So a bit of a correction. The CV-41 USS Midway (first of three Midway class carriers) that is in San Diego, was launched March 20th 1945 and commissioned September 10th 1945 and never participated in WW2. The one that was originally named after the Battle of Midway, it was naming practice then to largely name carriers after US battles at this time, was the escort carrier CVE-63 USS St. Lo which was renamed from USS Midway after the latter ship was laid down. In something of an ironic twist given the sailor belief that it is bad luck to rename a ship. The USS St. Lo would be sank in the Battle of Samar during the Philippine Islands campaign in late 1944 by a kamikaze attack immediately following Samar which has the distinction of being the single most lopsided naval battle in US naval history, if not world history of task force 77.4.3 (Taffy 3) vs the Japanese Center Force. Six escort carriers, three destroyers, and four destroyer escorts against three battleships, six heavy cruisers, two light cruisers, and 11 destroyers; which included the IJN Yamato that out weighed every ship in Taffy 3 combined ua-cam.com/video/4AdcvDiA3lE/v-deo.html an excellent video on the battle by Drachinifel
Yes, and a bit of a slide puzzle having to manage the re-arming and refueling of aircraft, assembling aircraft in preparation of launching and keeping the deck clear enough for aircraft that need to land. And don't have all those bombs and fuel out when you get hit with anything explosive....
Yes, but Nagumo already knew that surprise was lost hours before the battle even started. An American submarine was foolish enough to reveal itself & attempt to attack the Kido Butai. The sub was chased off by an escorting destroyer.
@@6th_Army Yeah but said destroyer led Enterprise dive bombers right to the Japanese carriers. Also the battle had technically already started at that point.

I recently went to see the Yorktown, that is definitely true. They had drawn large black circle outlines on spots that the bombs had destroyed, and I counted at least 5 outlines.
If they are gonna do a sing about a US navy ship it should be the Enterprise. The ship was unsinkable, the Japanese thought they had sunk it about five times and then it would just reappear in a different part of the Pacific where the Japanese would then think they had sunk it until it would reappear. The ship survived the war which is pretty impressive considering only two other US carriers survived from those that had been in service before the war.
There was practically a mutiny when the Grey Ghost's heir was retired from service without the next heir being designated. Citizens writing the CNO literally filled his office with letters saying the fleet simply isn't the fleet without an Enterprise in service.
To be fair the Japanese literally reported sinking over 100 US fleet carriers in the war. There were only about 35 throughout! The reason for this is both japanese mistaking sunk escort carriers and resupply barges for fleet carriers but also the superb us damage control crews. If a Kate hits a fleet carrier with a torpedo its pilot is gonna think it just scored a mortal blow. But in reality, a little repair time back at the anchorage and the carrier will be back in service.
"Enterprise vs Japan" Indy barely scratched the surface on how lucky the US Navy was that day, like how the dive bombers followed a destroyer who had been hunting the Nautilus back to their fleet, to how because of the sacrifice of the Devastators the A6M's were way too low when the SBD's struck, and about before this about Yorktown's rapid repairs at Pearl.
@@Rainbowhotpocket There's an excellent book called "Pacific Crucible," which talks about how lessons learned from Pearl Harbor influenced the US Navy, and paved the way for victory. Lessons like massively increasing AA, damage control, and the superiority of the aircraft carrier over the battleship. Battleship South Dakota, cruisers Northampton, and Salt Lake City did their job well.

