- "don't look up" has been quite a divisive film -- which is ironic because divisiveness is one of the movie's main topics. i discuss why i enjoyed the film from a philosophical point of view. though it is not revolutionary, it is important to be reminded of. p.s. someone tell me to cut my bangs, they're always in my eyes.

Hi, I liked the movie so I looked up the title on youtube to see clips. Yours is obviously a review but I like and agree with your title so I clicked in your video.
Now the comment out of left field: Your makeup.
Your call for authenticity belies your makeup in a way that I'm sure you don't want. How to say this gently? You look like you just stepped on to a porn set. You don't look like a real, actual, person at all.
It's a competitive world out there and to be granted any attention we have to compete with people who have superficial benefits like money or looks.
But the end result of that is....looking like some really gross porny things are about to be done to you.
As an aside, how fucked up is it that in order to get a fair hearing as an intellectual we advertise to the most primal senses?
Don't get me wrong, others do it worse. But considering your seeming prerequisite of keeping the immodesty north of the neckline you really went for it.
The problem with critics is that they need to "feel smart" by "working out" the film. Which is sad, because every film shouldn't have to feel like a puzzle. Sometimes a straight-forward message can be nice, too.
Ah I watch your videos hello:) and yeah I definitely agree. I think making the message abundantly clear makes the most sense in this case because the main goal is to point out that there is a *huge* problem with how we solve situations that could end in death or people getting hurt. So why should we have to do gymnastics in order to find out that we’re all in trouble?

@@davidmontgomery1442 well that was the whole intent of the movie, to call our attention to climate change and the director felt in the mission to do that, so he thought the best way to reach people who seem to not care is through comedy, thats what he said.
I love how shamelessly straightforward it was. It's exactly what the world needs but tries to avoid. Funny how the response to the movie exactly proved its point.
Truly. Also I love they had the guts to show the end of the world and i didn't think it would be that well done. But the last dinner scene with the end of the world was marvelous to watch unfold. Loved the film.

@@primo4915 because this could have been a movie that ends with a billionaire's technology saving the world. and i was glad it didn't take that route, because one could certainly argue that the mega-rich are largely responsible for the climate crisis. i personally don't think we can rely on them to "save" us.

Many of us, myself included, have become so desensitized to corruption, that a movie which actively and aggressively points it out seems so out of place, which is nice.
Do you honestly believe this type of movie is rare? This is not a new thing and has been done better.

For political satires: VEEP (probably the best political satire) Election, Parasite, Team America (humor can be immature a lot of times but successfully makes fun of foreign countries while simultaneously making fun of America and all its problems) Succession (Great show showing how stupid the elite/sneaky can be without anyone seeming like a cartoon character)
Most movies about some form of world ending device are usually disaster movies. And satires usually will critique many subjects even the main characters. Don't Look Up used the same joke ("people are too stupid, lazy, or selfish to do anything") for two in half hours and provided no other criticism and painted the main characters as the only people that acted like human beings. WE know the world has a lot of mindless zombies but that is not everyone, and the movie paints it like this which makes it easier not to take it seriously especially when the director says if you don't like it then you didn't under stand it. WE understand it, it was said and nothing else was said with it.
@Redimere Payne BORAT is a good political satire, can also be immature a lot of times but the stupid things happening are done by the real people its critiquing so it adds even more. It doesn't really have to tell any jokes because the people do it to theirselves.
The Big Short was also directed by Adam Mckay and it is a brilliant movie about corruption, there’s so many moments that i can recall, the dialogue, the editing, the shots, everything got my attention to a complex issue and truly made me think about those in power.
Don’t look Up is incredibly disappointing to me, i get the message, but as a movie it has nothing to offer, there’s not a single moment that i can recall as iconic either for the dialogue, the editing or a dramatic panning. Timothee's scenes are the only ones i can recall.
People are forgetting that those who are giving a bad review to this movie also gave a great one to The Big Short, and want to make it seemed as if they are salty about their political views.
You can talk about a lot about the messages, but it isn’t a good movie in my opinion.

