- Trek to Yomi (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S/One) is a flawed game that still managed to keep me interested. We need more games like this, even with the imperfections. Let's chat.

I don't why I keep thinking "Shrek Toyomi"
Lmao
Shrek 2. Yomi
Because you should !
Now I can't un hear it 😂
🎵Somebody once told me to check out "Shrek Toyomi"
Their name, as always, is Jank Bald Dino 😝 🎶
I'm already about halfway through my second playthrough. Trek to Yomi is more of an artistic, playable experience, not so much a game.
This title is REALLY special. Easily worth the 20 bucks and a billion percent worth the download from game pass.
This is the kind of experience where the audio and artistic design are what sells it.
The camera angles etc are awesome too
Honestly, if you're sold on the audio and artistic design here, you should check out Gris if you haven't. Beautiful game.
@@andothersuchnonsense2685 Hell yeah thanks for the recommendation! Gonna check it out now!
Edit: Looks gorgeous, and waddya know steam has it on sale right now 😍😍😍
Downloading now! Thanks again! 😊
@@entysing6780 honeslty in terms of audio and visual design Gris is phenomenal. Hope your enjoying it!
Disagree, game is trash 🗑
I really enjoyed Trek to Yormi. The combats basic but the cinimstic style and tone is stunning! It's like being in a mini samuari movie.
Jake this is not a AAA developer as you mentioned. Yes, the combat is not perfect, but good to see that you still appreciate the other aspects of the game… I’m loving it!
I love Trek to Yomi. It's right up my alley. An absolutely beautiful world to explore, awesome music and dialogue, great story, and while the combat isn't particularly deep it's fine for what it is.
The Perfect birthday gift 🎁!
Thank you for this video Uncle Jake ❤😂
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your influence and disposition on The gaming community at least in terms of creating a wholeness to your gameranx cohorts
Very much appreciate that you get what I'm trying to do. Thanks!!
Played it and agree with you 100% I dont consider myself a hardcore trophy hunter but I do try to platinum majority of the games I buy and play and even though I was anticipating this game because of how it looked, when I finally ended up playing it, I was a bit letdown. Don’t get me wrong I still enjoyed some aspects of the game but it just didn’t end up clicking for me so I stopped after 1 play through which for me is enough.
"Trek to Yomi" seems to me a spiritual successor to Broderbund's "Karateka" meets "Sifu" & "Nidhogg".
In so far as the combat, I think the problem may be a lack of "momentum" that is a part of Kurosawa films choreography.
"Sifu" gets the momentum right, and "Nidhogg" would be a good idea for a Vs mode!
I just got it, played the intro and it was intriguing. Hope to see it through soon
So glad you mentioned Shadow complex as this is a gem of a game and showed what can be done when people have a genuine passion for what they are making.
Beautiful game, really makes me want to see a modern take on FlashBack or Out Of This World.
@@kise_ryota wasn’t expecting that either! Great time to be a gamer. Our generation finally grew up and is now making games.
YES! bought it today and I am really enjoying it so far! Shame to see some big outlets not liking it
You bought it? Wow.
It's on gamepass..
@@DawidDgk Maybe he doesn't have a Xbox
Which are who?
@@IngeniousReaper he never replied, I think you killed him by exploding his brain with that
@@DawidDgk lol what’s a gamepass
I liked this game, overwhelmingly because of the atmosphere and storytelling and cinematography. I didn't hate the combat, but didn't love it - your comment about input windows not feeling right was spot on. Overall, a really good experience.
I like this game, started playing it today🙂
i've been having my eye on this for a while and have wanted a small digestible linear experience
It really is stunning! Damn! The artwork is Oscar material!
Thanks Jake, will check it out 👍
I wasn't sold on this game when it was revealed, after seeing some negative reactions I figured I had made the right call to ignore this game but seeing your, and SkillUp's reaction, I actually think I'm way more interested in this game than I thought! Will be downloading on gamepass to at least try it.
I just finished it, and must say it's WELL worth trying the graphics our amazing and the story is just crazy, ya the controls could use some tweaking but other than that I loved the game.
That's a power of gamepass!
@@DawidDgk Ya can't go wrong.. they put some top tier games on that, I love it.
