Situations like this can happen in any major city around the world, it's not representative for the overall genuinely welcoming people I have met so far in Sri Lanka🇱🇰 I'm still very happy to be here and is doesn't ruin my super first impressions here 😊 🇱🇰 My Sri Lanka travel guide (over 60 pages, travel tips, routes etc.) ➡ tinyurl.com/kenabroadsrilanka
Yes, l had experienced these tourist traps/tourist scams but luckily didn't fall into their traps as my hubby is also like you, Ken, one who's very careful and will not listen to their "sweet talks". Yeah, that right, this type of situations happen in all tourist city in the world. One has to be super extra careful.
So sorry Ken,for all the trouble you went through, yes you get few culprits who try to mislead and plunder money. Hope u take maximum care, all in all ,99% of Sri Lankans are very friendly and caring.
It's a tourist trap. Have to be very careful when the drivers want to take you other places like these. Don't fall into their trap again. Enjoy Sri Lanka. ❤️
I'm so sorry about what you had to go through... don't fall for those things... I can see that you have really good understanding about those situations... always try to get in to tuk tuks with meters that's the best way... also there will be many people try to give you city tours don't fall for that... I'm so sorry as a Sri Lankan I apologise on behalf of those rude people... Thank you for visiting Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 ❤
Great comment. Truly feel for our country and at the same time feel ashamed when these tuk tuk drivers try these tricks with visitors for a quick buck.
Really appreciate your honest opinion of the unfortunate situations that you had to face. It may have been an isolated incident. Most of the Sri Lankans are very hospitable and caring. I am pretty sure that you will enjoy the rest of your stay in this beautiful country.
Hi Mr. Ken. I am really sorry for your experiences as a Sri Lankan. There are many such fraudsters in tourist hotspots. Always avoid those who come to help you by force without your request. If you need help, always ask people, such as a couple or a family, without asking an individual. Ordinary Sri Lankans are generous and love to help others. But beware of professional scammers. I wish you a happy and successful tour in Sri Lanka with a wealth of new experiences and knowledge. Cheers!
Dear Ken, you go to police and give a statement.I am srilankan.I am sorry to hear that you have gone through a fake scam.you could have got off from the three wheeler if you have come a cross any incident like that.Or before you leave the country please go to police and give a statement.
Thank you for not using this incident to generalize on Sri Lankan people. Having said that, I'd really call what they - the taxi driver and the shop - did was a scam. It is good that you did not give in. It is also good that you highlighted this so that other travelers could guard against this type of incident. Take care and stay safe brother.
It's good that you recognize these situations for what they are. When people ask where I'm from, I smile and politely say "all over - no one place in particular" as we moved a lot. They already know I'm American - no need to be more specific. As a woman travelling alone, I'm extra careful about giving out too much information or putting myself in situations I can't control.
Thank you for sharing and making others aware of the good and the bad,the sweetness and the sour of your journey in all these foreign countries 👍🏻✊🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻#teamabroad
This is not acceptable, doesn't matter what situation they are in, they can't do something like this to a person who came to visit the country. If you can, try to make a complain to Sri Lanka Tourism Board/ Tourist Police. I think they should be aware of these kind of scammers for the sake of overall development of tourism in the country. I'm really sorry that you had to face such a situation in Sri Lanka.
Hi Ken, thanks for info! I knew it s happened in big cities in the world whatever kind of scams not only in jewelry but in other kinds of scams. As my experience in Sri Lanka, I did buy something in a jewelry when I was in Kosgoda (very nice coastline beach) the tuktuk man was so kind to bring me to a jewelry in the area, I bought a ring of 50$, and since then I asked this tuktuk driver to bring me somewhere (his price is much cheaper than tuktuk from the hotel), when I left Kosgoda, he even offered me a beautiful flagrant wooden necklace which I still wear it sometimes until now…! I never stayed more than 2 nights in Colombo & I ve been in Sri Lanka 5 times..! Stay safe & look forward to watching your videos out of Colombo :)
Thanks Ken. An incident similar to your first one happened to me in 2019, on the last day of my stay. That day morning, after having the breakfast on nearby restaurant, I took a ride in three wheeler (Tuk Tuk) to get back to the hotel (Marino Beach Hotel) on the Marive Drive Colombio 3; the driver kind of begged me just to come with him to a place where he can get some refereal fee even if I do not buy anything.; same tactice used by your driver. Who knows, it could be the same jewellery shop too! I did not have any intention to buy any jewellery at aal, I jsu wanted to help him out; but I ended up wasting about 1/2 hour there as the owner and the salesment held me up there trying to sell some thing. Thanks for sharing your expierence; sure it will be an eye opener for other tourists as well. I liked the way you expressed in the first part of your video with the disclaimer "This clould happen to to any one in any country and that this was your only bad expierence with a driver in Sri Lanka". It is true, some of these three wheeler drivers want to earn extra money and these shop owners are expoliting the situation. Enjoy the rest of your stay in Sri Lanka, the country where I born. Sure will have unforgettable expierence touring this beautiful scenic country; specially the beaches in southern (Bentotta, Galle, Tangalle )and eastern coasts (Arugam Bay, Paasikuda - Batticallo, Trincomallee, mountains and waterfalls in the central part of Sri Lanka - the Hill country (Adams Peak - Sri Pada, Kandy, Nuwera Elliya, Happutale) and the Notheren (Jaffna) and North Central (Mihintale, Sigiria, Polonnaruwa, Anuradapura) lprovinces with historical mounuments and religious places.
