I actually remember being able to watch all three endings on a old spongebob dvd me and my sister used to own, and we would constantly watch it Until my brother stole the dvd and it was lost in the void we call his room... But I always thought it was just a dvd exclusive, I never realized it was actually a part of a tv special event, but seeing this video was honestly really awesome!
The DVD had all three endings. I didn’t, and still to this day, don’t have cable, so I didn’t get to witness this as it happened. Still, it was pretty cool what networks did to make things more entertaining and exciting in the past.
Actually watched the orignal airing on Google Drive. I didn't see the endings. Some moments were funny like Patrick's face being covered by a skull whilst a buzzer sound is heard when he never got chosen and the epic You Wish opening or Patchy breaking his back while exclaiming "ROLL THE TAPE" and later goes like "OH GOD!". The reason I don't want to see the endings is that they make me cry every time when the Dutchman eats them. I have the google drive if you wanna see it, the endings start at 18:27. (Credit to Spongy Gaming for the orignal broadcast)
How would Squidward’s wish of having never met them still end with him getting eaten too? Also just seeing their clothes on the plate like that was unsettling compared to Spongebob’s ending where they’re just trying to get away, implying they’d **eventually** get eaten. (with the benefit of the doubt that maybe they’d still escape somehow)
I was like 4 or 5 in 2001, but I vividly remember asking my mom if I can call and vote and she said no because long-distance phone calls cost extra. I live in Canada, so yeah, my mom would have been charged for an international phone call. And we didn't get dial-up internet until 2002 or 2003.
My dad loves this episode. I think the fact that kids could pick the ending is a great idea, and makes the show all that more aware of the fans and children! It's pretty cute!

Damn, the Squidward and Patrick ones are brutal mainly because Spongebob, Patrick, and Squidward got eaten. Thank god the voters picked Spongebob and for the ending we have now in that episode!
Well, I think in USA they did vote spongebob, but you won't be impressed if you saw the episode in South America, they aired Patrick or Squidward's ending, too.
I remember the night this special premiered on Nick. I was in the 4th grade. My brother and I were at our friend’s house, and we couldn’t stop laughing. Between the Leedles, “You’re good,” the Fly of Despair, the Perfume Department, and the 3 endings my ribs and my face were in pain from laughing so hard. It still remains as my 2nd favorite SB episode, only behind Band Geeks. Good memories. 😆
Imagine when Spongebob gets his driving license and becomes a star fry cook, Patrick gets a life-time supply of ice cream, Squidward becomes a famous musician and artist, Mr. Krabs moves away with all of his retirement savings and money he made with the Krusty Krab, Sandy becomes a famous scientist and kara-tay instructor, Mrs. Puff retires and marries Mr. Krabs, Larry wins the weight contest and becomes Chief Lifeguard of Goo Lagoon, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy get out of Shady Shouls finally giving their rings to Spongebob and Patrick their biggest fans, The Flying Dutchman’s curse finally ends and he is now a mortal once again, Pearl graduates and becomes popular and finally meets her biological birth mother; a whale, Squlliam loses all his money and moves in with Squidward; where they finally become real friends, Gary becomes real King of the Snails, Bubble Bass receives the rare mint condition of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy Issue #32, and finally, Plankton is given the formula of the Krabby Patty willingly by Mr. Krabs, and he and Karen become the co-managers of the Krusty Krab. I don’t think this would ever make it to the show since kids wouldn’t want it to end and it isn’t really canon, but these would all be the perfect endings for every character, even Squlliam.
This is the best comment on here. It is so sweet and wholesome. I personally HATED the Shanghaied episode. As a kid and also as an adult. Really brings out the toxicness in me...And I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way... These sweet endings for the characters won't ever happen though. Unless a fan animates it that is! ;)
Imagine if you called the original number and it was an automated voice of pachy the pirate going “if you’re calling to cast a vote for the ending of Shanghaid contest, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!? THAT WAS YEARS AGO! Get rid of this number, don’t call it again!”

So you’re telling me that if Patrick or Squidward had won the votes, the episode would’ve had a completely different ending forever, and I would have never known about it all those times that I watched the episode as a kid
Why do people dislike perfectly great videos? Whats wrong with it? He explains everything, and shows everything, with no delays. Cuts to the chase, and deserves a like rating
What they could have said (edit). Patrick could have wished for ghost repelling gum and squidward could have wished for the Dutchman's ship somewhere else at the beginning of the episode and not their houses.
