- Callaloo is a very popular Caribbean dish that has is origins in West Africa. Normally, this dish is combined with fish, however, it is not necessary. What we set out to do with this and other recipes is to capture that rich flavor of the dish while excluding all animal products.
The ingredients are as follows:
2 bunches of Callaloo (peeled and chopped fine)
1 cup of chopped tomatoes
1 medium yellow onion (chopped)
2 scallion (chopped)
10 stems of thyme
1/4 cup of coconut aminos
1 1/2 cup of coconut milk
3 okra split in half
2 cups of yellow and red bell peppers
4 tablespoons of coconut oil (for coating the pan before cooking)
4 green bananas (ends cut off then cut in half)
2 slices of avocado
Follow the directions in the video and enjoy. Thank you for watching!!

Nice to see a Jamaican vegan! Not saying that there are no Jamaican vegans, but few. Hard FI give up di oxtail and curry goat!
There are a shitload of Jamaican Vegans
well...if you factor in the real Rasta dem...there are TONS of "vegans"/plant-based eaters in J.A. lol.
Few; most Rastafarians are what you call vegans!
you can always use veggie chunks
I get your point trust me lol. It is hard to give up those 2 meat in particular.
I'm thinking of going back to being vegan and I know it will be hard but my health is more important and when I was one (for 9 months). I noticed how healthy I was. I'm so glad I found your site as well as joining.🙂
THANK YOU FOR THE CALLOO RECIPE!! I was visited Jamaica 6 months ago and had it for the first time! My innkeeper cooked it and she only prepared vegan meals. Little does she know but she was a great influence on my journey to becoming vegan.
Yum,real soul food!.Great channel from a fellow Jamaican.
I made this for our Sabbath dinner, and what a wonderful way to bring in the Sabbath Day. This was soooo good!!! I couldn't find the callaloo so I used spinach. Amazing dish. Thanks for all you have shared with us. Keep those good eats coming. We are big fans of your delectable food dishes. Peace and Blessings
+Queen of the Most High Thank you for the good vibes Queen. The positive energy that we are receiving is unbelievable at times, but it is always appreciated. Peace and Blessings to you and everyone in your circle. :)

That is great!!! So happy you liked it Cassie. Peace and Love :)
I love how you explained the part about the rice and body absorbing it. Very good to know. I found rice not good at all. I use quinoa a lot now. Your very simple with your dishes which I love easy to follow will definitely try this.
ahhhhh...I knew you looked familiar! Awesome recipe! I'm cooking callaloo for the first time and checked you out! I didn't use the exact ingredients, but I took your recipe and twisted it to make my own version! Thank you!😊
That's cool. Thank you for watching and trying it. I recognise you too. Wow. Its been a long time. Glad you liked the recipe and added your own creative twist. Peace and love Laura :)
Thank you for sharing! This looks delish!! I recently began this vegan journey and I enjoy watching your videos because the food looks awesome!
+Angie Hughes Thank you Angie. I remember when our journey began. We were lost and had to figure out a lot of things on our own. At first it feels like there is nothing left to eat after you cut out all of the bad foods. Fast forward to now, we have way more options than we did when we were on the Standard American Diet (SAD). We have dedicated this channel to showcasing what our family is doing and has done for others. It is not and easy choice, but it is worth it. :)
Proper food, thank you
Carib Sensation, thanks so much. I'm looking forward to see them all. Continue the good work. Blessings to you and your family. Peace.
Awesome! Great vid. I have always been a carnivore. I do like veggies but have always liked my meat however due to some health issues I have been having lately, I am required to change my diet or else. Watching these videos are awesome and I actually look forward to cooking my next meal using good vegitables and without meat. Its not near as hard as I thought it would be. Thanks again for the great video!
so beautiful!!!
Look really good. Keep the food videos coming.
Lovely dish 👍😍
Your videos are amazing. I'm a new subbie😀. Please keep them coming.
Blessings my brother.Delicious.
love this presentation and all
thank you I never try it with coconut milk, I will for my Sunday morning breakfast.
Nice ! To bad the area I am in sucks ! No callaloo or green bananas here and not the right climate to grow my own ugghh ! Guess I need to relocate
Wow, great minds think alike! I only do quinoa and if I’m feeling for rice, I’ll do wild rice than white or brown. Trying to stay away from grains.
Did you use amaranth or taro? The leaves were huge and I grew red amaranth once cause I liked the Jamaican dish callaloo so much but it tasted different than what I had in Jamaica. Going to buy some green amaranth seeds this year. Thanks for the information and the info about rice and grains absorbing moisture was very interesting I will take that into consideration. You say quinoa better though? I do eat that often.
thank you thank you thank you, you are so informative
Looks really delicious👍
Love the nutrient details
Great receipt!
well done, you very knowledgeable guy , god bless you brother
Good knowledge breddah
looks great, good food, ..
Dear Dvar,
I thank you for your callaloo recipe. I am extremely aware that the West Indian and African culinary preferences requires the inclusion of meat or fish. And pounder if Jamaica national dish. Ackee and salt fish could be adapted to meet the requirements of a vegetarian diet. I thank you for the time you have allocated to this request.
Thank you Eleanor for your request. We actually do have a ackee recipe that meets the requirements of a vegetarian diet. We have a few videos to finish up, but we have added that one to the list. Thank you :)

Dear Dvar,
I thank you for your prompt response. I find the flavours that exude from West Indian dishes, rather hard to resist, and so look forward to tasting and sharing such. I wait with anticipation, with regards to your list, and subsequent recipe. It is rather difficult to source Ackee, with regards to my location, and treat it with great reverence when it is obtained.
WOWZERS! THANK YOU!! I've always wanted to learn how to make Callaloo. How many times do you have to wash it?
Depends on where you get it. If I grow it myself, 1 wash is sufficient. Sometimes I will soak it in the sink and add 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar. Let us know how it turns out.
Awesome
Thank you. Look sooooo yummy. But too bad for me because I live in NY and no callaloo here that I could buy. Any substitute? Spinach?
thank you brother. ... I'll be waiting. ... peace
Yooo this looks amazing!!!