To be honest, my feeling about thesituationis that these systems were probably there for some time already. It also has all the hallmarks of a scam. Glad you made it out safely.
I am sorry you were in a situation that made you feel uncomfortable! And yes, like I always said - nothing is for free in this world. Or if something seems too good to be true it probably is. Glad you managed the situation without losing any money and good that you are posting this video as a warning to others.
That's not actually true. I've traveled extensively and have met many wonderful people in my travels. I've often been invited for a meal or a party having nothing asked of me in return. I've even been offered places to stay at no charge. There are many kind and honest people left in this world. It has a lot to do with the energy that you give off. If you travel through life with joy and love in your heart that's what you'll find.
@@KC-in9px I guess you are lucky then, but there are those that thrive on tricks and dishonesty. There are yin and yang, light and dark, good and bad, happy and sad .. well, you get what I am saying, right? If not, I am going to break into a song😜.
@@KC-in9px Somewhat disagree, the warmer your heart the more chance of being taken for a ride. Yes as you say "There are many kind and honest people left in this world." but us softies who are perhaps not such hardened travellers get sucked in by the minority of predators. It's a numbers game to the street artists and I have 'lost' on a number of occasions, just pennies here and there and some humility and laughs and self deprecation. I have also experienced the other side of the coin and been treated like a king in the most varied circumstances. Life is like a box of chocolates as someone said: best wishes brother :-)
@@petercross6960 Just because one travels with joy and love in their heart doesn't mean that they necessarily become foolish. Positivity and confidence attracts goodness.
If this “sales tactic” wouldn’t work, it wouldn’t exist. Unfortunately to many people fall for this and end up in some awkward, sometimes scary surroundings. Thank you for reminding everyone just to be conscious about various situations. And yes of course it happens everywhere. I would add, especially if you travel on your own, never ever stop listening to your inner voice.
Agreed Rocco Hagedorn. We need to be careful but sometimes we do get carried away especially when you are in a holiday mood. Not a pleasant feeling to be scammed but it happens all the time...all over the world. Your vlog is a timely reminder we need to be careful at all times.
Had it happen to us in Bangkok. I stopped using Tuk tuks, this was years ago. When it happened again, I told the driver that we were not interested and just wanted to pay for the ride. He decided to be difficult and stop at a petrol station. We just got out and walked away. Never used them since!
Ah Ken! Indeed such things happen everywhere ... Thanks for sharing and for maintaining still a positive attitude you have been supporting many of the honest local businesses !! Also the good thing was that you were also very courteous, that's the best way to deal with such situations
Ken, please remember you will also come across genuine super helpful people who wouldn't expect any money at all. Therefore identifying the intent is important. Enjoy your stay in SL.
Being a veteran traveller and going to remote places in Thailand how could you fall for this trap. It’s such an old trick. It’s common in Bangkok. And besides you’re alone I think you’re very lucky to come out unhurt. Naive is an understatement 😜 Moral of the story never make conversation with strangers who are over friendly. I’m glad you made this video. Most Sri Lankans would be ashamed of treating tourists this way. Btw it’s no better in india. The same trick selling coloured stones as gems
@@vijayafernando1 I’m surprised how Ken has not reacted to this post ? Sometimes I actually believe these videos are made to attract more subscribers 😜🤣
Hi Ken...so sorry for the inconvenience what you face in Sri Lanka. Actually I respect you because you were not mentioned it as a Sri Lankan fault and you have really really good understanding about that situation. few people having these kind of bad behaviors.. Thank you for visiting Sri Lanka 😀
A very informative and helpful video made. Great of you to let those travelling know of this tourist traps or scams. Wonderful to know that you didn't fall into that trap. Always remember that nothing in this world is free and never never greed.
@@KenAbroad yeah, your mom is absolutely correct and she will be very glad to know that her son still remember vividly her advice. Good boy/young man !!!
