    As a recovering alcoholic, we know that free time and boredom often leads to relapse. When I watch your videos I become motivated to do work and projects around my 14 acre property. Which keeps my mind occupied and busy. Thank you for the energy the two of you emit from your videos as you build your awesome buildings and property.

  • @mikebishop9868

    Eric, a few comments,from an engineering and safety standpoint.
    1, (already mentioned)
    - put an end cap on the spare diesel line from the tank, until required. A knock from an animal or bird would be a costly environmental mess.
    2, fit a bypass line around the tank filter so you can change/ clean filter without stopping generator and future oil boiler ( this is an optional suggestion) I have spend many years designing burner and gas flow control systems.
    3, the the generator radiator fan blows outside through those hinged slats. Why?
    It will induce a lower pressure zone in the building and hence “ suck in” cold air or as you have seem chimney smoke.
    You can then use that warm and dry fan air to provide some heat into the hut during winter.
    4 an intake “snorkel “ for the generator is a good idea. Bringing in cold dry combustion air from outside. Investigate “balance flues” for more reading
    Ps love what you both are doing.

    • @CrimeVid
      @CrimeVid 29 днів тому +3

      Yes, Mike's right about the fan set up, needs a dedicated fresh air supply.

    • @davidingram5336
      @davidingram5336 29 днів тому +2

      I agree about the radiator fan most likely being the problem. That will be clean air so why blow all that heat outside? I suspect if you just close the outside vent you will be fine. Especially since the generator will not have long, continuous cycles.

    • @user-ei3ce1ih2q
      @user-ei3ce1ih2q 28 днів тому

      Yah just close off the outside vent for the radiator. Free heat, kinda... Good news though. Your building is tight if that's causing negative pressure. I wouldn't worry about the intake unless your building is so tight just the intake creates negative pressure. That's highly unlikely, nothing's that tight. Plus you don't want icing carburator issues when it gets cold. Speaking of cold will the kero flow at sub zero temps? Luckily we don't get yer low temps so I know nothing about how well kero will flow in those temps. I know heating oil has issues at low temps and I believe kero is similar. If you didn't want the tank inside maybe you can build a shed around it and cut vents from the shop to heat the shed.

    • @ronconradt4427
      @ronconradt4427 24 дні тому +1

      I love the new seed starting room. As a guy who starts hundreds of plants during the early Wisconsin spring months, I hope you do not have the moisture problems I deal with when the plants reach approx six inches. You do have cross-ventilation and that should suffice. I get condensation on the windows so it’s a challenge. As usual, I wait patiently for your videos; they are wonderful. You build sturdy structures . Speaks well of you both. The video technique of the bird moving closer to focus is outstanding!

  • @organicfarmer1971
    @organicfarmer1971 Місяць тому +67

    Eric. Go with 3/8 fuel line or bigger if you have issues. 1/4 is fairly small for your gravity feed set up there. Need a fair bit of air intake as well. I'll get some pics and measurements from work tomorrow on this. We have louvered air intakes and running 4 cylinder Perkins diesels for back up power on chicken barns at work. Jeff.

    • @wmjohnson7063
      @wmjohnson7063 Місяць тому +12

      Yes as cold as it gets there bigger is better 1/2 inch . This is not gasoline it diesel oil it get very thick. I have the filter inside protected and easy to clean keep from freezing.

    • @mikeszymkowiak8520
      @mikeszymkowiak8520 Місяць тому +9

      Agree you will need plenty of fresh air intake for generator an other issue is to consider is the combustion on your log burner it will need plenty of fresh air to burn correctly. As they’re in the same room you may consider putting a room around generator.

    • @organicfarmer1971
      @organicfarmer1971 29 днів тому

      12x12 generator room has two 30x30 intakes. One is directly in front of rad and the other is on side walls. Generators always have block heaters plugged in and battery maintainer. Have pics i can send. Second generator shed set up very similar. Hope this helps.