Slight correction: torpedo bombers and dive bombers were both effective against carriers. Nagumo's problem was the torpedo bombers doubled as land attack planes (but of course using bombs instead of torpedoes) and the dive bombers often used different bombs against land targets than ships. So if he was going to arm his planes to attack ships (of any kind) they needed completely different armament than if he was going to attack Midway again. Midway's runway was still operational after the first Japanese air strike, and planes from Midway had been attacking the Japanese all morning (albeit ineffectively) even before the futile torpedo bomber attacks from the US carriers.
Now we only need: Primo Victoria Attack of the Deadmen Art of War Winged Hussars - The Meme song to meme all songs Night Witches - Maybe a Halloween special? Get it? Cause witches... I can already see Indy dressed up as a witch for this episode.
For anyone who sees this: the channel Montemayor has a video about Midway from the Japanese pov. Highly recommend it. Hopefully the second part comes out soon
USS North Carolina is in Wilmington, NC. If you decide, the ship served in the entirety of the American involvement in the Pacific and was the most decorated US Battleship of the war. I believe this places it at 4th or 5th most decorated US Battleship.
Kyle Jordan Gaming the men working in the bowels of the ships that were cooked alive most certainly did not start anything. Don’t blame the common sailor for the fault of the admirals who attacked us.
A song about the B-26 Marauder known as Flak-Bait. Flak-Bait survived 207 combat missions, which is more than any other American plane I WWII. The mission count amounts to 700 plus hours of combat. The best part is that she's still around
My Grandfather fought in and survived the battle of Midway. My family would tell me stories he told them about his life in the Navy. Though he never shared his experience during the battle of Midway to anyone. I've always wondered what he saw to make him shutdown when being asked about it.
It's so bad that people think that barely any resistance when the japanese invaded the Pacific. But the battling bastards of bataan put up a great fight, holding out for 3 months against low supplies and being surrounded
I'm gonna butt in late, but you are exactly right. Had the Japanese faced troops that had the same equipment/supplies as the ones getting funneled to other theatres, the Japanese wouldn't even have those early successes to their name.
@@jawwer00 Actually BECAUSE the Americans retreated to Bataan (after Macarthur sacrificed their supplies on the beaches), they allowed the Japanese to speed up their timetable across the Pacific. As well, the Japanese left a lone Independent Brigade of 8,000 troops to keep an eye on 30,000 American and their commonwealth forces after the Japanese withdraw their division. And the US had gone 40+ years of their own doctrine and had massively reinforced the Philippines on Macarthur. whims.
Just a few thing to note, first Admiral Fletcher was in command of the engagement Spruance was only in command of Halsey’s task force which was Enterprise and Hornet. Second the Yorktown’s planes took out the Soryu. The Enterprise was responsible for savaging Kaga and Best took out the Akagi.
00:06 whadayamean ”often do songs about naval warfare”? You’ve got this one, Bismarck and Wolfpack and that’s it. You even missed Jutland on the last album.
This is the battle that heralded the end of the domination of battleships in naval warfare and the rise of the importance of the carriers in their place. Two mighty fleets fighting an entire battle without either fleet ever coming into visual range of each other, fighting solely using their planes against the enemy.
The song which introduced me to Sabaton. I was just watching random videos when I stumbled upon this song and loved it. Bismarck made a fan but Midway started it. Thanks for telling the story of how we the United States of America turned the war around USS Enterprise CV-6 song when?
“Midway” has had such a huge impact on me, anytime I even hear the word “midway” (not even in reference to the islands) I have to shout it. And it brings me immense joy
We could really use a song about the USS Texas BB-35. A Dreadnought that survived both WW1 and WW2, and assisted in the D-Day landings, where she purposefully took on water to increase the firing angle of her guns to hit land targets.
