      I would love to have you make a video about Fa Zheng. To me, the best addition to the DW and Shu force in general. He fit right in as the contradicting character to Shu's ideology of benevolence. His character made a big influence to Liu Bei, and even Guan Yu's kids after their father died. I think he was the only one that made Zhuge Liang watched out more than Sima Yi.

    Cao Cao was the best ruler the Eastern Han Dynasty could have hoped for to bring order, stability and justice to the land locked in endless war and chaos. I know that if I was alive in China back then I would serve him.

      Cao cao was not a compassionate ruler, he uses his subjects like pawns wisely, but once you are of no use to him or you have failed him , you have a high chance of being executed right away

      Nah Brian you're looking at the fictional version instead of the Records of the Three Kingdoms. Cao Cao actually had the best administration among the three kingdoms. He also treated his subordinates' family very well, including those from his defeated enemies. Just look at how many subordinates he managed to attract despite his clear-cut ambitions. On the other hand, Liu Bei allowed his men to rape and pillage. Zhang Fei's "wife" was someone he kidnapped and raped repeatedly for decades.

      Yeah, truly a shame. I watched the Cao Pi video which said that despite Cao Pi's raw talent, he was stubborn and undisciplined. Cao Cao on the other hand seems to be able to maintain his composure well.

    • @Blackwolfninja89
      @Blackwolfninja89 5 років тому +2

      @@GrubKiller436 Cao Cao was a great military leader and Han subject but he only made four mistakes in life. First mistake was wrongfully killing his relative because he thought his uncle was gonna turn him over to Dong Zhuo. This would later spark his quote "I rather betray the world than have the world betray me". Second mistake was when he got too arrogant after uniting Northern China and tried to campaign against the south. His third mistake was not listening to one of the advisers during Hanzong to retreat. Cao Cao was driven to avenge Xiahou Yuan so he put that adviser to death and lost the battle Hanzong and nearly lost his life. His last mistake was a fatal one, he accused Hua Tuo of trying to kill him when all he wanted to do was remove the tumor from his head. Hua Tuo died in prison and Cao Cao died from his illness.

    A couple misconceptions about Cao Cao is that he was brilliant when it came to infrastructure having constructed waterways and canals in the lands under his reign that helped with the irrigation of crops, had a unique sense of honor (Unlike Liu Bei who hid his desires for the throne behind a veil of benevolence since that was all he had to attract followers and had made plenty of dishonorable and deceitful moves himself) Cao Cao was the warlord who if he was going to lie to you, he would be upfront about it, was well loved by his men for treating many officers as though they were his own extended family, was a highly scholastic individual, and also while he had a great fondness for strategists and powerful officers was actually quite capable in the military arts himself. Also of note is that Cao Pi was actually Cao Cao's SECOND son rather than his first.

  • @blueandyyb
    @blueandyyb 6 років тому +6

    Let me explain the meaning of the quote at 3:26. King Wen of Zhou was a lord that served the last emperor of the Shang Dynasty (1100 B.C.). It is said that he had control of 2/3 of the lands in China, but he did not attempt to usurp the emperor. Therefore, Cao Cao meant to say that although he had in fact grasped the absolute power, he would not usurp the Han emperor. HOWEVER, King Wen's son King Wu proceeded to usurp the throne, so some people argue that what Cao Cao really meant was to leave the task of establishing a new dynasty to his son. There are many reasons why Cao Cao did not attempt to overthrow the emperor. I can elaborate if anyone is interested.

    • @jamiemartin1434
      @jamiemartin1434 6 років тому +2

      Please do I'm very interested in Cao Cao the reason why did not attempt to overthrow the emperor.

    • @blueandyyb
      @blueandyyb 6 років тому +4

      Some of the reasons that I can recall now are:
      1. Cao Cao established his figure as a Han loyalist when he was young, and he always promised that he would only be the protector of Han. Even after he became old and one step away from the absolute power, he did not want the history to remember him as a man that eats his own word.
      2. Wei was the most powerful state among the three kingdoms. A major reason was that it attracted a lot of talented men due to being the orthodox state (holding the Han Emperor). Cao Cao benefited from it a lot. However, this situation also caused issues for him because it was hard for him to distinguish who were loyal to him from the Han loyalist. In fact, some of his most important subordinates were Han loyalists, such as Xun Yu (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xun_Yu ). Therefore, Cao Cao knew that if he proclaims to be the emperor, Wei would likely to shatter.
      3. Cao Cao knew that if he proclaims to be the emperor, Liu Bei and Sun Quan would soon follow, but he as the first usurper would take all the blames. In fact, this is exactly what happened after his son usurped the throne. One story: in 219 A.D., Sun Quan sent a letter to Cao Cao and encouraged the latter to become the emperor. Cao Cao showed the letter to his subordinates and said that Sun Quan tried to bake him on fire.

      @@blueandyyb for number 2. Are there any recorded defection from Wei to Shu after Cow Pee ( *sorry* Tsao Pi ) took the throne? Especially the Han loyalists.

