    Great video and very useful tips..kinda back and forth on a few different models and think your video just made the decision for me. Also a newbie to kayaking and trying to fine one that will do well for fishing and camping trips. Feel this one could possibly be what I'm looking for. Thank you for the great video/review.

    Thanks for the great video!!! I just picked up a used Sun Dolphin Aruba 12 SS a month ago. I’ve been looking at UA-cam videos to figure out which modifications and accessories I want to add to it. The Aruba and the excursion look almost identical, other than mine is bright lime green. I struggled with that front foam too but I got it in place and will probably use some silicone to seal it up and glue it in place. Thanks for the great ideas!!!

    I threw the foam under the seat away. Went to Lowes and got two pieces of foam 24x24 and cut each one 18x24 and the leftovers made the third layer so I glued them together and ended up with a block 18x24x3inch then hung my kayak upside down and with help with my brother pulled down the seat and shoved the foam under the seat , it fits tight but will go it works great stiffening up the seat and the floor , Doug

    Thanks for making this video I had commented that you should make one. Wow when you get going it goes very fast. I notice something floating as as you went by it and you was going pretty fast. Those things are really nice man. Thanks again.

    Nice job 👍 good video. For you and your viewers who are starting out they sell airbags that you can inflate and put in the kayaks that's what the whitewater kayakers use on their kayaks you can get them on ebay you just inflate them and put them inside the kayak or canoe. That way you gain extra buoyancy and better handling.

    Great information and Review - I have a Pelican Pursuit 100* / But I have been so impressed with the reviews I have seen on this Aruba 12 SS SunDolphin sit inside Kayak...Especially for the price point- That I just recently ordered it from Academy Sports! / I hope I do not have to put Foam in it as you have... but I would recommend to you, that you can trim that stuff (foam) easily with a sharp knife , box cutter ect.. around your seat and It will give you a lot cleaner look inside while still providing you the support you talk about*

    I got a few pelican boats and they are made very similar. my pursuit 80x is a cheep little 8' boat but sooooo fun. It's not a premium hull by it's so small that it's super ridged. no flex what so ever. my unison 135t is a premium hull so even know it's a 13.5' and tandem it's sturdy as hell and I can actually stand up in it. I'm really surprised you had to do that to the sun dolphin. Great you made it work for you tho. kayaking is so awesome is so many ways

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly

      It is. I got a little 9 footer cheap off Craig's list to see if I'd like it before investing in a legal size one (12 foot minimum on Prettyboy reservoir). Oddly, the little one was much sturdier than the Sundolphin, but with a flat bottom and no tracking at all. It only took a couple of times out on it before I was totally i love with kayaking.

    Good review, much appreciated. I am shopping them right now. I am torn between the excursion 12 and the journey 12 leaning toward the excursion. What made you decide between a closed vs open kayak? and how is it to fish from. Thanks

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  6 років тому +1

      The sit inside keeps me dry and out of the wind. The "Aruba" is the same as the excursion, but without the rod holder and it doesn't come in olive green (only bright colors).
      Fishing from sitting postion is different, but you get used to it.

      I purchased the Excursion 12ss last night and I am stoked, I will do a minimalistic set up for fishing, I never take the entire shop full of supplies and I have plenty of rubber roofing I will incorporate into the sides, floor and a few places on the deck for silencing. Shopping life preservers now and I dont want a giant bulky thing or need tons of pockets. I picked mine up from walmart they have a rollback sale going on for $449 so yeah let the adventure begin.

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly

      Check this one out. It's a few more bucks, but since you're in it all day, it's totally worth it. I love this vest. It's not only fo fish, but for fishing from a kayak or canoe. The padding on the back is only up top, so it doesn't affect the way you sit. amzn.to/2I2qQmP

    I've been thinking about getting one. I like to do a lot of camping and backpacking. I was thinking this would be the perfect kayak cuz it has so much storage space. If I cut some of the center out of that foam I'll be able to access the front of that storage space a whole lot better. And with it still serving its purpose of keeping the structure..

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  5 років тому +1

      You'd have a difficult time accessing it, but long things like rods or poles would be able to slide all the way up front if you did that.

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  3 роки тому

      No, it's all open inside. There's no real compartments. The foam doesn't make a complete seal. I'd recommend using LocTite foam. It's really dense.

    Nice video, I've been thinking of trading in my canoe for a kayak. Any advice on that? Also, for reference, what is your height and weight? I'm fairly tall and slim. I don't want to buy something I won't be comfortable in, but this looks like what I'd like for sure!

      I think you'd have the leg room. I can't really compare it to any other kayak, but I like it just fine. I have a better fishing kayak now (Ascend H12) but I still use the Sundolphin for going out to paddle not fish

      @@averagejoe8213I paid around $700 for mine. The "Excursion" is just the fishing version of the "Aruba" model, and it comes in green. The Aruba is about $150 cheaper than the Excursion. The 10 foot are considerably cheaper, but I need the 12 foot to be legal on the reservoir I fish.

      (I know this video and these comments are 4yrs old but figured I'd answer for those coming to it now/in the future like myself) Licensing Requirements change from State to State so the best would be to contact your local License Bureau, DNR, Fishing/hunting License dealsr, or boat Dealership any of these should be able to at least point you to the right place. In Minnesota currently (March 2022) any personal watercraft 14ft long or longer requires registration with (I believe) the DMV or DNR...my Kayak is 13.5" so it doesn't require registration so I haven't went through that process. Hope this helps!