I visited Sri Lanka in 2012 and loved it, I returned in 2018 and noticed a lot of change. More hustlers had begun frequenting the beaches and popular towns like Kandi. Also, be aware when booking train tickets that if you don't have a reserved seat you may spend the whole journey crowded and standing since they over sell tickets. It's sad to see the decline, I hope it improves in the future.
I am Egyptian and I have visited Sri Lanka very often and I have also been deceived into buying and selling diamonds..but it is a very small percentage of fraud in Sri Lanka.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you in our country, my friend. There are many such fraudulent people in the city of Colombo. I saw you say that there are about three months in our country. My only advice to you is to be careful in Colombo compared to other cities.
@@ashanmendis8091 They might be rajapakshas slave officers. They can't loot people any more coz people are already poor . So rajapakshas try to find commission from these guys To their pocket from foreigners 😊😊
Don’t apologise for other people mate, it’s not your fault. There are grubs like this all over the world. Just need to educate people not to get caught in these traps.
Thanks for sharing this with us. I faced the same situation in Bankok they offered goods with overpriced but I refused to buy anything from them and the Taxi driver vanished 😅
Ken , travelling is a part of numerous lesson to be learnt. At least you had managed the situation in a positive way . Keep on enjoying the moment but be alert as well .
Thank you Ken for your understanding and positive comments about Srilanka. You are so careful and i was trapped few times by these kind of people. Take good care of you and carry on your excellent work.❤️🙏👍
Definitely a Tourist Trap. Very good explanation and understanding of both situation. You will find more and more people like this in tourist cities like , Galle, Hikkaduwa, Ella, Kandy.
Ofc. it's a scam! I am sorry to hear that the incident happened to you! There will be some rude people like them everywhere in this world.. Like you said, that 1% people are still exist here in the city side like Colombo.. Safe journey and Enjoy everyminutes in my country as safe! TC. Love your videos always💖🇱🇰
Friendly local questions around the world: 1) "Where are you from?" Wherever you're from they've lived there or know someone who has. Used to develop a connection with you. 2) "When did you get here?" Seeing if you're relatively new to see if you're a potential mark. 3) "How long will you be visiting my wonderful city?" Seeing how much time they may have to empty your pockets. 4) "Where are you staying?" Sizing you up to see how much you may have as a potential target. If you're staying at a hostel or a budget hotel you might not be worth their time but if you're staying at a 5 star resort hallelujah!! Remember that most locals who may in actuality be very friendly will rarely approach you. If you're the one to engage them then they'll be happy to chat with you and you'll meet people who will gladly help you enjoy your stay in their city without asking for anything in return.
Ken u were 10 months in Malaysia and travelled all over West Malaysia from d bustling cities right up deep to d kampungs and those off d beaten paths and no such experience ... Maybe that's why as u said it yourself u were a bit naive as far as this case is concerned ... Anyway thank you for sharing this not so nice experience that u had in Sri Lanka with us ... At least we could and would be more careful of these ' traps ' if one day we were to go there next time ... Thanks a lot for sharing Ken ... Info like this is indeed very beneficial for us ....
I am A Sri Lankan, It is a really nice place, but less than 0.01% of the population does not understand the importance of being reasonable, and giving a positive experience will grow the entire industry. Thank you for being not so negative. if you understand how to avoid these traps you sure can have a unique experience in Sri Lanka.
🇱🇰🇱🇰👍❤A lot of those things happen only around Colombo. It's normal to bring a tourist and get a commission. Tourists need to know to use their brains in such situations Things like this usually do not happen in Sri Lanka because tourists visit Sri Lanka 40% of the revenue comes from tourism. We apologize for any inconvenience caused to you. Do not make a mistake about Sri Lanka🇱🇰
@@robertjordan3050 I'm even watched Philip videos. Usually a foreigner charges more than a local when buying a dress. That's why the tourism industry has something to do with tourists.
This reminds me of the taxi mafia of Phuket. Each time you leave the Phuket Airport they will stop half way to some tour company. Thank you for this great advice. Take care.
Wow... Ken, I mean man ,, you're one of the coolest guys living on this planet.. I respect your understanding.. and most of all you never COMPLAINED.. that's the spirit man... I'm Sri lankan , but I'm not going to apologize for any of these situations... Actually I feel sorry for those lame scammers... Lol.. I wish them luck.. Because you are the real deal my friend... seriously man... Welcome to Sri Lanka. Have a safe journey..
I experienced a similar incident in Bangkok....a taxi driver took me and my friend to a jewellery shop at a god forsaken location in Bangkok and we were 'forced' to buy jewellery. It makes us 'loathe' Bangkok so much and more careful the next time around. So much for the 'land of the smiles!' I call it a gentle scam.
