Scott, my dude. What a wonderful video. Not just then content, but all the hard work of producing something creative, vulnerable, and honest. So much of this hobby is only-hands and technique, it chases GW around like it they are waiting for senpai to notice. I really appreciate who you are choosing to be on UA-cam. A really nice video about the validation hell we often live in as UA-camrs.
It can feel like you live to serve the numbers, not the audience that got us here if we're to continue to grow, because that's the system that's been built for us to work in on UA-cam, it's really surprising how hard it is to *not* get sucked into the dopamine/stress machine that is YT studio.
The imposter syndrome can be VERY real but yeah dude you absolutely deserve to be where you are, always love your approach to and mindset around the hobby.

    @CrackerBDingus 9 місяців тому +2

I don’t know if this comment will even be read by Scott at this point. But I wanted to place a somewhat long and frankly unnecessary take about this video in particular.
It caused me to feel a thrill for painting again. I have never lost that feeling, but this reinvigorated it. Often I wonder if I could pull off painting full time, if I could develop the skills necessary by dropping everything else. But realistically, that’s entirely impossible even if only a dream. Like the majority of viewers and hobbyists, I have a full time job. Actually, I would say it’s closer to a 1.5x full time job where I average 45 hours a week and often up to 60 or 70 hours.
Many of the skills I have developed for painting translate into my job, and vice versa actually. I frequently think of drilling my barrels while I am attempting to place a screw perfectly in the center of a burr hole cover. I don’t paint while using a microscope, but I think about starting to because almost every surgery I am involved in uses a microscope. Unless a true emergency, tumor resections happen in a surgical spaces 3-4 inches large at maximum, and the most sensitive of touch is of utmost concern.
All this to say, you inspire me to progress and I yearn to attempt so. But fear I never will. For time.

Nobody is better at being you than you. Don’t allow altruism to damage you. Give The Virtue of Selfishness by Ayn Rand a read and see if you find the ideas in it helpful. Seeing people I value and admire suffer from guilt, imposter syndrome, and other pathologies, is heartbreaking. The good news is you can put a stop to it. Roman is right not to be primarily concerned with others and it’s a primary cause of his greatness.

Still I want to tell you how happy this video made me. First of all it is impressive from the editing quality. Really tons to learn here from you. Second, it is amazing from the personal growth that started with this trip. I remember the thoughts we talked about on "what video you want to create" from this trip and I can say you nailed it 100%. Be present is the main message. Be present in your life, in your love, in your job, in your passion, in your moments. This is a hard task with todays world as everything is aimed and programmed to distract us from being present. I see a great message in this video and I feel honoured to played a part of it. Hey man, just wanted to take a moment while I'm absorbing this video to relate on a couple things, that I think maybe will be nice to hear from a fan and someone who admires your art.
    - I am also on the cusp of my 30s, just beginning to learn maturity and develop a more sensible worldview. I definitely think I understand the headspace.
    - I agree that Roman is one of the best painters in the world! This is incredible for you, and you've worked INSANELY hard to earn it. I remember that time you uploaded a video everyday.
    - Just so you know, you are to me what Roman is to you. You TAUGHT me how to paint, but more than that, you taught me to think like an artist. Break down shapes and colors and wet a 💦moist💦 wet pallet for those c r e a m y blends. Etcetera.
I have spent HOURS painting minis and watching your videos thinking, "Hm. Man Scott is such a cool guy. It would be sick to get some Raising Canes tendies and paint with him."
So yeah. I get where you're coming from. I just wanted you to know that YOU are like Roman to someone.
I genuinely hope you do some videos on what you learned. Chromatic gray?? I'd be STOKED to see some stuff.
Anyway, thanks Scott. Thanks for encouraging me tooOOOO PAAINT MORRE MINIS

    That was a great Video!
I didn't meet in Person Roman yet, but I remember in 2012, when Ben Komets (back by the day another 'Massive Voodoo'-Guy) came as a judge and a tutor to a painting competition in our small Games Workshop in Potsdam (Germany). My Queek Headtaker made it to 2nd rank of abaout 8 competition entries.
I was new to painting and of course not quite skillful then.
But it had a huge impact on my motivation to meet Ben and realise that he is a human being just like me and you.
So I have a glimpse of an idea how you might have felt about Romans generous invitation.
Thank you so much for sharing your impressions and thoughts.
My son (9yrs) - sartup-mini-painter himself - was also quite impressed (unless he didn't understand anything of your overvoice).

I first found you @miniac back in 2018 when i stumbled upon your eavy metal series. You were the first painter that I watched every video i could and the first person i subscribed to on Patreon. You inspired me to try to have fun and understand that i was doing was actually art and not just an expensive paint by numbers for a wargame that i didn't even play. I cannot explain how big this was for my development as an artist. I still struggle to say that even to this day. After dropping and picking up painting multiple time over the course of 3 or so years, I would come back to your videos every single time and it would kick off another round of painting. Now I paint more than any other hobby now. I actually play Warhammer 40k and have a 4000+ point fully painted and all be it boringly based army of a homebrew Salamander successor chapter. I follow more painters on instagram than any other subject, including food. All because of you my dude. You inspired it. I know suffering from imposter syndrome is never something you really get over but you aren't an imposter to me!!! keep up the awesome work! Oh and i stopped using alcohol in my airbrush like you recommended all those years ago and I haven't had that dry tip issue ever since

Yay! There's the video I was hoping for ever since Roman told me you were about to visit. Fantastic guy! For me, his sessions are not necessarily about the stuff I learn (which I only use maybe 25% of in daily painting) but the inspiration afterwards for weeks.

