He was only after Zeus and Zeus alone. The rest were "only" in his way....

Sum Gai One thing thatk ind of bugs me about the original god of wars. Out of the entire greek pantheon that we slice/bang our way through we somehow just miss Artemis.

Kratos saved her life if it wasn’t for him she’d be dead
Kratos did a favor for both, saved Freya's life and did a favor to Baldr by freeing him from his immortality. I think Kratos did what must be done, Freya must to live as she will play an important role in the progress of the Norse world. I don't think she will kill Kratos, I think she will join them at some point to take down Asgard as they are the ones that caused this, banished her race, set anxiety leading to her binding the "curse" on her own son.
I think Freya does understand that it needed to happen, but grief makes you say and do irrational things. She'll either join Kratos and Atreus after some fights probably or she'll go full Kratos and die after apologizing.
Kratos didn't just kill his father he literally killed his entire family. The Only family member he didn't kill was Deimos.
He said that he killed those who were deserving, and those who were not.
Well, and Aphrodite.
The creators have said that even those who weren't directly killed by Kratos still probably died after the fall of Olympus and the death of Zeus. @Joseph Sosa

Ironically Atreus aka Loki is the one that brings about Ragnarok i.e the Twilight of the Gods upon the nine realms. He literally becomes his father’s past self, bringing the death of the Norse gods. However, he may do it as obligation than revenge since it’s prophesied that he has to do it anyway.

@@UnholyWrath3277 In fairness, Zeus does show remorse when killing him in GOW2. It's when Kratos gets to the point of actually assaulting Olympus that he really stops caring. He also clearly shows remorse after the spirit of Pandora's Box leaves him

It is a cycle of conflict between parent and child.
However in Kratos case, Zeus and all of the Gods were against Kratos. They obviously had it coming.
@@asuraspath2262 Not to mention the twist that the evils Kratos unleashed from pandora's box in gow1 plagued the gods. No wonder zeus tried to kill kratos, he was plagued with fear but after kratos beat the evil out of zeus, his rage made him continued to beat zeus to death and zeus' real intentions and thought didn't reach kratos' ears. They never got to talk it out and things would've gone different had athena knew that hope went inside of kratos and the evils went to the other gods.
I like the small touch of how Kratos' eyes soften just before and after he says "and many who were not." It's clear he's not just thinking about his wife and daughter, but the many, many, MANY innocent people who suffered and died for the sake of his revenge. People he killed or let die without a second look. He REALLY has matured since then.

The tragedy of Freya is that all she did, she did it for herself, her own comfort, her own relief, her own peace of mind, and she never acknowledged Baldur's pain as being real, or valid, or more important than her own judgment.

I feel like she knew the prophecy that Baldur will die and then Ragnarok is near. As a mother, it made her paranoid. she did her best on not getting him killed but at a great price. Baldur's fate is inevitable and she's just in denial.

There’s a difference though Kratos is just hiding his own post but she forcibly made bouldr unable to feel pain also if you think about it it was either he dies or she dies and he dies because after he killed her, does she think he would’ve just left Kratos alone we all know that he was after them long before he saw his mother.
I believe the only reason Kratos killed Baldur was not to only protect Freya but to stop the cycle of gods killing their parents. The sins of the parent is was fuels the rage of the god the most in both Greek and Norse mythology. It's what makes them into monstrosities, something only Kratos sees that other gods don't and that's why he did what he did. to prevent what Kratos once did to the Greek Pantheon.

Well Baldur did trespass to their home, Stabbed boy's arm and tried to kill Kratos. He was asking to be KILLED :)
But now the cycle of killing gods continues for kratos. Hell even atreus got his first god kill with modi.

@@Anyonewho87 The Last Spartan, who I think is the one called Atreus. Kratos just told his son that Spartan Atreus died in battle to hide the fact that he killed him himself.
I don't think Freya will end up being a villain. She seemed angry at Kratos but not Atreus. I don't see Freya wanting to kill another child that she helped save just for revenge.
AGhostInTheWild I think she might be a boss fight in the next game but it will end up being kind of like the Deimos fight where she comes to her senses and begins to help them again.
I think they'll both get her to see reason in a future game. I feel like a lot of her hatred is just anger and grief that she needs time to burn through. Like Mimir said basically.
Freya wasn't too fond of Loki in the actual mythology though.

@A regular piece of shit Atreus is Loki in the God of War universe, making Farbauti represented through Kratos because of his reputation as "Godslayer".
As for the grandpa element, Loki is Hel's father; and because of the reveal, that would make Kratos be the grandpa of the Queen of Helheim.

