In my experience, Noctua's Redux fans have a particularly hummy sound profile, especially when they have something (like case rails) obstructing them from the front. I hope that once you get your fan testing system up and running, you can also do frequency analysis for fan noise so that specificities like that reach people for whom that might matter.
Hopefully we can add it some day. That gets into territory where it'd require acoustic gear, so would be separate expense and training from the fan tester.

For whoever is thinking about getting this cooler, and is having a mid-rangy cpu, I highly recommend it. My system is with i5 8400 with stock cooler, and just installed the Noctua - entered a game, and my temps dropped from a constant 80C+ to 55-59. I love it, and it has a great reasonable price.
Looking at the price from PCCG shop in Australia, this sells for $125, while the Hyper 212 sells for about $65. So if this Noctua performs similarly, then it is a fail.
Shit, I had a 212 cooling my OC'd FX-8350 years ago and it ran much cooler than these newer CPU benchmarks at half the wattage. I don't know what is going on with newer CPU temps.
An original H212 so the team can suffer the mounting process! For real though, anyone who hasn't installed with the awful old cooler mounting hasn't lived the PC builder life

Dudes I bought this the other day. Im running Ryzen 5600X with standard cooler. While playing Warhammer 40K. the temps reached 90-93C. Had feeling it was way to hot. This went on for months. Then PC shut down while playing. Yep, it over heated. Well, I got this cooler $50 on Amazon. The results!! ......effen amazing. PC idles around 37-39C. Now while gaming highest reached was 59-61C ..... crazy....cray... This fan is real deal.
Echoing Noctua's approach. Got an NH-C14 ages ago. When Ryzen came out, I emailed them a proof of purchase and they sent the AM4 bracket for free immediately. I have cycled through 1600, 2600, 3600 and now on a 5600X. The NH-C14 is still trucking along nicely. As a direct consequence to how happy I am with the performance and their service overall, when asked to build for friends, I have exclusively selected Noctua for those who wanted to upgrade from the box cooler. All of them are happy with the choice.
Love seeing cooler reviews. Hope the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo v2 will be reviewed too as it’s in this price range and is also one of the ‘redux’/refreshed cooler models
I want to see both the original and v2 tested. The v2 claims to give 10% lower temperatures so we'll get to see Steve rant on how percentage temperatures don't work that way.
I have now my U12P for more than 10 years, it have seen many build, from big ATX case to now ITX NR200... it followed me from 2 intel builds to my current AM4 1700 ryzen... with every new mount free.... Just a big respect for Noctua... Their products worth every penies.
The installation guide was such a good idea and I hope that more of your reviews will include them. As an aside, I think a good idea for case reviews would be to show what the optimal fan setup is for them to get the best airflow. Sometimes this isn't clear from the manufacturers themselves.
Got a NH-D15 before there was a specific AM4 version. Got a mounting kit within 2 weeks after providing proof that I owned it. Used it on my 1700x and now on my 3950x, still very happy I got it.
I've been cooling my 2700X with dual Noctua NF-P12 1700s on a Vetroo V5 heatsink for years and I haven't seen over 75 since. NF-P12 and Arctic P12s are simply the quietest performance budget fans in my experience. Glad to see a review of these lower budget coolers!
I've got a U14S and noctua was great about sending the mounting hardware, I needed a 775 heatsink for working on some old PC and they sent it no questions asked.
I bought a Noctua U9F back in 2008 on the lga 775 socket. I upgraded to the lga 1156 socket and got a mounting kit for the fan. Recently, I upgraded to an AM4 platform, still got another mounting kit. The real funky bit is that I am still on the same NF9 fan. It still works and it is 15 years old.
One legit cooler that I haven't seen much reviews on is the DEEPCOOL Gammaxx 400S really good cpu cooler keeps my 5600X at around 50 at full load for $25
