Have You Ever Wondered Why an Elephant Flaps its Ears?

- Watch to find out more about the different reasons an elephant flaps its ears. We share some remarkable footage of the rescued herd to show you why elephants flap their ears both to keep cool and as reaction to excitement, surprise or stress, and to potential threats.
Come along, and see why these animals are so well adapted to their environment and how they act with a nurturing instinct when coming across Khanyisa in the bush one day, during the early integration of her into the herd in 2020. The surprise of seeing her creates quite the activity among all the elephants!

An African elephant’s giant flappers are laced with a network of veins and capillaries that can also be used for identification. If you’re up close and in just the right light the intricate pattern is easily visible, but there is a far more important reason that these blood transporting vessels are so close to the surface.
The radiator of a motor car works by passing engine coolant through thin metal fins, which allows the heat generated by the engine to flow to the outside air moving past the radiator and a fan assists by kicking into action when necessary. A thermostat controls the flow of the coolant.
Amazingly, this is almost exactly the modus operandi employed by an elephant using blood in place of antifreeze coolant. By flapping those giant mud-covered ears and controlling the blood flow through them, elephants can significantly reduce their body temperature, reportedly by up to 9 degrees centigrade.
According to Elephant Voices, a respected organisation with a wealth of collected elephant research, African elephants use their ears to gesticulate. Where we might square or shrug our shoulders or wave our arms about an elephant would use any of a number of ‘ear gestures’. Ear-spreading, ear-flattening, ear-folding, ear-stiffening and rapid ear-flapping, are all used singly or in combination to signify either aggression or in greeting and bonding situations.
The ear-flap-slide causes the ears to make a rasping sound as they rub downward against the shoulders and are often used as elephant indicators to signify a change in direction while a loud ear-slap can be a sign of annoyance, a bit like a child stamping its foot. Males in musth use their ears to waft their odour toward other elephants. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
This whole HERD running in protection mode. Ears flapping until they realized Khaynisa was safe. Once again a Great informative video.❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❤️
Trumpeting is a "call to arms" "we need help! Come quick!the babies here!" I love these sweet creatures!
That was amazing to watch. You guys must have nerves of steel to stand your ground with the herd racing to see what’s happening. They are so protective. Thank you for this video.
I immediately saved this to my playlist Have you ever wondered. I save all the teaching videos so that I can look back at the lessons that have been shown on the many aspects of this wonderful family.
Whoa, that was tense. I don't want them angry.
THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING AND REMARKABLE VIDEOS EVER!!! There is so much going on here!! You will witness 1 protection 2 alertness 3 unity 4 a formidable bond 5 Bravery... etc... And that's just a few off the top of my head!! Man on Man what a BLESSING to have people like ADINE,. GodKnows, Reply and All the other beautiful HERD FAMILY!! (There is NO lack of gratitude if I fail to mention all the names!!! GOD BLESS THIS WONDERFUL PLANET!!!💕🐘💯
There is an even more amazing video with Adine and carers walking Khanyisa to the herd in the bush and the herd run toward them with even greater excitement and emotional display. It’s one of my favorites. It was posted a year ago and is titled “Albino Baby Elephant Khanyisa’s Incredibly Emotional Greeting by the Jabulani herd.”
@@palmaleestephens1906 do you know what the video is called? I would love to find it and watch it.
@@keyappaloosa7989 Yes, I edited my post above to give the title.🤗
@@palmaleestephens1906 thank you so much, I'll look it up immediately!!! 💕💕 My fellow Ellie lover! 😘👍🏾😘
@@terryford7459 You are welcome! Enjoy!😀
Remarkable educational experience. I could have watch for hours but glad the stress ended soon. They are just so amazing. I do not know another word to describe the love and protection and awareness. They all reacted and assessed the situation and then calmed down. My learning experience is off the charts. Wow. Loved seeing this reaction.
The scene with Khanyisa between Limpopo's legs was sweet. Oh, that tusk groove was deep.
Watching Khanyisa meet up with the Herd in the bush & their reactions was breathtaking. It's great to learn about the elephant's via the videos. Thank you ❤️🐘
What an amazing thing to watch: their excitement and pure pleasure at unexpectedly seeing baby Khanyisa out in the bush with them. These are some beautiful, wonderful, and amazing beings. Their greeting to the baby is the most awesome thing I have seen in a very long time!