The Vanir are known for their tremendous magical abilities. So Kratos might be in for a nasty surprise.
Also Kratos is most likely weaker than he was when he decimated Greek Pantheon. Since he stabbed himself with the blade which contained his God powers, and he released those powers and the power of Hope to the world.
Yeah but the Greeks in total power of each god seperatly would totally destroy the Norse gods and kratos faced them down as only a demigod he lost his true god powers at the start of gow2 in not playing favorites here in descended from Vikings but I know the power of the Greeks and really look at medusa nothing worse than that the Norse are just kill happy and get high on blood they would just try and kill him and that won't work
And besides its all a moot point anyway there is a saying there is always someone stronger there are other gods in other games stronger dnd/elder scrolls so on so forth kratos comparatively is really weak
And there are only 3 vanir and they are of the seasons and njord is the god of the sea Frey is the god of summer the real freya is the goddess of spring those are the vanir

I don't know how we would compare two mythologies in real life but we also don't know how the Norse gods are scaled to the Greek gods in the game. So I assume Odin is as strong as Zeus, Thor as Ares etc. Unless I see a guide or an interview from Santa Monica Studios, that states otherwise, I'm going to assume they're equal or at least comparable.
Music when kratos speaks is phenomenal

Freya is now much like Kratos was when he wanted vengeance on Ares.
And she was the queen of the valkyries. She's cursed to be unable to harm anyone though, so there's that

Not really, i mean sure obviously his Wife and daughter are part of the not deserving list, but he didnt full on mentioned his Wife and Daughter to his Son, thats what i was hoping, telling Atreus abit more about his past and seeing Atreus reaction about his dead half Sister.
Damn I was hoping Kratos mentioning Calliope ,her daughter, to Atreus so that he will know his sister more. Step siblings since Calliope and Atreus had different mothers
The reason he didn't could also have to do with how maybe it has nothing to do with it. Remember that his daughter was barely a god while Atreus is much different than his half sister. Since he was bought into the fold early on with him being half god and half giant it could explain why he didn't mention them(since at the time he was mortal making his daughter also mortal), as the other family he's killed were all divine.
Kratos was always a demi god from day 1 though remember, since his dad is Zeus he just became a full god after he killed Aries.

Every time he says “many who were not” I always think about that one moment in GOW3 when he smashed a guy’s head into a wall and threw him off the edge just because he was in Kratos’ way whilst shimmying from a burning building

That "you will never change" "then you do not know me" is such a powerful line from Kratos, it shows that even he's aware just how different he's become (even though at this stage he *still* has more growing to do before the end of the game). It also shows he genuinely respected Freya since he was always being himself around her (for better or worse)
The strangest thing about this is that, despite the fact that whatever action Kratos took in the Greek era was absolutely abhorrent and disgusting at best, I have to admit that Kratos in this game actually did the RIGHT THING because we all know that Freya managed to save his son way before and Kratos actually owes her a debt of gratitude. It's this reason alone that he decides to take no other viable option but to kill Baldur and spare Freya's life, giving Kratos a true sense of humanity despite its tragic and troubling outcome.
And he gave Baldur PLENTY of chances to stop. Way more than you'd expect anyone to give. Shows how much Kratos REALLY didn't wanna have to kill him.
The only issue with that logic is that Freya saved Atreus without any desire for anything. She saw Kratos and Atreus as the avenue for getting back to Baldur and trying to reconcile what she did, even though she still believed that taking away Baldur's pain and making him immortal was the right thing to do in order to protect him. In many ways, allowing Baldur to kill Freya would've actually been a better act of kindness than killing Baldur and starting Ragnarok. Now, don't misunderstand, I believe Kratos has undoubtedly changed since the original trilogy, but you have to admit that in circumstances like this, he does immediately rush to killing more than anything else. Granted, he gave Baldur plenty of chances to walk away, but Baldur was so filled with rage and hatred for Freya, that it would've almost seemed dishonorable to both Freya and Baldur to kill him rather than let Baldur kill Freya and let Baldur walk away. Remember, Baldur got what he wanted which was to feel again, and he didn't care about anything else, much less Odin's desire to get to Jotunheim. Baldur even said it, "why do you even care. You could've walked away." Baldure was just a grunt interested in a selfish goal, but despite that, it was an issue that wasn't Kratos's concern and he should've walked away. But hey, one man's opinion here.
Ok to be fair, the Greek Pantheon absolutely deserved what happened to them. Kratos just took it way to far and killed FAR more people than he needed to

The voice actress for Freya is *unbelievable*. So much emotion in that speech
Kratos wasn't so much evil as misguided and vengeful in his past. In the end though, he gave the world the power of Hope.
Actually he was evil because he killed a shit ton of innocents long before he started his vengeance. And he didnt sacrifice himself at the end of GoW 3. He wanted to die, thats why he killed himself, not because he wanted to give someone hope. Developers cinfirmed that. Kratos doesnt give a shit about people, he just tries to be better for his son.

