You know when you're sitting in a restaurant and that feeling of excitement you get when you realize the waiter is bringing you your food? That's how I feel when I see a new video from y'all.
I know it's not all about age. But I am Loving seeing people around my age choosing alternative lifestyles or choosing a life that is for them ! It's seriously so refreshing
It must be so empowering and wonderful to go down to your root cellar and “shop”...knowing that it’s all the result of months and months of work! Love the lights in your kitchen!
My grandfather was a farmer we lived in an old farm house with a dirt floor basement. The basement walls were made of round field stones. In the basement he had four big wooden boxes with no bottoms. He would store carrots in one, potatoes and onions in the other two boxes. They were stored in there for the whole year if not longer and they never went bad. My grandfather’s old house was in northern Canada. 😊 btw love your channel 👍
You guys are so well established there. Root cellar, all your food preserved in jars, bacon, ham, meat everything. One thing I'm so glad you said. JAM.. when I w as s a child and heard American's say peanut and jelly sandwiches, I thought they actually put jelly the wobbly one you pour hot water on and it sets in the fridge. 🤦♀️ I thought yuck. Here in Australia we say Jam also. Adore these video's. Thank you from Australia xx
Here in the US, we call jam a spread that had the fruit still in it. We call jelly a clear spread that has the fruit strained and only the juice is used to prepare it. Jello is the box of stuff that you add boiling water to and fruit, etc. And chill.
What I love about this level of self reliance is how much you inevitably appreciate and fully enjoy the fruits of your labor. Much more than any meal you could ever have elsewhere.
I love the fact that Kat always wears that Utah hoodie I lived in Utah for 20 years it's a really cool place and it has some of the most diverse scenery and great wildlife you have everything from moose to Bear to Deer to Elk mountain lion and some of the greatest fishing in the country.
I sometimes feel like crying seeing you guys work, gardening, cooking, eating..... together! Bestbfriend of each other! You guys are born to be together! The only couples that I everseen! Be happy forever!
It’s awesome how y’all’s channel is growing so rapidly. I joined when y’all had a few thousand and now your closing in on 80K...congrats guys you have a great channel
I live on the opposite side of the world in a totally different climate (South Australia) but I LOVE your root cellar and the lifestyle you have built for yourselves. We don’t have the ability to live as self sufficiently as you guys, but you definitely inspire me to make some big changes and focus on producing what we can and eating much cleaner and simpler.
I am so inspired to grow veggies and can and build a root cellar! Just too old and disabled. Enjoy your youth and working abilities and keep the videos coming!
I have been watching for awhile and I was just going through their channel last night to see how many I have watched. A lot and I thought I was close to the end. So I started counting the ones I have not watched yet. I stopped counting after 30 lol
Great video! These can meal idea videos i love to see! So many show harvest going into storage but few show meal prep from storage. Thank you! And love your butterfly plates!
Agreed! It's fun to watch the grow & store but for those of us who try and implement what we see in these types of vids are left wondering what to do after.
It hadn't dawned on me that by canning and spicing everything in advance, a soup like this is literally throwing together 4 ingredients, no slaving over prep or a hot stove. I'm simply amazed by how well you guys eat.
Almost 79 THOUSAND SUBS !! found your channel when you had just under 6 k subs...amazing and not at all surprising how you have grown in a short period of time, kudos to you and congrats on your success.
MORE, MORE, MORE! That was great. Loved your ceiling lighting - so cozy. I would love to see more desserts, more beans, more veg, just more of anything. You guys make it look like a feast as it should be for all the work involved. Guess you're eating 'high on the hog". AND is well balanced for nutrition and homey sweet goodness. Gotta feed the tummy hugs, too!
I use a dutch oven to bake in on top of my woodstove. Put the empty dutch oven on the stove to heat. Put what you are baking in your baking pan that will fit inside the dutch oven. Put a trivet inside the dutch oven and when it is warm enough insert your baking pan, put on the lid of the dutch oven. I vent the lid with a fondue fork at opposite corners to let steam excape. It works well for just about everything! Enjoyed your video!
I never realized what boring meals I have until now. Breakfast, lunch and dinner from your root cellar. You have done well "grasshopper". If you should ever have a doubt about moving to Alaska, Please watch this video. Thank you for sharing this video.
I love English muffins. When I lived in the USA I always had them with blueberry gems and lots of butter as well. I was so young and skinny! Now I am skinny because I am old, but I don’t mind being a senior as long as I can move about and enjoy your videos which I have followed and missed this very first that you’ve made. Your videos give me great joy for which I’m terribly grateful. Bless you.
To get very crispy chips/fries you can either par-boil them b4 frying and/or "double-fry" them as in fry till very light brown then drain them then let them cool slightly which allows a lot of the remaining moisture to evaporate then re-fry till golden brown(they tend to brown more evenly) and they will turn out amazing! The salt in cold water pulls a little moisture out of the potatoes but you're also rinsing the starch from the outside of the cut potatoes which is always a good thing to do b4 frying them anyways. BTW that soup looks amazing!
Holy crap.saw one of your community members post....you guys are so humble and nice for being so popular. Never knew you were almost 80,000. Never change
Ok, so, y'all need a whisk. In order for the brownies to turn out like brownies you have to beat the eggs and sugar together until frothy. That is what creates the brownie flaky top we all think of as brownies. Right now I am still in the infant stage of growing and storing my own food so I don't really have advice when it comes to canning recipes yet.
In the coming times, you will have to make your own sugar, flour, and all the ingredients needed to make a brownie. True SCRATCH making! Despair is that hour to come. Internet gone. Those enslaved to technology, cuts them dead most. Saying it SIMPLE. No one wants to be alive then, coming sooner than you want. Any of you. What day is it not possible? Is you NOT ready, at all.
I enjoy watching y'all make the meals out of your vegetables and sauces you grow and can on your homestead. Doesn't get any fresher than that and you definitely know what goes in to what you're eating.
We came across your root cellar build video when we were researching underground fire shelters. We live in a heavily forested area in Australia where the risk of bush fires is very real. Love your work. We adore your kitchen lights. Thank you!
I learned something new: soaking the potatoes in salt water for crispness ... I always enjoy watching you two .... thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
We would have a meal made on our wood burner, for six hungry kiddos and two adults. I’d make a hearty veggie stew with dumplings. Hot chocolate with marshmallows. For dessert I’d make a pan of bread pudding from two day old homemade bread, our chicken eggs, chia seeds and top it with homemade elderberry sauce. All warm from the stove top. Night time snack would be chamomile tea and celery with peanut butter and raisins ....toads on a log treat.
Eric, You are good in "everything", even cooking! Some day, when you guys feel comfortable, sharebwith us your background! How come both of you are so "well rounded"!
Love your guy’s channel! I live in Fairbanks with my gf in a dry cabin so we know the struggles. Just made cowboy candy and we love it. Keep up the videos! We look forward to every one
My dad canned everything! He made jams and jellies in bulk every year or two. My favs were his grape and raspberry jams, I loved the foam on the top. I miss him so much, he also made the world's best biscuits. One desert you can can is cinnamon apples. He put a bit of green or red food coloring in them to make them look pretty. Delish!! That is one treat you can, can.
So many things to learn about off grid cooking and it all is so healthy. Root cellar is doing a great job keeping the veggies crisp. Another wonderful video
You know what you guys are really super cook cooks out of all the channels I watch- yours is the best,I'm amazed with your baking, did you work in a bakery at any time? I LOVE THIS CHANNEL,and I love how you care for your animals.....
Just discovered your channel and I am HOOKED. So much knowledge!! We're on our second year at our acreage and I have dreams of being as close to food-independent as possible, so it's really awesome to see how you practically use everything you grew and preserved. Beautiful!!
Best video content to date. Very well put together and tells a great story. You guys work well together. Looking forward to many years of watching your stories. Many thanks.
Love how everything doesnt have to be "perfect". I grew my own food this year, and it was very empowering not to hardly buy any produce. Next year I want to focus on preserving more of my harvest.
Wow i am so glad that you were able to grow and can a good deal of food that is the hardest thing for first time homesteaders and they give up more out of starvation. Great job
Show us more meals!!!!! I’m trying to become more self sufficient in the midst of normal society so the ideas are failing me 🧐 (it’s different in a situation like yalls) love the content!!!!!!