Wow! I’ve never seen this before! Such excitement and confusion. Another amazing vlog of the herd by HERD. Bubi actually seemed calmer than Lundi. I guess it’s not a good idea to surprise elephants!❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦
What a remarkable demonstration of ele surprise and protection! Watching those giants run toward Khanyisa was quite awe inspiring! There's so much to learn about the meaning of various ear flappings and ele emotions. Great video!🙏♥️♥️♥️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘
Knew about the ears but didn't know about the sweat glands above the toenails. Very interesting!
It still hurts to see the pretty pink Princess's scars 💘 😢 🐘
I certainly agree!😢
That last scene with Khanyisa was amazing!! Considering the raucous created by the rest of the herd, she seemed remarkably calm. Elephants are extremely protective of their herd & I guess this herd are especially so, given the background of alot of them. The peace & calm after all the excitement was amazing too 🥰❤🙏🐘
Oh I love how they rally round the little pink one! Such a heartwarming and fascinating show of protection and love! Thanks for sharing!
The description under the video was very informative as always.Thank You 😊
If we humans only protected our children like elephants protect there's what a wonderful world we'd have🐘🐘🐘🙏💕
What a wonderful way to teach us to know more about these wonderful and mighty beings. Thank you for this. I have only recently discovered HERD and in a short period of time, I have learned so many things I had no idea of about elephants, just by watching your videos and reading your blog. Thank you for all your lovely commitment to nature.
Amazing video 🥰 the trunk interaction in the first clip was adorable and the alert mode in the second clip is powerful. That would have been extremely dangerous if the carers didn't have an incredible amount of trust established.
Just...incredible! Beautiful animals!
I love learning about the elephants, I learned so much from you
Love that they protect Khanyisa ❤️
OMG!! What an awesome video this was. The elephants come to greeting our sweet little Khanysa and then protect her and then end up calming down by the voice and request from Adine their human mom.😊🐘❤️ I know they would never want to hurt Adine and take command really great too. I knew about the ears flapping to keep cool in the very hot temps but I actually didn’t know they did more then that which was so awesome to learn. Adine, thank you so much for loving these precious giants and the little ones too.❤️🙏🏻🥰🐘 It’s because of you and your Carers as to why these elephants are so gentle and loving creatures. Thanks again and God bless you always. Sue M. (Florida, USA)❤️🙏🏻🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🥰🌴🌸😘👼❌⭕️❌⭕️
The Herd was ready to fight anyone who mess with baby K. 💕
It is just amazing to be in America, & experience the herds daily activities & adventures, & learn about them as if we were there, observing from a tour bus. Actually, its like standing beside you awesome guys & the wonderful herd❣️ Via video, no less! I love to learn. It is a blessing to be able to experince this. No cost to me! I could never afford a trip there. Thank - you all so very much❣️Donating is a pleasure, & I'm honored to be a part of the Herd❣️💞 🐘🐘🐘👨👩👦👦👩👦👫🫂
I didn't know an elephants ears were so important for so many reasons... temperature control as well...was fascinating...thank you for the video and the information ❤️
Amazing how the ellies all calm down immediately around Adine.
I love Khanyisa, and the Herd. Who wouldn't?
Omg, this is a reminder that ele’s can be very big & scary! I watched them on the television for years but when I went to 3 African countries on elephant safaris, I was surprised to find that I was afraid! Once, two elephants came out of the dense forest after midnight & the teenager was interested in our tent. Another visit to Africa & they were crossing in front of us while rumbling-I thought a plane was crashing b/c they were so loud! The last trip I was alone & a HUGE (I am tall but I fit underneath him) male ele, with temporal secretions was eating marula fruits around my tent. I stood in the back of the tent & shook like a little girl! No one could see this b/c there were only 3 other people on that safari but they were asleep in their tents!
5:20 this is the first time seeing Sebakwe up close and facing towards you, even the most dominant Bull is reassuring you everything's alright
I love the protection the herd provides.
