  • In the 19th century, much of Africa was a mystery to Europeans. Dr. David Livingstone led an expedition following the Zambezi River to "fill in the gaps" on Western civilization's map of the continent. In 1855, Livingstone's expedition came across the largest waterfall in the world. Livingstone named this sighting Victoria Falls in honor of Queen Victoria of Britain, but the indigenous Lozi language name, Mosi-oa-Tunya-"The Smoke That Thunders"-continues in common usage today. It was Livingstone's goal to open previously unexplored lands in Africa to international trade, resulting in colonization practices that have had long lasting effects.
