I literally almost snorted when he said “simple” right before he plays literally one of the most complex and astounding drum beats I’ve ever heard. 😂 Dude is a beast.
I'm not a massive sleep token fan but this guy is absolutely nuts, I've never seen someone move so fluidly but so damn fast at the same time. it's like watching a snake strike when he hits
@341Special First of all, the sound is massively determined by the actual snare, so "the main hardware" if you will. I am not sure about the snare, but it sounds like wood to me. Cranking the reso and batter head is a factor, yes, but there is still much more to it. Also you might have to use very few wires on your snare wires and crank the wires, too. Then, he is hitting only rimshots while in addition to that the rim he uses on his snare matters, which might be made of steel by the looks. Last but surely not least, this is very well mixed with compression and gating which shortens and tightens the hits massively. Hope that helps, maybe someone else can add some remaining "mystery ingredient". Edit: Of course the heads also matter. Clear Ambassadors as reso heads and probably P77 on the batter side.
I'm a beginner and I swear I can play nearly nothing complicated but I also close my eyes. I think it's never bad to do this. Music is more a feeling to me and especially at the beginning it's important to get to internalize the distances from cymbals, toms, hi-hat and snare when you hit them.
Honestly, it's II's near perfect control of dynamics that makes his playing so fucking incredible. He hits every single drum exactly as hard as he means to every time.
I'm pretty sure this is the first time drumeo has dedicated two videos to the same song. They gave greyson nekrutman hypnosis as a challenge some time ago. I couldn't be happier that such an incredible track and display of drums has graced UA-cam twice now.

I m used to do it since a couple of years now and to think and stay away from typical druming concept. There is nothing preventing you from reaching the hi hat or cymbals from underneath, or using your fingers on the snare during a cross stick, or using the base of your sticks rather than the tip if you need to quickly reach the hi hat while you re hitting a cymbal. It s a principle I keep in mind when playing since several years. What matters is the sound and rhythm that you come up with, and not how you make it happen.
the thing i have notice with II is that it seems like hes mouthing the words along with Vessel while he's playing. i simply adore the love the boys have for each other and for their music.
The little bits of him showing us I find fascinating. I’m what you call a music illiterate. Totally clueless of how it’s all done. Writing music and putting lyrics together to create a demo then the final masterpiece. But with ii despite his acute skill and devotion to his craft he makes it so easy to listen to his drumming.
