Thank you for the video. Casey is my cousin, along with his brother (Nick) and my son Max played the piano in this one. He's now on guitar and keys. Needless to say they are my favorite band and appreciate your positive response.
I can't express to you how happy I am that you made this video! The Dear Hunter is my favorite band and you are the best vocal coach there is. I could watch you analyze Casey's voice all day. I'd love to see you watch him from his older to newer performances; he's gotten so much better throughout his career!!
Oh, interesting that you mention Andy! Manchester Orchestra and TDH have collabed before, and they have some live performances together. Andy is on most of the songs from The Red EP from The Color Spectrum
I've been a metalhead for the last several years and haven't ever bothered to look for TDH reactions, but seeing people check them out reminds me why I was so amazed when I found this band back in 2015. I still remember that first night I stumbled across their music, and even though I really feel like metal is my thing, I will always have a strong connection to this band. And Casey does do that scream stuff in some songs that sounds almost...metallic. I wonder if he's gotten better at it in recent years, because I do think I remember that he hurt his voice years ago when he relied more on brute force.
Someone probably already mentioned this, but Andy from Manchester Orchetsra is featured on two songs from The Dear Hunter’s Color Spectrum album cycle! I discovered MO through TDH!
AYE! I'm so happy you reviewed this dude, (side note, If you're wondering if Sam is a great coach, he absolutely is. Everyone who wants to get better 100% should take lessons from him. I've only had one lesson with him and I felt like I learned more in half an hour than I have in years. I'll be seeing you soon Sam! Thank you so much for reviewing this!)
Sooooo good, I love your commentary! You really make the nuance of understanding vocal technique digestible for someone like me who has no knowledge/training. I know I love this vocal style and you helped me understand why! Pretty cool
So excited that you’re covering them!! I would love to see more of your reaction to their other songs. He also played with the guy from Manchester orchestra
@@84jdgregory I was finally able to see them when they toured with Between the Buried and Me - another top favorite of mine. Suffice to say that was an incredible experience lol, CHURCH in the venue that night.
8:00 you use the word overdrive as a descriptive verb for what you are trying to express. From a guitarist standpoint, you were saying exactly what he did with his voice. You could’ve not more hit the nail on the head with that verbage.
You mentioned you might get into them if you discovered them at a different time. I still think they're worth trying out if you liked what you heard, you may be surprised at their variety. I'd say give their newest album Antimai a try, it's a masterpiece imo Thanks for the awesome analysis of Casey's vocals, made me notice things I hadn't before
Antimai might be tied for my favorite album from them. I never thought they could beat Act 2 (mainly for my memories with it and how it changed my life) but Antimai is perfect and beyond anything else they have ever done.
Great reaction, TDH are such a terrific band - I saw them live in London last week and Casey has such a powerful and consistent voice for live performances.
Sam!!! Funny you mentioned Andy from MO: there's some Dear Hunter songs that Andy plays and sings on! "We've Got a Score to Settle", among others. You should totally listen to more - it's a brilliant band/project.
@@savingpyro I know! I already got my ticket for the show in Atlanta. The first time I saw them was in 2007 or 08 on Halloween in Connecticut. Small intimate show, it was amazing.
5:04 the blend idea you're talking about, I think (as a very much know nothing vocal stylings person, but trying to learn) is highlighted best here: ua-cam.com/video/XevDayoSCh8/v-deo.htmlsi=OOnZI9pdrkrpH1_V This is probably the most shouty the dear hunter song, but there is still a lot of reaching high high high into the range.
Nice I love this guy's voice. I also appreciate how you said that it wasn't apajoritive that his voice is "yell-y." Some people have said they don't like J Hudson's singing because she's "just screaming." Ok, by that measure singing is "just speaking." I totally get when someone says, hey, that kinda music just isn't for me. (Unless it's Taylor, then they're just wrong, obviously. ;p) But what I don't get is the need that some people have to say something isn't "good" if it isn't something they like. I do personally like how many dimensions this singer has to his voice. Wow.
Sam, You are the most integrity filled, knowledgeable, and respectful vocalist to conduct “reaction” videos We in Australia are currently getting behind one of our favourites, who we call, “The Voice”. John Farnham. He is currently recovering from mouth cancer and there are so many “reaction” videos out there now by reactors. It would be amazing for us, as Australians, to see you do one - with your level of knowledge and kindness. You are a lot like John in that way. It is my understanding that his family are being sent some of the reaction videos to support him, as he sees the wonderful reactions he is getting. It would be wonderful for them - and us - to hear your thoughts of this VOICE! ❤ Could we recommend John Farnham’s version of “Help” (A Beatles cover/arrangement) with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Hey Sam, more than anyone before I am super curious to hear what you think of the singer of the nicotine dolls. The first time ever going to know it's like wow really cool voice. The more I hear his voice the more it seems like an effect and that he's straining his voice to make it happen. Since you were the pro I was very curious to see what you think of his unique voice. Hope you see this. Thanks
Hey Sam, I really enjoy your analysis! I found a guy who is using yodeling elements in his music and I'd like to know how this works. Autoheart - The Sailor Song (Original) - Ont' Sofa Gibson Sessions If you could look into it, I'd appreciate it! Best Greetings from Germany Clara
It's so wild that you mentioned that Casey reminds you of Dustin, I first got to see them live when they opened for Thrice back in 2009! They're both such talented vocalists, couldn't agree more ^_^
Thank you for the video. Casey is my cousin, along with his brother (Nick) and my son Max played the piano in this one. He's now on guitar and keys. Needless to say they are my favorite band and appreciate your positive response.
That's badass!
Never thought I'd find one of Casey's relatives in a comment section. I thank your family for my favorite band!

@09:57 "If I was interviewing him".... now this is something I would love to watch. You interviewing awesome singers.
So happy to see The Dear Hunter on your channel, they're absolutely my favorite band. Hope to see more of Casey's singing here in the future!

The Dear Hunter is the most talented band working today
Saw them before lockdown with a split acoustic/full band set and along with writing great music, they're also just an incredible live band
Saw them back in like 2012 at sxsw at a free show and everyone there was like "WTF?" It was a super powerful show.

Dude, Antimai is so good. I didn't think I'd like a more poppy funk approach, but I absolutely love it.
@@TheWickedEnd2012 I'm in the same boat. It's not something I'd think I'd like but damn did they work their magic and I love it lol

No way! The Dear Hunter! I've only met one person in my personal life who knows of them.
DYING, was thinking, "Reminds me of Dustin Kensrue, would be cool to see Sam analyze him -" LOL
When I met Casey in person and drew that comparison to him, he directed me to the band "Cave In." Great band that has similar vocal qualities.
Great reaction, TDH are such a terrific band - I saw them live in London last week and Casey has such a powerful and consistent voice for live performances.

Check out The Dear Hunter's Red EP (part of the masterful color spectrum project) because Andy Hull performed it with them in studio!
Hell yeah, been trying to get people to react to this for years
yes! Can't wait to watch as soon as I finish frantically refreshing the weather radar for the next hour or so while this storm passes.
Omg The Dear Hunter! wow haha, Home is a great one too!
You need to deep dive on casey cresenzo and the dear hunter and I don't just say that because I've been a fan for maybe 20 years give or take
20 year tour is this year! I'm hoping to go. I caught their last couple and they always deliver.

"there's no mortality in sounds," is a moral claim.