Wow, very happy to see you had a great xp and got to taste a real Bavarian Butterbrezen. I last minute cancelled my trip to Monte cause my travel buddy‘s wife fell sick. (She’s well again) Seeing the level of the works presented I would have seriously shit my pants with my minis, which I‘m still proud of. Hope to make the journey in the coming years though.

This story is wild, dude, I wish YT had an option better than "like" 😅 I don't even get how awesome this is. I so wish I could get around to posting myself and my work outside of IG. And of course imagining anyone cares about my work. Kudos, dude! 🤘
I definitely get the imposter syndrome thing...in my group, I'm considered one of the best painters/ do the most kitbashes but I literally feel like a damn monkey gluing stuff to other stuff and loosely slapping paint on as an afterthought.
I don't want to put my IG on here because I don't want to be a shill...but let me know if it would be ok if you want to see my work.
As usual, great vidya, and happy to watch 🤘

Wow! So cool. I actually don't think I knew who he was but maybe I've seen his face before. I've really loved your videos since I started painting again during COVID lockdowns. By the looks of those magnificent pieces of art at Monty, I am definitely still using crayons and quite clearly have a looooooong way to go before getting even a quarter the way as good as you or them. But I'll keep trying - even when I get disheartened with all the paint that's dried out on my palette from lack of time to actually paint. Love your work mate.

Scott, I watch all your vids when they come out. Some might perform well in metrics(looking at warhammer stuff) while others perform well in message, like this one here. We all hit slumps, but you're so right in just taking the time to be present in what you do, and that includes miniature painting. We're always creating something beautiful in our hands when we pick up a brush and slather wet pigment all over the model. I know that in part thanks to people like you who are able to find your videos and inspiration from that, you play a huge role in their hobby journey. That said, I'd totally say what Roman is to you, a hobby hero, you fill that role for me dude. Keep on keeping on brother, and thank you so much for making this kind of content.

I didn't come here to feel feelings Q_Q In all truth, I aspire to eventually go to the event in Monte San Savino. I appreciate the knowledge the western painters have, but I feel like they're too stringent with their painting. Almost too cookie-cutter, if that makes sense. I came into mini painting with a love of art from my younger years (always drawing/painting, but never in depth concepts like colour theory), and I trip myself up every time I go to paint a mini because I feel like I have to adhere to these stringent ideas... But once I say "Fvck it, I'm just gonna paint," I do my best work not worrying about it. I appreciate these videos, and the same from Jon when he has these moments as well. I think there needs to be a push to get away from the formulaic way of thinking for painting minis.
Art painting is always going to be different than painting an army. I started my newbie journey on your page actually, and it's helped me grow and it's been amazing to watch you and your channel grow as well.

Greetings from Ulm (close to Augsburg): You had a Swabian Butterbrezel... soft and thicker on one end and thin and crispy on the other end. Bavarian Brezeln are a bland sameness of equal thickness all around that is utterly uneatable without beer. 😂

Hey Scott I have a challenge/experiment for you, you being a very talented miniature painter this should be easy. My challenge : pick up a classic kind of Airfix or Revell military model of either 1/72 or 1/48 scale and make something that instead of being a nice artistic interpretation of a thing to make it as photo realistic as humanly possible. It seems to me that many a hobbyists are under the notion that photo realism is unattainable yet the classic modelists have been doing it for decades as what drew me personally into Warhammer 40k for example was my humble classic kind of modeling hobby, and while everything is fine and dandy with being super artsy and solving everything in almost van gogh-ish surreal contrasts overlorded by the color wheel and non metallic metal techniques

beautiful stuff man, the entire video just oozes quality, so much so that i'd say you might be making things too hard on yourself, especially on a trip you could have gotten away with some on-the-scene vlog style commentary, would have been just as enjoyable for sure. And the stability of your close-up shots is really impressive. I thought you must be using a slider in the studio, but on the road it must all be gimbal work right? What's your secret, is it your steady painting hands keeping the camera that still. I struggle to get good stable close-ups even when i do 10 takes of a pre-built setup, you seem to just do them spontaneously on the spot :O

I'm not gonna lie it felt like some of your recent videos were hitting a lull there, and it did seem like you were painting in your comfort zone. There's nothing wrong with that at all! But it definitely started to seem like you had almost a "corporate" mentality, like you mentioned early in this video, like you were only painting for the UA-cam gods. Like you weren't creating for you anymore; painting or not.
This video is such an incredible shift that it sounds like you needed it, like you wanted this, that you did absolutely deserve this experience. This is a video I think we all needed as mini-painters; someone of stature--I mean that celebrity-wise, but you do seem like a really tall guy lol--hitting a bout of impostor syndrome literally across the table from someone like Roman, seeing a spark reignite not just here but through the social media stories as well, seeing a sense of inspiration come back almost as a tsunami.
This was an amazing video, and a reinvigorating one at that! Thank you.

Impostor syndrome is a bitch. I had it at work for a long time. The trick I used to solve it for myself is - whenever I would discredit myself in my head based on some outcome (in my case it could be not spotting a bug in my code, in your case a video that is not doing well) then I would try to look at it from 3rd person perspective and ask myself - would I think that guy is an impostor based on that outcome? Answer was always no, I repeated it many times and at some point, I don't even know when, it disappeared. I am now fully confident with what I do :)

Hey Scott, you are putting the bar quite high for Roman. I was already super happy that I got one of the seats for his upcoming workshop. As that one approaches excitement rises, but with your video it goes through roof.
I am really looking forward to this and enjoyed your video, your thoughts and I glad you have found a great friend and had such a wonderful time. In the past unthought I need a workshop to improve techniques. While I still hope I will, I just go there now to have a great time and just bath in Roman‘s charisma and take a dip from his spirit.