Gamepass is the way to go.
Even though I can appreciate games for their presentation or "uniqueness" when the gameplay is lacking, I really think this game needs more solid gameplay to justify actually playing it. - I mean, that sounds very contrary, but I mean that it would do the rest justice if the combat was just awesome to dig into and something that would make you keep coming back. - Now it's just kind of a spectacle to go through once, maybe twice, with little variety considering the presentation is fixed with its angles and story. - I feel like 'Sifu' is a good example of balancing presentation and gameplay, and a unique gameplay-concept at that. - But it seems that 'Trek to Yomi' has the sophistication of 'Prince of Persia', the very first game, without exaggerating, if not worse in ways. - The game is seriously in the distant past in terms of gameplay and they could've easily fleshed it out a bit more. I feel like they could still update it as it is, and they could actually do something very cool with the control-scheme, making it methodical but satisfying, as you're basically on a 2D plane.
And I hate to be down on it, because I LOVE the artistry of it and that games like this exist. I just wish it was more of a complete package. Had the gameplay been something more substantial or even addictive, I'd have put it way higher on my purchase-list. - Right now, I'll wait for a steep discount or for it to appear on Humble or something.
Games like this you want to be a bad ass fighter and the developers didn't deliver.
@@luisg2665 exactly I thought at the end of the game I will get powers or some type of demon weapon none of that. Disappointment 😤
@@luisg2665 they did deliver as its story based isnt about that! its story driven not your dulled down lack of vision idea that all samurai games need to be "bad ass" if you cant grasp the concept its about love, duty and fury etc you arent very smart plus its clearly a realistic style fighting game until hes in Yomi then its got the super natural element in it, think before you speak...
After watching Skill Up’s review I was interested in hoppin in. Then I saw some more reviews and got trepidatious with spending my time on a game that has lackluster combat (based on every review even the positive ones). After this vid tho I’ll be giving it a go. You and Ralph sold me!
Im very late, but i absolutely loved this game! I can see the flaws in combat, but i still enjoyed it. Maybe i was so deep in the cool world that it didnt really bother me :D So gorgeous, and so cool. I want more stuff like this!
Going to try it for sure
I think it’s pretty good. It’s very cinematic good presentation. Wht would make the combat better would be vibration for parrying and a lil vibration for sword strikes. The sound is amazing jus need the 💪🏾💪🏾 behind it🤷🏾♂️
I just finished this and I personally love this style of level design whatever it's called, I thought the graphics were top par and really gives you that movie feel, and lastly I REALLY enjoyed the 180 flip the story takes you on. That being said I totally agree with you, the controls could definitely use some tightening up, especially the paring system, other than a few minor things this is a great 20 dollar or free (Xbox) game I'd you like this style of game. 👍
Black and white game, 2D side scroller.. feels like we’re going back in time, definitely passing on this one.
Just love gameranx and Jake!
Beat the game tonight around 8 hours nice simple game with great graphical style I enjoyed it nice change of pace.
Great video grandpa Jake.
I need to check this game
Inside was amazing. They should do a part 2 but 8 hours longer.
Still waiting for Somerville!
Just finished chapter 2. Its flawed but it's fun.
This reminds me of the Prince of Persia of some 35 or so years ago, but so much better. Gonna pick it up, thanks Jake
So with the parry complaints… I get it. But I believe it’s a challenge, and forces you to focus on blocking and timing the parry block. But yes on the hardest difficulty it’s a bit OP.
Ive been checking it out on PC Game pass and im loving it!!
I kind of love the combat--its clunky but like u said it makes it harder and only makes u focus more
The background movements. It’s signature of Kurosawa’s movies.
this games definitely on my to play list
Hmm, can we get a game that’s like Trek to Yomi mixed with Sekiro style combat and character design? Maybe with some finishers that are brutal and well animated like Sekiro?
I totally agree with you this isn't the best game I've ever played.... But the aesthetics are amazing.... Have a total template for a great sequel....would definitely pay $50 for 30-hour game... Add more weapons clothing choices maybe a grappling hook a roll button etc... Love the channel keep up the great work 💥💥
I'm definitely gonna get this.