Something I find odd is how commercialised eco-friendliness has become. Like when you see it on the internet it's beautiful women and minimalist aesthetic, and has alot in common with the "that girl" aesthetic. In reality it's reused plastic jars/bags and it's doing the compost and recycling, it's taking bottles to the bottle run depo and shopping second hand. Being eco-friendly can be pretty dirty and unnatractive but people don't like seeing that as much
I think a lot of that comes down to our obsession with aestheticism, orderliness, and beauty. I think we idealize things that are seemingly "perfect", especially with what seems like it can be done with minimal effort, despite that reality being far from easily achievable. But that doesn't stop us idealizing a lifestyle that in advertisements especially seems to promote a lifestyle that comes across as orderly, simplistic, aesthetically pleasing, and good for the world.
Being eco friendly isn't even really that tbh!! I learned that in Pennsylvania where I live, what they do with plastic bottles and recyclable stuff like that is that they put it all in a big pile right? Then they take a big magnet and fly it above the pile of recyclables to fish out all the stuff they can sell and then leave the rest of it! Like just on the ground!!! So even though we're required by law to recycle, it's not even actually recycling!! C:

Also, most of the time we are shown people who do pretty consensual stuff like using their bikes instead of a car or recycling stuff. We are rarely shown people who donate a lot, vegans, protesters etc. And when we are shown these people, they’re not always portrayed in a good light. The idea that being eco-friendly means pushing for societal changes that may translate to a loss of comfort for most people is rarely positively entertained in media, it’s sad :(

This movie was really amazing but also sent me on an existential crisis and a mild panic attack, complementing on whether or not we would survive based on our society’s ethics.

I’ve come to conclusion that all death is painful one way or the other since our bodies are programmed to freak out whenever their nervous system is compromised or shutting down. So now I’m dreading death! not because I’m scared of not existing but the process to get there

I think that the part of the movie where Jennifer Lawrence broke down on live tv was a direct reference to when Greta Thunberg delivered her one speech on climate change. She was very choked up and upset while delivering it and in the end became a meme for climate change deniers. Drew Gooden made a whole video about how full grown adults talk about Greta in such a weird combative way even when she was literally just a child organizing peaceful protests for something she believes in. I think it just shows that these adults are afraid of Greta’s sincerity and that it’s easier for them to dismiss the real fear that she feels by making fun of her.

i think the backlash against Greta is more of a cope to keep themself in their own loop without feeling guilty. i think its a form of denial symptomatic of a much larger problem, the desire to keep living our lives the same way without changing the status quo or stepping outside of our comfort zone. when faced with the harsh reality of climate change and how basically we are doomed if we don't do anything different, certain people might reject the idea on the basis or hate the messenger because they themselves are deeply afraid of the idea that they will have to fundamentally change their way of thinking or way of life

i think its a film that wouldn’t have been as relatable before covid. the pandemic made us realise the reality of how some people react in the face of an immediate crisis. also, the part where kate slowly lost recognition and the quickness with which her male colleague sold out really spoke to me

It has very little to do (at least from the movie's point of view) with her being a woman. It's about her attitude being way more straightforward and "scaremonger"-like.
The film was actually made for climate change. Filming was about to begin, and then the pandemic hit
The part where DiCaprios character yells ‘Kate, are you alright!?’ as she is being driven away in a government car with a bag over her head *sent* me. Quintessential ‘nice guy’ behavior.
i love that they actually showed the destruction of the earth but at the same time it left me crying for an entire hour after the movie ended lol

@@tolor8180 While we all should chip in to help the earth, pushing individual responsibility so heavily is simply playing into the hands of the actual polluters, BIg Oil and Big Business. They have spent millions of dollars on ad campaigns about recycling while still sitting on their hands and making money.
Yes we must help the planet, but the key lesson of the film (even if it's made by rich Hollywood elites) was that the *true* elites (the 0.1%) are the real power brokers and we must hold their feet to the fire if we want to see tangible change to our infrastructure and pave the way to save our planet.
@@breaddog420 as true as that is, this was inevitable due to the industrial revolution around the globe. Deforestation and things of like on our planet has skyrocketed since 1950s. These industries have exploited the Earth for a long time and for me tbh, it feels we are all stuck. There would be a lot to sacrifice imo to revert.