In the early days of my travels in Asia I probably got tricked by this about 5 times. Eventually I started to sense when it was happening and it became very easy to just not get into those situations anymore. I just do not talk to those overfriendly touts or drivers. I think a lot of foreign tourists get tricked because they're just feeling a bit lonely and want someone to talk to. Eventually you mature above this sort of attitude.😀
I think it’s a tourist trap. The tourist board needs to know of such activity. Also, take a PickMe or Uber. Almost all tuks must have a meter. So check if the tuk has a meter before getting in. Colombo is a bit corrupt and you will get such shady characters. Being aware is always good. Thank you for sharing KEN. When our country is badly in need of the revival of the Tourist industry and to boost our economy, such scammers ruin all such opportunities. This is a matter for the Tourist Board of Sri Lanka to look into very seriously. I will share your video with some your operators. Hope the rest of your stay will be a happy and memorable. God bless you. 🙏💐
You must be the first travel blogger which never generalize those people, which there is good and bad people in every country. I was watching all your SL video because me and friends traveling next month. But I see a lot of nice people and a lot of good things. Two or three bad people that happen everywhere. The main thing is you are a very nice and respectful person.
Oh, Ken. You are too kind. It is a scam/tourist trap. It happened to me on arrival in Bangkok. I took the ride and wandered off, so I won but again in Chiang Mai, it got a bit heated, so not a good situation. Luckily I was aware but you are so right to warn other travellers of the pitfalls. Who needs to buy a suit when tey are on holiday? You handled the situation brilliantly. I still love Thailand, so it didn't ruin anything for me. Thanks for sharing
Hi Ken. Usually when I'm traveling my radar is always up for scams like that. Go with your gut, if it doesn't seem right keep moving. Love your videos. First time commenting
Thanks for sharing this experience Ken 🙏 Been in that situation several times in different citys mate, they always or lived in your place, have a friend that does or did and you end up in a shady sort off shop. Turkey, Cuba, Mexico, Spain, Greece, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. Just be warned that these things can happen in any major citys. And as always, C Ya in the next one, cheers 🙌🍻
Hi Ken. It's very nice to see that you are in good health and is aware of these traps. I went thorugh the same experience with my tuktuk driver in Bangalore, India. On the way to my hotel he drove me to a shop and the guys there was like trying to have me buy a lot of overpriced items. Once I said no, the driver got very angry and I had to get an OLA car to drive me back to my hotel. They need to realize that doing these kind of things will discourage tourist to visit their coutry. Looking forward to seeing many more fun and informative videos. 😊👍🏽
Hi Ken, I am so glad your cautiously dealing with "scam" and pressure selling while keeping your composure. I would have given them the evil eyes 😂 if they're still pestering me after I politely declined...a few times 😠. I understand people need to make a living, but to me, no, thank you, means just that. Glad you are on to their games. I, too, used to work in retail, where the mark up is about 200-700%, so, when it's half price sale, the shop is still making profit. Anyway, I wish you joy in travelling the country, nonetheless 🙏. When Laos is open, maybe you can meet up with Craig from True Budget Travelling channel. He is a cool, quirky, and compassionate guy from England who was in Laos, but now in Thailand. Please contact him just to say hello. Take care now and be safe.🕊️🙏
Hello Sir, As a Sri Lanka I am very sorry for the encounter you had with those scammers, I suggest you may make an online complain to SL Tourist board as soon as possible. Genuine tourist like yourself always welcome to Sri Lanka.
Hi Ken, although you are an experience traveller, but the genuine kindness and politeness of people you saw/met in Malaysia and Thailand throughout 2 years of your journey somehow let your guard down. So be extra careful, especially you are now in south asia, it takes whole new level.
@@jomontanee I got a real scam in Patong beach (Thaïland), I bought a paire of sunglasses in an optical shop. They guaranteed me it s a good brand quality, I paid the price of the real brand but it turned out it s fake one, so after a few months, the frame was deformed & broken…
I was in Sri Lanka about 5 years ago and you do have to be careful with locals who want to chat with you in a friendly way. I got so paranoid after awhile, because I felt very aware of my situation of people chatting to me for there own advantage!
The lesson is look into there eyes subtly as possible, and most important to think. A special forces friend told me that the most lethal weapon is the human mind. Snakes look at our eyes because snakes are really scared of humans because we are very dangerous. In the same way ,we need to see the enemy as a person. if they are about to scam, it will show in their reaction.
During our visit to Sri Lanka same thing happened When they brought us to a Gem shop ! But same thing happened once in Bangkok , also with a moto tuk tuk , we had to visit a few shops of friends ! When we refused a few times we were kicked out !