My version should've been like this: PATRICK'S ENDING ___________________ Patrick: I wish for gum! (Spongebob, Patrick and Squidward chew bubble gum and then they blow the bubble gum so big that they fly away back home) Trio: HOORAY! Spongebob: We're back home! Squidward: Uh, Spongebob, do you see something up there? (Spongebob, Patrick and Squidward see the ship) Flying Dutchman: You can't just escape me like that! I haven't eaten in a whole week before. Patrick: Well your diary doesn't care about anything right now! We're safe! Flying Dutchman: Fine, let me move my ship back to scaring people. (Flying Dutchman then gets the ship the move back to scaring the seven seas.) SQUIDWARD'S ENDING _______________________ Squidward: I wish I haven't dealt with these two right now. (Spongebob and Patrick teleport back home, the same for Squidward too.) Squidward: Aw come on! Squidward: I'm still neighbors with them can you make me have another wi- (Flying Dutchman burns Squidward with his fire snot while Squidward screams) Squidward: ow.
I like to think that whichever ending won would have given the episode a happy ending, and the two alternate endings of the characters getting eaten were made to make the people who voted for them feel better about the fact that they didn't win. There's no way that the Spongebob writers were going to risk the permanent deaths of the 3 main characters. EDIT: A lot of people are pointing out the fact that Spongebob has little to no continuity and that the deaths of the characters would have not mattered. That may be the case, but still, how traumatic would it be if you were a kid and the official end of the episode had Spongebob and his friends getting EATEN (especially if the episode was a rerun without any of the Voting segments)?
It's easy to retcon a kids show like this, hell, there isn't even any serialization to the show. They can do whatever the fuck they want each episode without any consequences affecting future episodes.
@@thevioletskull8158 If either of those endings won, I think they would have changed the Spongebob ending to everyone getting eaten, and they would have changed the winning ending to everyone getting home safely, but with the winner wishing for it instead of Spongebob.
So I wasn’t crazy in thinking there were multiple endings for this episode all these years. Sadly I didn’t experience it on TV cuz I wasn’t born yet, but I saw it on the DVD and vaguely remember it.
That's odd... I remember seeing these alternate endings, even when I didn't watch that event live... Maybe some reruns ran the whole event instead of just with the chosen ending
0:11 Fun fact: “Ahoy” was actually the preferred over-the-phone greeting by Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. It was Thomas Edison who suggested the word “Hello”. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahoy_(greeting)
HOLY FRICK, you have over 706k subs now. I used to watch your GF vids religiously before you even had 100k. You have come so far, matured to much, and sound way more natural and comfortable. Keep up the amazing work and high quality videos!
Shangheid is actually my favorite episode, and it’s pretty exciting to see cool lost media like this where you could actually influence the episodes ending based on your own decision. I find that really cool, and I wish they brought that back in future episodes, which would actually probably be easier to implement with texting your decision to a number instead. Overall very cool :)
IMHO, the strangest part isn’t that they had the contest and put the ending into everyone’s hands. The strangest part is that this contest happened on March 9, 2001, the episode was re-run the next day on March 10, and then apparently… they didn’t re-air it again for nearly 2.5 years until summer 2003. That’s bizarre to me. Why have everyone pick an ending only to not air the episode for 2.5 years anyway? Not to mention I remember this episode (but not the contest) so vividly that I have to believe they aired it a ton in 2002… but apparently not? At the same time, the hiatus adds to the eerieness of this episode, and probably helped everyone forget about the contest altogether. I know I certainly did!
I watched SpongeBob as a kid in a Spanish local channel and I remember watching all the endings at some point and the winner flag and stuff but I didn't know people voted I saw the episode years after it aired but it's cool to hear about how it happened in the moment
I remember when they did this with the ending of Total Drama Island where you could pick whether Gwen or Owen won... you know, except the fact they only made Owens ending since they planned for him to win anyway and your vote didn’t matter. I know this because I was a big fan of the show when it was on and I really wanted Gwen to win. So did most everyone. I checked and Gwen was winning every time I checked, even as the episode was premiering..... and when they showed the winner, they switched the scores so Owen got Gwens votes and vice versa. I was so upset and disappointed. This is why spongebob is still adored, the actors and writers actually care for their kid fans opinions.
