Hanging around a McDonald's parking lot in 1997

  • Footage of a parking lot at a McDonalds as they unload and load various products into the store.
What it lacks in content, it makes up for in clarity I suppose.
On the plus side, a nice tight shot of the prices at the drive-thru menu board including the infamous "Arch Deluxe":

This video last around 6 minutes or so.

Ok so I ran an analysis on some of the prices here. I used the government inflation calculator and took the 1997 price, turned it into "todays" price, then looked at prices in the McDonald's app for my local McDonald's. Keep in mind I am sure McDonald's prices are way higher in higher cost of living areas such as California or New York City.
Below you will see the item followed by three prices, then a percentage, here is the order:
1997 Price - 1997 Price Today (based on inflation) - Today's Actual Price - % of price if matched inflation
    Hamburger: $0.74 - $1.37 - $1.59 (116%)
    Cheeseburger: $0.84 - $1.55 - $1.99 (128%)
    Quarter Pounder: $2.10 - $3.88 - $4.69 (121%)
    Big Mac: $2.05 - $3.79 - $4.69 (124%)
    Small Fry: $0.91 - $1.68 - $1.79 (106%)
    Large Fry: $1.25 - $2.31 - $3.29 (142%)
    Big Mac Meal: $3.19 - $5.90 - $7.99 (135%)
    Quarter Pounder w/Cheese Meal: $3.77 - $6.97 - $7.99 (135%)
    Double Qtr Pounder w/Cheese Meal: $4.53 - $8.38 - $9.09 (108%)
So once again the percentage shows today's actual price vs what it should be if it was strictly based off of inflation, and inflation is high. You can see that EVERY price is higher than straight inflation. However, some are way worse than others. Surprisingly, a Small Fry and a Double Qtr Pounder w/Cheese Meal is ABOUT the "same price" as it was in 1997 based on inflation! However a Large Fry is way more expensive, and a Big Mac and Cheeseburger and other items are way above inflation. Very interesting.

You are assuming the government would accurately report inflation. However the government has incentive to under-report inflation because high inflation is bad news in the media and no government wants bad news about its policies. Also, lower reported inflation keeps CPI adjustments (which are tied to inflation) down. Those McDonald's prices might actually be showing you the true inflation in the money supply.
