January thru March on shad rap in hidden spots. Me and my uncle would catch our Biggest Bass of the year while everyone else was trying to catch a bass. Lol
Thank you again for another great video. Ironically.... I met you this morning in Raleigh NC at the Boat show and during your presentation you spoke about the Shad rap. I'm looking forward to getting back on the water to give them a try!
To keep a Shad Rap from tumbling on a cast I did what Rick Clunn said to do. Replace the rear treble hook with one size bigger. I've done that, and it eliminated the tumble effect and it did not hurt the action of the Shad Rap.
I personally think it's worth retying the braid to leader knot once or twice per day to get the extra sensitivity of braid. I also fish the braid on a medium-light rod to add back some of the give needed for treble hook baits. It's also a great setup for 1/4 blade baits in winter. I use a tiny snap and can bounce back and forth from blade to shadrap to Frittside Jr, all on the same rod/reel.
Happy New Year Ott! I look forward to seeing what you accomplish in 2025. May the LORD bless you and your family! Great video. The Shad Rap is definitely a sleeper in the cold water months.
Happy new year to you and your family. Appreciate the shad rap lesson. Caught a few fish over the years with it, this may help me catch more. God bless and have a great day.
Happy New Year Ott…..the Shad Rap is an icon for sure. I have caught a lot of fish on this and yes it excels in cold water. My only gripe is that I wish they used oval split rings. When you’re tying the baits with a round split ring trying to keep the knot away from where they join when your hands are cold it’s annoying!! Thanks for your insight!!
What size VMC redline hooks do you use on 5’ vs 6’ vs 7’s? Are they the same size that comes on them and just an upgrade or are they different size or length of shanks??
At 50°-55° water temps, are there “non-custom painted” colors you’d recommend? I’ve been most successful with the #5 in Baby Bass, but that’s generally in warmer months.
I leave the split ring and tie to it. I used to use a snap on most cranks but don’t anymore. It’s really hard on a shad rap to get your snap down in there to the eye anyway.
There are times one is better than another. I like the shad rap more when the water is under 50 and tougher conditions. 45 the shad rap is always better for sure!
I get the message. Can’t really power fish through ice But All shad raps FLOAT. From the originals made of balsa to the newer ones. So how did you “drop it down”.
The braid freezes because it absorbes water. When that happens you need to go to mono or a co polymer line.Fluro gets a little more brittle and breaks easier.
@@jonathancarter3999 you could .Mono floats ,fluro sinks i guess guys figure they get more depth and less visable with the fluro. The mono will allow a little more strech as well which is good.Fluro a bit more abrasive resistant too. All in what you are looking for. Both will work.I think a lot of guys really over think a lot of things.

Shad raps are the best lures I have ever heard of and thanks Ott for being truthful

Thanks for taking time to do these videos Ott! I really enjoy them every month

Thank you ott..I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching your channel and on mlf
You are the reason I throw a shad rap today. Your UA-cam channel gave me the confidence to unlock its potential. Thanks Ott

Woah déjà vu. I was just watching last years baits and techniques. Love the underwater addition!

I love the #5 in hot summer when fish are keyed in on small shad.
I always like watching your videos for the great information & tips.
HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎉
Details are everything. Thanks for sharing.
Gave me a nudge to get out in the cold , thanks.
Great video! Thanks for sharing the information
Great video! Very helpful information!

Great Video Ott!
Happy New Year Ott🎉
Happy New Year!
Thanks for the info Ott!
Great video!
Thanks!
Great video.
What size VMC redline hooks do you use on 5’ vs 6’ vs 7’s? Are they the same size that comes on them and just an upgrade or are they different size or length of shanks??
Size 6
Love my SR 5s and 7s.
Great video Ott. Any chance you could share who custom paints your shad raps? I'd love to buy a few in some of the colors you showed off. Thanks!
It’s a buddy of mine but he doesn’t do much for sale. Just his friends. Fulks custom paints is a good one.
The best painted shad rap I had we created here in Anniston called Coosa Special which shockingly is on your og tiny. Interesting.......
I have heard of people going up one hook size in the front to get a foot deeper and slower rise when paused. Thoughts?
I would rather add a suspend dot on the throat myself.
TIP!!! Add a suspend dot to the tail makes these baits cast like a bullet.
How’s fishing been on Douglas since the flood?
Crappie cranker here....same for crappie in winter?
What size redline hooks would you change on each rap?
At 50°-55° water temps, are there “non-custom painted” colors you’d recommend? I’ve been most successful with the #5 in Baby Bass, but that’s generally in warmer months.
For sure! The shad and craw patterns are 2 of the very best. The Caribbean shad is another good one.
Do you take the split rings off and use clips or tie direct to ring?
I leave the split ring and tie to it. I used to use a snap on most cranks but don’t anymore. It’s really hard on a shad rap to get your snap down in there to the eye anyway.
Where we get those colors?
What size redline hooks do you recommend for the Shad Rap #5?
Fish the #5 Shad Rap on a Carolina Rig for deep fish.
What size VMC redline hooks do you use on 5’ vs 6’ vs 7’s?
For the shad rap 5 and 6 I use a 6, for a shad rap 7 I use a 5.
🙏
Happy New 2025🎆🎇🎊👊🏻🤟🏻
Crazy how you guys have fish that shallow in the winter. Our lakes are too deep and too clear for fish in 5'.
👍👍👍👍👍
We need some new Ott colors for the shadrap and deep tiny, please!!!!
Why a shad rap over an OG tiny?
There are times one is better than another. I like the shad rap more when the water is under 50 and tougher conditions. 45 the shad rap is always better for sure!
Thanks Ott , really enjoyed your videos.
I once tied a shad rap to a tip-up and dropped it down through a foot of ice. Nothing happened
I get the message.
Can’t really power fish through ice
But
All shad raps FLOAT. From the originals made of balsa to the newer ones.
So how did you “drop it down”.
Why not a mono leader
The braid freezes because it absorbes water. When that happens you need to go to mono or a co polymer line.Fluro gets a little more brittle and breaks easier.
@ why not use a mono leader all the time tho when using a shad rap? Even when the braid isn’t freezing

You could. No reason not to really!
Might be the better option really!
