Yeah, I'd like to see that too. I've used them a few times with great results. Even my i7-5820k pulling 140 watts plus never got much above 80 degrees stress testing.
Hyper 212 Evo is cheap, but it almost always require blood sacrifice from me. The fins are so sharp that I always cut my hand when I mount them. If I'm looking for a cheap and quiet air cooler, I will look at Scythe ones.

I came from a cheap 240aio to an NH-L9a... I was doubting it would be more silent in my tiny system... I was blown away it was less silent and more pleasing to the ear by a huge margin, I simply cannot recommend any other fans/cooler than Noctua now
The folks at Noctua are really great. I'm happy to pay their premium because the products are excellent and the customer support is great. This can't be said for a majority of PC hardware manufacturers, especially those that make coolers. Further, an excellent air cooler that you can actually get mounting hardware for future sockets makes them last ages. I definitely plan on running my NH-D15S for the next 8-10 years, especially with PC hardware becoming more efficient with time.
Honestly the 65 I spent on my NH U9S Chromax Black was the best money I spent on my matx build. Good to see Noctua making it easier to get peace of mind.
Honestly the arctic freezer 34 (non dual) did not really worked well for me and my ryzen 3600. Mounted several times.. at a medium load he was really noisy or hot with around 70 celsius ... But only my experience
While I don’t have technical or scientific reasoning behind it, I believe the spaced out vibration pads are intended to increase flow/velocity. Two examples of seeing similar versions: •Air compressor blow guns: I detailed cars for 4 years and the larger sized compressor air blow guns had a tip with holes on the side to pull air from around the gun through the exit tube/barrel. When plugging the holes or removing the tip that contained the holes, the air velocity/pressure felt half of what it did with the holes. Turbocharged drag cars: it’s newer implementation, but lots of racers in import classes started to space the intake stack/tube for the turbo on 1500+Horsepower engines about 5mm away from the turbo charger inlet, and removing the silicone coupler that sealed the connection. Doing so, the cars picked up 2-3 PSI and 2 MPH on the trap speed, which may not sound significant but is pretty impressive for cars of those calibers. These two examples lead me to believe that the spacing is intentional
@@LinusTechTips it really depends on the wattage of the CPU you're using if your using a 65w chip the difference between 4 and 5 heat-pipes is going to be negligible its when you get to higher wattage chips that the real difference between the fans will begin to show but if your picking up a 95w+ chip i would look at larger cooler anyway, i am currently running a r5-3600x on a noctua l9x65 with a average deltaT over ambient of 55c at stock voltages
I watched this video and purchased this. Ryzen 5 5600x is what I am running, literally just built it and used stock cooler. Threw this in last night and was amazed at the difference, CPU underload 50C.. Def satisfied with this purchase. Great video btw. Thanks
Got a NH-D15 Chromax Black with my ryzen 7 3700x and have fan speed set to 35% which is whisper quiet. Under full load rendering something it’s never exceeding 75C even while making no extra noise. Love it
The thicker anti-vibration pads are used for the rear fan when using a Push/Pull configuration. It will optimize the acoustics by keeping the front of the rear fan clear of the heatsink, which could otherwise result in turbulence. The NH-U14S has these as well, and the manual reads: "The NH-U14S includes an extra set of fan clips and an extra set of thicker anti-vibration pads for installing a second NF-A15 fan in push/pull mode in order to further improve cooling performance. Please use the thicker anti-vibration pads on the rear NF-A-15 fan for improved acoustics if space allows." Seems the manual of the U12S Redux has no mention of this... cutting cost by saving Ink? :D
@@Saiimunn My guess is that if it DID happen, it would be something along the lines of "Linus went and done broke this expensive thing, and he asked if I could fix it. Seein' as this job will keep me from making my to-do list around the Empire Of Dirt shorter, I told him to box it up and send it over, and I'd take a look to see if I can get 'er choochin' again."
I've had the Fuma 2 with 7 total Scythe fans in my CPU case for the past year. Fans are all running near medium speed and it sound like a jetliner moving slowly through the air. Idle temps are around 30C at room temperature and never over 60C at load. 👍
Rubber pads are definitely an acoustic choice. When a fan spins, it generates vibrations, which would then press against the heatsink and potentially even project outwards increasing the volume of the cooler. The Pads act as a suspension between the cooler and the heatsink eliminating vibrations and likely shaving a few db. The big gap is probably so that the air doesn't whistly through the heatsink and enters at a lower pressure lessening the need for a conversion cable to low rpm which would in turn lower the pressure so very smart moves on Noctua. Every little thing they do has a really good reason
I'm not sure if it's an "issue" specific to Noctua fan designs, but installing the NH-D15's fans with the intake side mounted to the rear of the fin stacks causes very noticeable noisy turbulence. I would assume that's why they included the thick spacers for the rear fan.
@Linus the thicker vibration pads are because the fan moves a little bit while running and would otherwise hit the metal fins. You should switch the vibration pads to check
there is this cooler called the Gelid Solutions Phantom, which is around 30-35$ at my place. It's quite high on the cpu cooler tier list on the ltt forums. It idles around 26-36 with my ryzen 7 3700x, and 50-60 under heavy load with some high end thermal grizzly compound. It has 2 fans included, great value.
Noctua absolutely rocks in term of post sales support. This is the second adapter they ship me for free for my good old NH-U12P i bought in 2009 !!! The value for the money is incredible
Bought this for a now dated i5 2500k using Socket H2 LGA-1155. The description suggests it would be compatible which it sorta is, but not easily. I had to rig it in a weird way for it to work - but it worked. The frustration was worth it though, my CPU temps are fabulous! Under full load while gaming at Stock CPU speeds, temps never got above 50'c on any of the cores. Nice and quiet and I'm happy enough with it. When I eventually upgrade my CPU and Mobo this will definitely be used for that setup!
I bought a Noctua NH-U12P in 2009. It's the third mounting bracket I get for it (AM3 => 1159 => AM4). I changed the fans (because the original ones had 3-pin connectors that didn't work on the Intel motherboard) but it's still performing very well. I might get a NH-U12S for my next system though - it will depend on whether I can get a 4th mounting bracket for my U12P. Oh, I forgot to add : if you can provide the bill to Noctua, they'll ship a mounting bracket for free... At least for the first 10 years.
having had a dh15s for a few years now I've never thought those weren't that expensive for much better cooling overall. Still comparable cooling to some standard water cooling solutions and far less of a pain to install.
@@torade100 Yeah I dunno either, last CPU I bought was a 4790k, and it came with a cooler. I was planning for a big upgrade... but well world wide pandemic + super human levels of greed occurred.