If I an tourist anywhere in the world and a stranger offers me something for free, I just decline to save myself time, trouble and money. Ken you are so naive, but also part of your charm Safe travels
Hi Ken, Happy travelling. Lesson learnt! However some situations you might not able to control. Like what happened to me before on my departure at the airport. The immigration tried to tell me my Canada passport was a fake and they kept me in their office until 30 mins before flight departs. Of course trying to do a shake down but I warned them nothing is going to happen and I will goto the Canada embassy if I am not on the plane. Good luck! Sri Lanka is a beautiful country especially up North in Kandy.
Thanks for your experience. I also got taken into a similarr SCAM in India. I was totally overwhelmed as a solo older female. I loved India and yes I fell for a similar situation. I think any people get taken like that. That is an experience of new traveller, I am wiser now and going to Thailand next thanks to your wonderful videos. Appreciate your honesty. I never shared my story with family or friends on my return
Donna, the tuk tuk scams including the Bangkok Gem Scam are prevalent around the Grand Palace. Get a Grab taxi to the front gate if you don't want to be harassed like I was this week
Our scammer on the road in Kalutara told us, that he works in our hotel in the kitchen, but of course he saw our "all-in"-bracelets and never has worked there😂. And it was our first day, so we were white as snow! He told us, that he is going to marry two days later and that he has free days now to prepare his wedding and for honeymoon later. Then he showed us two rings with blue sapphires, which he suggested he bought for his wedding. Then his "father" came by car. We thought, we would go to a market to buy food and something else for his wedding. But they brought us to Beruwala to "Aida" gem-store, where we should get 40% off because of Valentines day and Buddhist holiday. Just when he told us, that we are going to the jeweller, we told him, that we wouldn't buy anything. But they went on with us, telling we needn't buy anything. The drive took 20 minutes. We didn't buy anything. Nearly back to our hotel on the way back my wife shouted "Stop the car!" So they stopped immediately, and my wife pushed me out of the car. The whole time I believed his story. But later we have heard, that this happens often. She pushed me out of the car so quickly, that they couldn't even ask for money for petrol! 🤣🤭
I live very close to Taj Mahal which is a very popular tourist attraction. I see it everyday and overhear such conversations. Some fall for this trap of free ride or sometime very low priced ride. People should be aware such touristic traps. Hopefully many people will learn from your video.
Great video Ken! Before we travel to a new country I always read all about it on Wiki Scam. It's always good to be prepared. Also, the next time someone asks you where you're from, just make up a city name and see if they've been there too. :)
When I went Sri Lanka 3 years ago, I got same situation in Colombo almost everyday, that's so annoy >< But another cities are nobody like that and most of people are very nice. You must go out from Colombo!
Super helpful video. You are very polite about the way you framed it. But I suspect if this happened to me, I would be feeling very intimidated indeed. Its not a "scam" or whatever that I've come across but I shall keep this in mind. In fact, although this may not be illegal, it kind of feel like ti should be.
First thing first, glasses look great on you. So cute! I had this kind of trap in Hong Kong decades ago too. I was so young and naive at the time (20’s) traveling alone. I wanted to buy the walkman(ipod of the 90’s) and I was scammed. The trick was the same as you encountered, 2-3 men just gathered around me, cornered me to make me confused. PLEASE DO NOT SAY IT WAS YOUR FAULT TO FALL FOR THE TRAP. IT IS NOT. I have told myself these years too that it was my fault until I watch your clip here!! YOU MADE ME REALIZE : NO IT IS NOT MY FAULT. IT IS THE SCAMMER’S FAULT! Don’t take the blame. You are the victim as I was the victim. Set yourself free from guilt. Please.
Hello Ken!Yeah I've been in a similar situation in N.Y. long time ago,I've stepped into a big shop where a friend of mine used to work in and soon a guy started to ask me where I come from and as I said Italy he of course replied he had italian's roots and bla bla bla 😅 but my friend came to "save" me from his colleague, soooo yes you can be in these kind of tourist's trap all over the world. In Bangkok as well some tuk tuk drivers or even taxi drivers offers rides with few stops at some shops. You are doing a great job also sharing these stuff 🙏🌺
Hi Ken. I'm really sorry, what you had to go through. Such thing happened almost everywhere, great that you have shared your experience so, others can be aware. There are many people who really like to help without expecting anything from anyone. You have a great understanding about the situation and you felt about it. Because of few people, our foreign visitors are facing uncomfortable situations. It's a scam and always ride with meter tuk tuk .Be careful and enjoy your stay.
