I wish I could be "the worst guitarist Lizzy ever had". Listen to the live version of "Whisky in the jar" in Cork. I think it was taken in 1980. The lead guitar was played by Midge Ure. This ist the best live recording I´ve ever heard. Thank You, Midge.
Midge is such a likeable guy and so much down to earth. And he is a great musician. I'm basically a hard rock fan and, particularly into Lizzy, but I also liked Midge's work in Ultravox. I had all Ultravox records from the moment Midge was in the band. Ultravox was the only one of the, what were they called, New Wave and New Romantic bands that I could relate to. I even liked his work in the teenie band Slik where I intially got aware of him.
Most guitarists could play rhythm guitar for lizzy but those lead harmonys are incredible. I cant imagine trying to be gary moores replacement. The pressure must have been immense.
I have a LOT of time for Midge Ure. He’s very talented musically and should be admired for also helping Bob Geldof get Band Aid and then Live Aid off the ground. A fab guy! Love ‘im. Cx 💖
Midge is a class act. He always pays homage to Phil. He knows what a true talent Phil was. I saw a video of him playing Little Girl In Bloom on acoustic at Vibe for Philo and people were talking...he stopped playing and ripped into them telling them to show some respect. Then finished the song. Man I miss Phil. Lizzy For Life!!!
@@batphink2655 Midge could create a fantastic 1 hour feature film on the subject, show it in a great cinema, and Generation ZArse would turn up and spend most of it on their phones doom scrolling through pro 9/11 videos before going out to the nearest pro hamas protest that their idiot influence + peer group had told them to go, and they have to fit in and take a short selfie video to post to wanktok. Yea, I'm not exactly impressed with them. Does it show?. ;)
Met midge in 2011 doing an acoustic show and question and answer in my hometown of Aberdeen was very intimate amazing night and he couldn't have been nicer a gentleman he spoke of the brief time In Lizzy it was fascinating and even tho he was a total different style of music to what Lizzy were I'm more a rocker myself but really like Ultravox
Crazy story - "never been to America, never been anywhere" - but the first flight overseas was on Concorde ... Lucky guy, it was always my dream to fly on Concorde ... and then to play huge festivals. Must have been a thrill ride for Midge these days with Thin Lizzy.
The humbleness of the true greats. Midge calls himself "the worst" but he actually is a great and criminally underrated guitarist. Indeed, not the sort of flashy shredder à la Yngwie or similar; still, he has an emotional, aggressive, idiosyncratic style. His guitar leads particularly with Ultravox bring a razor-sharp edge to those songs which complements Billy Currie's soaring synth solos really well. "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes", "One Small Day" and "All Stood Still" are my personal favourite examples of how Midge could get so much more pathos out of each note through the use of wide vibrato and string bends, sustain, harmonics, feedback control via the whammy bar etc.
Let's be honest: Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Eric Bell, Scott Gorham, John Sykes, Snowy White... you'd have to be a damn fine guitarist not to be the worst of the bunch in that company.
Ure, is/was actually a very good guitar player,. He was maybe the " worst" guitarists Lizzy ever had, but the standards of the guitarists who ever played in this band, was sky high.
What an amazing story really. About thinking out of the box. Maybe Phil just saw the idea in having another likely irish bloke in the gang? :) Look at that photo 2:14 Looks like a character from Star Trek joined the gang xD
Mr. Robertson was in a different band at that point, Wild Horses… true, he was fired from Thin Lizzy too. Even if he had been free, I wonder if he would have been so eager to go back… at least, not very cheaply. Maybe Mr. Ure was the best value option when you think about it.
Phil must've been out of his mind when he called Midge out of all people to replace Gary Moore. LOL At least Midge knows he was the worst guitar player Lizzy ever had and has a sense of humor about it. They should've called Dave Flett (who replaced Midge on the Japan tour) to begin with and actually kept him!
I hated when he replaced John Foxx in Ultravox. I always did hate him since that even if it was not his fault that John left. Now when hear him saying he was probably the worst guitarplayer Lizzy had, I realize he must be a humble and nice guy. And actually pretty good musician and singer as well.
Really? Pretty good musician? Ure is one of the best musicians that ever existed, in Melody Maker of the time a journalist wrote about the collaboration "He put some kraft in Lizzy's werk".
Midge is so humble, but he really can play well.
Midge is so candid! He seems like a genuine good guy.
Midge is my hero, well done, the boy done well to replace my hero - Gary, and nope there were NO bad guitarists playing for Thinn Lizzy..Ever,

Midge is a very good guitarist, seen him over 30 times live and he is rock solid.
Midge Ure is a fantastic player

That's the way most young adults are today they literally talk over you unless you're
blasting loud
amazing version of "little girl in bloom"....

Midge my new hero
Phil had a good eye for talent, Midge became a huge pop star in the 80s.
They worked together on The Phil Lynott Solo Album too… Yellow Pearl.
I saw that Lizzy tour with Midge in Nashville TN. He nailed the guitar parts.

Lol @ 3:39. But In reality Lizzy didn't have any bad guitarists because Lizzy was the best band of all time. Hats off to Midge Ure.
Ahahaha TRUEEEE
Crazy story - "never been to America, never been anywhere" - but the first flight overseas was on Concorde ... Lucky guy, it was always my dream to fly on Concorde ... and then to play huge festivals. Must have been a thrill ride for Midge these days with Thin Lizzy.
Love this guy!
M.Ure to bardzo dobry gitarzysta😊

Great band! Phil sadly missed.
respect to Midge such a great muso

great guy!
Nice bloke. Nice video.
This guy LIVE is fucking awesome.
My fav Lizzy album!
Ahh I love him so humble
Best dep job ever Midge! Boy did well too!
just an amazing piece of history
Good man!🎸
There’s something really endearing about Midge’s self-depreciation...
Phil was an Ultravox fan
Nice guy great musician and had the balls to go and do it. Can't say better than that about him other than his under recognized live aid involvement
Great story:)Tho,personally, I would just love to hear the WHOLE THING about Midge's cooperation with Lizzy, focused on Himself & Phil especially.
Let's face it, they wouldn't have called him if he was average..blistering guitarist.
I like midge but why the fuck was Phil and Lizzy not invited to live Aid!!
Fine guitarist
Call me crazy! But thin Lizzie and Midge Ure? Holy fucking guacamole!
The worst guitarist? Say rather the most heroic. Hats off to you, Midge.
Ure, is/was actually a very good guitar player,. He was maybe the " worst" guitarists Lizzy ever had, but the standards of the guitarists who ever played in this band, was sky high.
A lot of lizzy performers were down to earth guys

Considering the phenomenal, virtuosic guitarists Lizzy had over the years, being the "worst" guitarist amongst them is pretty damn alright.
Ein sooo cooler Typ....
Because Phil Knew that You could do the gig Midge !
Not fogretting that awesome voice for backing vocals!
Visage!! Pre Nirvana, the 1980's had a sea of the oddest sort of bands that helped ease the sting of total domination of corporate crap music.
He leaves half way through a tour what the fuck..
Still don't understand why they didn't go back to Robbo to fill in.
Er, let me think,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

hate is a strong word no need for it
@@traciemarsh1611 Well, at that time it was. Now - it is not.
By far the worst
Actually, in Thin Lizzy, «by far, the worst» might be a compliment.
He was lead guitarist at Princes trust 82 aswell and he was fucking brilliant
Still better than you... and me lol
@H.A. Treesong well said
