@@captiosus_77 I wonder if it would be the same on PC or since the fps would be much higher (and non VRR monitors are quite rare nowadays) it would not be problematic 🤔… unless Alex Battaglia is already working on it
Another example of why VRR is so important, especially for games like this where camera panning plays a big role. Series X with an LG OLED is clearly the best option.
it seems redundant but i wish it was a system level option to turn super sampling /down sampling off for 1080p users pn PS5 , FPS would shoot threw the roof on most titles , not all titles need 4k sampled down for sharpness , i understand PS5 & xbox x etc are for 4k gaming but still, even 1080p will see a difference from unsteady 60 to above ,especially since 1080p screens dont have VRR anyway

One to avoid on all consoles unless you have a VRR display on Series or are happy with running the PS4 version on PS5 which is the only smooth 60fps version on console. Hopefully the devs can re-address the resolutions and make the game acceptable.
It’s baffling that more games don’t offer a drop in resolution to fix frame rate issues. This game doesn’t need to be in 4k. An option for 1440p/60 seems like an obvious fix. I’m very glad that I went PC last year. I’m getting around 200fps on a 3080 with this game.
Same, I’m running a 3060 with a 1440p monitor. It’s literally the perfect resolution. I still love my PS5 tho and Sony’s exclusives but if I can play a game on PC, instead of PS5 then I will.
Frame rate counter may read 200 fps but it doesn’t play that way. Game has constant stutter on pc.played it on both and Xbox version actually played better than a 144hz gsynced pc instance.
That stutter is present on the PC version, but doesn't hurt the game as much since you can play it at 120+ FPS. On my 3080 in 4K, I was locked to 144 save for small little hiccups.
They should have had a "1440p" Filmic mode that requires VRR. Runs at a locked 48hz (double the film grain frequency) with a moderately large amount of high quality motion blur.
@@ddp5406 thanks for the reply, however nothing happens when I hit options on the title screen. I just have the 3 dots next to wishlist that says "follow, personalisation settings and health/ratings/privacy/ terms
Things like lines, scratches, dust, and so on, are NOT part of the term "grain". - Film-grain are the actual "analog pixels" that appear on film from the chemical reaction. - Anything else, like scratches, dust, and things like that, which are actually considered a kind of "damage", usually get onto the film afterward from simply being exposed to the general environment, as obviously there's dust and hair in the air, as well as getting damaged from physical contact. - To put it a different way: Grain (as in, the "noise") is SUPPOSED to be there, but anything else (like scratches and dust) is NOT.
Lol this guy says that VRR on Series consoles fix the experience almost completely but "prefer" to play a nerfed PS4 Pro version on PS5? What the heck! This clearly shows the DF bias towards Sony. Even their most recent contributors are heirs of this shit.
Until there is a patch to make the game deaf and dumb too, I prefer to RE-play Ghost Of Tsushima, even on a PS4 Pro than play this overrated piece of shitty-art.
I tried this on Series X. Felt bad. I will try with VRR turned on though. Annoying that series S, a $200 cheaper machine, gives you better FPS. I'll take 60 FPS over high resolution anytime. maybe they will update this.
Would look better if they add colour on the blood like a pop art poster. For me i am seeing a lot of the Tomb raider 2013 game here not the game style its the art style in some of the maps in game
The push for 4k in gaming is still a fool's errand; the public's refusal to accept reasonable resolutions continues to make a dog's dinner of console gaming.
This game is so awesome . It definitely seems like developers didn’t optimize greatly for the newer console systems. It’s ashamed but still a great game overall.
Why bother with "newer" consoles if the genious programmers sell more on PC. Consoles will sell the same run at 60, 30 or 15fps who cares about PS2060S having THE REAL THING: RTX2060s, or better yet GTX 970, the recomended for this brutal and huge game.
If you set your Xbox Seriex X resolution to 1080p, can you get smooth/locked 60fps gameplay? (that seems to be effectively what running PS4 code on PS5 does)
It would be nice to have a lower resolution full screen hfr mode. With heavy post processing temporal acumulation upscaling at high frame rates does wonders. For ps5 it would make sense for a game like this to run at a minimum dynamic resolution of 720p 120fps consistently and to upscale that to the tv's native res.