Am sorry for you.. unfortunately this can happened anywhere in the world as you mentioned’ stay safe enjoy your rest of the day as usual much love from srilanka ❤️
In Thailand in 2011 I had a similar thing happen in Bangkok. A tuktuk driver offered to take me to my hotel for free if we visited a few places first. I was aware this sort of 'scam' existed and so wasn't too concerned as I had my wits about me. There was no way whatsoever I would buy anything I didn't want to. Also I'm 6'4, 260lbs roughly. This doesn't make me invincible, but my philosophy in life is that I will be one of the last guys those type of people will choose to get physical with. So the driver took me to a few places, and we chatted, he pointed out other interesting sites around Bangkok too. I learned that he would get some fuel money in some way, just for me visiting the places he took me. I do believe he genuinely did get fuel money for this, and wasn't relying on sales commission, as he never cared that I didn't buy anything. Indeed he got friendlier as the time went by and I repeatedly didn't buy anything from the place we visited. It's been so long I can't remember all the places where we went. One was a gem shop, which was planned out so that I could only take on long route through the store before exiting at the far end. There was no real sales pressure put on me. In fact the staff barely spoke to me in there. There were several other foreigners inside. Another place was an official Thai Tourist Information place. In there I asked some generic question, like 'Can you give me some info on places I might want to go on a day trip.' The guy behind the counter was very annoyed! Told me to leave the building! I have no idea what I did wrong, unless he was phsycic and knew I wasn't really interested. Perhaps he was I was with that driver, and knew I was going along with the 'scam'. But if that was the case, why would the driver even take me there if the staff weren't also in on it? So I think he took me to 5 or 6 places in total over about an hour. By the end when he realised I was totally chilled out he was asking me very politely, 'do you mind if we go to one more place?' It was perfectly fine. I got to see around BKK as it was one of my first days there. The driver got his fuel money. He took me back to my hotel free as agreed. Overall, honestly it was a positive experience. I got to see more of BKK, free ride, and an amusing and surreal experience of how these sorta tourist traps work. I guess I wouldn't advise anyone else going along though unless you are very sure you know what you might be getting into. Be careful people.
Thank you for the 'heads up'. This is a pressure sales tactic used on tourists anywhere in the world. I am sure they have succeeded in their tactics with many tourists especially with naive tourists particularly with younger men and women. Glad you had the fortitude and suave to get yourself out of the situation. It happens to anyone. Stay alert! Enjoy your travels. Your vlogs are great!
Well. We as locals are really sorry that you had to go through this experience. To be honest, most of ‘ these’ types of people are not being ‘ friendly’ . These are cunning guys and you literally can guess by how they look ( dont mean to body-shame anyone , but that’s what they really are !! ). It’s so humane of you to think that people are trying to make money , by then, there are so many other ways to make money than to loot or scam. Karma has placed them where they are and pitying for them is not needed, for I have seen and heard how local vendors talking behind back raising the prices of items absurdly hiding it behind the cunningness ( rather than the friendliness). However , non- business community, the locals you’d meet on the roads and all would honestly be glad to help you out and be in your company . Be careful of the such vendors ,they’ll rip you off, it’s in their genes to scam. Disappointed to see these happening to genuine people
Hi Ken, firstly thank you for sharing this video. However, I think you're trying to be polite saying it is a tourist trap but whatever you called it, it's a scam and Yes, it happens everywhere on earth, sad to say. What they sell you for US$500 will probably worth US$5 and they will only accept CASH. This happened to me when I was in Bangkok years back and there are actors to pretending to buy to show you it's really a big discount. In Bangkok, they'll tell you that day is King birthday and you will get 50% discount for tourists Only. If you go to Bangkok Sleeping Buddha Temple's front door (not side door which is closed), you will see signs posted by the Thai police about this scam. Anyway, glad you did not get scammed or in your word, trapped. Good luck, stay safe and safe travel. Good job to your video.
Looks like this was some tourist trap sales pressure technique. While they haven't actually committed any crimes, their tactics would likely pressure the novice tourist into spending money on their product. I think it's great that you brought this situation to light so that other travelers can be more aware of these type of situations.
Glad you were not harmed. Scams like this can be found everywhere, eg Italy, China, England, etc. The rule I observe is when an offer is too good to be true it is likely to be a scam. Enjoy the rest of your travels. Cheers from Australia
I’m so happy you don’t fall in the “scam” wherever you all want to call it and something that surprised me a lot that you hadn’t had this same scam in Thailand because when I went there the same situation came to me ,they put me in a suit shop and them i had to take another tuk tuk .please take care of yourself and remember nothing is for free
I have encountered this same scam in Delhi. It's amazing how those of us with lots of travel experience have a 3rd sense for these things. The entire time I felt something was off and needed to get out of the situation. Always listen to your intuition. BTW, I have road tripped all over Germany and have spent time in Bremen, love that city! I mentioned in on of your previous videos, I'll be in Sri Lanka in a few days. I am traveling with some other bloggers, would be cool if our paths crossed.