I know most people ignore everything besides pure performance, but over the years, I've come to appreciate build-quality, quality of the company's support-services and ease-of-use quite a lot. This may not be the best in class, but I've had very good experiences with Noctua's support and I find their mounting-system *SO* fricking much better than everything else I've had the displeasure of dealing with in the past. I guess one could call these "intangibles" and I am of the opinion that too few people pay any attention to them when making purchasing decisions.
I sure hope that the hyper 212 is one of the incoming reviews, cause that is an incredibly appealing part because of its cost Edit: Y'all who end up seein this comment please take a minute to report the bot replies, I know it probably doesn't do shit but I can hope
The Hyper 212 isn't nearly as appealing as it use to be. Several years ago, I got one for $15 after rebate from Newegg and another for $19.99 on sale at Newegg. Now its a big deal if they are $29.99 after rebate and most Hyper 212 versions sell for $35-$45. The Hyper 212X sells normally for $70.
Hyper 212 is overpriced for it performance compared to deepcool etc stuff, they haven’t update the cooler itself and the mounting is abysmal, almost all other cooler now has better mount and fan compare to it. It is kinda scummy to sell a almost 10 year old cooler without any update. Not to mention in Asia markets cooler master already using the newer model.
@@Mildly_Amused You can still see them for 20 after rebate occasionally. I got a 212X like 4 years ago for 20 after rebate. They don't quite get the same sales as they used to, but if you look and are patient, you can definitely get one for around the 20 mark from what I've seen of newegg sales.
I stuck with a Hyper 212 for my 5600X and it has worked well. Glad to see cheaper coolers like that getting added to the list to put this all into perspective.
@@105rogue On my 5600X 3060 TI build I use Clock Tuner for Ryzen 2.1 to dynamically adjust and minimize voltage needed to maintain equivalent stock performance. CTR automatically uses Cinebench R20 runs to determine the performance level. It's a genius piece of software I highly recommend it. My 5600X only got a CTR silver rating since it was an early run from 2020. I have 2 CPU fans and 6 case fans on a full mesh front case (all 120mm, NR600 case). During long gaming sessions the hot spot temp never goes over 73C with my central air conditioner set to 23.9C (75F). My room does heat up when gaming for hours, so that's part of the 73C hot spot temp. I live in Florida the room doesn't have great airflow out. It's winter now and outside temp is 84F. Those temps are for a clean heatsink, gotta keep on top of the dust. The dust sticks easy to isopropyl dipped q-tips when I clean it. I don't even need to remove the heatsink or unplug the fans thanks to adequate cable length.
I'm still using an NH-U14S from 2014 as, like you said, it's not like it's going to really deteriorate and it still makes sense for my workload; I only added a 2nd fan at some point and it just keeps chugging along. The fact that I can just email Noctua and they'll send me a bracket for my 7 year old cooler is absolutely insane and definitely makes me want to support the company as long as they have competitive products.
I do wonder how this compares to the Hyper 212. When AM4 came out cooler master did actually provide free mounting hardware to hyper 212 owners, although when I upgraded to ryzen there was no free stock so I ended up having to buy the new mounting hardware for £10 from somewhere. Still better than buying a whole new cooler for sure.
seeing these benches now after going through an old PC I haven't use 5+ years ago that had the OG U12S and seeing noctua is providing free bracket support just made my day.
Been running a Noctua NH-U14S for many years, and needed a kit when I changed CPUs. They sent one right out, free of charge. Mounting is the easiest of any cooler I've ever used, and the fans last forever. I'll never consider any other brand.
One of the great things I appreciate with Noctua is that they still provide me the bracket. I'm still using the discontinued NH D14. Still rocking an i7-4770k. But I was thinking of upgrading my CPU now to a 7800x3D, and I just emailed Noctua about the bracket, and they sent it.
Noctua has been offering free mounting hardware for new platforms for some time now. I've had an NH-L12 which I bought back in AM3 days, and they sent me free AM4 mounting kit in 2019 when I upgraded to Ryzen - I just emailed them screenshots of my orders for the cooler and the new motherboard.
