  • The pursuit of humans catching fish goes back to the most ancient of times. As you can imagine, it was primarily done as a means of harvesting food, but it also developed into a recreational activity where one can spend quality time relaxing in the great outdoors as well as an opportunity to test one’s skills. In this video, we’ll trace the history of fly fishing from the days of the ancient Egyptians to 2nd century Rome, where Claudius Aelianus described the practice of Macedonian fishermen crafting artificial lures and going after fish on the Asterias river. We’ll then see the development of fly fishing as a sport in the culture of 15th century England. It's commonly believed that an article published in 1496 entitled The Treatise of Fly Fishing with an Angle, written by Dame Juliana Breners, an English nun, gave birth to fly fishing as a sport. Many other foundational publications emerged in the centuries that followed, including the Secrets of Angling by John Dennys in 1613. The Complete Angler by Isaac Walton in 1653, and A Fly Fishing Entomology by Alfred Ronalds in 1836. These and many other timeless books and articles continued to help fly fishing develop across the globe.