@@dessmi9184 I've seen in a few of the comment sections of this movie. You recommended other movies and shows that have the same people and friends? It seems that you have a weird personal vendetta against this movie that's weirdly suspicious.
There is a funny irony to critics finding nothing emotional or valuable in the direct messaging of the film, as their perceived job is to decipher a film's themes and give an aesthetic value to them. When those themes are put front and center, without care to aesthetic dressing and vaguery, they have nothing to decipher. What do they do? They morph the film to their reality and say that it sucks because they presumably know everything about it.
So what would you say to people who didn’t like the movie do to the
1. Overstuffed a list cast with many not contributing to the point any no name could fill it.
2. The meandering side plots
3. The overly narcissistic attitude that doesn’t help anyone. To paint something this bleak even though we know many people are fighting for change yet focus on all the worse case scenarios.
Instantly saying someone didn’t like it because of the message is weak sauce. Every movie needs to find away to deliver the message, intent doesn’t matter. Stupidity is rampant but when the main characters act like humans and every one else acts like caricatures that is on how the film is written and directed. Doesn’t always have to be people trying to be smarter than the movie it could just be the movie doesn’t do it well.
It’s hard to do a movie about climate change when the movie itself doesn’t really offer a solution rather than work together. We know this.
This film feels like someone who took one semester class about climate change and thinks they are now an expert with surface level platitudes.
@@dessmi9184 but the thing is, the movie doesn't offer any platitudes. it straight up tells you, hey, we're all gonna fucking die. I don't think it could be any clearer than that, there are no feel good solutions or big kumbaya circles or heroes going off to save the world, because that's not how things work in reality. In case you didn't know, (Not trying to be condescending or anything, just genuinely passionate about climate change) in order to solve the climate crisis humanity will have to collectivise on a mass scale, larger than we have ever seen in human history, to get anything at all done. And as things are now, it's not going to happen anytime soon. (y'know like in the movie when the main characters have been calling people to action for a super long time , but nobody takes them seriously? yeah)
And like in the movie, the people are deliberately made to look like caricatures, you're supposed to look at them and think, "wow these people are idiots!" and then followed with the realisation with "hey wait a minute!! people act exactly like this in real life!!" like when the movie mentions polls about people's opinions on the comet, some saying that it exists and it's not a big deal, and others straight up saying it doesn't exist. Now isn't that a little bit reminiscent of the current attitudes about climate change today??
The movie isn't subtle in any way, and im glad that it's not. I'm tired of the feel good "we all just have to work together and we can fix everything with magic science :))!!" because no. that's not how we save the planet. Frankly, it blinds people and lulls them into thinking that just science and new tech is enough to save us, because it's so far from the truth.

I genuinely laughed the entire time I was watching the movie. I am a biologist who has been doing research on sustainable eating as well as freshwater scarcity due to climate change. knowing what is coming and people's reaction to it is just hysterically depressing that I have just given up. I will do my part as a scientist but I will not lie to myself about people ever taking this problem seriously.
on another note, the fact that climate change is slower does have an important impact on how people perceive it; not only that, it is not even agreed upon by all the countries. you would think that it shouldn't matter but it does.
I really liked this video, if you could more movies, you could help a lot of people with not only media analysis but philosophy overall

Its funny because covid kinda happened as fast as the comet and still many people seemed to think it wasnt happening, i feel so conflicted aboht a lot of people i used to call friends and how they dealt with the pandemic, going to parties and stuff no mask.

"Not everything needs to sound so clever, or charming, or likable all the time. Sometimes we need to just be able to say things to one another. We need to hear things."
this movie made me feel different. when people are sincere, when they begin to live only when it is time to die. to be insincere implies denial of death and its precursors
search tmt (terror management theory) - their research finds the opposite is true. people become much more materialistic (going all out on tangible stuff), wary of natural surroundings > find existential security in developed/urban landscapes and violent when they’re constantly reminded of their inevitable death.