there is no way Be quest should not get on the list eventually, they have those fairly popular dark rock and other less premium cooler categories. I think the "Dark Rock" series is the highest end for them.
It's about 10 bucks, or 20% more expensive in the US it seems. But I think if compatibility isn't a concern, it looks like great value given the very low noise levels and the still lower temps, yeah.
@@Spentalei sadly only in those regions. It's like, over 100 bucks here in Canada :( Then again I barely ever air cool so it's not really important for me. But would be nice to recommend for friends, etc
I have one cooling a 5900x. Changed the fans to normal thickness cryorig performance fans since I don't need all 4 ram slots and they match my other components and shes ripping. I'd recommend getting the balanced fans though, the performance ones are a little too loud for the extra .5 degree difference
The Fuma 2 is more expensive (albeit, not by much). And, is also significantly larger, which may cause clearance issues. Plus, you may need to pay extra to change out the fans if you want to really get the most out of that massive heatsink. So, you're not wrong, but...
I was a fairly early adopter of Noctua case fans and coolers, back around 2007-2008. They're quality is superb and have always done a great job cooling my systems. I have a box with older Noctua case fans that still work greats. Plus I have a couple of older coolers that are discontinued but are still quite usable. The last several I've bought have moved into new systems when I upgraded (currently is an NH-U12S which I bought gently used on eBay and saved at last $20). I like how they provide new mounting hardware if requested, or you can buy new mounting hardware off Amazon or Newegg for about $7.99 for either Intel or AMD CPUs. The mounting hardware has always been a selling point to me. One of the most straightforward, simple installations of any cooler I've used, you have to wonder why other vendors continue to make mounting an ordeal (I have noticed a few now using a similar mount). For me, Noctua coolers and fans worth paying extra!
I like this cooler. Well made and high quality workmanship? You could improve the cooling a bit by adding an additional fan for a push pull configuration? Great review and info as always Steve. Thanks
While adding a fan in push-pull configuration sounds reasonable (or at least could be studied) there is a caveat - IIRC Redux version lacks extra fan clips to mount a second fan. At that stage consumer is better off buying normal NH-U12S or better. Unless they have access to a metal workshop.
Every other single tower cooler I've had from Noctua has only small gains from adding a second fan (so they don't recommend it) but there is a small improvement. Noctua fans come with spare clips that you can use to attach it.
I go with Noctua over and over because of fit and finish. They look good and perform well longer than the cheaper products. The fact that they gave me a mounting kit for AM4 was a benefit of the kind that will bring me back again.
How do you set up the cooler to do the pressure mapping? Are you using a pressure sensitive film system with a "master die" with a known flatness and then digitizing it? What is the scale of the charts? It is interesting that you surmise that this is a mounting hardware issue and not a platen flatness issue? Could you alter the pressure pattern if you put more torque on the light side, or different shims underneath the mounting kit?
@@bigal2688 I did go back and watch that video. They did discuss mounting pressure a little and discussed mounting and un-mounting the cooler several times to troubleshoot inconsistent data. They did not review how they made the digital heat mapped charts to measure the force on the IHS.
Thanks a lot for the data, really useful. In future 65W loads, would you be able to add the wraith stealth as well ? Maybe some intel stock coolers as well ? Great content
@@VanillaWahlberg actually, you can use it with single fan inside. Also, full-size front fan can be mounted with tall RAM modules - just a bit higher.
@@Morpheus-pt3wq yes you can use a full size front fan however you either don't cover the entire heatsink by moving the fan up or lose access to the first slot of memory. Both aren't ideal.

