videos. Keep making Great content. Subbed up. Much Love from Southern California!! ❤❤
Drums are "less complicated" than what Mangini would've done. IMO, Portnoys creativity maxed out a long time ago. Thats what was so good about Mangini. It was all new to us and to Mangini. Portnoy has be doing the same fills for ever.
You're right about it being less complicated, in a technical level Manguini is way ahead yes. but, the feel bro, the coherence the band has been showing just with 2 songs is in another level that Manguini, sandly, never was able to reach, and that's ok, these guys are teen age friends, nothing tops that for a band like this.
Question for Mike: How do you mic and mix your drums? Your drum presence on a record is noticeable(keeping in mind AV's 'Nightmare'), so what's your trick, touch, approach to engineering? Thanks Portnoy and Fartsexguy.
If I can somehow score an interview with Portnoy, what questions do you want me to ask him?
How is he so freaking cool
what is it like writing music for a modern audience when you're Dream Theater
How did he transition his love for the beatles into his more complex style?
Definitely his creative process, maybe drumeo experience learning songs
Why are the Octobans tuned so low during this 40th-anniversary tour?
Train of Thought meets The Alien! I love it!!!
This! Yes it almost has some Mangini era style to it but Portnoy’s power and signature is ALL OVER it. It’s almost like an “evolved” dream theater song.
I was thinking, The Great Debate on parts.
I think this is train of thought meets the alien with great debate and scenes from a memory elements here and there
MORE TOT VIBES PLEASE
The chemistry between Mike and John is off the charts. They enhance each other's playing/singing/creativity
exactly, those drums and guitar are just in perfect motion, always was with Petrucci and Portnoy, glad it is back :)
This is THE SHIT! Forget about the signature drumming, and let's acknowledge the vocal lines MP wrote together with James and JP...the harmonic structure of the chorus is insanely good.

They never lost a step.

I really liked this song, hope they keep this level for the whole album.
I am not a huge fan os DT but these 2 new songs are f*cking great.
7:22 hearing those triplets with the double kick made me melt dude. So cool! Mike & Samus’ drumming skills are life goals fr ❤
Portnoy really complete,s this band creatively..thats what's makes Dream Theater so awsome!!! It's like Portnoy never left!! Im excited hes back an sounds better than ever!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Holy fuck I'm impressed, the instrumental section might be the best one they have ever done. Takes me right back to metropolis pt1🔥
Yes! Too many of their instrumentals sound like they're just noodling around. This one sounds like they put real thought into it.
It's absurd how many people hate this song on the DT subreddit.
The song is great imo
Glad you like the song too :)
But yeah, that's not surprising, considering reddit is literally the anus of the internet.
The amount of complainers and negative opinions on that website is beyond comprehension lol
Yeah man i always see negativity in there and i hate when people can't think positively like why you so bahhee
Subreddits are usually full of upset losers who need an echo chamber to cry to
How? It sounds just like Dream Theater lol
I can understand not liking it, but some of the ways people justify their opinions are just dumb. Like, it's obvious the band put a lot of work and creativity into this.
So glad Portnoy came back!
I love mike portnoy as a drummer can't wait to hear the new album
These guys never stop ! Reinventing themselve for decades and always delivering a masterpiece. I'm in.......can wait for the entire album! Thx for the video!

I honestly wasn't that excited about the first video but this one is along the lines of what I was hoping for!
Agree! The first song just sounded like a bunch of old DT songs pasted together, in my opinion. This one, not so much.
Mangini is an incredible drummer but its so good to see Portnoy back, it wasn't DT without him.
Sick! Best fucking band on the planet IMO
Bring this man a beer!!!!
Same here, best band on the earth! 🔥🤘🎸
So crazy how underrated they are too
The new drummer is awesome!
The new old drummer
Mike Portnoy isn't "The new drummer" He literally wrote The Dance Of Eternity in 1999
@@depory really?
@LeandroOlavarria Yea, Mike Portnoy was from the begin of DT, in 2010 he left the band and in 2023 he just came back
@depory no hez new he just join
john is killing the guitar solo's on this album their so memorable
I didn't like the solo in this one
MP is front and centre on both tracks we have heard so far! Making a point of being BACK. I'm a guitarist...but this is drums and more drums and really taking up a lot of space in the song - all of it sounds decent so far - so cool to see this lineup back, almost the same one I saw in 91 in the UK!
Can't wait to see them play this one live... Massive classic potential
2:25 Yes you can: "odd time headbanging"
Nice video! I like your channel a lot!