They could definitely do something like this today. Especially with the prevalence of social media. Though, using Nickelodeon’s app as they do for the Kids Choice Awards would probably be the best choice for an episode like this. Honestly, I’d love to see kids of today vote on another ending to Shanghaied! Would they also pick Spongebob? Would they go for Squidward or Patrick? Who knows? But if it’s not something like a second chance Shanghaied, it would definitely make the most sense to do this with another Spongebob episode. It’s still undisputedly the most popular Nicktoon airing. If it was another show, Loud House or Casa Grandes, it would have too many options for voting. Which means more endings would be lost. Spongebob, with its limited cast, is ideal for stuff like this.
So, I am from Spain, and I do remember seeing this episode, but here it was slightly different. Because the choice was already made, Patchy talked about how this was the ending we picked, the voting part didn't happen, but we did have Patchy talking directly to us hyping the "this was what you wanted" part up. It was basically the same episode as Shanghaid, but with Patchy talking in between. I remember it being kinda weird
I didn't know about this until recently - I had only ever seen the Spongebob ending (as that was the only one that ever aired) and it was only recently that I found out about these endings... never knew they were a thing...
Me too, but only saw Spongebob's wish in the DVD as the other ones should have included the trio being chased by the Dutchman in the alternate endings, they should have not let the Dutchman eat them.
I remember El Tigre doing something similar where the viewers had to go online and pick between a good ending or an evil ending for an episode. The good ending won.
I do remember being super little and scratching my head about the thought of whether or not this episode had more than one ending but now that this vid is out it really cleared the room, thanks
It's called "vore" and a lot of the cucks who work on this show shove that shit into it. Especially modern Spongebob. And it is fucking disturbing and should disturb you as an adult. This episode made me hate the Flying Dutchman as a kid
@lryuzaki1192 relatable, but I cried when the Dutchman ate them when I saw it years ago so yeah, I hated the Dutchman too. I later got desensitized years after, and realized those scenes were disgusting.
Once this event was conducted, Patchy's voice in these scenes was dubbed over what he originally said in the "You Wish" event. A lot of you that have probably noticed this already, but if you watch the episode today, you'll notice that the way Patchy's mouth moves does not even closely match up with the words he speaks. The job with dubbing Patchy's voice for those scenes was done terribly.
Also for the people who was still there in 2001, the voting results have the two least requested endings played first after Patchy sees that the two least voted characters didn't get the most requests and the most requested ending played after the two least requested ending.
Does anyone else remember master control on cartoonnetwork. You voted for a team and the team that won got to choose the cartoon lineup for the afternoon. That was my favorite segment back in the day.
I actually still own the spongebob dvd “sea stories” that was themed after this episode. And it included all three endings as bonus features.
That is sooooooo *cool*

Patrick could have wished for ghost repelling gum and squidward could have wished for the Dutchman's ship somewhere else at the beginning of the episode and not their houses.
I figured that out after I posted
Me: i wish the Dutchman hated eating sponge starfish and squid and would refuse to be within a 30 mile radius of it
that you should change the number of emojis you posted to 1
My version should've been like this:
PATRICK'S ENDING
___________________
Patrick: I wish for gum!
(Spongebob, Patrick and Squidward chew bubble gum and then they blow the bubble gum so big that they fly away back home)
Trio: HOORAY!
Spongebob: We're back home!
Squidward: Uh, Spongebob, do you see something up there?
(Spongebob, Patrick and Squidward see the ship)
Flying Dutchman: You can't just escape me like that! I haven't eaten in a whole week before.
Patrick: Well your diary doesn't care about anything right now! We're safe!
Flying Dutchman: Fine, let me move my ship back to scaring people.
(Flying Dutchman then gets the ship the move back to scaring the seven seas.)
SQUIDWARD'S ENDING
_______________________
Squidward: I wish I haven't dealt with these two right now.
(Spongebob and Patrick teleport back home, the same for Squidward too.)
Squidward: Aw come on!