    • @blueandyyb
      @blueandyyb 4 роки тому +1

      @@idndyzgaming Great question! I actually don't recall any famous one. I think there are several reasons. 1. Most of the Han loyalists in Wei have already passed away when Cao Pi took the throne, either naturally or from persecution, such as Xun Yu whom I have mentioned. 2. Cao Cao would promote anyone with talent to important places regardless of his background. This is unorthodox in that time because power used to concentrate among a small number of elite families. Therefore, Cao Cao's rule was constantly challenged by those families that lost their privileges so that he had to be extra careful. Cao Pi, on the other hand, immediately abandoned his father's idea after Cao Cao died. He established the nine-rank system (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine-rank_system) that guaranteed those families would pass their power down. Therefore, the powerful families would not impede him from usurping. 3. Cao Pi did not usurp by killing the Han Emperor. He instead coerced the emperor to "willingly" step down. Therefore, despite criticisms, the procedure was actually "legal." Fun fact, Cao Cao married his daughter to the Han Emperor. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empress_Cao_(Han_dynasty)) When Cao Pi took the throne, she vocally despised her brother.

    A question and a correction. When you said "Imagine what would've happened if Cao Cao had recruited Lu Bu", do you mean the great things he could've done? Because Cao Cao executed Lu Bu because he was too unpredictable and untrustable. Also, Cao Pi isn't Cao Cao's eldest son. His eldest son is Cao Ang, who died in Wan Castle during the escape.

    • @DrakeVagabond
      @DrakeVagabond  8 років тому +6

      Conflicting records aside, a common consensus is that Cao Cao considered it, even for a moment. Either Liu Bei reminded him of Lu Bu's treachery or Cao Cao declined Lu Bu's pleas out right. I went with what involved both parties since I'm guessing thats what the games are somewhat trying to imply.
      As for Cao Pi, pretty sure he can't name a corpse as an heir.

    • @IdoroJustice
      @IdoroJustice 8 років тому +4

      That doesn't change the fact that Cao Pi is his second son, not his first. In the video you said 'first son', not 'eldest'.

      Lu Bu was easy to use and seen through
      Lu Bu had an immature mentality , he's just a mere brute , if one has the insight of a leader, one can discern if Lu Bu is going to betray you. Cao cao has the capability to use Lu Bu , but a pity that he didn't wanna take the risk.
      If you look at both of their histories, Cao Cao did even more despicable things than Lu Bu. Judging from his cunningness and manipulative mind, he can use Lu Bu easily like a puppet

    What if Lu Bu joined Cao Cao's side, is good topic worth to argue. Historically he thought surrendering many times but Chen Gong stopped him. In some way Chen Gong dragged Lu Bu to death (sadly a skilled general Gao Shun too). But what if Lu Bu joined Cao Cao after Xiapi. I imagined two route possible. First route is he remained loyal like Zhang Liao. He wasn't good terms with Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu. Fighting against them under Cao Cao's command benefits him as well. Depends on his actions he could be a legendary commander like Zhang Liao or considering his earlier poor command skill he could be overshadowed by his former underlings Zhang Liao and Gao Shun.
    For second route, when he got an opportunity he betray Cao Cao but that route is a tricky one. AfterDong Zhou incident I think Cao Cao never fully trusts Lu Bu. For starting an uprising in Cao Cao's force not really works as well. Unlike Liu Bei that time just had two loyal officer (and both of them are poor commanders), Cao Cao had many loyal commanders. All of his high ranking generals are his relatives (Xiahou Dun, Xiahou Yuan, Cao Ren, Cao Hong) and he treat his other commanders (Guo Jia, Yu Jin, Li Dian, Yue Jin, Xu Zhu) well, they didn't turn their back for Lu Bu. Lu Bu can't find any support from Cao Cao's force even worst case senario Zhang Liao and Gao Shun could be turn against him too. The only possibilty could be, he works with anti-Cao Cao group in Han goverment. He could participate their Cao Cao assasination plot (if we consider he accept work with Liu Bei the another plotter). But historicaly Cao Cao cought conspirators. Somehow he escapes he doesn't had same credit as Liu Bei, probably nobody accept him. This route, he doesn't stand much longer.

      Balthier you are right. 'Romance of the 3 kingdoms' is fantasy novel. All characters are created from author's imagination according to whats popular during that era. Furthermore author may sometimes be flicker-minded, leading to descrepancy in character's action.
      -Cao Cao is easily seen as more pragmatic character. Bowing down to power when necessary, scorning at benevolence without power and inherited powers.
      -He is highly cautious (murdering whole family during his escape, beheading generals who correspond with enemy). Up to debate whether this led to his inner group made up of mainly Caos and Xia-Hous (his birth family name).
      -Importantly, Cao Cao never declare himself as Emperor, unlike Liu Bei and Sun Quan. Yet Cao is constantly being treated as if he already usurped the throne.
      -Some modern works show Cao Cao as pervert who prefers married women. In Dyansty Warriors, Zhen Ji (Cao's daughter-in-law) has very suggestive lines, when she comes to Cao's aid or Cao comes to her aid or when Cao defeats her. Haven't check if two Qiaos have similar lines.
      -He hates to be predictable. One of the later battle (I cant recall which one) in novel, an advisor saw through Cao Cao's intention to withdraw, started packing before formal notice was issued. Cao Cao angrily dismiss the advisor and fought the enemy anyway, knowing he will lose. He lost the battle.
      -Zhu Ge Liang, and his inheritor Jiang Wei, place defeating Cao Cao as highest priority. Cao is a really good administrator. If given time, Wei will soon overpower Shu. Shu does have fertile land and isn't a pushover.
