Lars was incredible on justice, not because he’s a drum phenomenon but more that he’s a very smart creative person. I think black album was probably a relief for him that he could sit back and kick a simple groove.

That's true. But if we look at the drumming, we can see that he's rough around the edges. Also, he'll change time signatures in circles around you. He can hear that crap.
And the more I've listened to his playing as of late, I do wish for some flashiness in there sometimes, but then, so many metal drummers do that just to do it. Whereas I think Lars is, what you might call, a smart drummer. Like, what's my job here, is it to be a big-ego drummer or do the rigfht thing by this band? We musicians can be so egotistical about our shit and in a sense you can tell Lars dials back. Of course, that's until you dial in the snare in the mix, but... You know.

This is bullshit, he is a shitty drummer becuase he stop pushing himself and practicing. He hasn't improved his skills in a long time and always had issues with his tempo, Lars used to use his high energy and cocaine filled body to push the tempo to the max, that worked with he was young, but after his youth was over he didnt had any skills replace that. Lars pushed himself when he was out there feeling the pressure of Benante and Lombardo, it was good for the band and good for Lars as a musician, the minute he felt comfortable he went to shit.

For A Dude that only took the Drums casually for the early part of his Career, I thought his work on Kill ‘Em All was already pretty impressive. I just love how he drums on instances like the Four Horsemen verses (incorporating Double Kick), his fills and expressions during the bridge for Phantom Lord, His Groove overall in No Remorse, etc.
I dunno. Though amateurish as it may be, it felt like their was Some Personality and Spunk in his playing there, especially with how considerably tight he was with the band in the recording.

Hearing the songs played note for note as they were on the album is pretty boring, and most bands don't even try to do that. Like you I'm a drummer, I started playing around 15. I'm 50 now and have been getting back into playing after decades away from the instrument. I encourage you to put in the effort to learn your rudiments now while your young. I was young and in a hurry to learn how to play and I made the mistake of skipping my rudiment practice. BIG MISTAKE. Knowing how to play a proper double stroke roll, paraddidles, and even a clean, precise single stroke roll is ESSENTIAL to being a good drummer. While they can be tedious and difficult to master, rudiments are what makes the difference between a good drummer and an average, limited one. Take the time to learn them now and the possibilities are endless. I hope you get all the enjoyment in the world with your instrument.

Not every other guy/gal can pick an instrument and learn it himself/herself and immediately afterwards start recording and performing live in such a short period of time.
This guy indeed is really talented but he has actually never given much BucK about how he does with drumming or if he is one of the best drummers out there. He'd liked being lazy throughout some periods and lately he's been doing a very good job during live performances in the last 5-6 years.
He was heavily criticized in the early 2000's but as a 40 years old guy I remember how people were amazed with what he had done in Justice album and many drummers in that era around 90's were learning and practicing those songs just like rudiments.

I think Lars' attitude about drumming never changed, to his detriment. - Look I have nothing against him, he's even been a huge inspiration to me, but he really went downhill after like 2000 or something. - What's worse is that one thing he said not that long ago kinda explained it, and that's that he claims that he doesn't like to sit and practice by himself. That's not what you want to hear from either a "professional" "musician" or someone you look up to. It's just not a good thing and you can hear it in his playing. - That said, with all the criticism he's undoubtedly aware of, it kinda seems like he started practicing on his own in the recent few years, and he probably had to to keep up with all the stuff they play.
He once was one of the most influential drummers, basically "by accident" as he never took it so seriously, but that's quite amazing considering the stuff he put on some records. - They even got to the point where it became too complex, because they claimed they found the "Justice" material too convoluted to keep playing and got sick of it a month into touring with it. That's probably the reason they didn't play a lot of it, except for 'One' and "Harvester", for so long, and of course that "Justice Medley" on the "Roam Tour". - Lars even left out a fill that he would normally play twice on 'One' and then just stopped doing, if you didn't realize it, probably because he couldn't do it properly.
And I can attest to it, because I played those songs obsessively as a teenager, almost daily, both on guitar and drums, and they became a boring drag to play properly. And by that I mean because it takes so much energy for all the little details to get right and do it with power as well, and they're mostly long songs too, nothing under 5-6 minutes, some even 7-9 or whatever. - I started almost disliking those songs as a FAN, so I get where they were coming from.
But anyway, some people bash on these guys really hard for not playing well, and yea, they have their shortcomings, straight up, and they know they're not the best at their instruments. But they enjoy playing, and people should realize they're basically "self taught" and they just do what they like and can. - Again, it's still quite amazing what, at least at one point, they achieved for just being a bunch of teens and fans of other bands who just played away on their instruments.
By the way, by the sound of it, this interview is from the press for the "Black Album" right?... Cause he talks about how he simplified his drumming, which was indeed what he kept saying he wanted to do on that album, just to keep things more "groovy" and not as complex. - And I think his work on that is still fantastic. My favorite playing of his is probably on 'S&M', and also his stuff on 'St. Anger' is very creative, don't make any mistake about that. - I just don't care much for most stuff on the three albums after. On 'Death Magnetic', sure, but the two after... Nah, most of those doesn't do it for me anymore.

Love watching Metallica clips from the early years, brings back so many memories when I first heard them back in 85. I was 12 years old and the metal head kids called themselves "Stoners" lol. I had the long hair jean jacket and patches all over it and plaid shirt under it. Metallica turned me into metal head Stoner at 12 and still am a metal head Stoner at 50 LOL

For the fact that Lars admits he isn’t great…. James wasn’t sure if he wanted to be vocals or guitar….. Dave” so talented “ was booted…… Kirk arrives with his waah and arguably sucks compared to most…… and Cliff only joining the band if he was able to use his bass solo on album is one of the reasons Metallica is so intriguing. True underdogs creating a new genre of music 🎶 becoming the biggest metal band of all time is quite remarkable. I seriously love when people say that each individual in the band sucks. It’s like a championship sports team that has no good athletes. Metallica grabbed me in the mid 80s and they will always be my favorite band

People shit on Lars now due mostly to albums like Load and St. Anger but And Justice, for it's time, was a revolutionary metal drumming album. From the mix on the kit to the off time fills, to the speed of Dyers Eve, Lars had it all. Compared to other well known metal drummers of the '80's, there were very few who could hang with Lars at that time.

I don’t know if Lars gets enough credit for this, but there probably wouldn’t be any Metallica today were it not for him. It may be fair to say that Lars was the one who kept things from completely derailing after Cliff passed away. Lars takes a lot of criticism for different things, and perhaps rightly so. But nobody is perfect, and we have to remember that Master of Puppets really could’ve been the last we ever heard from Metallica.

AJFA is the only Metallica album I listen to anymore but if you watch any interview with the producer/engineer the drum parts are heavily edited together from multiple (hundreds) of takes. It's the modern day equivalent of fake UA-cam drummers editing footage together to appear far better than they are. I in no way think Lars is a bad drummer but let's call a spade a spade here.