@@arch1107 I think he said it still works great, If you had no other choice you might slowly be able to get it as close as possible to straight without damaging it. But the point is still that buying a new cooler and receiving it bent looks bad on the company.

I've never had any other Air Cooler than Noctua, so my experience *is* limited. But as a consumer for me personally the soundness of mind that I can use my NH-D15 for as long as I can is definitely valuable! I ended up giving my old rig away to family (for free) so I got the Chromax black version instead, but it's a good selling point.
I'm running the 212 right this moment. It's an awesome piece of hardware. I'm very satisfied, if this is better I don't know what more you could want in the budget segment.
The vetroo v5(other Chinese clones are coming). BTW, this isn't "budget", it's just less costly that the U12S. Hard to justify 60+ USD for a 65W TDP processor, even if you do get Noctua support, a better mounting system, and a pretty bulletproof fan.
I am actually curious on how all AMD stock coolers perform across their lineup, R3 to 9. You guys have something that covers it already or would you be willing to pick that up? This because there are several coolers out there that seem to be similair to the R3 and R5 coolers and would cover all if not most of those.
@@spykezspykez7001 the stock cooler is fine for 65w only in cold climates, in my case I live in a quite hot area and I had to buy a cheap aftermarket cooler A Cooler Master Hyper H412R because with the stock Wraith Stealth it was reaching 80 degrees while playing and I was concerned about it because I have a Ryzen 5 5600x and I want this processor to run in my system for the next 6 years at least.
@@victorhugofranciscon7899 You don't need to care about CPU temps if the voltage is stock, it will handle just fine for more than a decade even thermal throttling (if also stock value); what you need to worry most is the whole motherboard VRM quality and temps for a long life span.
Going with Noctua's excellent support history is worth the price premium for their products. They sent me updated brackets for old products instead me having to buy a new cooler. I also got a fan replaced after it started making bearing noise and it was an updated, quieter version of a previous fan with rubber absorption pads. And, of course, the mounting system is just really easy to utilize and work with. Noctua is great.

In my unique use case I bought the Mugen and slapped on 2 Noctua NF-F12 fans at 1500 I had laying around and it's great on my non OC'd 3600.
Btw: Noctua raised prices on their normal and chromax u12s when the redux was released to make it look like a batter deal. At least that’s what it seemed to be given the time frame.
Their costs have undoubtedly gone up like all manufacturers. Makes sense to time the increase that way. They might lose a mainline sale, but sell a Redux instead.
@@seitenryu6844 yeah makes sense but the timing makes it seem like they raised it to intentionally make the redux look like a better deal. The fact that as far as I’m aware they haven’t done this for other SKUs or even made an announcement about it makes it seem like bad intentions too.

He didn't want to change the case as the old one works just fine, in other words, has appropriate structural integrity and airflow... We tend to use our computers for at least 6 years before upgrading so we thought an air cooler would be a more reliable choice than an AIO water cooler.
Fuma 2 still looks better imo. And about that "upgrade path", we Indonesian know for a fact that Noctua or the official distributors won't send additional kits here because God knows how much cost to send few grams item to Indonesia.
This whole upgrade path seems a bad move from Noctua. All it took was to ship the cooler with mounting hardware for secondary fan and have the customer decide, if he needs the other stuff like LN adapter, Y cable, etc. What if i wanted to use 2 fans from another manufacturer, or just 2 other Noctua fans? Nope, still have to buy their "upgrade kit", that contains another fan. Way to create more waste, even tho claiming opposite.

After putting in a support ticket letting them know the item was a gift and I didn't have the receipt I had a reply within 24hours telling me that wasn't an issue they just needed a picture of the product along with model number and my shipping information. Once they had that info my item was shipped however Canada post lost it so when I contacted them to let them know of the situation they apologized for how long its taking for me to get my item and instantly sent out another set with express shipping. Sorry for the long message but I was just so impressed with how I was treated, the speed in which things were done and on top of that the legit quality of their products I had to share my story.

Looking at the price from PCCG shop in Australia, this sells for $125, while the Hyper 212 sells for about $65. So if this Noctua performs similarly, then it is a fail.
Yeah same here, plus it is most likely one of the most popular coolers for years.

I'm happy with my RGB version, but if I knew then what I know now I would have got the VeeTroo that was on Jays channel.
Shit, I had a 212 cooling my OC'd FX-8350 years ago and it ran much cooler than these newer CPU benchmarks at half the wattage. I don't know what is going on with newer CPU temps.
Absolutely love my noctua cooler and I’ll be using them again for any other builds in the future.

Well, I got this cooler $50 on Amazon. The results!! ......effen amazing. PC idles around 37-39C. Now while gaming highest reached was 59-61C ..... crazy....cray... This fan is real deal.
It always complete my day whenever I watch GN's critical reviews on pc components.
Great work Steve, Celestial Wizard.