Well... What I can say is that... THIS IS GOLD DAMN
Please ask him when they gonna play "the best of times" live 🙏🙏
The theater version of the stage. Both are kick ass.
They’re not even coming to the part of town where I’m at after their European leg, so I might have to be heading over to Vegas to catch them when they get stateside. I am not going to miss this tour. That was outstanding Samus!!…
Production on this album is insanely good, unbelievable clarity of every instrument, just perfectly mixed 🤯🤩
So good to hear Portnoy behind the drums again!
They’re not even coming to the part of town where I’m at after their European leg, so I might have to be heading over to Vegas to catch them when they get stateside. I am not going to miss this tour. That was outstanding Seamus.
...and there I was gearing up to suggest you try and get Mike for a interview. Greatness \m/
The beginning sounds like a warm up session exercise.
love watching this with you dude!! thanks for doing this one!
4:57 the transition here is truly brilliant
Honestly though, besides missing Portnoy's drum parts, I missed his background vocals too in the Mangini era.
Can't wait for a drumeo drummer interviews another drumeo drummer 🤘
Yeah, I’ve already listened to it three times and it just gets better each time!
Just tell him Ty for all the Awesome Music 🎶 and he’s forever a True Percussionist 🥁🤙🏻🔥🔥🔥🎶🔥🎶🔥🎶🔥🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🎙️❤️
What a great line: "You can't head-bang to Dream Theater"!! That's why they are always so fresh and innovative.
It’s a Fat Beat guitar sounds Fatt 🔥🔥🔥🔥🎸🥁🎸🥁🎸🥁🎸 Man reading minds awesome tightness of the band is just amazing. ❤
dt: this is a song about a man struggling to live after experiencing the horrors of war
also dt: check out this cool groovy beat! 6:24
Refreshing like a hot sauna and a vigorous bike ride before sitting down to play some drums already! I'm glad there's still real musicianship in the world. Such great song! It's everything that a Dream Theater fan wants!!!
Welcome back portnoy . Like the style of vocals and video showing flashbacks. Nice guitaring 🎸🎶👍🏻👏🏻
The first 2 minutes sounds like a song from Deliverance by Opeth
Opeth is now DT and vice versa
I cannot unhear this anymore
What about jinjer-i speak astronomy ?
That’s exactly what I was thinking lol. Definitely better than their other single. More ambitious and new
This new drummer sounds great🎉
Nice reaction man! Ohhhh Yurrrr!!!! 🤘🤘🤘
I'd love to get his take on the resurgence of respect for classic prog, from King Crimson to (even though he talks about them incessantly) Rush, Yes and such? The variances of prog metal integration and growth? Etc. Love you 66Samus. ♥️
With the notable exception of the guitar solo, it sounds like very classical (and nonetheless very good) DT.
The guitar solo is orignal and amazing.
My boyfriend just told me yesterday he got tickets for me for xmas to the philly show Feb 7. I am absolutely going nutz! This album is going to be incredible!!!
Cant wait to see them in February at the Opry in Nashville!!!!!
You and I both cannot wait for that album to hit, and hopefully they'll add a few more dates and places to their North American tour!
Cannot wait for the album!!!!! Please ask Portnoy what his current relationship is with Mangini! I love em both. I hope they're cool.
I wasn’t a big fan of it at first but after a few listens and letting it digest for a bit, it’s a bop 🤘🏻
That part when Petrucci turns into Steve Lukather! Love it!
You should ask Mike if he listened to the DT albums while he was gone and also for the Mangini songs on the set currently you should ask him what was his approach learning the songs and how did he make them his own live. Thanks man! This new song sounds amazing, can't wait for the album, been listening to DT for years.
Nice one Samus!
The guitar solo had some heavy shades of Steve morse...love it
PAPA PORTNOY HAS ARRIVED!!!!!!
Petrucci channeling Steve Morse on that guitar solo big time.
The intro has major Opeth vibes. Love it!! 🤘
seeing them live is bad ass. ordered the cd
i've listened to this song repeatedly.