I think this film criticizes society more deeply than it's immediate implications show. It captures the underlying attitude of our zeitgeist uncannily well and gets pretty philosophical with it. The film is tired of all these obvious problems aswell as the way media deals with them and this shows in every aspect of it's presentation.
If someone is accustomed to watching and analyzing films (beyond fast-paced mainstream productions), I wouldn't understand why they'd consider this film boring. It's well-made and feels intentional to a high degree. There aren't a lot of elements or scenes I'd consider unimportant or unnecessary (either in length or purpose), and as long as this isn't the case, I don't see why a film like this should be technically boring. It might not be mentally challenging enough, or 'stupid' how many people called it, which would explain why some found it boring, but is this really a thing?
Maybe it simply is about climate change, and trump, and steve jobs. Maybe it just wants to be funny while struggling to bring up funny jokes. Maybe I'm stupid. But I actually found it really smart and it gave me a lot to think about. Maybe it just didn't find a niche to fit into. I'd agree this film isn't funny most of the time. It's highly satirical and for the most part even genuinely tragic, so I see why comedy audiences might be disappointed. On the other hand it's also extremely in your face with it's frustration about recent popular topics and might seem shallow for critics.
But really, it's easy to just take in how the film is obviously parodying the current covid, climate change, american presidency situation and think 'ok man I got it, I'm not stupid, so why do I need to watch this'. I've seen only few, though, who even seemed to care to look deeper. The film is a critique of humanity in the digital age as a whole. I think it represents a step we need to at least recognize to get out of a messy status quo. And I also mean this from an artistic standpoint. We live in a society where 'technically good' storytelling (and storytelling exists everywhere where people have to be convinced of some kind of message or agenda) will be such a universally understood and accessible thing that it's uniqueness and impact will inevitably fade over time if we'll keep the same course. We need something new. A new, more critical way of thinking. A new philosophy. The postmodern tone of this film communicates this very well. It's tired of blindly repeating the same patterns and accepting them as 'the way things are supposed to be'. It disrespects the 'hero protagonists', the 'one-sided love drama', the 'saving the world', the 'clearly defined characters', the 'being woke' and so much more to make a statement. I'm not implying that 'Don't look up' IS the new kind of storytelling or thinking we need, but it at least tries to create awareness, fully knowing that these are things everyone should clearly see anyway.

In my eyes, it felt very Orwellian: no fancy words or complicated metaphors are needed to express the message clearly.
I think you created a more clever narrative than the director was trying to portray. It tries to be political while critiquing society but not specifically on any side of the spectrum. Its safe and walks the line of political discourse to hit a broader audience while at the same time being unfunny and not that clever. It takes advantage of societies recent struggles to try and make people feel like they are outside the box. It's a dam blockbuster.
I would love for you to do a philosophy in film series. Movies have such depth and substance and you do a really impeccable job explaining the various topics. Thank you for your videos!

When someone says that the film's message was too obvious or blatant then I start doubting whether they've seen the film or if they have the mental processing of a goldfish. Like, that's *literally* the point of the movie. How you can unironically watch the film, then criticise it for being too on the nose is too much irony for my brain to handle.
I'm starting to think I was the only one watching the movie and laughing out loud till the end thinking, if this was real this is exactly how it would turn out. The realism of the movie was so funny because it's supposed to be a sattire but it's our reality and it's just sad in the most pathetic way.
This movie had me in an uncomfortable place where it felt like I was watching a true story that happened but also watching a prediction of the future but also not because it's fictional. So I was constantly going from "I can't believe this happened" to "wait it didn't, it will" to "no it won't, there's no comet heading our way" . It sucked me in so much my brain was trying to attach it to either the past, present or future but couldn't cause it's fictional
There was literally a point in the movie where I picked up my phone to check how long there was until the comet was going to hit 😭😭 I immediately laughed at myself bc wtf 😭😭