I really really really really RRREEEAAALLLY appreciate Mimir's words of reassurance in this scene. Atreus is confused and Kratos knows, along with the player, the weight of the decision he made. But still... I needed that. i really needed that "we both agree you did the right thing" today.

When he said "I killed many who were deserving. And many who were not" as his face shifted from ambition to guilt made me tear up.
When Freya swore vengeance on Kratos, I was literally unnerved.
Not really I mean the Greeks tried and failed on top of that she’s doing it out of her rage and vengeance which genuinely, once she gets a level head I’m sure she’ll be fine.

The irony is that this is all freya's fault; when she heard the prophecy that he would die a needless death and placed the invulnerable spell on him, it drove him mad. I've seen a few people refer to freya as a narcissistic parent, being that she doesn't care about his happiness or mental health, only that he stays alive. who knows how he would have turned out had she not cast the spell on him, but in "protecting" him, she caused him years of pain, agony, and torment.
I think another reason why kratos killed him was because he was probably concerned that baldur would attack him and atreus after he finished killing his mother, as he still had orders from odin
After the whole speech the way Kratos says “we must be better” sounds so profound. Also, I like the touch of how Mimir needs to acknowledge their actions like it wasn’t clear, but like in the real world, things aren’t so black and white. Great touch by the developers.
The best Lesson in Life a Father can give to his Son or Daughter: WHO I WAS IS NOT WHO YOU WILL BE, WE MUST BE BETTER...

I dont think kratos will ever mention his previous family. too much pain and unnecessary, kratos has already told Atreus to not be like the young angry spartan he once was, it only leads to a lifetime of misery

Young Kratos was kind of Ignorant it wasn’t Ares who killed his wife and child it was himself he just wanted to blame someone for his mistakes and make an excuse to kill the Gods
If you think about it, Kratos would feel too guilty to talk about killing all of the Greek pantheon, but talking about deimos shouldnt be that painful since he wasn't the one to kill him

In his rage, kratos destroyed his home bc the gods offered him no peace and kept poking the sleeping bear that was his pain. Bc he let his emotions rage unchecked, his suffering was inflicted onto the world as he tore down the gods responsible keeping it in balance. The dead roamed free and seas swelled and engulfed the land. In a way kratos took the place of zeus in the greeks myth of the great flood and caused it himself
Not only that, but the thousands of screams of people he murdered in cold blood, the slaughters he led, consumed in his bloodlusted rage

Kratos proves Gods can grow good.
Freya’s rage and resentment was quenched in the presence of a child still yet. Her mothering “nature” instincts triumph above all. I see an honorable sacrifice coming from her in Ragnarok.

I just realized how that last line before Freya leaves mirrors the line when he shoots the deer. He goes from “Don’t be sorry, be better.” To “WE must be better.”
I love the amount of detail in this game, when kratos says he’s killed many who were deserving you can see his face become very full of rage and anger when he says it but when he says and many who were not he feels the pain and sorry he’s brought to his first family and everyone else who stood the raft of his rage this scene truly shows how kratos has changed and developed into a real man who really cares about his wife and son💯

I still love how they reweaved the Norse lore to be unique but still feel very possible a variant of interpretation. And I love how all the Norse gods as they learn of Kratos think they know him and his nature but none know his sacrifices, his atrocities, and how he has made a willing sacrifice of himself before and I feel will again in Ragnarok.
While still mostly respecting the lore

I love how Kratos said "I killed my father" as if he'd do it again in a heartbeat.
I feel like his voice changed there from the booming deep voice in this game back to the voice he had in the first 3 games.
I do like how both Norse games seem to have that theme of "we must be better"
"I killed my father" forgot the rest "and my mother, and my first wife, and my daughter, by the way you have a sister, most of my brothers (He didn't kill Deimos, but he did kill Ares, Perseus, Hercules, and Hephaestus, that's 4 half brothers), and 2 sisters, and 2 uncles, and my grandfather, and my cousin, and finally my aunt who was also my stepmother."