Ghost of Tsushima: Mobile Edition. They should've lowered the resolution on PS5 and Series X to get higher frames. This obsession with 4K in gaming is laughable, majority of people don't even game at 4K, they'd rather player at 1440p with higher frames and it still looks good
I turn off camera motion blur in almost every game because my eyes seem to get tired from it quickly. But in this one I find it both surprising and annoying that there is no motion blur at all.
I’ve been playing on Series X, and the performance is pretty abysmal. I can only imagine it’s poor optimization, as there are plenty of equally-demanding games that have no trouble running at a locked 60fps.
At first I thought it was the game, but after trying out the PC version for a bit it's definitely an Xbox problem. Pretty disappointing as I was really looking forward to this one.
I've been looking for some information online and there is none. So if someone can answer me this: Was there a patch or something? because I'm playing this on Xbox Series X as of August 2022 and its locked 30 fps, no way to change it or unlock it. I have turned both film grain and bloom to test if that was locking it but it is not.
Why don't you guys do a side by side fps comparison? Specially in such a game where the resolution is same & locked on both consoles. This type of games are great for a head to head comparison.
Another PS5 vs Xbox Series X without any effort put into actually showing a side-by-side comparison of the FPS drops on each console. I guess it's too much effort for DF to try and align footage for an objective comparison these days.
Game was a visual masterpiece, combat got boring after the half way mark. I was thinking like "Can I just keep running and moving towards the end already and skip the combat, I wanna see the environments already!"
I just use it for the 50 pts towards Xbox Rewards each day :) . Get one achievement another 50 pts etc. Really handy to just get free Gamepass all the time using points.
Great game but had to play on PC - on xbox I just couldn't get over the stutters. Btw easy mode is really easy - one slice and most enemies are down. Played until chapter 5 on hard but then changed to normal because it was getting too hard and time consuming
Strange. I'm playing on an RX470 paired with an i3 6100 and it usually runs with 60 fps in 1440p on ultra settings. Sometime it's only 45-50 but with VRR it's not noticable. I thought the consoles would run this game with 60 fps without an effort.
I have been waiting for this. I have been loving this game, but it's the first I stopped playing because the uneven frame rate drove me crazy. Even with vrr on my c1.
The performance issues really do hamper the enjoyability and immersion for sure, surprising for a game that has so much pared back. The character animations are a little janky and could be more fluid as well, i hate to compare but i cant help but think of how ghost of tsushima excells far above where this game struggles
i played on X and have a VRR ... never noticed any visual hiccups. the game is beautiful! i recommend it. I think he's over blowing the FPS issues. It's not a fast paced high intensity moving game...Don't let DF's stringent analysis have you miss out on a good game
Sadly on PC I can confirm this is yet another UE4 port that exhibits the classic Shader Compilation stutter we’ve grown accustomed to. If I had a nickel for every UE4 PC port that had either Asset Streaming or Shader Compilation stutter (or both) I’d have like 75 cents by now.
Played it on PC, finished it in one sitting (hardest difficulty). Theres a fair bit to like, but the combat is pretty janky, especially the animations and the performance is less than ideal. My 3080 couldn't even manage a consistent 140fps at 1620p max settings. For a game that looks like this, that's not good (also typical UE4 stutter).
I'd actually prefer to keep the comparatively rare option to play with a variable framerate averaging around 45fps with occasional stutter (more like the PC experience for many). Stutter is one thng but 30fps (at least in titles like Cyberpunk and GTAV) is close to unplayable.
You can try the zoom on your TV. Just zoom in enough to fill the screen and no more. You’ll lose some picture on both sides, but the game is still very playable.
Well since it's not a simple black border the game is actually rendering much less pixels, expect performance to tank further should that ever be a option.
Great video thanks I think the game need more optimization and will be great if we have for all of the games a lock 60 fps mode for smooth play and other modes to push the limit in the gaming machines and pc thanks again super video like always
I've been playing it on my 1080p living room TV and not noticed any problems 😁 Personally I just don't get the big deal about resolution, I'd much rather the devs put a 1080p performance mode on every game and run at a locked 60fps.... 4K/8K can wait until the next gen.