‼️🌷AWESOME VID CONTENT🌷‼️
Gosh their speed & solidarity prove they care, they love & ARE a legit
Solid FAMILY unit‼️💕🙏
I love the key words, “easy - good boy - good girl- w/names” Jabulani looked SO magnificent coming over as Ms. Tokwe‼️ How special & lovely…Pretty neat special time for lil Khanisa- she must’ve been overflowing with the feeling of special & acceptance. Xander had Sebakwe calmed quickly and Adine- you have made your Dad Proud as he watched smiling from Heavens Highest hill. May God Bless Every single one of you at Herd. RESPECT my Sister🕊😘
My love for Elephants began many years ago I for the first time heard the story of Lawrence Anthony - The Elephant Whisperer. It was about his passing. Two herds of elephants that he had rescued and protected traveled for 12 hours to his compound (I believe in Thula Thula) to mourn his death. He had died of a heart attack. They hung out at his compound for two days. How did they know he had died?? I have since read that they travel there at the same time every year.
Google it. It’s such a touching story. The elephants that he first became involved with and protected had experienced and witnessed horrible things at the hands of humans and were understandably very wary and dangerous for humans. Lawrence Anthony won them over through love and patience. That was when I came to realize just how intelligent and compassionate and sensitive elephants are.
That was amazing! Even though you've lived with them for years it must still be unnerving watching them barrel down towards you - the instinct to protect their young is powerful, and they are not to be messed with! At the same time I'm speechless at how gentle and tender they are with baby Khanyisa, and each other. Great footage, you have a unique and vital position from which to share and educate. ❤
The way that elephants so automatically go into protect mode with the little ones is so moving. It's automatic, but it's also very thought out, and always with remarkable body awareness of exactly where the little ones are.
Just amazing and wonderful ❤️
Very interesting. Thank you and also for all l the love and care showered on these beautiful animals. 💞💖
Wow, what a sight. The protective instinct is magnificent. This is what a family should look like. Beautiful beautiful beautiful video.
This is one of your best videos. The whole Herd running to meet baby Khanyisa and make sure she’s ok is fantastic.
They’re really incredible animals. 🧡🐘🧡
Thank you so much for sharing this precious moment with us. 🥰
wowwwwww amazing behaviour and how they flap there ears and getting excited because khanysia came by surprise is amazing and they calmed down and chilled because they knew there was no threat amazing everyone love u abd have a blessed evening
Amazing and scary to see them all coming in fast to protect then maneuver their massive bodies without harm to anyone. That must be quite an experience for the humans to be on the fringe of the ruckus!
Incredible footage of Lundi.and the herd accepting and protecting baby Khanysa!!
5:21 Beautiful elephant, such intelligence in those eyes. This is wonderful footage, love it! ❤👍
That's how they keep cool.
And that is how YOU keep cool 😎
I assume to cool down, it bring down their body temperature!! Also, sometimes as a WARNING! Give us more ellie quizzes PLEASE!! It helps us to learn, speaking for myself anyway!!! Thanks for ALL your love, dedication and compassion!! 💕🐘💕🐘💕🐘 (I answered B4 watching the entire video)
Just love these beautiful, loving caring elephants.
The protection of Khanyisa and each other is wonderful.
Just love them💕💕 Thank you for the video, so good 💕👏
Khanyisa looks like dumbo flapping her ears! So cute!
Omg that was thrilling and scary here in CA!! Only Adine and the carers could remain calm in the face of protective elephants!!! Khanyisa was definitely feeling the love--I think she really liked the commotion they were making over her!!!
That is the most excited I've ever seen Lundi, Khanyisa was so little and pink then. All that big protection around her is wonderful to see.
to see our little doll khanyisa flapping her ears right in the beginning of the video its just the cutest thing EVER
what a little princess doll she is and I love you baby girl
Jabu says "you better not be hurting my girl!!!
I LOVE the greeting scenes!! AMAZING & feel it in your bones!!!

Wow everyone came running like "what in the world is going on?"
Wow, that was incredible to see.