Thanks for sharing this. Something similar happened to me in Turkey but I was brought into a dodgy restaurant, totally empty, and of course the menu prices were massively overpriced. 3/4 waiters surrounded me putting pressure but I was clever enough to leave the place!
Yes you are right ,it's just a tourist trap, happened to me in Cairo Egypt, Manila Philippines, Phuket Thailand, so can happen anywhere . At first you don't realise what is happening, but then you become street wise and wary of very friendly people and situations. I am working with Sri Lankan people here in Melbourne Australia they are all fantastic, I want to go there some day. Happy travels cheers
Anyway such tactics modus operandi very common in many countries . I have been to Sri Lanka 2x representing my country in rugby . That was 35yo+ ago . Didn't come across such blokes probably coz we have our guides and fellow Sri Lankan players who accompanied us for sightseeing or shopping . Each country team was assigned a PR officer who does everything . Having said that , last year I watched a couple of travel blogs whereby some of them also experienced d same . Desperate situation drives some locals to resort to such ungentlemanly acts. Just b wise though . Don't let such bloke lose ur focus on ur mission to enjoy whilst vlogging ur experiences der. We r always anxious n excited to follow ur journey everywhere coz ur videos r comprehensive and sort of educational too . Stay safe God bless Ken🙏🙏♥️regards KL
We are so sorry to situation that you faced. There are some people in here like that. I believe you got an experience with that incident and how to manage a situation like that.
i joined a tour group in China years back n they took us to jade factories.they get us into a room n told us that we must stand up when their boss arrive.we stood up when the boss arrived n the sales person continues by saying, that we are very lucky cos their boss is in a very good mood today n will give big discount.my friend bought a jade for anout rm 1k plus but later turns out to be fake. these sales person will keep on following you everywhere, smiling but in the end if you did not buy anything, the friendliness n smile just vanish into thin air.thats how it works there.the tour guide probably gets a commission too.we wasted too much time hanging out in the factory that we end up having less time to go sight seeing.they hurried you.
Thanks to share this useful information. First, I feel sad too, that you experience this uncomfortable things in the early days in Colombo. You right, that we need to take more precautions (everywhere in the world), if meet super-friendly person. Something must be hiding behind it. Take care, stay safe and healthy in Srilanka.
Ken ,Thank god people like you can open the eyes of tourists 🤦♂️You explaining in detail on the pit falls ,i truly wish people take notice 🙏🤦♂️But i can't help thinking if you wasn't a tall man and asked questions it would have been costly .I know of these scams but most don't .Brilliant mate👍Such a shame on your trip🤦♂️
Try to a book a taxi from Uber or Pickme. if you feel something fishy is happening, try to remember the number plate of the tuk tuk or get a photo of the driver. Then report to the nearest police once you're out the taxi.
Before the Covid situation, i was there for a business trip, and your experience happened to me, not exactly the same but the driver took me to temples, beaches etc, a merry go round and tried to bring me to somewhere sell me something (I can't remember) and i said firmly a NO, in the end he scammed me like usd100 for the trip...bro, just to inform you that Sri Lanka now faces financial situation and it looks bad, my advise to you: please be extra careful with the people there, many mind manipulators around and even more during this period..hope all the best and stay safe!
Srilankans are super friendly anyway so not all friendly people trying to scam you, being friendly is a common thing in Srilanka you will meet more friendly people while your trip , I'm a Sri lankan and I apologize on behalf of those people... Thank you for visiting Sri Lanka . Be safe and enjoy your trip !!
Situations like this can happen in any major city around the world, it's not representative for the overall genuinely welcoming people I have met so far in Sri Lanka🇱🇰 I'm still very happy to be here and is doesn't ruin my super first impressions here 😊

And u didn't get these while u were so long in Thailand ... Hehehe
I'm so sorry about what you had to go through... don't fall for those things... I can see that you have really good understanding about those situations... always try to get in to tuk tuks with meters that's the best way... also there will be many people try to give you city tours don't fall for that...
Many apologies 🥺 🇱🇰

Hi Mr.
Correct, Don't ask individuals, ask a couple or a family or many people together. Never trust any TUK TUK driver. Always use UBER OR PICK ME.

It's not a scam by definition. Rather a tourist trap as he said.
Actually this is happened to me and my friend in Bangkok
May I know experiences of traveling alone please? I’m planning to travel the world alone
Thank you for sharing and making others aware of the good and the bad,the sweetness and the sour of your journey in all these foreign countries 👍🏻✊🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻#teamabroad
So sorry to hear about this... We Sri Lankans do not accept these kind of behaviours. We welcome and respect tourists in to our country.
100% agreed
These kind of scammers should be punished.
It's such a common encounter for tourist..It's like being kidnap by the tuktuk drivers and businesses..