Turning off those visual options actually makes it look even MORE "clinical". So in a way you could call it appropriate... I feel like that is what the game would've looked like had the creators not been as artistically insistent.

I completed the game last week. The FPS drops are very noticeable during boss fights. Especially the last boss was fighting in slow motion. Hope for a patch so I can replay it properly. Have fun!
I'm in the same boat. After watching this I turned off VRR on my display and woooow, immediate frame drops and stuttering. The optimization for XSX and PS5 is just awful. I get that its an indie game but man. Pretty sad when Series S and PS4 BC is considered the most "optimal" ways to play for people without VRR capable displays.
@@captiosus_77 I wonder if it would be the same on PC or since the fps would be much higher (and non VRR monitors are quite rare nowadays) it would not be problematic 🤔… unless Alex Battaglia is already working on it
Is it possible to turn off the black and white?
It wouldn't be a bad idea to play it on a black mirror screen either.
Is a beautiful game but only thing with Kurosawa movies is the black and white (and not entirely, Kurosawa has a strong sense of light and shadow within the narrative). Kurosawa camera work is dynamic af and this game use a ver slow and static camera.
Aaaanyway, besides the nitpicking, looks amazing
I don't get why they keep doing this where Kurosawa just means black and white samurais, same with tsushima, it's like game designers have no art sensibilities and miss everything from the movies
@@uwu-jv2jn yep. For example, Ghost of Tsushima understand better the Kurosawa cinematography and the narrative. This is just samurai game with a black and white filter aesthetic.
I insist, is a very pretty game but stop with "Kurosawa blablabla". No, it isn't at all
One to avoid on all consoles unless you have a VRR display on Series or are happy with running the PS4 version on PS5 which is the only smooth 60fps version on console. Hopefully the devs can re-address the resolutions and make the game acceptable.
Do you just buy the PS4 version in the psn store for it to run The PS4 pro version on aps5 via backward compatibility?
@@justinbezaire8115 most games come with both versions, unless there is a $10 upgrade fee if u only have the ps4 version
The one X version looks great within VRR
How does it run on the base ps4? Is it playable?
2304x964 have more pixels than 1080p?
yes. You could of just done the math
They should have had a "1440p" Filmic mode that requires VRR.
Runs at a locked 48hz (double the film grain frequency) with a moderately large amount of high quality motion blur.
How do you play the PS4 pro version on ps5?
go to the title, press the options button, go to versions, select and download ps4 version
They missed out big on having the blood be bright red.
VRR for the win, again. Glad I saved up for that new tv.
I tried this on Series X. Felt bad. I will try with VRR turned on though. Annoying that series S, a $200 cheaper machine, gives you better FPS. I'll take 60 FPS over high resolution anytime. maybe they will update this.
Oliver when the Series S is actually the BETTER machine : "Wait... that's ILLEGAL !!!" 😂😂😂
Thank God no motion blur, that's actually not a negative point but a big plus in my book!
A real shame that there is no motion blur, it would have made the game look even more incredible
(that seems to be effectively what running PS4 code on PS5 does)
No,it still renders the game at 4k
I wish it worked like that, lower the resolution and it gets higher visual and better performance.
No, that only changes the scaled output resolution of the console. Games still render at whatever resolution the developers set.
The characters look like they’re sliding across the ground when moving/fighting. Looks a bit weird with the aesthetic.
Yeah... The animations are bad and especially clash with the environment
Definitely should have made the whole thing more grounded. If they're going for a homage to old Japanese movies this is so important.
Reminds me a lot of the camera system and animation in Ico
Wait for the final dev kits on Xbox that will unlock the full 12 TF.

This runs at a locked 60fps at max settings on my old gtx1060 so why can't it do that on the series consoles?
Optimization
Why don't you guys do a side by side fps comparison? Specially in such a game where the resolution is same & locked on both consoles. This type of games are great for a head to head comparison.
will be playing this later today, looks like great lil samurai adventure
Please check Arma Reforged on pc n xbox
PLEASE do a tech analysis of Kao the Kangaroo!!!!!
ngl a 30 fps option would make it actually look like an old movie
So happy that I don’t notice all the things that DF does. That way, I can actually enjoy these games instead of critiquing every frame.
