A tribute to Eomer, to mirror this wonderful video tribute to Rohan's greatest Captain-Prince. (Long overdue!) Eomer represented the BEST of the "typical hegemonic" male, the traits which are disgracefully vilified and undermined in our clown-world of today: honour, valour, fearlessness, loyalty, justice. Not to say he was unintelligent by any means, but that he saw things very clearly, unfettered by more obscure, intellectual thoughts. He appeared unconerned with broader perspectives, but had an excellent sense of Right and Wrong in the near-to-middle distance perspective which concerned him. This great clarity of thought and being gave him great power. He was sure and confident in what needed to be done, and he could be utterly trusted to deliver it come Hell or high water. It makes him an excellent leader, and men follow him unquestioningly with admiration and belief in him. The nearest comparison to him in the literature is Aragorn; but though Aragorn is also martial, he appears far more of an intellectual, a wiser man, a higher thinker and CIA-style 'intelligence' gatherer. Aragorn's character is quick and decisive too in leadership, and he is an outstanding swordsman, but we could fully trust Eomer's thick skin and lesser vision to shield him from perhaps the sense of HUGE odds arrayed against him, and rightly or wrongly, thus could be fully trusted never to break or sway from his task. Dynamic and stalwarth at the same time, we can see his obvious leadership, how men realistically would have rallied to him. This is very apparent in the scene when we first see him as the remainders of the Fellowship - Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas - hail him as his troop thunders. His sharp, decisive actions are evident in turning the unit around and drive arrestingly back on the three hunters. We see his confidence in his challenge of them and their plans and whereabouts; his quick unencumbered speed of thought in gifting the companions with the two spare horses, and especially the sharpness of mind with which he hails his two charges to quickly bring the horses forth. There is no delay with Eomer. This in itself is a remarkable quality making him an indisputable leader. When the Fellowship made their way into Lothlorien and were being stopped and frustrated by Haldir denying them further acces, I expect that had it been Eomer in Aragorn's place, Haldir would have had a much tougher time of it. Aragorn could be reasoned with and in a sense, could possibly be compromised, without much fear of retribution as he would be known to be magnanimous and above that; but with Eomer's totally uncompromising nature, I expect that Haldir would have buckled far quicker under his stern glances, simple reasoning and incredulous looks. Thus again in contrast to Aragorn, Haldir would certainly sense that this man was not the forgiving type, and that he could err in making an important enemy out of him and his people, certainly creating a a cold rift between their two people's over some bureaucracies of border control of lesser importance. Arguably, Aragorn's diplomacy and the elves long-standing knowledge, trust, and affection for him might nonetheless have been the very thing which won the elves over in allowing other races through their lands for the first time. In any event Eomer would not have been there, and probably would have even be too stubborn and self-resilient to ask the elves for aid of any kind! But I am just auditioning in my mind that had it been so, I think Haldir would have seen a kindred spirit in Eomer, respected it, but also feared to cross it. Criticise Jackson for inevitable disagreements on taste etc. we may, but nonetheless he did the literature great justice in bringing great characters, a great story, and a great magical world to life. One of the absolutely unforgettable moments for me in all of the films lasted only two seconds at most! It is one which I could watch over and over again, each time getting as much sastisfaction as the first! That was the scene when after charging through a sea of Uruks, surrounded on all sides, and looking like this was going to be the end for them, the heroes of the Hornburg all of a sudden glimpse the huge host of Rohirrim gathered at the top of the opposite bluff, primed to charge down the cliff face into the now-confused and hesitating Uruks. Theoden looks up, sees his warriors and knows the dauntless mettle of the one who leads them! His face beams like the sun in triumph and maliciously he snarls: "Eomer!!" Eomer's forceful roar of "TO THE KING!!!" will echo in my mind forever. Lastly I also adored that magical moment on Pellenor Fields, again showing Eomer's valiance, when the Rohirrim