fucken bad ass
Epic in so many ways! Carry On Lads!
Until Labrie enters, this sounds like Deliverance era Opeth, which is awesome.
What an awesome song! Love it!
Petrucci channelling some Steve Morse with that solo
When John Petrucci solo it's sound like blues and jazz 🔥🔥
I like how it's called a visualizer, this is a damn music video lol!
That's the DT I missed. I LOVE IT
This is basically what "The Alien" would have sounded like if MP were on drums. Simpler and catchier, with a real DT spice in the mix choices. Anyway I'm glad we have both.
Great video! Interview question -- Would you guys be interested in doing an Acoustic album? Maybe like Acoustic Theater.
Holy shit! This is the best song they've made in a while!
Oh. Yur. Couldn't be more excited.
Question for Portnoy: what is his favorite type of fart for percussion? Does he prefer a high pitched airy one for a crash or a low pitched one with a hum for a floor Tom?
That’s a great question!!!!
I bet the high pitched one
He might want to stack both !
Love Dream Theater.
The guitar solo there sounded a lot like Nili Brosh.
The track is Double Entendre. She does a session on EMGtv where you will hear that same groovy beat played. Another top song buy the great Dream Theater💪
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, I NEED TO SEE YOUR "TOOL - VICARIOUS" drum cover ! ! !
Cool vidéo ! I like the song but Prefer the speed and the chorus of Night terror. My Question to MP : What did he think about the Astonishing ? Specially on the the drum, and is he interessted to play some songs live in his style ?
One question how could he refer to the drummers that he listened to when he was a child who inspired him techically the most?
First, I would do the "We're not worthy" from Wayne's World. Then I'd ask him about making this visualizer, since I'm pretty sure it's depicting WWI and I'm very curious about the concept of this album. Last, if he still wanted to record longer, I'd ask about making this new album with Mike back, and how it went \,,/
Mike’s back in, and so am I!!!
What amazes me is how quick these guys put out new music after Portnoy comes back.
cant wait to see the live!
From the first Hit, you know Portnoi is playing ^^
Samus, if you like the Petrucci solo part look into Steve Morses work, this one is so insprired by Steves sound and paying homage to one of the great peers
The song that keeps on giving!😜
We are SO back. I liked the Mangini years, but the pocket that Portnoy, Petrucci, Myung, and Rudess live in just can't be matched.
Have you ever done a reaction Video to Alex Bent in Trivium? Songs like "What the Dead Men Say" or "Like a Sword over Damocles" ? BTW love this video and all your other videos. Keep making Great content. Subbed up. Much Love from Southern California!! ❤❤
Please ask:
In 2008 DT was planning on a colab album with Opeth. Would he consider that again?
This has a Sacrificed Sons vibe. So cool
Right where you say John you make me cry with your guitar solos, he was doing Steve Morse, Dixie Dreggs. I am surprised that you didnt mention that.
19 december i will see them and ill tell about night terror
You can easily headbang to DT. You were doing it, you thought about it and that's what complicated it.
MP question 2. When the tour reaches the U.S. will there be any post MP era songs played, example The Alien, or Bridges in the Sky just as examples?
Drums are "less complicated" than what Mangini would've done. IMO, Portnoys creativity maxed out a long time ago. Thats what was so good about Mangini. It was all new to us and to Mangini. Portnoy has be doing the same fills for ever.
You're right about it being less complicated, in a technical level Manguini is way ahead yes. but, the feel bro, the coherence the band has been showing just with 2 songs is in another level that Manguini, sandly, never was able to reach, and that's ok, these guys are teen age friends, nothing tops that for a band like this.

Metal in ww1 💀
Just a random thought, were you the prototypical drummer for Mutiny Within?
about this track U literally you spoke my thouhgts (of train) LOL. Thanx @66Samus