the thicker anti-vibration mounts are for the fan in pull configs, so it's not bumping the fin stack if the standard thickness doesn't give enough clearance
This is one absolutely fantastic cooler! My CPU would idle at 95C, then I switched to this absolute beast and it sits at 50C under HEAVY load. Fantastic piece of kit
@@timemast3r Forgetting to use some kind of T.I.M.(Thermal Interface Material) between the CPU heat spreader and the bottom of the cooler is the most likely cause.
The reason they give you the extra thick spacers is for when you mount the fan with the intake side against the heat sink. If you don't space the fan it can cause some strange noises
No thanks, I’ll stick to my Scythe Fuma 2 that I bought for a similar price. Noctua is great if you want the best of the best, but it’s similar to buying a 3090 instead of a 3080, you see massive diminishing returns. Also they’re getting into a section of CPU cooling where a lot of companies already have tried and true results for oftentimes less money.
Fan clips for a 2nd fan are easy to get if you contact Noctua. I just purchased this cooler to replace a cooler master LC240E AIO with a failed pump. I had previously upgraded the AIO with two NF-A12x25 fans which are still working just fine. I want to use both fans on the cooler, but needed extra clips to do so. I contacted Noctua support and the next day received a response offering to send extra clips. All I had to do was send them proof of purchase for the cooler and my mailing address. Should receive the cooler today. I plan to compare the stock fan with the A12s to see what kind of temp or noise improvement I get.

I'm curious, if it wins Arctic Freezer 34 Duo. That's a beast for its price.
i have it and yes it's awesome
You really should compare Your Freezer 34 Duo with Fera 5 cooler. Fera 5 beats in perf/price comparison easly.
Honestly the arctic freezer 34 (non dual) did not really worked well for me and my ryzen 3600. Mounted several times.. at a medium load he was really noisy or hot with around 70 celsius ... But only my experience
I am cooling two E5-2687w v2 with 150W TDP each with AC 34 Duos. Works extremely well. These coolers are beasts for the money.
@@Hace1410 Try Fera 5 with single fan if you can buy it somewhere :D
the arctic freezer 34 esports duo is also a really good cooler for the price
+1
love the cooler but i had such a pain in the ass installing it the 3 times i did
@@deathica3346 same for me, almost all arctic products are not easy to install, but hey, its a good cooler
@Al Catraz i bet it does!