I have been really enjoying the game and on the harder difficulty once you learn how to fight you feel like a sword master
Everything aside from the combat/movement was stunning.
If the parry timing is fixed, it’ll be just perfect.
I loved Katana ZERO, relatively excited to play this
Had this pre-loaded last month on Game Pass. It looks so beautiful! And being a PC gamer, Ghost of Tsushima isn't coming to PC anytime soon so I needed to get something for my Samurai itch! This helps for the most part but the gameplay loop is disappointing for sure. The camerawork and environment though! Makes up for gameplay imo
P.S: Day one release on Game Pass if anyone's interested
Got is leaked to come to pc this year
@@ghostlegit stop talking nonsense, there is no legit leak other than they've removed the "only on PlayStation" tag on the store. it 100% isn't coming for another year or 2 they've literally said don't expect it anytime soon. they've even mentioned a sequel before the port...

Predownloaded on Xbox Game pass. Can't play it for a while, but I'm excited to play it someday soon.
Have you tried Unto the End and Song of Iron? Since you like this type of game you might like them.
Your honesty cheered me up. 😉 I'll still check it out in time. In spite of its flaws. 💪👍
I just have the sense from this and the Gameranx take that I will feel the same way about this game as Jake. I also love Inside and Limbo, but I see how if the fighting mechanics are off that it would be frustrating. Still gonna play it though!
Great gem, I wish Xbox would had a tip the publish feature that lets tip a small amount without us having to buy it.
I love the combat - it fits right in with the look the game is after based on the films of Kurosawa, and especially the film 'Sword of Doom'.
A game either gets me right away, or it doesn't based on combat, and this one works for me 100%.
It's not Ghosts of Tsushima (soooo tired of hearing that game's name referenced anytime a game remotely in the same universe is reviewed or discussed), and never pretended to be. It's going right after the source material and absolutely nails the look and feel of those films.
This more like an inyetactive playable samurai playable movie… from the beginning it never really felt like a game… the camera shots and angles are very satisfying. As well as the story
I loved Little Nightmares which actually got me to check out limbo and I sode which I loved as well. I went on to play Balck the fall and Little Nightmares 2 so this definitely looks good
I'm playing this game now an im having fun I love the look of it the controls at times def gets me pissed off but for me it's been a gd experience
That looks amazing! Really up my alley. The fighting I agree does look a bit stiff though, except the finishers. Very dramatic and stylish though! What a trip.
As more I play = more I like it
Soundtrack is disgustingly amazing🤘
I'm aiming to master this game💪
Thats a big bummer about the gameplay as this game caught my eye when it was first announced. I reckon ill still check it out at some point though because the aesthetic is *Chefs kiss*
Honestly for it is and what it has to offer I’m enjoying this game. It’s not for everyone and the combat is ok however it is stunning to look at and it’s priced well.
This one is high on my list, but my main game right now involves repairing some old jewelry, so it will have to wait
On Series X. Totally agree on the controls feeling just a bit off. I can't seem to get the timing just right on parries and stuff. Otherwise, the game looks gorgeous and runs really well so far. After one play session I am near halfway through. After Horizon Forbidden West (95 hours) and Elden Ring (120 hours) back to back, I really needed a short, tight, linear experience to blast through before tackling something more meaty again. This, even flawed, is perfect.
I really love the look of this one, black and white just has an extra quality to it that I can't put my finger on, I'm gonna call it 'soul' for now. I think this one is cheap enough to take a punt on pS4 as a short break from Elden Ring.
Just reminded me of how much i wanted Shadow complex 2
👍👍
If you have game pass you must try this game! The controls are difficult but if once you adjust you can kill a group of enemies Infront and behind without taking any damage. I'm loving it it's very good to look at and sounds are deep and atmospheric.
I personally am loving the combat. It only really took the intro and a little more for me to learn it, and it feels great honestly. I think it does much better and feels much better than some other games of the same caliber, but you can always say that something could be done better, and of course it would cool if it was crazy good. However, for what it is, personally, it feels good. I was honestly a little surprised at all the criticisms of the combat.
Reminds me of a modern age Karateka!