I know it's not all about age.
But I am Loving seeing people around my age choosing alternative lifestyles or choosing a life that is for them ! It's seriously so refreshing
"Dessert is unnecessary". Dang. Your self control is really admirable.
It must be so empowering and wonderful to go down to your root cellar and “shop”...knowing that it’s all the result of months and months of work!
Love the lights in your kitchen!
and be zero waste because you use jars instead of buying all that plastic gmo garbage! OH YA

Again you guys amaze me. Growing food and feeding yourselves when so many your age are at Starbucks and McDonalds
I love how he also cooks alongside you. Every man should know how to cook.
If that tastes half as good as it looks I'm jealous!!! Y'all wanna adopt a son...,? I'm only 41 and just retired from the Army 😂😂😂😂😂😂
☺️
Co grays on retirement @Mmarlow and I know right wish we had a root cellar
Ha ha ha 👏👍
Maybe they could adopt you as a dad 😃
😄 good one
You guys are doing great! I'm living vicariously through you. Keep it up.

Thank you for sharing how you use your stored goods - this is the part that so many homestead videos don't cover.
Y’all just amazed me how talented and coming up with all kinds of ideas and I totally enjoy y’all channel, keep up the good work 💕💕

I like the fact that you are always open to new ideas. You are well educated.
I can’t wait to see what you two cook up next. 🌸
Love your kitchen lights! And I'm quite jealous of your silent mornings with only the sound of the fire crackling.
A yummy video! I always wrap my French Press with a warm kitchen towel.
Hello Friends great idea! I preheat our coffee cups with hot water:)
On amazon is a insulated stainless steel French press.
I am so inspired to grow veggies and can and build a root cellar! Just too old and disabled. Enjoy your youth and working abilities and keep the videos coming!
I love how you light up your kitchen with decorative lights like a cloud of sparkle! Super cute! Thanks for sharing! I love your vids! Happy Holidays!
Shonita Garcia we light up a lot of our rooms in the same way using solar lights. Panel sits in the window. No bills. 😁
Jean Taylor
That’s a great idea for our enclosed porch, what type of lights did you buy?
Really enjoy the educational nature of your content. Thanks for sharing.
Fresh, home grown food prepared with care by your own hands. Nothing else in the world can compare!!
Love you guys. Gives me more go in our lower 48 homesteading we are doing.
So happy to see folks our age like you two

You kiddos are amazing, love love your canned foods- and your cooking!!
It doesn't get any more awesome then this,, gathering your harvest from your own root cellar from all your hard work growing and cooking.. :)
The only thing better than starting a nice fire in the dark is watching someone else start a nice fire in the dark with a cup of hot tea in your hand.

The meals looked great. All from your root cellar and mostly cooked on or in your wood stove is fantastic.
The best part of canning is eating the food come the cold weather. What a great success all around. Great video .