I sure hope that the hyper 212 is one of the incoming reviews, cause that is an incredibly appealing part because of its cost
Edit: Y'all who end up seein this comment please take a minute to report the bot replies, I know it probably doesn't do shit but I can hope
Fuck me, the bots have gone insane.
I’m such a nerd that even though I’m not in the market for a cooling solution like this in any way, I still watched this whole 20 minutes.
I stuck with a Hyper 212 for my 5600X and it has worked well. Glad to see cheaper coolers like that getting added to the list to put this all into perspective.
How well does that cooler work with overclocking?
@@Mr.Morden Thank you sir!
I've had an NH-L12 which I bought back in AM3 days, and they sent me free AM4 mounting kit in 2019 when I upgraded to Ryzen - I just emailed them screenshots of my orders for the cooler and the new motherboard.
so that unit will work for your am5 build in the future because it seems amd will reuse the same holes for that socket, so i was a good investment
at first i skipped those kind of review now i appreciate it, thanks to all the gn team.
Would love to see BeQuiet on the List. (But i understand you cant test every Tower)
there is no way Be quest should not get on the list eventually, they have those fairly popular dark rock and other less premium cooler categories. I think the "Dark Rock" series is the highest end for them.
I'm so excited to see you guys get back into cooler testing. Keep up the great work!
Noctua support is amazing just don't expect fast shipping times.
Well, they are located in Austria, so there will be shipping delays due to the still annoying "human malware" presence.
I got my fan mounting clips from Noctua the next day after I sent them an email about it. ( I live in Finland)
Been using the Noctua NH-U12S for the last 10yrs and hopefully it'll stay cooling a system of mine for the next 10yrs
All of your testing seems to inadvertently show that the Scythe Fuma 2 is an excellent bang for the buck.
It's about 10 bucks, or 20% more expensive in the US it seems. But I think if compatibility isn't a concern, it looks like great value given the very low noise levels and the still lower temps, yeah.
@@Spentalei sadly only in those regions. It's like, over 100 bucks here in Canada :(

I have one cooling a 5900x. Changed the fans to normal thickness cryorig performance fans since I don't need all 4 ram slots and they match my other components and shes ripping. I'd recommend getting the balanced fans though, the performance ones are a little too loud for the extra .5 degree difference
@@tarfeef_4268 Yep. My DH15S chromax was significantly cheaper then a Fuma 2.
Thanks Steve. Back to you Steve.
Ever since I first tried that mounting system, it's been Noctua for me all the way.
Thanks a lot for the data, really useful.

And, of course, the mounting system is just really easy to utilize and work with.

And about that "upgrade path", we Indonesian know for a fact that Noctua or the official distributors won't send additional kits here because God knows how much cost to send few grams item to Indonesia.
This whole upgrade path seems a bad move from Noctua. I have this exact cooler in a Lian Li 011 Air Mini, without a GPU and I have an Intel i9 13900k running at Intel specified P1, P2 limits of 125 watts and 253 watts respectively. I'm getting miraculous cooling out of this incredible noctua redux. I am at 27° idle and running all core workloads (running Adobe Lightroom. Exporting 1000 photos using all cores ) at 78° c and get this... only 55% fan speed (which makes this barely audible)!!! What I think everybody should understand is when the I9 13900k is run at Intel specified limits, it can be cooled easily on air. Hope this is helpful when making a buying decision given your own personal circumstances and software and computer use. I just love this little thing. It's so efficient and quiet.
In few months or no time people will definitely start kicking themselves in regret for missing the opportunity to buy or invest in cryptocurrency.
Hello from Germany! I've been an investor in the crypto market for over 5 years
Stock are crashing, now is the the best time to invest in cryptocurrency
It's not about ignorance but due to the lack of trust and unprofessional broker in the trade
Well no doubt but they are still good and trustworthy professional broker out there waiting for an investor
You're right I invested with Mrs joanna Dorothy $7000 and she earned me $25000 in 7days of trading

this seems good choice for just in case if something goes wrong or temporarily replacement, if aio goes out, till u get replacement. ill be on the lookout for that one! thanks for the review, great stuff, something new to learn every day with GN!
Great review. I have installed this cooler for my new 12600K build (non-overclocked for regular use) and the additional LGA1700 hardware worked perfectly.
They do not include the free screwdriver, but that is sort of waste anyway.
One of the best Reddit comment I read about Noctua:
I found some used ones for $20-40 when I was looking for a spare cooler. The only part that breaks on them is the seal of freshness on the box.
Wow! Finally a Noctua cooler with an "Eye-compatible" fan color! :'D