i really liked this! while watching the movie i kept thinking about how we use irony and memes nowadays - we only touch on certain topics in a very surface-level way and it's honestly quite concerning to think about, it's like we're slowly losing the ability to have long form conversations about things because of the nature of social media interactions
so yeah there are a lot of reasons why this movie made me anxious but i didn't regret watching it and i'm glad a lot of people have watched it. thank you for the video, it was super interesting!
Exactly!! I feel like friendships kind of intertwine with that idea, too? Like, it’s getting harder and harder to have genuine friendships because our phones can act as barrier to authenticity and raw unfiltered emotion. We’ll share memes with each other that hint that something’s wrong, but we won’t talk too much about it or elaborate much? And what you said about not having long conversations, yes. @@akatastrophe yes yes yes! and tbh the memes don't even feel like jokes anymore sometimes cause we say the most concerning stuff through them it's a little scary :') it's been so hard for me to build new friendships because of this. i love talking about existential stuff for hours and i feel a need to connect with people on a deeper level so with the state of things now it feels almost impossible. social media platforms aren't built for it and it can't be in person because of covid and masks and all.. it sucks
i mean ... we mostly evade having conversations about existentialism because it’s not proactive at all to laypeople and can cause more damage < the potential mindfulness it may bring someone. + that and the conditioning that these sorts of topics are odd. + the difficulty in expressing these ideas in real time. i find that text is a lot more digestible and we leave with more versus hearing it because our brains really do be selective asf more often than not. + ignorance is bliss. i hate talking about these things to my dad or mom, etc. some things shouldn’t be shared even if they’re informative cuz they’re information hazards. they’ll bring upon legitimate suffering in the people who try to mental gymnastic their way against the cosmic reasoning behind things or whatever. definitely find someone who *enjoys* this sort of talk and gets something productive out of it - it might be helpful spiritually for you + might make you feel less alone abt these train of thoughts (which everybody has had or has currently, believe me!)
@@selenaflows exactly!! No wonder 2020-2021 have been so bad lol, (hopefully 2022 is an inch better). We can connect to the world only through social media while being isolated at home. We’re all trying to emotionally connect, but it kind of falls flat and we have to deal with our realities by ourselves pretty much.
Also, I really enjoy deep conversations, too. I don’t like small talk, but I know that it’s normal to just stick to that because you’re too scared to accidentally bring up a topic the other person won’t like. And you don’t want to overshare so you’re kind of at a standstill. Talking with people can be hard if you have social anxiety oof
@@ash5779 yeah i understand what you mean, i wouldn't want to talk about this kind of topics with anybody either, mostly because it's not easy to talk about and most people just want to survive here you know :') it can be a lot definitely. but i also think movies like don't look up for example are a good way to start conversations like these without making it as complicated to express since we can all interpret what we saw in different ways.. and from there you can see if the person has something interesting to bring to the conversation/if they're interested in having the conversation in the first place. without art like this i wouldn't even know how to start tbh. art makes all of it more digestible in a way
after watching Don’t Look Up I immediately went to find articles and I thought it was surprising that there were so many negative reviews.. until I realized the negative reviews were sorta parodies in themselves of the satire in the movie and news outlets being lampooned in the movie were the ones dragging it 👀

Haven't seen this movie, but from what's being said here, I can totally relate. Having grown up in a fairly rough part of the world, and now living in the western Europe I can't help but feel that people here are very.. weak. Spoiled by the high living standards to such a degree that most people simply cannot believe and accept that some things are just impossible. When a true challenge appears, they're highly incapable of even the smallest personal sacrifice, and like to think that everything will be sunshine and rainbows very soon, despite very clear evidence of the opposite being true.
I can agree. I have noticed that its interesting to study about how evolution and convenience have changed people over time.
That's literally why the smartest people are always from poorer parts of the world

I concur, and its troubling to me whenever I discuss concepts like austerity, self reliance or familial support and I get a knee jerk reaction about how their system is perfect and can withstand whatever challenges or changes occur and provide ever more for all when the signs of decay is all around them. If there was a invasion or depression, the people don't have the resources or discipline to resist. I'm not saying Americans would fair much better but we have a cultural awareness of prepping and anticipation of collapse that is *completely* non existent anywhere I've been in Europe. Its incredibly dangerous and I dread what this could lead to if the Euros don't get some impetus of what put them on a pedestal in the first place.

I think it's one of those movies that the general public seems to like but that pretentious critics and journalists seem to hate for petty reasons.
I too cried after, so much substance in this movie. Themes around death, fear, capitalism, greed, authenticity, gratitude.. Shows how ridiculous we are living right now. -“We really did have everything didn’t we”
I cried too after watching the film, I thought it was just me being too sensitive, but seeing that others felt emotional too, shows that others really felt the message as well. 💗
My parents have been climate activists since the 80s. I was raised in a climate activist family. For 30 years people mocked them, and now suddenly the results are beginning to be obvious and everyone's waking up... I've grown up knowing the world is ending, and I've reached adulthood and we're closer to the edge than ever. There's still hope though.
I sincerely encourage people to look into activist organisations (I'm in XR) and just send them an email, ask what you can do to help, I guarantee they will be very welcoming and help you get oriented. It doesn't all have to be marching and getting arrested either, there's tons of behind the scenes work that needs doing too, and you don't need special knowledge or qualifications. If you can even manage 1 hour a week any little bit helps and they'd be glad to have you.
These last few years there's been a major increase in people volunteering as more and more people wake up, but there's a long way still to go if we have any chance of successfully pressuring governments and corporations into changing their policies. There's still a possibility for us to turn this around and undo the worst of the damage, but time is slipping through our fingers. This is something to do today, not tomorrow.
even though this movie sent me into full panic attack mode, i really did like the movie.
i feel like the problem stems from people expecting the most from film. they expect originality and extremely unique takes when in reality not every film needs to be original. We don't always need pieces of media that are doing something new. Sometimes reinforcing a painfully obvious message is essential.
Yea theres this weird obsession of needing to feel smart while watching a movie and the aesthetics of it all. Not all messages need to be served to you on a silver platter with all the fancy meats and cheeses. There's still substance in a hamburger, as bland and redundant it may be.