are making that initial strategic retreat from the Mumakil; but Eomer is never one to run from a fight. His iron will and proud heritage won't allow it. Turning around he faces back to the Mumakil Captain, a fearsome spectacle: strange symbols painted on his face, perched high on his gigantic Mumakil mount. He is also a fearful leader among men, yet Eomer does not sway, darefully meets him eye to eye, and with enormous strength and surety casts his spear high and far into the air driving it straight through the enemy captain! An enormous feat in its own right, a feat of legend! I am very glad that Jackson AT LEAST afforded Eomer that one great moment of triumph as befitted his character's ability and standing. Overall Eomer, played so excellently by Urban, is so dear to us because he *does* represent the best things in masculinity. He is the unyielding strength that we as a people need when darkness threatens, yet he is also tempered by justice, a respect for elders, family and tradition. He is the one we look to in our darkest moments, he who can face all the terrible power that the darkness can muster without flinching or failing, and whose quick uncomplicated thinking can direct and mobilise others to multiply his force and power. He is Karl Urban's finest and dearest of characters, and considering all of the dark characters which Urban has been chosen to play because of these unflinching, uncompromising qualities putting them to wicked use, I truly wish to see him set in another gallant and benevolent captain/corporal role again, before he is too old to reprise such a role. He, Gandalf, Aragorn and Sam would have been my personl favourites amongst the characters of Jackson's editions of this breathtaking trilogy, but like the shining spear of power he wields with deadly force and uncompromising surety, Eomer is one of a kind. All hail to this most gallant Captain-Prince of Rohan and future King!!
Totally agree, excellent analysis. This character made me weak in the knees not so much by what he looks like (although he isn't hard to look at by any means ☺️) but who he is and the way he stands true to the qualities you described. It's one of those instances where the actor playing the character is neutral to me, Karl Urban is just a good looking man but doesn't elicit anything particularly special, but the character played here melts me. The Rohan have these traits generally, Theodan also was such a man but older.
Along with Aragorn Eomer was one of the strongest warriors on the side of light, possibly beyond even Boromir or Faramir. His grandfather was a good king, his uncle was a great king but Eomer was an exceptional king. If the alliance between Rohan and Gondor wasn’t already ironclad by the marriage of Eomer’s sister (who was his heir until he had a child) and Faramir, Steward of Gondor than the “brother in arms” relationship he and Aragorn cultivated would solidify it in perpetuity.
One of the 5 key characters to the lotr trilogy and saved middle earth by his will and honor to his king and country. To fight the good fight. He is legendary with few amazing humans in tolkien lore along with aragorn and some others.

I've been watching this video for 3 days straight now. The song fits so perfectly with Eomer's character and the fact that the song is in "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" (a movie about a horse fighting for his freedom) and Eomer is a marshal of the Rohirrim just fits wonderfully. The clips used were great and were used in the right places to up the effect. I could not thank you enough for the quality that is this video. Please make more. (I'm sure that all sounded like really formal critique...not trying to sound like a know it all)

You are exactly spot on. Well said. Tolkien did wonders in creating this spectacular human character like he has done with few truely great humans in middle earth lore doing impossible feats to save the good in need stopping evil. So true. From the bottom of my heart thank you. It is well meet to meet a fellow fan of eomer as I know him. I was just looking up more lore and love for him when I came across your brilliant comment. Again, well spoken good sir. :)
@@hughmellerick4417 to the king is a ring tone I use to wake up alarm in the morning. Lol. ;) gets me up and ready each day. Lotr lore nerd and enjoy it so.
Diabolical!
(I'm sure that all sounded like really formal critique...not trying to sound like a know it all)
He is doing great things in The Boys. Amazing Karl Urban as Billy Butcher! Fucking Diabolical
And Skurge in Thor Ragnarok.
He's "Simply The Best"
Eomer, the manliest man in Middle Earth! Honest, brave, loyal, strong and gorgeous and...can he throw a spear! Wow!