Noctua is also releasing white fans+ coolers this year im excited bout the looks of em
Knew it was Noctua from the video notification before I seen the thumbnail 😍

I super love when people put the "table of contents" in the video bar at the bottom, happy to see it on an LTT video
While I don’t have technical or scientific reasoning behind it, I believe the spaced out vibration pads are intended to increase flow/velocity.
Two examples of seeing similar versions:
•Air compressor blow guns: I detailed cars for 4 years and the larger sized compressor air blow guns had a tip with holes on the side to pull air from around the gun through the exit tube/barrel.
Great to see you reviewing air coolers again. I hope you will keep doing more of them!
Agreed. I'm not going the water cooled route until I'm forced to.
@@travis1240 Me neither. Why would I cool my CPU with 2-3 fans, a pump, and liquid (!) when I can do it more quietly with a single fan and heatsink?
You can also always buy non-redux fans later if the noise is bothering you
I wouldn't be so sure - the higher RPM of the Redux fan is likely necessary to improve the cooling performance given the reduction in heat pipes -CW
Me who sees the title of the video.
My Brain: That's a Noctua, my friend.
Even if you are not needing to be on budget, its is great to see a chrome style noctua cooler for those searching out there.
I watched this video and purchased this. Ryzen 5 5600x is what I am running, literally just built it and used stock cooler. Threw this in last night and was amazed at the difference, CPU underload 50C.. Def satisfied with this purchase. Great video btw. Thanks
I like how you sneaked the globe showing austria in the background /s
For this upside-down joke, I'll throw some Mozart-Kugeln at you :-D
Anyway Silentium PC Fera 5 Dual is the best (budget) cooler for CPU. But idk it is available to buy outside Poland/Europe.
Review more coolers! It helps fill the void that video cards left, also really enjoyed this video!!
The NH-U14S has these as well, and the manual reads:
"The NH-U14S includes an extra set of fan clips and an extra set of
thicker anti-vibration pads for installing a second NF-A15 fan in push/pull mode in order to further improve cooling performance. Please use the thicker anti-vibration pads on the rear NF-A-15 fan for improved acoustics if space allows."
Seems the manual of the U12S Redux has no mention of this... cutting cost by saving Ink? :D
Saying "200 Rip 'ems" immediately reminded me of AvE, Linus's more foul-mouthed machinist fellow BC resident. ;)
Same!
Same , maybe a colab coming up, it would be great but I don't know how AvE could do it without showing is face
Nice MK reference, but after seeing your performance while playing that game a few videos ago, I can't help but shiver
For 50 dollars you could also get the Scythe Mugen 5 Rev.5
Or $10 more get the Scythe Fuma 2
Great cooler, absolutely agree
I've had the Fuma 2 with 7 total Scythe fans in my CPU case for the past year. Fans are all running near medium speed and it sound like a jetliner moving slowly through the air. Idle temps are around 30C at room temperature and never over 60C at load. 👍
Absolutely love my Mugen, got the black one and swapped their fan for 2 Noctua NF-F12's, keeps my Ryzen 7 5800x nice and cool
And both are beaten by cheaper Fera 5 cooler from SilentiumPC :D
www.igorslab.de/en/silentiumpc-fera-5-im-test-2/3/
@@techgeek7173 could be due to the direct touch heatpipes, willing to bet if Mugen had em it'd be even better
I still using NH-U12P SE since 2010. From Phenom II to 2600 then now 5600x. still rocking quietly.
And then i get a Scythe Mugen 5 Rev.B SCMG-5100 cheaper then the Nocuta, at same or better performance.
6 heat pipes, and quiet
@Linus the thicker vibration pads are because the fan moves a little bit while running and would otherwise hit the metal fins. You should switch the vibration pads to check
there is this cooler called the Gelid Solutions Phantom, which is around 30-35$ at my place. It's quite high on the cpu cooler tier list on the ltt forums. It idles around 26-36 with my ryzen 7 3700x, and 50-60 under heavy load with some high end thermal grizzly compound. It has 2 fans included, great value.