Squidward: I'm still neighbors with them can you make me have another wi-
(Flying Dutchman burns Squidward with his fire snot while Squidward screams)
Squidward: ow.
The brand name "Ghost repelling gum" is actually funny tbh
It’s a cartoon. If they got eaten they wouldn’t have permanently killed off all the characters bro. You crazy!
nobody cares about continuity mate, that's the dark truth
But what if squidward or patrick’s endings won?
So basically “you wish” is just a spongebob story mode
Or like netflix interactive cartoons.
Fun Fact: I have a Spongebob DVD that has the episode, and you can choose which of the three endings you want to see.
They did this kind of thing all the way back in 2001? Interesting..
Chips Hello
HOLY FRICK, you have over 706k subs now. I used to watch your GF vids religiously before you even had 100k. You have come so far, matured to much, and sound way more natural and comfortable. Keep up the amazing work and high quality videos!
Shangheid is actually my favorite episode, and it’s pretty exciting to see cool lost media like this where you could actually influence the episodes ending based on your own decision. I find that really cool, and I wish they brought that back in future episodes, which would actually probably be easier to implement with texting your decision to a number instead. Overall very cool :)
I saw this in Nicktendo’s video
I used to have the DVD "Sea stories" and it had all 3 alternate endings
I saw those scenes during a deleted scene compilation and was wondering why there were two other endings from that one episode
I had this on dvd when I was a kid all three versions where on the disc.
Cool
Dang I thought this would be a review on the episode SpongeBob’s Greatest Moments...
Just watched the clip of the alternative endings. I wanted to see the comments, but it got COPPAd. >_
Ugh, screw COPPA.
@@moviemaniac9034 i agree
COPPA goes on the Dutchman's plate to get eaten for dinner.
I saw this live man! I completely forgot about it this whole time, thanks for unlocking that memory
Here’s a big coincidence:
The episode Shanghaied was on this morning before I went school
Last time I was this early, I was born prematurely.
Same, good thing only is the defect was asthma, but my diugh is only 4 inches
In Mexico we got all the endings lmao viva México
I remember seeing the Squidward ending in Mexico. I thought it was just an alternative ending over there.
This happens to be my favorite episode of Spongebob. I didn’t know about this when I used to watch it. This just makes it even more great for me.
I love explanations of this Spongebob episode, viewers in other countries like me in Canada, we only ever saw the chosen ending.
You gotta love how his hook also moves when he's on quote
I didn't know about this until recently - I had only ever seen the Spongebob ending (as that was the only one that ever aired) and it was only recently that I found out about these endings... never knew they were a thing...
For the love of...
The DVD that has all three endings is called SEA STORIES
How am I the only one who has it?
I have the DVD too.
Me too, but only saw Spongebob's wish in the DVD as the other ones should have included the trio being chased by the Dutchman in the alternate endings, they should have not let the Dutchman eat them.
If this still existed, then the birthday video would be a theory
I remember El Tigre doing something similar where the viewers had to go online and pick between a good ending or an evil ending for an episode. The good ending won.
Wait, really? Where can I watch it?
Thanks for talking over the alternate endings you landlover
I do remember being super little and scratching my head about the thought of whether or not this episode had more than one ending but now that this vid is out it really cleared the room, thanks
Plot Twist: They didn’t actually care about the votes they just aired whatever they was going to air anyway
Yup I remember this.
The Patrick and Squidward endings are exactly the reason I feel so disturbed as an adult.
I always wondered why this particular, seemingly normal (but still funny) episode had Patchy segments. But now I understand!
If you wanna see the other 2 endings, they’re available on the spongebob first 100 episodes dvd collection, it was really neat!
Also for the people who was still there in 2001, the voting results have the two least requested endings played first after Patchy sees that the two least voted characters didn't get the most requests and the most requested ending played after the two least requested ending.
I was like "How come I don't have any memory of this?" And then he said "2001" and then I was like "Ooh, right, that's the year I was born."
I wish I could wish for the internet to stop being so negative.
Im sorry but i feel like there's something wrong with your grammar..
MPDeity, so what did I do to you?
@@KoolTimYT just ignore theses idiots
Does anyone else remember master control on cartoonnetwork. You voted for a team and the team that won got to choose the cartoon lineup for the afternoon. That was my favorite segment back in the day.