Brosif!!! One of my most favorite games of all time was the NES Kungfu videp game amd ever since than this kind of side scoller has been one of my favorite go too games!! i think the good outweighs the bad
I love this style of game aswell. Normally they're referred to as cinematic platformers but this game doesn't really have platforming so I'm not sure what to call it.
Do you think they will release a color mode or mod eventually
Gonna try it out on Gamepass then buy it on PS if i like it enough. Thanks for the early input. Hoping it gets enough support, the developer can add on or do more games.
I mean for 20 dollars the quality u get is amazing
Love the game aesthetically but I agree the combat just didn’t feel ardent enough to fully get the over all feel of the game! But I enjoyed it None the less
I'll buy it once it goes on sell. Right now tryna work on finishing Sifu before jumping into another game.
Yo Jake big respect from the UK 🇬🇧
Cheers dude
I agree. Worth checking out, but combat felt almost spongey.
Also, when are we getting another Way of the Samurai game? I adored those games, and wish the franchise would make a come back.
Oh man, bring it back!!
I wish this comes on Switch.
Absolutely loved it 😍
Played about an hour last night. I completely agree about the clunkiness of the combat. I also agree about how cool the rest of the game is.
Playing it on game pass right now and I’ve been enjoying it a lot, I have always been a big fan of games like limbo and insider, I like the combat but there are a few flaws with it. The game is beautiful too
I'll be playing it at some point because the Japanese acting kind of reminds me of Yakuza and the Akira Kurosawa style presentation interests me but i've heard that the combat isn't the best so I'll wait for a sale here :)
Yakuza? How lol
@@chaim5397 it’s Japanese acting just like the Yakuza series
I'm going to try it a bit on Game Pass. I try nearly everything on there at least a bit unless I already played in on PS and don't think it is worth another play.
Is this game digital only cuz I have not been able to find a physical release disc for it? Thanks
This game looks sick but the combat looks really bad. I'm probably still gonna try it out cause I love this genre. Hopefully I'll enjoy it.
Man I'm from India and to be honest it's really a struggle being a gamer here. Xbox series S is roughly 457USD. And boy it's 30 dollars above my salary. You and the gameranx team is the only way to have a feel of the game but i can see the gameplay but there is a small part that keeping a hope out that i can get to play this on gamepass someday, so I don't want to be spoiled. Thanks man
Just started playing this! I love this type of game. INSIDE and Little Nightmares 2 are 10/10 to me. I love the visuals and audio it's beautiful but I wish the combat was much better. Sekiro this is not
I loved it
i think this game is awesome i do think the combat takes getting use to but its not that bad it reminded me a little of original resident evil with controls where the clunky a.i and combat added something i think it would be way to easy if the controls were tight
Great wee fun game
I'll play the game if it comes out on switch it'll be fun to play this on a go or just in bed or somewhere else, you know.
I really enjoyed this game from start to finish. The visuals are fantastic! The combat is its weakest part but its still very enjoyable.
Based on the description, it sounds like the speed-run community would eat this up!
Skill up right now: did my boyfriend just stole my "don't skip title" ?
I’ll admit to not liking this game, when I first tried it. But I gave it another chance. This time I walked slowly through and checked out all the scenes. The game is beautiful.😍 It’s visually amazing, but the combat isn’t the best. My issue before was playing like Ghost of Tsushima, which for me meant spending all my stamina and getting my butt kicked. Again, slowed myself down and took it all in, which ended up being a much better experience.
I’m sure it’s much cheaper now, so I’d recommend checking it out.👍🏼
I was really disappointed in this game. It is really chasing the art style of Ghost of Tsushima and not hiding they hope to also chase that success too. Unfortunately this is in my opinion a perfect example of a "graphics don't make a game", game... It really baffles me the amount of hype this game garnered just off the visuals. I wasn't happy to beat this in one sitting, but at the same time, a longer campaign would have not been good here either. The combat is off as well, I swear there is an unnecessary souls like delay in button presses that are more akin to input lag than actually intentional, again here it feels like it can't find its place.
To me the game is a huge missed opportunity, but also feels like it accomplishes what it set out to do. I'm so conflicted, I don't like the game but I don't want to not like it either, it's weird.
At the the end of the day, it's a good "GamePass game", but nothing more.
