Footage from my Canon R6 Mark II including a brief glimpse of the sun at 10:25: ua-cam.com/video/k1nzImmDny0/v-deo.html Hey everyone! I hope you enjoy this video on Southwest’s special solar eclipse flight from Austin to Indianapolis. There are a couple of things I want to mention. First of all, this will not be the only video I upload of this solar eclipse flight. I have footage from my Canon R6 Mark II that I working on making a separate video which I’m hoping to get out this week. Second, this video does not have a direct visual of the sun during totality, this is because the sun was nearly directly over our aircraft and would’ve been hard to get. The good news is that I managed to flip my R6 Mark II upside down and got a glimpse of the sun during totality and will be featured in that video. If you have any questions, be sure to let me know!
Man when i started seeing the reflection of the beacon on the winglet......all the feels!!!! Thank you so much for taking us along!!!! What an experience!!!! You know for all the division we see in this country it was good to have a moment where we all stopped and looked up to the Heavens together!!!! Watching a Lunar eclipse with Luna 7 almost 8 miles above the earths surface.....it gets no better.....! Yeah this is going in the favorites!!!
The Concorde holds the record in 1973 74 minutes in totality chasing a total solar eclipse in Africa!!! Flying Mach 2.0 and 1,350 mph while the moon travelled at 1,500 mph.
The speed at which the lunar shadow catches up to and over takes a full speed 737 Max 8 at cruise from behind is astounding. I hope you really enjoyed the flight and the scene, this is a really neat perspective.
@@Lunadog99 IMO Seeing the eclipse from the air totally beat seeing it from the ground. Such a unique perspective and experience! And I can say this because I too saw it from the air on Monday 😉
Glad you enjoyed it! Southwest really managed to put this together to be an amazing flight, and we got to experience an extra 2 minutes and 20 seconds of totality compared to on the ground!
A beautiful flight! And what a sight of the eclipse as seen from an aircraft! Just amazing and a beautiful experience. Thank you for taking us along on this special flight! I look forward to your next video of this experience of the eclipse seen from up in the air, above the clouds.
Amazing, to watch the darkness of the eclipse catch-up and overtake the plane and then have daylight reappear in real time at 35K feet (+/- 1000 ft) had to have been an incredible experience.
1:40:00 Indy Motor Speedway lots of people packed that place for the solar eclipse viewing party where ABC was live there during the total solar eclipse!!!
I am beyond envious of all the people that got to do this and experience this. For some reason these flights just never crossed my mind as the eclipse got closer. Awesome video...
I had the most spectacular view in a parking lot in NE Ohio. I got the whole experience. Even dogs barking. Great photos of the totality with my Samsung phone. Best part it did not cost me a dime!
I honestly was considering just taking the 3 hour drive from OKC to shoot some photos on my DSLR. 🤣 I’m glad I ended up doing this though as it’s truely a once and a lifetime experience, and I didn’t pay $1000+ like those Delta flights!
That looks like Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the 1:40:00 mark. They had something like 50,000 people at IMS for the eclipse party. I had thought about going to IMS for the eclipse. I was in New Castle, Indiana for the eclipse on Monday, at my aunt and uncle's house. New Castle is about 40 miles north of Indianapolis. So thankful we had clear skies on Monday! The rest of the week here in Kentucky has been rainy and cold.
Very nice. I noticed you enjoyed about two minutes more of Eclipse duration due to your speed and heading on the direction of the eclipse. Great Video!! 7 stars!!
Yup! We were flying over NE Texas/SW Arkansas at the time of totality which is 4 minutes and 20 seconds and we experienced about 6 minutes and 40 seconds! Thanks for watching!
You must've never traveled. Over 55 years in many planes to many destinations. People applaud for many different reasons, particularly Americans. You'd never be right picking just one.
To be honest, I’d have to agree with you. I saw the 2017 solar eclipse on the ground and watching the sun disappear behind the moon was something I’ll never forget. Being able to see the solar eclipse from the air and watching shadow of the moon catch up to us was still spectacular though.
@Lunadog Aviation - didmyou catch the entire total eclipse in the path of totality? It doesn't show in your video, only a partial eclipse whic requires wearing solar glasses. The sky should have turned totally black to nighttime when the sun is completetly covered by the moon. What kind of lens did you use on your camera?
Yes, I think it’s either the iPhone Camera or the angle that I shot this video at if you watch my other video (link here: ua-cam.com/video/k1nzImmDny0/v-deo.htmlsi=GDvm7uSvRvwsf1td ) which is shot on my more professional camera with an ultra wide lens the night affect is much more noticeable.
A total solar eclipse will occur between August 22 & 23, 2024. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total eclipse took place on April 8, 2024.
And that’s with me cutting out us waiting next to the runway. 🤣 I didn’t have a good way to determine what time it was so I was getting worried that we may not get enough altitude before totality.
How does it feel to fly, when the plane makes those sharp turns does it kinda feel like a rollercoaster similar to the incredible hulk at universal studios?

Skylight productions made a video about this
Arguably the best view yet of the eclipse! You can see the sun being eclipsed by the moon in the reflection of the engine! 😁✈️
Thank you! I’ve got an ultra-wide angle video pointing more forward coming soon as well!
WOW, had no idea. Looks again.

It really was surreal watching the shadow catch up to us. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you liked it!
This footage is amazing and some of the cleanest high resolution footage I have seen that someone has taken from a plane.
Thank you!
what a beutiful shot clean window. heck almost looks like a window doesnt even exist.
Nobody gonna talk about the guys during the takeoff💀 that was funny
ok but tbh it went from im fast af boi taxi to light speed takeoff immediately. I guess roll out was just straight off blastoff
@bossman5190 yeah right there basically
I woulda been rolling 😂 if I was onboard. Thought that was funny as hell and very random
Awesome video and footage! Seeing the eclipse from the air was an incredible experience! How could anyone now give this video a thumbs up!!
Couldn't agree more! Really glad I ended up doing this as instead of driving to Arkansas to view it.

Man did anyone notice the cool view of the eclipse on the airplane Wing! That was awesome!
That was so awesome! And the ground crew cracked me up as they pushed back. lol Thanks for sharing.

I enjoyed this flight so much! WN1721 was a dream of mine and the amount of effort Southwest put in was just too good!

Talk about a perfectly smooth flight!! The wing never flexed & certainly helped in the filming of this spectacular eclipse!

When you shoot with iPhone, you use specific camera settings?
Nothing too special for this, I shoot at 4K60 and lock focus on the wing but don’t lock auto exposure. Thanks!
What a view!
So Cool
This definitely took planning in more ways than one. Also, did you have the iPhone suction-cupped to the window?
I do not use a suction cup to hold my phone up to the window. I hold to up to the window.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for the support! It truly means a lot!
Stunning

What were the signs the ramp workers were holding? Thank you for the video.
The signs that they were holding up read “Reach for the stars” “We’re over the moon for you” “Total of our [SWA heart]” and “you are my sunshine”
"Repent now! For when the darkness comes, it shall be too late!"
Genius, idea to book flight for eclipse.

...I assume that was a regularly-scheduled flight (as distinct from a special eclipse-viewing charter flight). (?)
Yeah this flight was regularly scheduled, but just advertised later as a solar eclipse flight

Definitely way cooler from the ground. It just look like a normal sunset or sunrise from a plane.
