Let's just make it plain and simple , they didn't want Black folks to have anything . Racism is everywhere even now . A museum should be built there so people know the history of Seneca Village and not Central Park. Maybe they should change the name to Seneca Village Park .

Seneca Village was recognized development from 1825-1857! Boundaries from 82nd-89th street between 7th and 8th avenue. The community was comprised of not only a Black population but an Irish and German population. In those times the Irish were also discriminated against because of their Catholic religion, they spoke Gaelic their native language, Irish need not apply signs flourished and were characterized as monkeys in Irish clothing style! The Black and Irish population both had adequate little homes which spared them from living in the overcrowded and crime infested tenant buildings! The City of New York used eminent domain falsely stated this group of people lived in squalor! The City was able to claim and clear this area. You can visit this area in Central Park!

The interesting thing about Seneca village too was that during this time Irish and German immigrants also joined and was an early example of racial harmony in the country at that time before the goverment swooped in and used Eminent Domain. Even though they were compensated for the land, I still don’t like that it’s constitutional for our goverment to just seize land for any reason they see fit regardless of if there is compensation at all.
In addition to that, regardless of if you’re apart of a black power/progressive movement or not the fact that things like this was always done by a government throughout history should make y’all question any proposals to expand the government’s power.

I tracked some of my relatives living with an African American couple and their young children who I think actually owned the building or living space, as well as a young Irish Catholic man from Dublin who I think ends up getting married while living there, two Italian children/teens (they may have actually been friends visiting with a couple of the other children), and a Chinese family as well... I believe the husband was listed as being from Shanghai and his wife was listed from Canada, and they had a son close in age to the Italian kids and the African American family’s oldest child (I think a son), as well as a younger child close to African American couple’s youngest child. The husband was listed as a freed slave with no place of origin I can remember and I think his wife was born in the northern part of the United States and I thought their last name was Whitehead. On the side of one census sheet, I noticed “help” written near the African American family but it was crossed out. So, I’m pretty sure the census taker wasn’t expecting them to be landlords, which it seemed that they were. I also think the census taker had to redo the sheet a couple times, I always like to imagine about five different languages and people of all ages talking over each other at the same time to the guy at the door. Lol
The last name of the elderly couple I am related to was Romani and I believe they were Catholic or East Orthodox, on each census I was able to find (they were free previews on Ancestry before I bought a test kit for my now passed Grandpa) I noticed a couple misspellings, some sounding more Yiddish and others actually spelled like Romanized Chinese names, one was “Hu-Men Yi” I believe, but I think the first name on that census was Julius or Michael (for the man) and those are actually namesakes in my family, on that side to this day.
I think the entire dwelling was trying to understand what their name was and wrote down their best guesses. At the time, I think they were from Austria-Hungary but that empire switched names and even leadership so much. They likely spoke three languages and probably had very heavy East European/Russian accents with heavy trilling so, I think that would have caused some healthy confusion. I’ve been teaching myself a both Korean as well as Japanese pronunciation and I noticed in most East Asian languages there are no heavy R sounds... so I assume their son was trying to navigate both Chinese and English from his parents and whichever East European languages (plus Latin) my relatives were tossing into the mix.
Romani is actually labeled surname for people who were traveling as/with or were born a “Gypsy” in parts of modern day Eurasian countries. There were laws against renting or selling property to people who were given that last name as a label, often forced to go through surname change laws that happened throughout those countries. The United States also took part in Gypsy discrimination, especially for land ownership or housing, and I believe some laws exist to this day that are so outdated they still maintain a clause for Gypsy or Nomadic people to be excluded from certain rights in renting or purchasing property if a landlord chooses to enforce that.
Also, my Mom remembers her Grandma talking about where her family lived growing up (her family had to move more than her own Grandparents did) and she always would talk about all kinds of people living together from around the world in a few rooms helping each other with housework like washing clothes, cooking and taking care of the smaller children. Most of my Mom’s Grandma’s family ended up moving to Pennsylvania and other neighboring states in the second half of the 1800s-1930s to work in the coal mines and a lot of the women were dressmakers or housecleaners as well.

Why would they be reclassified as African American? I've never heard nothing like this. Do you actually think that the Natives would go for that? Plus by then they were already on their reservations. Nobody really care (d) for black people, so of course we couldn't buy land and build on it🤦🏽‍♀️. Please, I think that they were a thriving group of black people who brought that land and was forced out due to eminent domain and early gentrification. If you know the history you would know that once they were forced out of Seneca Village they moved up to a place called Harlem, and they really thrived and was living good.