Many people will not realize this, but this game seems to be like a remake of 'Prince of Persia'. Not "Sands of Time", not the cell-shaded one, no, 'Prince of Persia' from 1989. - It's the same kind of idea in terms of presentation and gameplay, albeit way more simplistic of course, though the gameplay might actually be MORE sophisticated (there's jumping, climbing, and there are traps and such things). - Heck, some of the scenes are even similar, to the point that it makes me wonder if the creators were inspired by it. - But it just makes this game seem dated by three decades in terms of gameplay, even the animations in "PoP" seem a little more "realistic" in a way, strangely enough. - But while I love the presentation, I agree that style alone doesn't make up for the lack of substance. Which is sad, cause the presentation deserves praise and attention. If only they had taken example of some other games, like even the recent 'Sifu', which just have solid and even unique gameplay to back up the presentation. - Another good example is a game like 'Downwell', which is actually an NES-style game, but has gameplay that is attractive in such a way that it will just make you come back for it, regardless of the simplistic presentation.
In any case, it seems like we've passed so much time in terms of gaming-history that we've somehow cycled back to old gameplay again. Of course there's the obvious intentional "retro" stuff, but while you'd think that it's good that games turn back to an "old school" style, like many would want, sometimes it can just become too simplistic and, again, outdated.
Bro why do people keep comparing yomi to ghost the only thing they share is the setting otherwise they are not similar games not even art style
@@manuelmoralez2257 It's the Kurosawa mode and feel here that they went heavy on to sell the game. And I'm sorry, but graphics don't sell a game, yet somehow they tricked consumers with the visual art style to make you feel like this is something it isn't. Reviews and everything aside, all the trailers I saw for this got me extremely hyped, despite not knowing what the story was (although quite good), nor much of how it played. It wasn't until my playthrough on GamePass that I realized while pretty to look at, this game has some very deep seeded gameplay flaws. The commenter above nails it, we've come full circle to gameplay that is 30 years or more old, and it has not aged well. I didn't hate this game, but I didn't love it either. However, do some research on this developer - the list of games they've made don't break a 75 on Metacritic reviewer scores, and they've been making games for year. They are stuck in a mediocre development rut and clearly banked on the art style to sell this game and it worked. It's just sad that most people are praising this for how it looks and glossing over the terrible gameplay. It's not worth $20, maybe $7.50 at best on a digital sale. I'm just glad I played it on GamePass and saved that money.
@@danbooke2001 idk where this tricking idea came from the whole game is marketed as a short movie like experience in the classic samurai movie style
The game play I get why people say it feels delayed but it’s meant to be like that for the feel of him swinging the sword 🗡 the combo looping you can do is super fun
Also this game looks amazing you gotta be playing on a potato or something to think otherwise
Also bro you don’t know what your talking about Devolver digital has given greats like inscription or Hotline Miami series
@@manuelmoralez2257 I'm just saying the art style is selling this game, the story is indeed good, but the gameplay is all over the place and not great. Playing it on a Series X on GamePass on a 4k display, but again I never said it looks horrible, it looks great, but peel back that layer and it is not a good game. But you like it, so more power to ya, different strokes for different folks and all that. Also Flying Wild Hog developed the game - they have a mediocre track record across they're years of releases. Devolver Digital just published it.
Bro if this could be on the old switch with it's blacks would be amazing!!!
i wonder have they patched the combat at all since release or is it still the same at this point?
Finished it twice and I'm about to start the ronin difficulty 💀
I should check out it you say?
Controls feel a little delayed, I think it is on purpose though to feel weighted, beautiful game though. Story is a very simplistic samari tale.
Yes. I just finished it think the game has amazing graphics and the story line is good but I'm 100 with you on the controls being just a little off, if this had SIFU style response the game would be even better, but I enjoyed the hell out of it and ya can't beat 20 bucks or free for a game like this
Is there a possibility where they can patch the combat in the future ???
I got the Platinum for this one, I loved the old film effect they went for but I found the combat very frustrating and in the hardest difficulty [ Ronin ] which they want you to do its insane. It took me two weeks to complete it but it felt like longer. I am glad I didn't buy it and got it on PS+