Future Naval themed song suggestions: -The last stand of Taffey 3. Literally perfect material. A bunch of destroyers, destroyer escorts, and escort carriers against a massive task force led by Kongo and Yamato where the DDs and DEs rushed them like the mad lads they were. And they managed to convince those mighty battleships to turn away and flee. -The Naval Battle of Jutland. Its a major historical battle so why not? -The Naval Battles of Guadalcanal, especially on Iron Bottom Sound. Crazy night actions, ships taking horrendous beatings, USS Laffey (DD-459) rushing the battleship Hiei and coming within 20 feet of her as well as killing her Captain before sinking in an insane last stand of her own... There's a lot to work with there. -The Battle of Leyte Gulf where the first kamikazes appeared. And I cant think of any more but more suggestions are welcome.
The battle of Trafalgar? Where Napoleon's Navy was utterly destroyed. It was Horatio Nelson's final battle. As he was shot during it, and died after he heard of the Royal Navy's Victory. John Paul Jones's victory against the Serapis. John Paul Jones would famously shout "I HAVE NOT YET BEGUN TO FIGHT!"
I'd like to divide Guadalcanal into 4 parts (Savo Island, Eastern Solomons, First Guadalcanal, Second Guadalcanal). Same goes for Leyte Gulf (Samar, Cape Engaño, Sibuyan Sea, and Surigao Strait, with the last one portrayed from Shigure's perspective)
So Pär like naval stuff? So you're saying there is actually a chance I'll eventually get my song about John Paul Jones raid on Whitehaven and the last stand of Taffy 3?!
Ah, the Battle of Midway. The battle where LCDR Wade McClusky, LCDR Max Leslie, and LT Dick Best completely bushwhacked three of six attackers of Pearl Harbor. Shame about the Yorktown. So close keeping her afloat.
The USS Jeremiah O’Brien is going out for a cruise this weekend. it’s the last functioning merchant marine vessel from WWII and since your going to be in san Francisco this weekend I think sabaton would really enjoy it. It’s a great museum ship and it is interesting to see the less glamorous parts of the navy.
I really love this song because of that amazing part ''Far from shore, a pacific War! bombs are falling from the skies Its a bombrun day, it the naval way! A bloodred sun is on the rise'' I love it so much omg this is one of the sabaton songs which makes me tear up
If you have the time, I would really reccomend montemayor's 40 min video about midway. It's only part 1 and no part 2 is released yet afaik, but it's a great look at the battle moment by moment
If you're going to do another song about another Singular ship? You need to do one to CV-6 Enterprise. The Grey Ghost's story reads like a thriller and her service history is legendary In regards to the sheer amount of participation in the Pacific war she had seen, Having an involvement from Pearl Harbor to the final months of the war. Surviving everything the Japanese Navy threw her way. IF only efforts to turn her into a museum could've succeeded...
TheTaintedWisdom - Well, Joakim said they keep a list of song concepts they’re working on- there’s over 10,000 left. He sounded dead serious. I’d believe it...
In November (or December, around that time) of 2019 I watched the movie midway. I then wanted to re-see some clips so I searched it up on yt. Hard to find some as it was new in the cinema's but after not so long of searching I found this song. Welp, now Sabaton is my favourite music to listen to, all because of this song introducing me. Thanks for the music, keep it up
Holy crap some of the footage is amazing. Finding videos of TBD Devastators and SB2U Vindicators is really rare since they were pretty much retired after Midway.
When you love Warships you should visit the historical Dockyards in Portsmouth, England. The HMS Victory lies there, the second most famous warship of all time (after the Bismarck) Also there is a small Gunship, that served in the Battle of Gallipoli. Inside of that Gunship they show a short documentary about the Battle of Gallipoli and I feld like your song whould have perfectly fit in there
Again, I really dig that Indy went into a quite detailed description of the battle, however, I shivered meanwhile as my deepest fear is burning alive...but, we need reminders again and again about how messy war can be. Also, sorry Pär, but I can't imagine you killing everybody in sight. 😀 (And how nice it is from Indy he allowed you to use one of his WW2 phones. 😛 )
Ágnes Keresztury i watched Dunkirk in Cinemas, and there’s a bit when a destroyer gets torpedoed and leaks fuel into the water. I’ll spare you the details, but it made me shiver.