I was honestly baffled by the critical reception of this movie. I found it clever, witty, a pretty spot-on (to the point of discomfort) analogy of what being a climate/sustainability science today is like, and with pretty stellar performances across the board. I feel like critics have forgotten what satire actually is.
Yeah I was depressed for a couple of days, thoughts of my loved ones dying because of stupidity made me choke up, that dinner scene hurt me a lot because I think that’s what my family would do

this was really interesting! the part about authenticity was a totally new concept to me, so thanks for introducing that. and what you said about our fear of sincerety really resonated with me. I so often think about how not to seem too cringe but also never too pretentious, always non-chalant and 'above it', self-reflective, -referential and -concious. I think its's partly because of the 'sjw-cringe era' where we saw how sincerely expressed upset got mocked to no end.
I still couldn't really appreciate the slowness of don't look up as you could, I like the idea behind it but it was still too boring for me to enjoy, part of that probably also being the ' I-already-know-all-this' mindset.
Perhaps thinking it was "slow and boring" is a sign of your need for immediate gratification somewhat mocked in the film.
I was an extra in the movie and I could tell it was going to be super interesting! It was so cool to work on a movie that has a powerful message clearly affecting it’s audience. (I was in the concert scene!)

i definitely agree that the comet made for a good example of what's happening with climate change, but I was also thinking in the beginning of the movie that it shared a lot of similarities with the pandemic as well. I remember the memes being made of Kate screaming especially stood out, as I distinctly remember people making memes about the virus in early 2020 as well, and not taking it seriously.
As someone in the field of climate policy, I appreciate this video and message, great analysis and I love combining existential philosophy with real world issues. We can learn so much more from the past than we think
I loved that you touched on freedom and choices, it’s something I think about constantly. We have too many options and it’s turned us all into a culture that is quick to throw things away in hopes of “something better” and not just material things but people and ideas and morality. It all gets tossed around and no one is really loyal or committed to anything. I think this leads right back to the existential crisis most of us are having during this pandemic.
The film "Melancholia" was a much better film dealing with our constant social/economic distraction from our eventual deaths, and the emotional phases and contemplation we'd go through before we face our end. The problem with its veneer of a snooty arthouse film not for the masses stopped people from even seeing it. If you want to voice a message to the most amount of people, then you need to dumb it down for everyone to understand and to make it relatable. This film “Dont Look Up” succeeded in communicating its overall message while putting it on the most popular streaming service for the masses to get simple effortless access to it, and that makes it a success despite the criticisms from critics.
Except Melancholia was literally about depression.

The posh family ignoring the possibility of death, the dramatic phases of suicidal ideation, the eventual extinction of all life on earth from a planet-destroying event? Did none of that also have a metaphor for what's currently happening? Depression was definitely the overtone of the film, but added with that it's about how we confront our own mortality when facing permanent changes and significant events in our lives. Climate change and it's existential crises is forcing us all into finally contemplating our own lives and our eventual deaths. Hence the reason I even brought up the film in the first place.
The themes and context of Melancholia and Don't Look Up are actually quite different. In Melancholia, death and destruction were inevitable. In Don't Look Up, the governments and media could have done their parts to avert the disaster.
@@Elzilcho87 Of course, a piece of art is never about just one thing. I was mainly referencing what Von Trier said about being based on his own deep depression and how depressed people see and feel the world around them. Melancholia is actually one of my favourite films ever and weirdly enough, despite being what it is, I've seen it multiple times. I don't usually watch really heavy films more than once or twice because of the psychological exhaustion they give you.
Melancholia was about an extinction event humanity could do nothing to stop (and did nothing to cause), and even asserted (through Dunst's character) that there's no other life in the universe. There's no hope, and the only choice left for humans is how to spend the last moments of life.