Awesome video! New subscriber!
would you be willing to sell Callaloo seed? Do you have Recipe Book for sale? 13 to all your videos and Caribbean dishes. keep them coming.
+Debra K 13 love, life, and livity (not a typo) to you and all that surrounds you Queen. We have taken a little break from videos so that we can finish our books and make them available. We also have been doing speaking engagements and plant based food seminars. The love is overwhelming at times. We only started doing videos for our friends and family, but the energy that we have received has pulled us into a place of overall joy, love, and purpose. As far as the seeds I do not have any at the moment, but if I did, I would not charge you. I did not invent, nor do I own the seeds. The natural seeds are here for all of us who vibrate on a certain level. Thank you for your 13 vibes Debra K. :)
Delicious 😋 😌😁
good vibe
So you take the okra out after cooking it? Do you not chop it up small to eat it?
Wish you had a restaurant in my area!
Nice ital is vital bless!
Would like to know If you can make a video with fry dumpling (I call it bakes/Johnny cake lol) with spelt flour. Thank u.
+Connie Mitchell We have one already, just need to finish the editing. I will upload soon. I believe we have 3 videos scheduled before that one.
I never seen anyone boil the bananas with the skin on why you do that
what do caloloo taste like? I'm southern they look something like collid greens
+Lorraine G. (Lolo) I like to boil the bananas in the skin to keep them from breaking apart too soon. I have banana trees in my back yard so I know that they are not sprayed with anything that I would not consume. If I get them from the store, then I soak them in water and apple cider vinegar before I boil them. It just keeps them together longer. Callaloo to me is more like spinach than collard greens. Its is also known as amaranth greens. It tastes really good once it is prepared properly. Collard greens have to cook longer and the texture is different. :)
Carib Sunsations oh ok thanks how long you boil the bananas in their skin and cook the caloloo, do you have a egg substitute and a yeast substitute I'm trying to eat electric two weeks so far so good I'm feeling better and better loads of energy I can read for hours until i pass out. You have a beautiful family.
+Lorraine G. (Lolo) Bananas around 15 minutes and callaloo around 20 minutes. For egg substitutes we use Sea Moss jell and/or flax seeds ground into a powder. It was hard for us to make the transition. It has been over 10 years total from only eating fish, to vegetarian, to vegan, to majority raw food, to growing our own food. Our goal is to help people make the transition. We had no help in the beginning and the closest ones to us thought we were crazy. They probably still think so, but now they come to us before they go to the doctor. We discovered that we have much more options than we thought when we switch to a plant based lifestyle. However, nothing beats growing your own food. I have some videos coming up about that as well. Thank you for the love sister!!!! We appreciate all of you. We hope that our experience makes it easy for others. :)
Carib Sunsations You welcome. And Thank you for the information. I like the video you did with yiour 2 daughters on the pancakes.

Where do you buy the green banana'. I have shopped at Whole Foods and local farmer's market here in the south. Do you have any suggestions. I live in Alabama.

+darris robinson I have that video coming soon. I was thinking of doing an ackee dish with fried spelt dumplings. I will try to put that together as quick as possible.
how much coconut milk did you use?
OK Video
where do you get your seamoss from?
Where do you buy your recipe ingredients in Jamaica. I'm in Kingston.
Majority of the ingredients you can find at any local market. However, the "Real Salt" is only available in the states and online.
How I could get this in trinidad?
What's your alternative to Rice and peas?
We have used black rice and chickpeas, wild rice, quinoa, and green peas, but for the most part, we have eliminated rice out of our diet.
Hi there! I was wondering where I could get callaloo seeds to grow?
That is a very good question. Usually, I just give people seeds from my plant. This is the best one that I found on amazon.com amzn.to/2ahnH6l
MORE VEGAN DISHES PLEASE. i LOVE CARRIBEAN FOOD
Music is too loud, however, appreciate the recipe. Thank you!
What is forbidden rice?
I see you are a health freak. ......make me feel so guilty. .....love it though very nice.

Looks really good, you should be my chef, so I don't have to cook it...
how did you get callaloo in the US
+delmonte30 We grow it in our back yard and the local West Indies market and farmers markets sell it. One of the advantages about living in Florida is that many of the exotic fruits and veggies from the Caribbean will grow here.
Go to Giant food or shoppers international section or Spanish section u will find kalalloo in Can
Where can I purchase callaloo?
+Arthur Robinson ATC, LMT Depends on your location. Are you in the United States?
Carib Sunsations I live in Houston.

Green banana is tasteless and hard. Don't see the fascination. I'm sure its 17th century food. I.e. 'Christian' food.
Where you come from? It's a side dish to eat with saucy meat or vegetable accompaniments
Looks delicious