13:36, When you're in Seattle in a few days here, maybe you can take the ferry across Puget Sound and visit the USS Turner Joy museum ship in Bremerton- its a Forest Sherman class Vietnam era destroyer that fired the first and last shots of all warships in Vietnam. It was also involved in the Gulf Of Tonkin incident.
What Sabaton's next album should be: all about naval warfare Track listing?: 1. Spanish Armada decimation 2. Pearl Harbor 3. Battle of Trafalger (The Royal Navy's "finest hour") 4. Battle of Leyte Gulf/Taffy 3's miracle charge 5. Battle of Jutland Sea (WW1) 6. Battle of Tsushima (from the Russian-Japanese War in 1905) 7. Battle of Salamis (2nd Greco-Persian War) 8. Iron Bottom Sound (The Guadalcanal Campaign, which had 3 naval battles: Eastern Solomons, Santa Cruz, and Gaudalcanal) 9. The Graf Spee Add Bismarck as a bonus track Please add more if I missed something, there's plenty of content
8:30 Kaga (and Akagi) was sunk by planes from USS Enterprise, Soryu was hit by USS Yorktown bombers. 11:40 Well, it is not so simple. Enterprise send that planes: hers, planes from Yorktown (air group VB-3) that landed on Enterprise's deck, and to this force joined bombers from USS Hornet and Midway. On Hiryu attacked planes under command of Earl Gallaher, other planes decided to go after other ships of enemy's fleet. So, USS Enterprise - one ship - sunk in one day three aircraft carriers and change the tide of war.
The best part is how an American submarine indirectly caused it by distracting a Japanese Destroyer long enough to be able to lead the Enterprise dive bombers to the carriers
the USS Enterprise the most decorated us navy ship in WW2 nicknamed the grey ghost and the Lucky E she fought in more battles then any other ship and her crew never gave up even when She was damaged they kept fighting and never stopped.
Excellent work as always but I wish you had credited Yamaguchi at 10:55. The shell-shocked Nagumo had been dragged into a destroyer and was out of the picture for a while. It was admiral Yamaguchi who made the decision to keep striking, and ultimately go down with his ship when the Hiryu was sunk. Side note, when planning to assassinate Yamamoto, the US had only one concern - what if Yamamoto was replaced by an even better leader? They decided that since Yamaguchi was already dead at Midway, there was no one else of Yamamoto's caliber to replace him.
Small Correction that isn't really a problem at 6:01 - 6:10 You can actually use dive bombers against destroyers but it is preferable that they carry HE bombs. For the carriers you can use HE or AP depending on the type of deck that the enemy ships carry. Torpedo squads can also fit very great for the role of attacking the carriers.
If Pär and the band get a chance, there's tours of the USS Torsk in Baltimore, which isn't that far from Silver Spring. There's also the USS Constellation, the USCGC Taney, and the S.S. John W. Brown, a fully functioning Liberty Ship that will occasionally take cruises, although the next one isn't until May.
If y’all like visiting old warship museums then you should visit the USS Yorktown in Charleston, SC. They renamed another aircraft carrier Yorktown in honor of the original and it saw service throughout the rest of WWII. Also you should look up the USS Laffy aka the ship that wouldn’t die
Wasn't Warspite one of the RNs battleships that sunk so many enemy ships but received such little damage in return? It's definitely Britian's USS Enterprise
I am always shocked at the fact, that basically all the damage done to the Japanese ships. Was done by the Dauntless Dive Bombers towards the end of the Battle...!!!
Back when I was in the Army ('85 to '88), I took a shine to military history courtesy of a roommate, especially naval battles. In the PX, there were usually paperbacks of different eras and battles. One book I bought, and I wish I still had it or remembered the title, was an account of the Battle of Midway from the Japanese perspective from two officers who were there and also part of the planning. The upshot of the book was basically they suffered from victory disease, believing they couldn't lose. It was a very interesting read and I wish I still had the book. I'll have to see if google can help with finding that book.
I call what they do historical heavy metal. Great band and excellent historians in their own way. Thanks men of Sabaton. God bless you. Please come to Tallahassee or nearby.
i had a family member who served on the USS Yorktown, if im not mistaken the newer one after the one that got sunk at the battle of Midway, even though this wasnt the one i still cried ;-;