This movie was one of the best I've seen in a while, truly brilliant, what I love about it is that at the end everyone just dies, there's no sudden thing that happens to save everyone, it just ends.
It's honest and blunt and in your face, because let's be honest would you not be screaming and freaking out if you discovered a deadly comet??
(Also I really like how the "don't look up" campaign mimic certian politics so well, people will ignore what's right in front of them just because they are promised something that isn't even definite)
I feel like if there was something that magically saved them in the end (like the comet crumbled or something) it would really cheapen the message because, things like this don't magically fix themselves. Also the whole point of the film is that the scientists are right and no one is doing anything, that would make the tension it was building up pointless, and it would make the news reporters, the president, and the ceo right all along. The scientists would just be further mocked and scrutinized, and it would be just the most unsatisfying mess of an ending.

Not a critic, but I feel like the movie didn’t meet up to the momentum it built, if that makes sense? The story is full of meaning, yes. But didn’t meet up to my expectations entertainment-wise. The imagery and soundtrack were otherworldly though… 10/10 in that aspect 🤷🏾♀️

Finally -- someone actually attempts to deal with and discuss the deeper aspects of the movie -- and SUCCEEDS! (nice job here!). It was ghastly and hilarious after I saw the film to watch some of the MSM interviews of the cast members. These folks at the stations were either clueless or uncaring about the fact that they were actually CONTINUING TO DO exactly what the film railed against! Same with some of those "erudite" film criticisms. Talk about missing the forest for the trees! In a way that entirely validated the film.

You are so very articulate. I admire the thought and work you put into your videos. I definitely agree that the message being obvious is the point, and like many people in the comments are saying too, its actually refreshing to have the corruption not swept under. the rug and yelled in our faces. Art like this is important to spread to the masses.
The movie touched me. I think sometimes reality beats fiction, for instance, when you see people creating a judgment based upon someone who they admire and proceed to follow their lead blindly, like you pointed out, without having any sort of critical thinking. So when I saw the scene with the president’s followers wearing that striking red cap stating “make ame…”, I mean, “don’t look up”, it really got me thinking of how the “agenda setting” theory is so true nowadays and how we can be manipulated so easily.
It really saddens me to see how superficial we’ve become. You can have a reunion with your friends and they’d be looking at a little screen with their minds thinking about something else rather than being present in the moment. We are now programmed to be in a deep state of dopamine rush, that we barely stop to look at our surroundings and enjoy time with our loved ones, we seek to only feel the good emotions and dismiss the bad ones. The movie made me thankful for being alive and punched me in the face for being anxious about things I can’t control. So, in Mac Miller’s words: “we don’t need nothing but today”.

This video was - amazing. To be quiet Frank this film was great. It was telling of so many issues that we as a society currently deal with, as it can be interpreted in quite a bit of differing ways. Listening to you talk about the qualities of this film that are important to recognize was eye opening. Interesting how this film was presented with a satirical/ ironic aspect because that’s how many serious things on social media are ingested. Overall, thanks for the video.
I watched 'Don't Look Up' mainly because Jennifer Lawrence is one of the two main characters in the film. As per usual, she, along with Leonardo DiCaprio, are doing it once again with their phenomenal acting skills. Ariana Grande kinda shocked me, though. Didn't expect her character to be so rude at first. I guess it's for the sake of humor, I would say. Also there's Meryl Streep and Jonah Hill. I feel like those two actors complement each other really well in terms of how they interact with each other. Overall, the film literally gave me goosebumps. I'm a firm believer of the 'end times' and I'm glad that movies like this are somehow putting their best efforts to expose some of the cruelty and ignorance in this world and how that will all come to an abrupt end at some point in the near or far future ahead of us. This is so lengthy, but I just wanna share my thoughts. I hope that ya'll are safe out there.
Fear of sincerity really got to me.
People don't like things that make them uncomfortable so they will just joke about it to diffuse the situation.
Example:I had a very explosive breakdown at school during physical ed because things gradually built up.
I dont know how my teacher handled everything but I know some of my friends tried to make light of the situation and made jokes about it calling me a spider monkey and stuff (context: I climbed a fence). In the past this teacher has diffused situations with a joke to lead away from discomfort anyways. I cried hunched in the grass and some kids asked if I was okay jokingly and started making jokes that I couldnt hear because their teacher led them away.
They are uncomfortable with raw emotion and doubt it to be true because it makes them uncomfortable. And as said,we live in a society rooted with speculation and doubts. It was big. I've heard other people call me an attention seeker for what I did and others make jokes and references to when I screamed and climbed the fence.

I feel like they are just in no position to lecture the public about anything, as impactful as the movie would have been for me.