    • @user-ei3ce1ih2q
      @user-ei3ce1ih2q 28 днів тому +1

      As I stated in another reply I'm concerned with the tank and lines outside in sub zero temps. Maybe even just below freezing. Flow is my concern, viscosity in cold temps. Heating oil has issues and kero I believe is essentially the same?

    I just heard another heartbreaking story about a family caught in Helene in our area and two were killed in a mudslide. Families were in the same house because they thought it was safer than theirs. But in the end theirs was saved but this one lost. Everyone made ir out but two of the men. My heart is breaking for all the suffering going on around our small towns. Your videos are so helpful and it helps to know life is going on. The holidays are coming but since we had no damage, I cannot celebrate because so many have lost everything. Please keep our people in western North Carolina in your prayers. Just a note from an old HVAC guy. If you haven't yet you need to have a vent on that outside fuel oil tank. From a quick google search an AI overview states "Venting a fuel oil tank is important to prevent the tank from rupturing or deforming. When fuel is consumed, a vacuum is created that can cause the tank to collapse. This can damage the tank and potentially lead to a fuel leak". I've been retired for about 15 years so I had to check because it's probably been twenty years since I installed and outside tank. Loved the trail cam videos at the beginning, especially the weasel. With his white belly I would assume that he's starting to change over to his winter white fur.

    Everytime I see the quonset hut since you insulated it, I think of Superman's "Fortress of Solitude." One thing I use to do with cabbage is to make freezer coleslaw, sounds weird, but it's really good and you can keep it frozen for up to a year. Lots of recipes on the internet for it. It's a pickled cabbage. It's crisp when it thaws and fresh. ❤❤To all Lori from Oregon

    Insulator here. You guys are one of my favorites on yt! Hilty makes a real nice foam gun you can use over head with bigger cans. When insulating a ceiling you want a small gap for moisture/condensation so mold/rot doesn't happen.

      @tr3vorb438 Місяць тому

      @ tylertexx9344 Agree. Will be difficult to add a gap now. I didn’t catch how the roof is constructed.

    • @DD-fm4pk
      @DD-fm4pk Місяць тому

      I was thinking that also about the gap. I didn't know if it was okay with a metal roof and being so far north.

    • @tr3vorb438
      @tr3vorb438 Місяць тому +1

      I checked the previous video of the roof construction. They used an adhesive water shield over OSB with metal roof on top. Another concern might be that even though there is metal roof flashing between the quanza building and seed room roof, wind driven rain or snow melt could get up under that flashing and into the roof structure. Just my opinion.

    Great content guys , love the show. We live in very cold climate also -20 to -40 °F. Be careful of the filter on bottom of tank as it could gell up or freeze up from condensation or water in diesel or #2 heating oil ( off road diesel ) .We cut 50/50 with kerosene or run straight kerosene. If in a pinch in super cold temps tilt tank in opposite direction of filter a bit and any water will run in opposite end. Usually only happens during a quick warm up or thawing event though. Good luck and great job all around.

    Hi Eric and Ariel!! I wanted to tell you that my wife and I believe you two put out the best videos! Perfect amount of scenery, with in-depth coverage of what you're working on. We also love the soft background music played on occasion (probably Ariel's choice 😊). Much better than listening to someone's favorite playlist...lol
    Love you guys, and keep up the great videos!! From, F&V in Ohio.

    Heartfelt thanks, Arielle & Eric, for igniting passion in our lives! We're overjoyed to have 1 adult hen and 3 thriving young ones in Texas, despite the loss of one. Nixina's remarkable egg production - 20 initially, a remarkable double-yolked egg, and daily delights since - brings immense joy. The chicken-keeping journey is incredibly fulfilling, spreading happiness and contentment. Our organic brown eggs are a true marvel. That mouthwatering lasagna was a treat! Wishing you a tranquil winter season filled with love and light. I look forward to your upcoming videos. Your endearing cat is a sweet delight.
    May you be blessed with health, safety, and happiness.