I wish the song had an extend version, so I wouldn't have press replay button so often.
You can turn on loop btw
The Battle of Midway was the First Battle I ever did a history report on. And is still a battle I'm fascinated by to this day
Happy to hear that!
My grandfather was in the Navy, from what I was told, this was his first active battle. Thank you for this song, it always keeps him in my mind!

When you guys are around in Houston, there is a battleship known as the USS TEXAS, as well as a sub not to far off in Galveston known as the Seawolf.
Last I heard the Texas was down for repairs, or did I miss something. We got USS Iowa down here in Long Beach.

I know this is late, but everything I see shows her second only to new Jersey. Not bad for her only fighting in WWII
and I learned another part of History.
Sabaton is fantastic!
Those poor bastards died some of the most painful deaths imaginable.
Yeah. :/
I mean, they started it, tho... Just saying...
Kyle Jordan Gaming the men working in the bowels of the ships that were cooked alive most certainly did not start anything. Don’t blame the common sailor for the fault of the admirals who attacked us.
That's nothing compared to the Asian countries they've murdered and raped.

@@jawwer00
Actually BECAUSE the Americans retreated to Bataan (after Macarthur sacrificed their supplies on the beaches), they allowed the Japanese to speed up their timetable across the Pacific.
@@Triflame. Kinda... eh, a bit.

I am not sure Jutland would be worth writing about.
The war in the Pacific was just one big "they had us in the first half not gonna lie" XD
This is the battle that heralded the end of the domination of battleships in naval warfare and the rise of the importance of the carriers in their place. Two mighty fleets fighting an entire battle without either fleet ever coming into visual range of each other, fighting solely using their planes against the enemy.
Battleships were still useful for bombarding coasts
The song which introduced me to Sabaton. I was just watching random videos when I stumbled upon this song and loved it. Bismarck made a fan but Midway started it. Thanks for telling the story of how we the United States of America turned the war around
USS Enterprise CV-6 song when?
Thanks! You're welcome!
“Midway” has had such a huge impact on me, anytime I even hear the word “midway” (not even in reference to the islands) I have to shout it. And it brings me immense joy
Amazing episode. Part of me wishes you went into more detail but then it would turn into a Drachnifel 5 min. guide...
Drachinifel is amazing
5 min = 20 in Drach world
Obviously drach is using nautical minutes
We could really use a song about the USS Texas BB-35. A Dreadnought that survived both WW1 and WW2, and assisted in the D-Day landings, where she purposefully took on water to increase the firing angle of her guns to hit land targets.
She was the only US Ship to hit it's targets during the opening bombardment
Future Naval themed song suggestions:
-The last stand of Taffey 3.
5:00 Ah the 3 Yorktown aircraft carriers.
Me, an Azur Lane fan: Midway Atoll missions. *crys*
Best took out Akagi with one bomb
The USS Jeremiah O’Brien is going out for a cruise this weekend. it’s the last functioning merchant marine vessel from WWII and since your going to be in san Francisco this weekend I think sabaton would really enjoy it. It’s a great museum ship and it is interesting to see the less glamorous parts of the navy.
That ship was built in my hometown.
I really love this song because of that amazing part ''Far from shore, a pacific War!
bombs are falling from the skies Its a bombrun day, it the naval way! A bloodred sun is on the rise'' I love it so much omg this is one of the sabaton songs which makes me tear up
The Japanese at Pearl Harbor: yay we took down most of America’s fleet
America: ya’ll bon your last zai
If you have the time, I would really reccomend montemayor's 40 min video about midway. It's only part 1 and no part 2 is released yet afaik, but it's a great look at the battle moment by moment
I vouch for this
Its pretty good
Have you seen Battle 360 about Midway?
If you're going to do another song about another Singular ship? You need to do one to CV-6 Enterprise. The Grey Ghost's story reads like a thriller and her service history is legendary In regards to the sheer amount of participation in the Pacific war she had seen, Having an involvement from Pearl Harbor to the final months of the war. Surviving everything the Japanese Navy threw her way. IF only efforts to turn her into a museum could've succeeded...
14:57 - How? HOW?! No, seriously: *HOW?!?*
How does a Sabaton song about Admiral Yi Sun-sin and/or his naval battles *not* exist?!?
Because you haven't emailed them a write up yet!
Now that i think Admiral Yi was the father of all Navy! Sabaton should definitely do a song about him!