Scythe Mugen 5 is a fantastic balance of cost , noise and performance.
Or the fuma 2. Its really quiet and cools my i5 10600k ocd to 4.8ghz pretty damn well.
Underrated cooler indeed. I probably won’t buy noctua again now scythe stuff is as good but cheaper and still has a nice mounting system
I have one and my Ryzen 2600 never hits 70c even Maxxed out on tests, games, or rendering.
Indeed. I would bet a dollar that the Mugen 5 is the better cooler as well. It's just a better cooler and it doesn't cost more for more features.
I love how the team was so "entertained" by linus' dad joke that they made it a chapter on youtube
I just looking up about cpu cooler and you just uploaded literally minutes.
it's still 50$ for basically a midrange cooler. I think there are better options depending on region and availability tbh
Yup. I can get a be quiet! Pure Rock 2 cheaper than that. Or even a full-size big boy-cooler from Thermalright. Noctua's budget is Apple-budget.
@@STOG01 Do what I did, get an NF-A12x25 PWM and retrofit it onto a snowman cooler. Same price ($50) but better performance AND quieter.
Noctua actually shipped the AM4 kit for my very old NH-D14 completely for free, no shipping costs at all.
I prefer to shell out a bit more for the full Noctua experience, rather than a subpar one.
Oh, now you tell me after I got a new CPU cooler this week.
If you wait long enough, you'll never buy anything. What'd you get?
@6:30 40% increase in energy outputted into the air as sound, not perceived volume. Perception is also somewhat logarithmic.
having had a dh15s for a few years now I've never thought those weren't that expensive for much better cooling overall. Still comparable cooling to some standard water cooling solutions and far less of a pain to install.
With that price tag they're stretching the definition of 'budget' somewhat; that's roughly double what a Hyper 212, or similar, will set you back.
might as well buy a dh15 or dh15s tbh, at least that's what I did a few years back and it's kept my OC'd 8700k in good shape the last several years.
Ahhh memories of the good ol' days where the stock cooler was more than sufficient unless you overclocked.
That's still the case with the Wraith Prism though.
I'd say that is still the case, as long as you keep it clean and with new thermal paste.
@@torade100 do the Ryzen 5000 series come with coolers still? I thought they didn't.
@@Mike__B good question, I'm sure the 5600 does but idk if AMD bundles them on higher tdp CPUs unlike intel, they did for 3000 series.
@@torade100 Yeah I dunno either, last CPU I bought was a 4790k, and it came with a cooler. I was planning for a big upgrade... but well world wide pandemic + super human levels of greed occurred.
I thought Noctua's coolers were affordable. The performance they gave for the price is incredible.
If you want a bang for the bucks cooler, te Vetroo V5 is it. I got one for $24.99 directly from Vetroo and it is keeping my new Ryzen 9 5900x between 35c and 74c while boosting to 5050mhz with EVGA RTX 3070 FTW3 Ultra... in a Lancool II Mesh case with only the 3 stock fans ... you should really try testing one... definitely the best budget air cooler out there.
the thicker anti-vibration mounts are for the fan in pull configs, so it's not bumping the fin stack if the standard thickness doesn't give enough clearance
"Blender render" is really fun to say out loud. Give it a try
I only notice my fans when I take a break for 5 min and it’s always right before I go back to playing

I’m sorry but how does one’s CPU IDLE at 95C???
@@timemast3r Forgetting to use some kind of T.I.M.(Thermal Interface Material) between the CPU heat spreader and the bottom of the cooler is the most likely cause.
The reason they give you the extra thick spacers is for when you mount the fan with the intake side against the heat sink. If you don't space the fan it can cause some strange noises
I wish there was a direct comparison to the 212 and aliexpress Snowman.
No thanks, I’ll stick to my Scythe Fuma 2 that I bought for a similar price. Noctua is great if you want the best of the best, but it’s similar to buying a 3090 instead of a 3080, you see massive diminishing returns. Also they’re getting into a section of CPU cooling where a lot of companies already have tried and true results for oftentimes less money.
i was about to buy that, but a guy sold a noctua nh d14 for 10 dollars. I thought it was a scam but it was not lol, perfect coldplate
I honestly think Noctua is one if not the most well meaning company I know
Fan clips for a 2nd fan are easy to get if you contact Noctua.