Your editing is really good, I've only just noticed on this video that you make cuts for different parts of the same conversation, and I think it is commendable that you put that much editing effort to ensure that you pick the best version of each part of your message, I can't imagine how many takes on each part you did to have those available but the end product is really smooth and informative,

Great vid! I do think you handled the philosophy a little to loosely tho. For example most existentialist philosophers would disagree with idea that contemporary consumer society is an anxiety-producing machine, as it’s anxiety for ppl like Kierkegaard or Heidegger, (anguish for Sartre) that illuminates to us the real totality of freedom, it’s trans temporal nature, and our ability to pull our selves out of the inauthentic existence (whether that inauthenticy comes in the form living through the crowd for Kierkegaard, tranquilizing Dasein and mediating purely experience through the They-Self for Heidegger, or the attempt to negate the experience of anguish/Bad-Faith in Sartre). Consumer society in many ways is wrapped in these inauthentic exigencies that organize our lives and engagement with the world, namely as an effort to reproduce alienated capitalist subjects. It’s this reason why I think what you call the “paradox of choice” is in actually what many Marxist and leftist philosophers generally call the capitalist “illusion of free choice” whether it’s what we buy or who we vote for, all those actions are organized around sustaining a particular order, that of capitalist political dominance. I’d also mention that your description of Postmodernism, while good for an introductory understanding of the term, doesn’t really work across the board and most “postmodernists” have different interpretations for it is (same with Existentialism tbh, but to a lesser extent since PoMo describes a philosophy, an art style, an approach to literature, and a condition contingent to our time). Imo if want to use it or understand it bit better, I’d recommend checking out CCK’s videos on it, they are really informative. Either way tho really cool video! And I love the analysis of sincerity and irony!
i really agreed with the sentiments of this video! while watching the movie, it made me of think how climate activists are often criticised for painting apocalyptic pictures and fearmongering, but sometimes we just need to learn how to swallow the hard truth and to feel obliged to make very necessary changes to how we live our lives, even if it comes with inconveniences and sacrifices. it was very interesting to see you link the movie to a fear of authenticity and sincerity, which i had not thought about from a philosophical point of view before nor related these to our present society at large, but i found what you said ring very true. thanks for the great video and sharing your thoughts! :)

The Big Short was also directed by Adam McKay and it is a brilliant movie about corruption and other topics as well, the dialogue is engaging, the editing, the panning of the shots and acting 10/10, it takes your attention during the whole movie to a complex issue. I can recall many iconic scenes from that movie.
Don't look Up as movie doesn't offer any of that, I can only recall Thimothee´s scenes, nothing else.
Those who are giving a bad review to this movie also gave a great one to The Big Short, and lot of people think that they are doing this because it hurst their ego, their political view or their view in general of so many things, when in reality is the movie that it's not great. If you want to transmit a message through this format it has to be good in the first place, in my opinion.
This isn't the first woke movie by the way, it seems like it because of the stack cast and because it is streaming in the most popular service.
The aims of the movies were different, though. The Big Short was about focusing on all the main characters (and their actions/inactions) during an event that already happened. Don’t Look Up is a statement about the way a country as a whole is dealing with an ongoing and worsening crisis. There’s a reason so many climate scientists feel heard by this movie. When the entire country (and sometimes world) puts more emphasis on short term profits than anything else, everyone upholding those values in the face of existential threats looks like a selfish idiot. The movie is making the point that sometimes we don’t needs to explore seven different sides of the same story and interpret a million layers of nuance
@@abeerahwasti7234 good point, i was actually thinking that the fact this movie is going to be easily to forget for me, may be the whole point, even though i agree with the message deeply. But at the same time i always come back to watch or read my favourite movies, documentaries, books, etc which led to more lessons being learnt. Years are going to past and definitely I’m not going to come back to this movie, so i think my issue is from a cinematic experience. One thing that bothers me though is the assumption the every bad review that is being given is because those critics don’t agree with the message, there may be some for sure, but definitely a minority.
i am so happy to see that others were miserable after watching this film. it really hurt me and scared me.

With this film, the satire is extremely close to the reality in which we live.
When fiction gets closer to reality we enter the uncanny valley, which creates disgust, rejection, hopelessness, fear...
It creates dissonance with the actual feelings one may have about reality.
And then personal reflection comes into play, BUT only if the Big medias hasn't done it for you before.
Hope and despair, all in one.
