I was there when all of this happened .Our family lived on Aerial hill , and I as a kid could monitor the progress on the wall every day . My father , the late Jim Downham was MIC of the police at Kariba and took me most places when I was not at school . Thousands of memories .......The best years of my life . Saw the coffer dams blown up , went on some 'operation Noah expeditions ' , chatted to Mr Fothergill , witnessed the floods .....oh , and of course loved the yachting and amazing fishing....Those were the days ......
As a Zimbabwean who lives and works at Kariba in the Bumi Hills district as a wildlife conservationist, Operation Noah is the greatest animal rescue of all time. The Compassion and Kindness for the animals is the reason I still have hope for humanity. Rupert Fothergill who lead the rescue is my hero and role model. God bless them, every one
I am not an engineer, but I am interested in some aspects. Kariba Dam is the largest man-made dam (185 km3 of water). It is almost five times bigger than the Chinese Three Gorges Dam (38 km3). However, the Three-Gorges Dam has an installed capacity of 22,500 MW compared to Kariba's 1,626 MW (with the Zambia side). Is the difference only in terms of number turbines, Kariba has 14 compared to 34 and their capacity? What is the maximum that can be harnessed from Kariba, if financial resources were available (a simple matchbox calculation says 110,000 MW)?
At least they tried to save all of the wildlife in operation Noah when you build great projects and constructions you must be responsible for your consequences on the landscape and einviroment and wildlife we must live in harmony with mother nature for future genrations and we must leave our children a planet where they can exisist no body cant ignore what we are doing to planet earth please save planet earth for future generations❤🌍🌍🌍🇿🇼🇿🇼🇿🇼🌍🌍🌍❤
if all Zambia n Zimbabwean minerals are used for the betterment of this station it would be one of the most well spoken about power station globally, now the problem is that they need help to finish up a 240 million project, to rehabilitate the dying giant
Yes ,I was there to see the whole scenario . My father was negotiating with the Batonka tribesmen and a terrible scream rent the air . ...An hysterical woman exited a rather large hut screaming her lungs out . She had encountered a massive python ( Approx 6 m in length) searching for vermin . My father had to shoot this beautiful specimen to stop the shenanigans and calm the people down .......One out of MANY stories . James D .
Attack on Pieck Because of a design flaw : the plunge pool below the Kariba Dam has deepened beyond what was expected. It has eroded the rock substrat and the hole is more than 90m deep. An attempt to fix the issue is currently under way.
There are two video versions of the construction the Italian and the English. This is the english one which is "We are english, very rich, very cool do everything like its planned and there's not any problem". A bit fake and shit if you ask me. The Italian video actually shows you the floodings, recognized they miscalculated the power of the Zambeze and had to very much re start the project from zero, they show you how the families on the hill were living, how the turbine room was made, and on top of that give credit to the engineers that worked on it. ua-cam.com/video/xTFyXi3CRL4/v-deo.html

The era of EV is coming. Hydropower is the most important industry.
Awesome job
You forgot to mention that the Tonga people were forced out of their homes where they inhabited for years.
For years is an understatement, for hundreds of years years is roughly correct.
It was worth it tho, I hope they compensated them

I highly doubt that that wild boar caught at 5:52 was "carried away to safety" as you would want to imagine it 😁

Λογος I see, what a shame. Thanks for your reply.
Attack on Pieck You are welcome.
Just a pitty currently, 2024 year, kariba dam is almost empty and like non operitive, due to a 2 year drought
Who build it china ???
Italians, I think.
500 million pounds by the time they finished!
Nothing man made lasts forever..
The White was INCREDIBLE
the film would be more on point without the added melodramatics from 2;54 to 3:21