What an extraordinary video! Fascinating! Beautiful ellies...love them❤️
how scary that has to be as a care giver, I know you all have protected them for years and they know you, it still has to take nerves of steel to just stand there
Thank you for the educational video it was a bit scary to see the elephants so agitated but good to see, thanks for all of you caring and loving and protecting their welfare. God bless you 🙏
Whenever I hear them making their beautiful sounds I start crying haha. What a beautiful creature that God made so perfectly!! And the sweat glands, genius! Or they’d dehydrate in that dry hot climate if they sweat too much. Never knew that! And Could you imagine having the protection of these beautiful beasts?! Incredible
Fascinating 😊 and absolutely heartwarming 🥰
I absolutely love ❤️ seeing and hearing the protection the herd all show for Khanisa. It’s different than they’re very Solomon, quite life they lead. So high energy is exciting for us all. Thanks for showing us this behavior and the ears also.
We are so pleased that you enjoyed watching the video, we appreciate your feedback.
Absolutely amazing. To see them all run to protect is mind boggling. Thank you for sharing

Mesmerising to watch these amazing animals, wonderful video ❤
All I seem to do with my friends these days ois share with them another amazing thing that elephants do. THANK YOU!
It’s so cute when elephants flap their ears :3
Such Beautiful & Massive Creatures, The Elephants!! 💘 Quite A Very Loving & Protective Family to Belong To, Love All of Them, So Much!! Thank-You!! 🐘
Love this video , so much love and protection thankyou Adine! 💖💖💖
This reminds me of another video you have with the same reaction by the herd in a protection mode for Khanyisa. In that one, as in this one, they seem to be looking for the threat but it also appears that they think you might be part of the threat. They check you out. Is that for reassurance because they know who you are and as big as they are, that you will protect them, too?
Shortly after I saw this video, I saw the other one which I mentioned on a USA animal planet video. It was part of a set of five or six videos about animal rescue... 2 bears, a swan, two dogs and an albino baby elephant... Isn't life interesting?! 😁☺️
That felt very scary. Adine you have nerves of steel.
Hi, An Awesome Video And Thanks So Much For Sharing! I love Watching The Herd🐘🐘🐘
Thank you for sharing this information about elephant ears 🙏😊💕🐘💕😊🙏
One of the best videos ever!!!!
African and Asian Elephants have evolved large ears as radiators of heat.
Over the last 8000 years, since the end of the Younger-Dryus cooling event, Earths global mean temperature anomaly has steadily increased.
The regions that African and Asian elephants exist within are two of the most consistently warm regions on Earth.
They have biologically adapted to this heat.
Before 8000 years ago, there were woolly mammoths and mastadons.
Both of these extinct species had much smaller ears because Earth was within a much cooler glacial period.
The Younger-Dryus cooling event lasted from 11,500 years ago to 8000 years ago.
Before that, Earth had begun to warm from the previous "last glacial maximum" that had ended an estimated 20,000 years ago.
Geologic evidence shows that Woolly mammoths and Mastodons still had retained their small ears, even though Earth was warming.
It is theorized that the Younger-Dryus event was caused by a meteor impact that occurred in Chesapeake bay, in the northeast of north america, triggering a global winter due to ejecta in the atmosphere.
Usually, occurrences like this will self correct within years.
3500 years is an unusually long time for sedimentary material to remain in the stratosphere.
This theory is heavily debated.
Whatever the cause...
The Laurentide and Cordillaren ice sheets advanced again, and north american remained very cold for roughly 3500 years.
But I digress.
They're so great, and love watching them and so interesting!
💞🌾WOW! Beuatifully and intricately created. ✨🌿The facinating facts and gestures are amazing to see and read about. There's no mistaking such an animated greeting, along with the sounds and gestures. 🐘🌾🐘🐘
So much communication. Khanyisa is getting touched and smelled, everywhere.
Yes. Learned a lot! Fantastic video!!!
I love the elephants, they are amazing creatures, we need to learn more of them♥♥♥
I just love how you explain everything. What a great video
Ah, I see, the herd was returning home when they met Khanyisa.
They're all showing co-operation, this makes the herd feel more togetherness I'm sure.
Great video! Thanks 😊
Wow! I absolutely loved this. Thank you so much for sharing. With the camera close in to the action, I felt like I was right there in the middle of the commotion. What a beautiful experience. Again, thank you!
That's incredible, I felt the same, as if I was right there!! 😚😚
That was fascinating. Thank you for sharing this!
Wow! Thanks again for a great video.
My morning JOY❤️The most beautiful way to begin the day🌼🌻🌸🌺