He was tricked into killing his wife and child, he killed his mother out of mercy, and killed Athena by accident. The rest? He wasn't tricked or did any of them by accident. Not saying they didn't deserve it, but still, dude killed most of his family.

This has to be one of the best scenes in the whole story. Kratos telling his son the truth. Turning around not to face a god or titan, but a little boy, his son.

The voice acting in this game is truly remarkable. Love this game so much

The fact that Mimir is the one to say that Freya "will come around" makes me think that she actually might. She may never actually forgive Kratos for killing Baldur, but she may finally accept that in the end Kratos did the right thing and that Baldur's death is his own (and Freya's) fault. And if that happens, I could actually see Freya starting to view Atreus like an adoptive son, where Atreus give Freya something to focus on and keep herself "centered", rather than letting her rage and grief consume her.
Freya is also supposed to be one of the Norse Gods who survives Ragnarok. However, if Ragnarok plays out mostly like it does in the actual mythology, then Atreus will die during Ragnarok, as he is supposed to die fighting Heimdall (Loki & Heimdall kill each other). So in that case the only way Atreus/Loki might survive would be if Kratos or Freya is there helping him fight and kill Heimdall.
Exactly the reason why I want to fight Heimdall in Ragnarok
After all this years this still gives me goosebumbs
I just want to point out that the voice acting and mo-cap acting work from all parties involved here is top notch.
The sheer skill from this cast made for a seriously bone chilling scene.
Even with the awesome score in the background and the superb performances by the VA, I still got distracted by the way Kratos' beard waving because of the wind
I’m glad he says it when he does, avoiding Freya or another god manipulating His son with that info or something
God this game was good, I love how the music switches on queue with what Kratos is talking about. It goes from holding still with suspense before he mentions his past to when he finally makes mention of Sparta and the background music switches to a more traditional God Of War theme that we have seen in past games. Really tells you about the level of detail that went into it
The subtle change it Kratos’ expression when he mentions those he killed that weren’t deserving is so good

Early into the game, we Kratos constantly hiding away from Atreus, and whenever he gives bits of the truth, he'd always have his back turned to Atreus. Now he finally faced Atreus, admitting he killed his father.
God i missed the old kratos, itll be like:
Freya: you robbed me everything!!!
Kratos: then go join your son in hell *snaps her neck*
But would atreus do that in the future i meant he will go genocide instead of pacifist?

It did seem that Freya lost her son to Kratos. To be honest, she lost her son the moment she cast that invulnerability spell on him.
Yes what he did was pretty awful. But the gods weren’t exactly innocent either. Ares brainwashed him to kill his family and Zeus destroyed Sparta on top of that. I’d think his revenge is sorta justified

True Neutral Actually he’s still pretty much in his prime. Just because he LOOKS older and has facial hair doesn’t mean he is weaker. It is said that current has never been stronger. Then add all the powers and abilities he had from GoW 3, he would be unstoppable... literally. Even Kratos couldn’t kill Kratos at the end of GoW 3z
If that was Young Kratos he would of killed Baldur in their first fight and would of killed Freya soon after she found out he was a God to cover his tracks

It’s amazing to see how Kratos went from the merciless, bloodthirsty, vengeful god-killer. To a humble, kind hearted father to his son.
Loki being his son makes sense, the rage thats fueling kratos will seep into atreus in a way unique to himself and then he too will break the godly dynamic and free the people of the world. I love how kratos has become more human as time goes on. He was always human even to the point that he stabs himself in the chest to free the world.

It’s crazy to me for her to say she’s coming after Kratos and his son after they saved her from her own son who clearly wanted to kill her for something she did to him, now I know it’s the possibility that Kratos might have been wrong for killing him but as it sits she should be grateful Kratos saved her sad her son is dead but somewhat grateful anyway

We don't know how Kratos will die, but I doubt Thor will kill him.
Blaze Rom In the prophecy it showed Kratos on the brink of death lying on a still young Atreus/Loki who else would kill him if Atreus is to be adopted into Odins family so to me without a doubt Thor will kill Kratos
There's no way Atreus would willingly go with the Norse gods at this point since he already knows they are trying to use him for something and even the giants foresaw this.
You can also see something, like a shape of air, connecting their mouths. I think Kratos will end up giving his life to save Atreus. It will simply be the only choice he can make, as a parent no less.
He was going to kill his defenseless mother. Kratos would only allow Artearus/Loki to kill him if its the last thing that will let him live.