Thanks for the music, keep it up
Man, I would love to see a complete videoclip like the one playing in the video, because it synchs really well
My wife and I LOVED you in Dallas at The House of Blues!!! Thank you Sabaton!!!
Holy crap some of the footage is amazing. Finding videos of TBD Devastators and SB2U Vindicators is really rare since they were pretty much retired after Midway.
When you love Warships you should visit the historical Dockyards in Portsmouth, England.
The HMS Victory lies there, the second most famous warship of all time (after the Bismarck)
Also there is a small Gunship, that served in the Battle of Gallipoli.
Inside of that Gunship they show a short documentary about the Battle of Gallipoli and I feld like your song whould have perfectly fit in there
Honestly, it's a shame Britian scrapped every RN vessel besides Belfast. I wish they kept KGV or maybe Warspite
Just yesterday watched Midway movie. Thanks for background information. 👌

What a perfect day to start off with Sabaton
One of my all-time favourite songs! Wish you would play it live more often!
Akagi: *smug fox noises*
E: Owari da!
16:12 legendary
the USS Enterprise the most decorated us navy ship in WW2 nicknamed the grey ghost and the Lucky E she fought in more battles then any other ship and her crew never gave up even when She was damaged they kept fighting and never stopped.
The Japanese thought they sunk Lucky E multiple times. They must've lost their shit when Enterprise showed up at Midway
And the galloping ghost
Excellent work as always but I wish you had credited Yamaguchi at 10:55. The shell-shocked Nagumo had been dragged into a destroyer and was out of the picture for a while. It was admiral Yamaguchi who made the decision to keep striking, and ultimately go down with his ship when the Hiryu was sunk.
Side note, when planning to assassinate Yamamoto, the US had only one concern - what if Yamamoto was replaced by an even better leader? They decided that since Yamaguchi was already dead at Midway, there was no one else of Yamamoto's caliber to replace him.
3:16
Is that a Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World reference?
Small Correction that isn't really a problem at 6:01 - 6:10
You can actually use dive bombers against destroyers but it is preferable that they carry HE bombs.
For the carriers you can use HE or AP depending on the type of deck that the enemy ships carry.
Torpedo squads can also fit very great for the role of attacking the carriers.
Cool that you guys went to the USS New Jersey, the state I live in
If Pär and the band get a chance, there's tours of the USS Torsk in Baltimore, which isn't that far from Silver Spring. There's also the USS Constellation, the USCGC Taney, and the S.S. John W. Brown, a fully functioning Liberty Ship that will occasionally take cruises, although the next one isn't until May.
The USS Pampanito is also in San Francisco right at Fisherman's Wharf, she's a lovely submarine.

You should make a song about HMS Warspite Pls
She isnt well known compared to alot of ships yet she did so much for Britain
Pls consider
Wasn't Warspite one of the RNs battleships that sunk so many enemy ships but received such little damage in return? It's definitely Britian's USS Enterprise

CVE Midway (St Lo) is waving
I am always shocked at the fact, that basically all the damage done to the Japanese ships. Was done by the Dauntless Dive Bombers towards the end of the Battle...!!!
Well, the first 3 carriers were hit at the 10:20 attack. So very early in the American attack.