So why do you watch their videos when that’s the bulk of their content?
should have a 24 fps cap, with per object motion blur
I’m glad I watched this video as I discovered I don’t want to play this game. It was useful, so I thank you my good sir.
StutTEARing PC Master Race. Ghost Of Tsushima greets you
Another PS5 vs Xbox Series X without any effort put into actually showing a side-by-side comparison of the FPS drops on each console. I guess it's too much effort for DF to try and align footage for an objective comparison these days.
Played this on PC (RTX 2060) and my only complaint is the lack of photo mode
Vrr is the best thing ever! I love my lg c1
now I want to see this game running in 480i on a wide CRT display.
Really enjoyed this on pc & it ran great at 4k max settings, not something I would usually consider buying but that’s the beauty of game pass .
Great game but had to play on PC - on xbox I just couldn't get over the stutters. Btw easy mode is really easy - one slice and most enemies are down. Played until chapter 5 on hard but then changed to normal because it was getting too hard and time consuming
The game also plays nicely on an ultrawide monitor with no letter boxing.
If Ghost of Tsushima had a baby with LIMBO
So glad it isn't utterly ruined by bloody motion blur.
The performance issues really do hamper the enjoyability and immersion for sure, surprising for a game that has so much pared back. The character animations are a little janky and could be more fluid as well, i hate to compare but i cant help but think of how ghost of tsushima excells far above where this game struggles
That said, it was so odd to me how the combat is very polished in Ghost, but all the traversal is either janky or there's clipping everywhere.
@@Ayoul Was noticeable to me as well, but I think preventing clipping in all possible scenarios an open world game is a ton of work
i played on X and have a VRR ... never noticed any visual hiccups. the game is beautiful! i recommend it. I think he's over blowing the FPS issues. It's not a fast paced high intensity moving game...Don't let DF's stringent analysis have you miss out on a good game
PS5 in BC mode is always rock solid.
The consoles deserve a patch. I'm getting a solid 60 FPS on a gtx1660, minus the typical UE4 stutter
Controversial but for a game so heavily trying to emulate a film, why not include a stable 30fps mode as well?
On PC, you can lock the framerate to arbitrary numbers. There is even a 24 fps mode.
Good video man!!!!! GG
Is the UE4 stutter bc shaders are not precompiled at runtime? I remember Psychonauts 2 had stutter issues even on PC but its pretty much fixed now.
I have the PlayStation 5 version and think of any of this while playing or expect a Digital Foundry video about it😅.
The developers should of made the blood bright red it would contrast with the black n white
I'd actually prefer to keep the comparatively rare option to play with a variable framerate averaging around 45fps with occasional stutter (more like the PC experience for many). Stutter is one thng but 30fps (at least in titles like Cyberpunk and GTAV) is close to unplayable.
I wish there was an option to turn off the letterboxing 🤷♀️
You can try the zoom on your TV. Just zoom in enough to fill the screen and no more. You’ll lose some picture on both sides, but the game is still very playable.
Well since it's not a simple black border the game is actually rendering much less pixels, expect performance to tank further should that ever be a option.
Great video thanks I think the game need more optimization and will be great if we have for all of the games a lock 60 fps mode for smooth play and other modes to push the limit in the gaming machines and pc thanks again super video like always
I've been playing it on my 1080p living room TV and not noticed any problems 😁
Personally I just don't get the big deal about resolution, I'd much rather the devs put a 1080p performance mode on every game and run at a locked 60fps.... 4K/8K can wait until the next gen.
No matter what the game will render internally at its set resolution so I call cap
Devs pls make a colour version of the game... !
No motion blur? With this old school aesthetic??
Fail.
Turning off those visual options actually makes it look even MORE "clinical". So in a way you could call it appropriate...
I feel like that is what the game would've looked like had the creators not been as artistically insistent.
I don't know why this game isn't 30fps with motion blur. It goes for the cinematic look anyway and camera is pretty much static all the time.
The fact that 4K, 60 isn’t possible on a B&W indie side-scroller is a condemnation of this gen’s false promises.
No you