Can't or should'nt? But they did and they have done this for years. Complaints probably must have been made. What can/ will the authorities do?
They all know that.
Those are rajapakshas friends this is how rajapaksha try to collect scam money☺
Exactly! A few bad apples make the entire crate rotten.
I am Sri Lankan born raised in Germany Italy now in Sweden. I highly appreciate your super nice explanation & I apologize for wat happened for you
It happens to me and my friend 16 years ago in Bangkok then we found out that the shops had all fake jewellery very well organised ken
Yeah I remember your words about that 😅
That's not actually true.
Your vlog is a timely reminder we need to be careful at all times.
wow, your comments are very diplomatic and very professionalism. two thumbs up !!!!!

Friendly local questions around the world:
1) "Where are you from?" Wherever you're from they've lived there or know someone who has.
I’m loving your new videos from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

I experienced a similar incident in Bangkok....a taxi driver took me and my friend to a jewellery shop at a god forsaken location in Bangkok and we were 'forced' to buy jewellery. It makes us 'loathe' Bangkok so much and more careful the next time around. So much for the 'land of the smiles!' I call it a gentle scam.
You are like Karl Rock!!... Exposing these issues... Im sure people will find this helpful when they visit Sri Lanka

Hi Ken, Happy travelling. Lesson learnt! However some situations you might not able to control. Like what happened to me before on my departure at the airport. 🤣🤭

But another cities are nobody like that and most of people are very nice. You must go out from Colombo!
what a true genoraus man you are. thank you for telling truth . well done
This doesn't make me invincible, but my philosophy in life
is that I will be one of the last guys those type of people will choose to get physical with.
So the driver took me to a few places, and we chatted, he pointed out other interesting sites around
Bangkok too. I learned that he would get some fuel money in some way, just for me visiting
the places he took me.
I do believe he genuinely did get fuel money for this, and wasn't relying on sales commission,
as he never cared that I didn't buy anything. Indeed he got friendlier as the time went by
and I repeatedly didn't buy anything from the place we visited.
It's been so long I can't remember all the places where we went.
One was a gem shop, which was planned out so that I could only take on long route through the store
before exiting at the far end. There was no real sales pressure put on me. In fact the staff
barely spoke to me in there. There were several other foreigners inside.
Another place was an official Thai Tourist Information place. In there I asked some generic question,
like 'Can you give me some info on places I might want to go on a day trip.' The guy behind the
counter was very annoyed! Told me to leave the building! I have no idea what I did wrong, unless
he was phsycic and knew I wasn't really interested. Perhaps he was I was with that driver, and knew
I was going along with the 'scam'. But if that was the case, why would the driver even take me there
if the staff weren't also in on it?
So I think he took me to 5 or 6 places in total over about an hour.
By the end when he realised I was totally chilled out he was asking me very politely, 'do you
mind if we go to one more place?'
It was perfectly fine. I got to see around BKK as it was one of my first days there.
The driver got his fuel money. He took me back to my hotel free as agreed.
Overall, honestly it was a positive experience. I got to see more of BKK, free ride, and an
amusing and surreal experience of how these sorta tourist traps work.
I guess I wouldn't advise anyone else going along though unless you are very sure you know what
you might be getting into.
This happens all over the world 😀👍thanks for share your great video
I have encountered this same scam in Delhi. It's amazing how those of us with lots of travel experience have a 3rd sense for these things. The entire time I felt something was off and needed to get out of the situation. Always listen to your intuition. BTW, I have road tripped all over Germany and have spent time in Bremen, love that city! I mentioned in on of your previous videos, I'll be in Sri Lanka in a few days. I am traveling with some other bloggers, would be cool if our paths crossed.
I'm so sorry for this inconvenience as a Sti lankan...🥺
But I'm glad you handled it really well....
Thanks for sharing this. Something similar happened to me in Turkey but I was brought into a dodgy restaurant, totally empty, and of course the menu prices were massively overpriced. 3/4 waiters surrounded me putting pressure but I was clever enough to leave the place!
Yes. that happened to me in bangkok last month. they were selling jewelleries and other things. Managed to get 2 leather bags from the shop though.
Yes happened to me in Bangkok too, see my post. Very sad this happens everywhere.
Ken~ whaat'up- very insane upload-
Hi ken , interesting video's as usual , we often hv these problems in many countries , but be careful ,
Good info! Take care my dear friend
One of the best intro.
Good information, thanks for sharing 👍… it was definitely scam.
Tqvm Ken for the very informative info. Lesson learnt!! it’s very scary for a female traveller.. Please take care n be safe🥰
I have experienced this in some cities of India as well .
Similarly in Bangkok , where the tuk tuk driver took me to get a suit stitched .
